Birds of Prey May Possibly Feature A Non-Tattooed Harley Quinn

According to rumors, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn may lose her Suicide Squad tattoos in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). After debuting the character to memorable effect in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Robbie will make her long-anticipated return as Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn in the upcoming DCEU movie with the long – and arguably irritatingly confusing – title.

As that title suggests, Birds of Prey will see Quinn freeing herself from the influence of the Joker and moving on to new adventures. In addition to Quinn, the film will bring in popular DC female characters Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya, who join Quinn to save the youthful Cassandra Cain from the evil crime lord Black Mask, who is to be played by Ewan McGregor. The reported R-rated movie is being directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodgson.

As the few revealed plot details suggest, Birds of Prey will feature somewhat of a re-invented Harley Quinn, and now it seems that re-invention will possibly extend beyond the character’s relationships and goals. As reported by Revenge of the Fans, the new Harley Quinn may also sport a different look that sees her ditching the tattoos she wore after hooking up with the Joker in Suicide Squad. This report is only a rumor as of now, but changing gears on Quinn’s look would be in keeping with the mandate of new DC Films boss Walter Hamada, who has afforded his creatives a lot of freedom when it comes to re-imagining the DCEU’s many characters.

In fact, the look of Harley Quinn and the Joker in Suicide Squad was extreme, and quite a far cry from how those characters are normally depicted in the comics. Many were not fans of the gangsta look adopted by Jared Leto as the Joker (even director David Ayer admitted he may have gone too far with the character’s design), and others complained about Harley Quinn being made to look similarly like a lowlife. Those characters’ looks may have worked for Suicide Squad, a movie that was trying to be gritty and dark, but with Birds of Prey reportedly going the non-serious route, it arguably makes sense to clean up Harley Quinn’s appearance a bit and go back to something closer to the more playful and less inked-up comic book version of the character.

Of course, though many comic book fans disliked the Suicide Squad version of Harley Quinn, the character did catch on with general audiences and has since become one of the most popular Halloween costumes every year. It remains to be seen if Harley Quinn even gets a new look in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) let alone whether it goes over as well as the now-iconic Quinn incarnation from Suicide Squad. Assuming the new movie does makeover the character, as the new rumor suggests it may.
