The iconic Muppet character Elmo resolves the House Lannister feud in a new Game of Thrones and Sesame Street crossover video. Currently voiced by Ryan Dillon, Elmo debuted in 1972 as “Baby Monster.” On HBO’s Game of Thrones, Lena Headey portrays the villainous Cersei Lannister, a character who is known for her turbulent relationships with brothers Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage).
Various families rely on tradition and violence to survive in Game of Thrones, with the main players forming alliances to ensure long-term control. In the eighth and final season, which premiered April 14, the Game of Thrones characters are currently preparing for the Great War – a battle between the living and the dead. In the north at Winterfell, Tyrion Lannister has joined forces with House Stark’s Jon Snow, and serves as Hand of the Queen to the “Mother of Dragons,” Daenerys Targaryen. In the south at King’s Landing, Cersei Lannister plots against her human enemies, despite previously vowing allegiance to them during the Great War. Meanwhile, Jaime Lannister has arrived in Winterfell to lend assistance during the upcoming Battle of Winterfell, though he receives quite a surprise upon spotting a character from his past, Bran Stark.
On YouTube, Sesame Street released a video entitled “Sesame Street: Respect is Coming.” Early on, Tyrion speaks to his sister Cersei and declares “you can’t ignore me forever.” In response, Cersei refuses to make eye contact, while Tyrion states that he only wants “what’s best for Westeros.” After the usual awkward banter between the Lannister siblings, the one and only Elmo emerges from underneath the table, in full Game of Thrones regalia. Elmo then proceeds to deliver a moving monologue about respect and efficient communication, all the while confusing the siblings with a reference to Cookie Monster. Ultimately, Elmo convinces the siblings to “learn and listen,” and then becomes giddy upon Tyrion’s toast offering to a “new red friend.” The clip concludes with the message “Respect brings us together,” and Sesame Street also uses the hashtag #RespectIsComing. For Game of Thrones, the Elmo crossover aligns with the HBO series’ new comedic approach. In the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere, the episode includes more jokes than usual, including a cryptic encounter between series protagonist Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon named Drogon. To begin, the episode features Tyrion Lannister making a crude joke about the genitalia of Varys, a manipulative character who was castrated as a child. As the season progresses, however, the Game of Thrones’ comedy will surely take a backseat to pure action, as the upcoming Battle of Winterfell will reportedly feature the longest battle scene in the history of television and film.
