Idris Elba claims he will not be the next James Bond. Even though current 007 Daniel Craig still has one movie left before his tenure is up, people can’t help but speculate about who might succeed him. There is no shortage of candidates, but one name in particular that’s emerged as a fan-favorite is Idris Elba. Considering franchise producer Barbara Broccoli is open to casting a person of color in the role, it didn’t seem farfetched to some that Elba could don the tux next.
Rumors of Elba becoming Bond gained traction earlier this month, when it was alleged the producers were considering him. The actor had a bit of fun addressing it all in cryptic tweets, but due to several pieces of evidence, it always seemed like this was nothing more than a pipe dream. Now, Elba once again comments on the rumors – providing a blunt, yet definitive answer to the question.

While speaking with Good Morning Britain at an event for his directorial effort Yardie, Elba was briefly asked if he would be the next 007. As he walked away, the actor replied with a simple, “No.”
There’s always the possibility Elba is just keeping a secret, but odds are he’s telling the truth. The Bond franchise has more pressing matters than finding Craig’s replacement; director Danny Boyle recently departed Bond 25 (due in theaters November 2019) because of creative differences. Locking in a new helmsman for that film is the top priority, especially since they were in the midst of casting the female lead and villain. Production on Bond 25 was set to begin this December, and odds are EON would like to keep that schedule intact. It would also be somewhat silly to be on the hunt for the next Bond when the present one still isn’t done.
Elba definitely has the qualities one would look for in a James Bond, but it appears that ship has sailed. When the producers are casting the new 007, it’s unlikely he’s even considered. By the time Bond 25 opens in theaters, Elba will be 47 years old, only a few years younger than the outgoing Craig. Since the 26th movie in the long-running franchise probably won’t be ready until 2022 or 2023 at the earliest, the producers will be searching for a younger actor who could headline multiple installments. For instance, Craig was 38 when Casino Royale debuted. It’s unfortunate this is the case, but it all comes down to timing, and Elba (as great as he could have been), missed his shot at a license to kill.
