Netflix Announces Friends Will Remain Streaming Through 2019

Fans of the beloved sitcom Friends can sleep peacefully, now that Netflix has announced that the series is not leaving the streaming service anytime soon. Netflix has introduced new generations to a number of sitcoms and films, and among those series is the 90s sitcom Friends.

Over the weekend, fans of the comedy went into panic mode when various reports claimed that Friends was leaving the streaming service, as the show’s page included an expiration date indicating it would only be available until January 1. Thankfully, Netflix has cleared things up in a way that fans of the series will surely appreciate.

Via their official Twitter account, Netflix denied the rumors about Friends leaving their catalog next year, and they did it with a reference to the show. Remember when Ross dressed up as the “Holiday Armadillo” to introduce his son to Hanukkah? Well, it turns out that the Holiday Armadillo also grants wishes.

Friends potentially leaving Netflix was not as crazy as it might sound, given that Warner Bros. is preparing to launch its own streaming service in 2019, following in the steps of other studios working on their own subscription streaming services, most notably Disney with Disney Plus. Because of this, it was certainly possible that Warner would take the sitcom back from Netflix in order to add it to its own streaming service.

The addition of Friends to Netflix’s catalog not only gave a good dose of 90s nostalgia to a lot of subscribers, but also introduce new generations to the sitcom, giving it a new wave of popularity among younger viewers, who can binge watch all ten seasons whenever they want. Although the series came to an end 14 years ago, there are many themes and situations that remain relevant, while others have sparked some debates among younger viewers due to changing attitudes concerning certain types of humor.

With the recent wave of Netflix cancellations, most notably those from Marvel Television (Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and recently Daredevil), taking away another popular show like Friends – even if not new like the previous ones – would have been a very risky move. A big number of subscribers are not pleased with the cancellation of those series as well as the removal of other series and films from the catalog, but for now they can rest assured that Friends will be there for them one more year.
