We all love a good sitcom, and there’s tons of debate regarding who the best supporting characters are. This list is here to shock you to your core, and hopefully help you discover that a lot of your favorite secondary characters are actually married to the main cast (and that’s probably how they got the role in the first place).
From How I Met Your Mother to Friends and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, these iconic secondary characters aren’t just regular actors. Some of them are huge stars in their own right (Brad Pitt’s unforgettable appearance as Will in Friends), while there are others you may not have noticed.
10 Sandy Rivers, How I Met Your Mother (Married to Alyson Hannigan)
This narcissistic anchorman, played by Alex Denisof, appears in 10 episodes of the series. You’ll all remember him as Robin’s creepy and annoying colleague at Metro News One. Sandy’s character is wildly inappropriate, and he tries to ask Robin out too many times for us to keep track of.
Ironically, he’s actually the real-life husband of Alyson Hannigan, who plays Robin’s best friend, Lily Aldrin. The couple has been married since 2003 and have two children (yes, her she was pregnant during the series).
9 Chet, The Good Place (Married to Kristen Bell)
We’re hoping that everyone knows who the brilliant Dax Shepard is, and he’s even more incredible for being married to Kristen Bell. The lead in the show, Bell, plays Eleanor Shellstrop.
Although Chet only appears for a short time as a torturer in the Bad Place, his cameo is both hilarious and absolutely brilliant. We see you, Dax, and we wish you had more screen-time. This couple is honestly goals, and we’re not sure who is more hilarious.
8 Vivian, Two and a Half Men (Married to Ashton Kutcher)
Ashton Kutcher took over Charlie Sheen as the leading man in this popular series. Of course, he couldn’t help but get his beautiful wife, Mila Kunis, to guest star as Vivian.
Vivian appears quite literally out of nowhere, and Walden becomes infatuated (who wouldn’t?), but she leaves him in the dust to satisfy her wanderlust. These two lovebirds also met on the set of That ’70s Show, but they definitely weren’t married then. Mila Kunis is an esteemed Hollywood actress herself, and this power couple definitely takes the industry by storm.
7 Scooter, How I Met Your Mother (Married to Neil Patrick Harris)
Played by David Burtka, Scooter is Lily’s old high-school boyfriend. He appears in 7 episodes, and we’ll remember him as being Lily’s only previous boyfriend who only made it to the “lobby”. He becomes pretty obsessed with Lily throughout the series, which, again, is only ironic, as he is married to the wonderful Neil Patrick Harris (aka Barney Stinson).
David Burtka is an actor and a professional chef (must be nice, Neil), and is best known for acting in theater. The couple have 2 wonderful children and tied the knot in 2014.
6 Will Colbert, Friends (Married to Jennifer Aniston)
Brad Pitt played the brilliant role of Will, who actually hates Rachel Green with every fibre of his being. An old high school buddy of Ross’s, the two had created a I-Hate-Rachel-Green-Club.
Ironically, this dreamboat was actually married to the wicked woman herself while this episode was filmed. While these two aren’t married any more, it definitely made for an incredible episode back in the day.
5 Melvin Stermley, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Married to Melissa Fumero)
David Fumero plays the incredibly funny and good-looking puzzle creator/model that Amy and Jake investigate a case for. Melvin was the victim of a threatening letter and is the target of a serial arsonist, and Jake and Amy butt heads over the best way to solve the case.
Jake spends the entire episode riddled with jealousy over Amy’s hero, which, we now know, is incredibly ironic. We think you already lost, Jake, that man is already married to the beautiful Amy (aka Melissa Fumero).
4 Tammy, Parks and Recreation (Married to Nick Offerman)
Megan Mullally, who is married to Nick Offerman (who portrays Ron Swanson), plays his evil ex-wife throughout the series. She actually ends up being in 9 episodes, and the two characters struggle with their lasting attraction for each other (which we’re sure they have in real-life).
Megan Mullally is also a recurring character, playing Karen Walker, in Will & Grace. The couple has been married since 2003!
3 Carol Stills, The Office (Married to Steve Carell)
Carol Stills appears in 7 episodes of this hit show, a real estate agent and (ironically) an ex-girlfriend of Michael Scott, her husband’s character. Nancy and Steve Carell have been married since 1995 and have two children, so it’s safe to say they’re doing pretty well.
Nancy is an actress, comedian, and writer, best known for her work on Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show. Nancy has also actually appeared in a few of Steve’s projects, and we’re loving their love story.
2 The Waitress, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Married to Charlie Day)
Appearing in a whopping 31 episodes (an apparently still nameless), Mary Elizabeth Ellis portrays this hilarious recurring character on the show.
Married to Charlie Day, who plays Charlie Kelly, the two were newlyweds during the show’s airing and are still kicking it with one gorgeous child. You can find Mary Ellis as a secondary character in a few other popular sitcoms, including Perfect Couples, New Girl, and Santa Clarita Diet.
1 Gary Blauman, How I Met Your Mother (Married to Cobie Smulders)
How I Met Your Mother really utilized the cast’s spouses. Gary, played by Taran Killam, was Barney and Marshall’s coworker. He’s kind of a less-than-valuable character, but he appears in 6 episodes.
Later on, we see him become friends with Bilson, who both work for Goliath National Bank. Gary is also the man that sleeps with Barney’s brother, James, which nearly implodes his marriage. This sporadic character has nothing to do with Robin, but is in fact married to her in real-life.
