Star Wars Pays Tribute To Leia In New Animated Short

Star Wars pays tribute to Leia (Carrie Fisher) in a new animation that charts her journey from princess to general. Following her very first appearance in the original Star Wars, Leia became an iconic character thanks to her wit and strength. While her story was initially kept to George Lucas’ original trilogy, fans were thrilled to hear Leia would be returning for Disney’s rebooted trilogy, which began in 2015 with The Force Awakens. Fans got to see how Leia had changed in the years since Return of the Jedi, and she played a part in each film in the new trilogy.

Unfortunately, however, Leia’s role in last year’s The Rise of Skywalker was cut short following Fisher’s death in 2016. Reportedly, The Rise of Skywalker was supposed to be the most Leia-centric of the entire reboot trilogy, but director JJ Abrams was forced to work with previously unused footage to craft Leia’s ending. In The Rise of Skywalker, Leia sacrifices herself by using all her energy to reach out to her wayward son Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) through the Force. She’s successful in helping him turn back to the light, but in doing so, she dies. Rey (Daisy Ridley) later sees her as a Force ghost, showing Leia has become one with the Force.

As part of the animation series “Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures,” Leia’s journey through the films has been brought to life in a beautiful animation. The short video, posted by Star Wars Kids, highlights some of Leia’s most memorable moments from the reboot trilogy while still flashing back to the original films. It also includes actual dialogue from the movies. Check it out below:

Between the dialogue from the film and John Williams’ iconic score, it’s hard not to get a little emotional while watching Leia’s journey unfold. The animation doesn’t delve much into The Rise of Skywalker (likely for good reason, considering what happens to her in it), but it does show her watching Rey as she trains. Leia’s role as a mentor to Rey is one of the reasons Rey opts to take the Skywalker name at the end of The Rise of Skywalker, a decision that was met with mixed reactions from fans.

While Leia’s story in the films has been brought to an end, the character will surely live forever in the hearts of fans. It’s hard to deny the impact Leia has had on pop culture, and while it’s unfortunate that her story in The Rise of Skywalker had to be cut short, at least she was given a proper ending on screen. For however long Star Wars continues, Leia will surely be missed.
