The Big Bang Theory: The 10 Best Sheldon Cooper Quotes

For nearly 12 seasons now, Jim Parsons has starred on CBS’s beloved sitcom The Big Bang Theory as Dr. Sheldon Cooper, a genius and incredibly eccentric theoretical physicist. Parsons’ work as Sheldon has earned him countless awards and even more nominations – and when you look at some of the work he’s turned in over the years, especially in the early seasons when Sheldon was at his quirkiest, it’s not hard to see why.

RELATED: The 10 Best Guest Stars On The Big Bang Theory

While it could be easy to make the case that The Big Bang Theory was, at least at one point, intended to be Leonard’s show, it’s pretty plain to see that the series became Sheldon’s show a long time ago – which was definitely a marked change for the better. Sheldon’s peculiar and specific routines, obsessive interests in all things science and science fiction, and often oblivious social behaviors have all been perfectly woven together to create a character who became an instant pop culture icon.

And all of that before we even take into consideration hos many hilarious quotes Sheldon has had over the years. Below, we look back at ten of the best of them.

10 “Penny, while I subscribe to the Many Worlds Theory…”

“which posits the existence of an infinite number of Sheldons in an infinite number of universes – I assure you that in none of them am I dancing.”

An unmistakable highlight of the series’ earlier seasons was the back and forth rapport between Sheldon and Kaley Cuoco’s Penny, Sheldon and Leonard’s adorably dimwitted neighbor and Leonard’s on and off love interest. One hilarious season three episode opens with Sheldon waking up in the morning to find a barely dressed Penny making pancakes and dancing around the kitchen to Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like A Woman.”

Penny, clearly relishing in Sheldon’s confuse, invites him to dance along with her – which leads us to the hilarious moment quoted above. Sheldon may not think of himself as much of a social animal, and he very well may be right about that. But that doesn’t make any of his social interactions any less amusing for us viewers.

9 “I think that you have as much of a chance of having a sexual relationship with Penny…”

“as the Hubble Telescope does of discovering that at the center of every black hole there is a little man with a flashlight searching for a circuit breaker.”

From the very beginning of the series, Sheldon was a big naysayer of the prospect of a relationship between Cuoco’s Penny and Johnny Galecki’s Leonard. Of course, as this is a situation comedy, it was also immediately clear from the moment these characters met that Leonard and Penny would become the series’ central will they, won’t they relationship.

But that didn’t stop Sheldon from offering his honest – and, usually, brutally honest – thoughts about the possibility of their eventual coupling. And most of the time, the totally scathing remarks were paired with wonderfully nerdy scientific jokes, such as this amazing one about the Hubble Telescope and black holes.

8 “Oh, on the contrary. I found the Grinch to be a relatable, engaging character, and I was really with him…”

“right up to the point that he succumbed to social convention and returned the presents and saved Christmas. What a buzzkill that was.”

Sheldon hasn’t always been the merriest fellow when it comes to having holiday spirit. An early episode of the series’ second season finds Sheldon decrying the social protocol of buying Christmas presents for other people, and discussing the history of the celebration known as Saturnalia. But in the series’ third season’s holiday-themed episode, viewers really get a better look at how the genius’s mind really works.

And boy, is it wonderfully weird. Sheldon, ever the antisocial one who prefers to be by himself and eschew social traditions, reveals that he considered The Grinch to be a truly relatable, even inspirational character – right up until that darn moment The Grinch’s heart grew three sizes. At least from a scientific standpoint, he may be onto something.

7 “Hard as this may be to believe, it’s possible that I’m not boyfriend material.”

One of the main storylines that The Big Bang Theory has chronicled – for better or worse – has been Sheldon’s gradual transformation from a romantically disinclined individual to a boyfriend, fiance, and eventual husband to Mayim Bialik’s Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler. Early in their relationship, Sheldon struggled greatly with knowing how to appear invested in Amy’s life, and especially her line of work, which he has always felt is inferior to his own.

RELATED: Big Bang Theory: 25 Things That Make No Sense About Sheldon And Amy’s Relationship

To be fair, his thoughts on biology haven’t changed much over the years, but he has gotten a little bit better about biting his tongue and keeping his disinterest and snide comments to himself. But in season five’s twelfth episode, he and Amy got into an argument about his rude behavior, leading to him making the above remark to Leonard about his shocking lack of boyfriend appeal.

6 “Scissors cuts paper. Paper covers rock. Rock crushes lizard.”

“Lizard poisons Spock. Spock smashes scissors. Scissors decapitates lizard. Lizard eats paper. Paper disproves Spock. Spock vaporizes rock. And, as it always has, rock crushes scissors.”

Sometimes, there are certain quotes from characters that give way to entire pop culture trends. The second season episode “The Lizard-Spock Expansion” gives Sheldon one of these such moments. The episode introduces viewers everywhere to the bizarre game known as Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock – the gang’s apparent method of choice when they have decisions to make that none of them really want to make.

Clearly an expansion of the traditional Rock, Paper, Scissors, the game perfectly incorporates aspects of science fiction that appeal to our primary gang of friends – and no character could ever explain things as hilariously, or as succinctly, as Sheldon does.

5 “I’m exceedingly smart. I graduated college at 14.”

“While my brother was getting an STD, I was getting a Ph.D. Penicillin can’t take this away.”

Long before Young Sheldon existed to introduce viewers to the hilarious and heartwarming dynamics of the Cooper family, including that of Sheldon and his older brother Georgie, The Big Bang Theory still managed to occasionally drop hints along the way as to the nature of Sheldon’s family. One of such gems came in the eighth season, when Sheldon was applying to be chosen to travel to Mars.

During his video application, Sheldon immediately got way too personal about himself, lauding his own personal successes as he always does – while also shedding light on some incredibly TMI details about his brother’s own adolescence.

4 “Robert Oppenheimer was lonely.”

“This is Enrico Fermi, Richard Feynman, Edward Teller, Otto Frisch, and Zazzles. I was going to name him Hermann von Helmholtz, but he’s so zazzy.”

Sheldon Cooper probably doesn’t strike most people as a cat person. It also doesn’t help matters that one episode has him claiming he’s allergic to cats, but hey, it’s a sitcom – we can’t expect perfect continuity at all times. Early in season four, however, viewers get to see what it would be like if Sheldon Cooper became the male scientist equivalent of a cat lady – and the results, as to be expected, are hilarious.

RELATED: Big Bang Theory Season 7 May Have Teased Sheldon’s Ending

After temporarily breaking things off with Amy, Sheldon decides he needs to get not one, not two, but six cats – almost all of whom are named after scientists who took part in the Manhattan Project. Except, of course, for the lovably zazzy little Zazzles. We’re not sure how Sheldon decided on any of these names, but boy, are we glad he did.

3 “I’m not crazy. My mother had me tested.”

It’d be impossible to count the number of times that characters in the series refer to Sheldon as crazy, or some variation thereof. It’s not his fault, really, considering he’s not fully aware of the social stipulations of basically every possible daily situation. And it also doesn’t help that there is, famously, a fine line between what society thinks of as genius and insanity.

But if you try to insist, seriously, that Sheldon is crazy, he’ll be quick to correct you on that one. As he once famously stated, “I’m not crazy. My mother had me tested.” And knowing Mary Cooper as we do now, both through Laurie Metcalf’s performance on The Big Bang Theory and through her daughter, Zoe Perry’s, work on Young Sheldon, we don’t doubt that this actually happened.

2 “Well, that’s no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad.”

“For example, I cry because others are stupid and it makes me sad.”

Sheldon has never been anything other than unflinchingly confident in his own intellect, especially when compared to – well, almost anyone else. But poor Penny has often born the brunt of his judgment, especially when the two of them are working together, but on no occasion more than when he attempts to teach her the history of physics.

When Penny starts crying because she feels stupid since Sheldon’s lessons aren’t sticking with her, Sheldon is absolutely incredulous. He doesn’t understand why being stupid would make her cry – but, on the other hand, his own reasoning of crying because other people are stupid is perfectly valid. Sometimes, there’s just no point in arguing with Sheldon’s way of thinking.

1 “Bazinga!”

If any of Sheldon’s quotes over the years could come closer to being thought of as a catchphrase, it would undoubtedly be this one word zinger he utters whenever he thinks he’s been hilarious. Usually, he hasn’t been – and in fact, he’s usually been rather annoying, arrogant, or both. But his self-satisfaction, paired with the undeniably goofy little exclamation, makes “Bazinga!” such a real winner of a catchphrase.

Young Sheldon even doubles down on the significance of the utterance, revealing that it was a word Sheldon learned from a series of practical jokes, and therefore, remains one of the few behavioral things (that we know of so far) that he has carried over from his formative years into his adulthood.

Watch: Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga Perform A Star Is Born Song Live

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga have given fans a treat by performing their Oscar-nominated track “Shallow” from A Star Is Born together live on stage. Having already won a Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award for the song, this was the first time since the film was released that Cooper and Gaga have performed the popular song live together.

Lady Gaga is currently in the early days of residency at Park MGM Las Vegas, which showcases two different shows: Enigma and Jazz and Piano. The residency will run until next November, and Gaga includes A Star is Born’s “Shallow” on the setlist. The song was written by both Cooper and Gaga, and it was recently nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. Both Cooper and Gaga were also nominated for Oscars for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Leading Role, respectively, with the film being nominated for a total of eight Oscars.

Related: Little Mermaid Rumor: Lady Gaga Possibly Up for Ursula Role

Surprising the concert’s audience, Cooper joined Gaga on stage to sing with her during her performance of “Shallow.” The entire performance was captured on video, which can be seen below, courtesy of Deadline. Gaga initially teased the unsuspecting crowd prior to Cooper’s arrival by saying “So a really good friend of mine… I don’t know if you know him, but his name is Bradley. He made that movie, umm, A Star Is Born.”

Just before the performance begins, Cooper, while preparing to put in his monitors, can be heard saying, “Jackson never used these.” The reference is directed at his character in A Star Is Born, Jackson Maine, who remained stubborn regarding his ongoing hearing loss and outright refused the use of monitors, despite the insistence of his brother Bobby (Sam Elliot, who was also nominated for his performance). The performance could be considered as something of a rehearsal for Cooper and Gaga, who are expected to perform “Shallow” together at this year’s Oscar ceremony. The film is seen as a big Oscar favorite, though many are counting on heavy competition from The Favourite and Roma, which lead the pack with 10 nominations each.

There’s no doubt that “Shallow” is a powerful song and fits in perfectly with the overall themes of A Star Is Born. Given that this was the first time Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper have performed together since the film’s release, the duet remain strong, though Gaga’s is clearly the voice that brings the performance to its most stirring heights. For his part, Cooper’s voice seemed to be slightly lacking the charming gruffness that audiences were used to from Jackson Maine in A Star Is Born, but come Oscar night, a live performance of “Shallow” should be nothing short of spectacular.

Black Panther 2 Moving Forward With Ryan Coogler Set to Write & Direct

Ryan Coogler is confirmed to return to write and direct Black Panther 2. Marvel Studios found massive success earlier this year with the launch of Black Panther. It was the first MCU movie to star a person of color in Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa. The movie featured almost an entirely black cast and wound up receiving rave reviews, in addition to earning over $1 billion at the box office.

Due to the success, there’s been heavy speculation about the status of a sequel. There’s been no official word from Marvel Studios about where the movie stood, let alone the status of the film’s cast. However, the biggest focus for many was whether or not writer-director Ryan Coogler would return.

Related: Michael B. Jordan Open to Black Panther 2 Return

THR has now confirmed that Ryan Coogler is indeed returning to Wakanda. They’ve confirmed that he’ll write and direct Black Panther 2 for Marvel Studios. Production is currently expected to get started in late 2019 or early 2020.

Coogler returning to direct Black Panther 2 has been expected for some time, but now it is nice to finally have the confirmation that he’s returning. He’d signed up for other projects since Black Panther hit theaters, so he took his time deciding to return to Wakanda. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said he wanted Coogler to make the sequel. They’re doing just that with this announcement, as they may have wanted to get the sequel moving even quicker because of just how big of a hit the original was.

Now that Coogler is locked in for Black Panther 2, the hope to shoot the sequel in late 2019 or early 2020 will depend on a few things. The first will be Coogler finishing the script and getting it into the proper place to actually start production. Feige previously said they have a “pretty solid direction” for the sequel’s story, so this may just be a matter of Coogler putting pen to paper. The other major step that will need to be completed is actually aligning the franchise’s multiple stars’ busy schedules. Boseman is continuing to take on new projects, while breakout cast members like Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira have also continued to book future movies.

Although Marvel has yet to confirm Coogler’s return or even that they’re making Black Panther 2, the longterm planning on their part clued many in on this timetable for the sequel. They previously dated untitled Marvel movies into 2022, and the February 2021 release date was quickly pointed to by many as Black Panther 2‘s likely landing spot. This reported production schedule should only reaffirm that belief. Of course, Marvel doesn’t plan on announcing any of their future projects officially until after Avengers 4 hits theaters, so it may still be several months before Coogler’s involvement and Black Panther 2‘s release date become officially official. But for now, his involvement has been confirmed by several sources and is a great step forward for the sequel.

Godzilla Vs Kong Movie Casts Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry

Brian Tyree Henry is set to join the cast of Godzilla Vs Kong. Legendary is getting into the cinematic universe game with the MonsterVerse and are building towards their big crossover in style. Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla launched the universe in 2014 and was followed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ ’70s-set Kong: Skull Island. They’ve now established the two monsters, but are giving Godzilla a sequel next year to further set up their upcoming confrontation. That will happen in the appropriately titled Godzilla Vs Kong, directed by Adam Wingard.

The crossover movie has been getting itself into position to start filming, which was previously reported to start at the beginning of this month. There’s so far been no indication that this has actually happened and it would be difficult to do so without the entire cast set. The biggest star so far is Millie Bobby Brown reprising her role from Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Variety now reports that Emmy-nominated Atlanta actor Brian Tyree Henry is joining the cast of Godzilla Vs Kong. There’s no details about who he will be playing, only that it is described as a “significant” role. This could make him either a hero or a villain in the larger story, both of which Henry’s shown the ability to succeed in.

Henry is best known and recognized for his work in FX’s Donald Glover comedy/drama, and has only continued to line up future projects. He was already seen this year in smaller roles in Hotel Artemis and White Boy Rick, but has three more movies coming out by the end of the year. Supporting roles in Widow and If Beale Street Could Talk have already put him on the receiving end of great critical praise, while he’s also providing the voice of Miles Morales’ dad in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He still has a third season of Atlanta, Amy Adams’ drama The Woman in the Window, Melissa McCarthy’s comedy Superintelligence, and the Child’s Play reboot in his future as well. Now that we can add Godzilla Vs Kong to his upcoming filmography, Henry will continue be someone audiences become very familiar with.

The cast of Godzilla Vs Kong extends beyond just Henry and Brown, though. The movie also brought Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Deadpool 2 star Julian Dennison on board earlier this year. There were even rumors that Black Panther‘s Danai Gurira was being eyed for a major role in the movie, but that has yet to be confirmed. Even if that doesn’t pan out, the movie is off to a great start with its casting. None of the stars may be certifiable box office draws just yet, but that’s why a battle between Godzilla and King Kong is at the center of the film. And, who knows, by the time Godzilla Vs Kong arrives in theaters, the constant exposure Henry is getting could make him a major selling point.

John Wick 3 Movie Logo Revealed At Licensing Expo

The first logo for John Wick 3 has arrived. Keanu Reeves’ career as an action lead was revitalized in a major way with the launch of the John Wick franchise. Reeves plays the former hired gun who gets pulled back into the lifestyle he left behind after some tragic losses. His need for revenge has served the story for two films so far, and next year will see John on the run as the entire assassin community will be after him. And after the success the franchise has experienced so far, Lionsgate is moving Wick into an ultra-competitive summer next year.

Since there are still several months before John Wick 3 hits theaters, there’s been hardly any marketing for the movie outside of a photo here and there. Instead, most of the attention for the movie has come from Reeves talking about it himself. Well, the marketing campaign may be gearing up to start as the official logo has now been revealed.

Related: Keanu Reeves Escapes On A Horse In John Wick 3 Photo

Dirtees provided the first look at John Wick 3‘s logo straight from the Brand Licensing Expo in London. The logo, which could be a concept and not the final design, is rather simplistic. The outline of Wick takes the place of the “I” in his last name, while it switches the franchise to Roman numerals. The design itself is one thing, but what some may be surprised by is the actual title itself.

Studios and marketing teams traditionally like to stay consistent with franchise titles, but John Wick 3 could be an example of change. The movie was previously referred to as John Wick: Chapter 3 (and still is on the social media pages for the film). It is possible that the third installment has dropped the “Chapter” altogether, or could further point to this not being the final logo design.

However, Reeves himself made this a bit more complicated when he said that John Wick: Parabellum was the title and revealed the meaning behind it. This came after the working title was changed from Alpha Cop to Parabellum right before production began. It is possible that Reeves was simply explaining how they chose the working title as it related to Wick’s actual story and it was mistakenly thought that Parabellum was the movie’s title.

We will hopefully get complete clarity on John Wick 3 and its title sooner rather than later. Since it is moving to the summer season, the marketing needs to be a bit more aggressive to make sure the movie isn’t lost among a slew of blockbusters. The threequel does have an impressive cast that includes Halle Berry, but it may need an extra dose of the franchise’s gun-fu to really sell audiences on coming back one more time.

The Disney-Fox Deal Will Close January 2019

The Walt Disney Company and 21st Century Fox’s major merger is coming together faster than anticipated and will now officially be completed on January 1, 2019. Fox has plenty of success over the years through a variety of media outlets, but determined they could not properly compete in the movie and TV space. They looked to sell these branches of the company and quickly found Disney to be their preferred buyer. Comcast attempted to pull the deal out from under Disney’s reaches, but simply made them pay them pay $71 billion for Fox’s assets instead of the initial $54 billion bid.

There has been plenty of resistance to the deal because of the monopoly Disney continues to grow and the job losses that will come from it. From Disney’s perspective, they view the Fox acquisition as a great way to enhance their library of content prior to launching their own streaming service late next year. Throughout the process, it was anticipated that summer 2019 would be when the deal would close, but it’ll actually be much sooner.

Related: What Will Happen to Fox’s R-Rated Franchises Under Disney?

Variety shared the news that 21st Century Fox president Peter Rice told Fox employees the merger will be “ready to close” on January 1, 2019. This effectively means that 2018 will be the final year for this current look of Fox and moves up the timeline for the merger as a result.

Disney and Fox shareholders officially approved the terms of the merger back in July, less than a month after the Department of Justice approved the deal on their own. The studios have since been seeking approval in various countries around the world, while also figuring out the new hierarchy of Disney in a post-merger landscape. For Rice’s part, he’s joining Disney as a top TV executive. Disney recently made several of these types of moves official, while other executives have already found jobs elsewhere for when the merger closes.

The accelerated timetable of the deal comes after reports that a late 2018 finalization could be possible. They will miss this mark by a day it appears, as both studios now hope to become one at the turn of the calendar year. This is all barring some unforeseen mishap with the deal, but considering how well the deal has gone so far, it is difficult to imagine anything coming up now that would hinder them from completing the deal on Jan 1. After all, Rice told this to all of Fox’s current employees in a town-hall setting at their Los Angeles studio, so they must be confident that this date will stick. How quickly changes, such as cancellation of some projects or Marvel Studios’ plans for the X-Men, are made from then on remain to be seen. But, we do at least now know when the merger will be completed.

Little Mermaid Rumor: Lady Gaga Possibly Up for Ursula Role

Disney is rumored to want Lady Gaga as part of their live-action The Little Mermaid movie cast. The Mouse House has found great success remaking films from their animated library in a new way. These big budget live-action takes on the stories have made the studio billions, and that’s only the beginning, with properties like The Lion KingAladdin, and Mulan on their way in the next two years. One of the other IPs they’re looking to bring to the big screen in this new light is beloved film The Little Mermaid.

The studio has been mulling a live-action Little Mermaid for the past two years, and some progress has been made. Even before the buzz for Mary Poppins Returns truly begins, Disney reportedly already courted its director Rob Marshall to tackle this next. There’s still no indication when the movie will be made, but the latest rumor shares which rising star Disney is reportedly eyeing.

Related: All the Live-Action Disney Remakes In Development

The Disinsider shared a rumor regarding a name they’ve heard is high up on Disney’s wish list for a role in Little Mermaid: Lady Gaga. The outlet notes that this is an unconfirmed report they are hearing, and one that Disney representatives declined to comment on, so this rumor should be treated as such and taken with a grain of salt for now. However, if this is true, it’s believed that Gaga is being considered for the villain role in the movie as Ursula.

Gaga is currently enjoying overwhelming praise for her performance in Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born. Her efforts both as an actress and as a singer in the movie have blown away critics and general moviegoers alike. This buzz also reportedly had her in consideration for a role in Birds of Prey. That didn’t pan out, and now it could be Disney’s live-action department that adds her. It would be a huge coup for the project, and give them someone with legitimate talent as a singer to bring the sea witch to life.

The prospect of Gaga joining Little Mermaid comes on the heels of Zendaya previously being rumored to have an offer on the table to play Ariel. That has yet to be confirmed too, but the rising actress is open to taking on the role. A potential Little Mermaid live-action movie led by Zendaya and Lady Gaga would be quite the impressive start to the cast. If either or both do join the movie, expect Disney to go after similarly big names for the roles of Eric, King Triton, and the voices of Flounder and Sebastian. Hopefully these castings do pan out, and some official updates on The Little Mermaid aren’t too far away.

Zoe Saldana Teases Her Return As Gamora On Avengers 4 Set

Zoe Saldana teases her return as Gamora in Avengers 4. Even before reshoots for the Phase 3 capper began, the actress already let it slip that she’d be back as Gamora, despite her fate in Avengers: Infinity War. However, it wasn’t until now that fans finally learned that she’s partaking in the scheduled reshoots that will serve to wrap-up the blockbuster sequel.

One of the most integral relationships in Infinity War was that of Gamora and Thanos, who were finally reunited for the first time following the former joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite what his adopted daughter thought of him, it turns out that the intergalactic villain did love Gamora, which helped make the Mad Titan compelling to viewers. With his goal of balancing the universe now fulfilled, Thanos is enjoying retirement, but with the surviving heroes gearing up to avenge the universe following the galactic genocide, the original Avengers may have one more ally to help them take down Thanos, in the form of Gamora.

Related: Bradley Cooper Defends the Thanos Snap: He Has a Point

Taking to Instagram, Saldana posted an image of her getting prepped to reprise the Gamora role for Avengers 4. The caption may have indicated “flashback,” but it could very well be in reference to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” which lyrics she used in the caption. Additionally, actress Karen Gillan (Gamora’s sister Nebula) also added an Instagram story of her being made-up, using it to announce her last day on set. While some wondered if Saldana’s post might have been a throwback to a prior shoot, the fact that Gillan was on set at the same time lends credence to Saldana’s image being new. Check out Saldana and Gillan’s posts below.

While it’s no secret that Avengers 4 will bring back characters who were dead by the end of Infinity War, resurrecting Gamora will be a bit trickier compared to those who were affected by Thanos’ snap. Instead of being turned to dust, the character was thrown off a cliff, as her life was sacrificed in exchange for the Mad Titan to get the Soul Stone. Of course, since fans don’t really know much about how exactly the exchange works – with a young Gamora seemingly reunited with Thanos in the Soul World – there’s a possibility that she was just trapped in the alternate dimension like some popular theories claim. That said, Marvel Studios would have to craft a solid explanation if they decide to revive her, so as not to cheapen the impact of her emotional death in Avengers 3.

Otherwise, Gamora can appear in Avengers 4 in flashbacks or via time travel. Loki, who also died differently from those who were snapped out of existence, looks likely to make a return in the still-untitled sequel, after leaked set images made their way online last year. His involvement, however, is believed to be limited to flashbacks, as the film revisits the Battle of New York, which he was an integral part of. Considering Gamora’s large part in Thanos’ history, not to mention the fact that Nebula is still around, the sisters’ relationship with their adoptive father could be further explored, and might even factor into the villain’s defeat.

Suicide Squad Director Supports James Gunn For Sequel

Suicide Squad director David Ayer supports the hiring of James Gunn for Suicide Squad 2. Warner Bros. and DC found varying degrees of success with the first Suicide Squad movie. The film grossed nearly $750 million worldwide, despite extremely negative reviews. The criticisms largely fell on the shoulders of its director David Ayer. But, WB still expressed interest in working with him on a Harley Quinn spinoff Gotham City Sirens, while Gavin O’Connor was originally hired to direct Task Force X’s sequel.

O’Connor quietly left the project recently, leaving the job open for the taking, and the latest report says fired Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn will write and possibly direct. The news came with reports that this won’t be a true sequel, and could instead see Gunn bring his own style, tone, and cast to the film. Some fans are understandably upset that WB may be willing to throw away everything from the first film, but Ayer isn’t.

Related: James Gunn Is Better Suited For Suicide Squad Than Guardians

A fan asked Ayer on Twitter for his thoughts on Gunn’s hiring, and the report that he could basically do whatever he wants. Instead of Ayer firing back at WB for potentially wiping away what he brought to Suicide Squad’s characters and their universe, he feels like Gunn is an excellent choice, and that this move overall is great for DC.

This could obviously be a difficult scenario for fans of the first Suicide Squad. Although it wasn’t perfect, plenty still found the movie to be quite enjoyable, thanks in large part to the titular characters. Gunn potentially restarting the franchise with a brand new cast would eliminate any character work and relationships from before. But, one has to respect Ayer for voicing this opinion, even if it means years of his own work may have been for nought.

Before fans get too upset with the possibility of Gunn’s relaunch, it’s best to wait for official details to come out. The reboot report had no details on what that would entail, so it’s still possible that some of the more well-received characters could return. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Will Smith’s Deadshot are the two most likely candidates to remain, while Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinneman’s Rick Flag, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, or Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc could all return too. Even if none of them do, and Gunn starts from scratch completely with the characters, mythology, and so on, Ayer’s support will hopefully go a long way in calming any sections of the fanbase that may not be thrilled with where Suicide Squad 2 could be heading.

Rambo 5 Officially Titled Last Blood

The fifth movie in the Rambo franchise is officially titled Rambo 5: Last Blood. Back when Sylvester Stallone was solidifying himself as a major movie star on the back of the Rocky franchise, Stallone boarded another project that would ultimately take up years of his life. He first played John Rambo in 1982’s First Blood. He returned for two sequels by 1988, then wasn’t seen again as the highly-skilled soldier for a decade. Another decade has since passed Rambo by, but Stallone is finally ready to return to his roots.

The last few months have been filled with updates on the next Rambo movie, one that will see Rambo return to American soil. Stallone shared some first look images from the movie recently that tease his new rancher lifestyle, but it’ll be a conflict with human traffickers which bring him back into action – possibly for the final time.

THR confirmed that the fifth movie in the franchise is officially titled Rambo 5: Last Blood. The title alludes to Rambo’s story coming full circle after the first film was simply titled First Blood. The direct sequel continued this trend in a way by calling it Rambo: First Blood Part II. There was hardly consistency from that point on, with the third film titled Rambo III before the fourth entry was simply called Rambo.

The confirmed subtitle for Rambo 5 has a finality to it that could make fans of the character nervous. Stallone’s been revisiting several iconic roles as of late, and is putting his familiar characters through the ringer. Rocky Balboa got cancer in Creed and could die as soon as this November in Creed II. Rambo could have a similarly short life expectancy. Even if he manages to make it out of the fifth movie alive, titling the movie Last Blood indicates that it will be the final installment of the franchise. Now, crazy success critically or financially could eventually change that, but this appears to be the direction Rambo 5 is heading.

Filming on Last Blood is currently underway as Stallone has confirmed, but not much else is set for the movie officially. Paz Vega just joined the cast as a reporter who works with Rambo following the kidnapping of her half-sister. Casting for the sister and her kidnappers hasn’t yet been announced. Get the Gringo‘s Adrian Grunberg is set to direct the film, which is expected to hit theaters in fall 2019. As long as production continues to move along smoothly and the casting process doesn’t have any hiccups, Rambo 5: Last Blood will be here before fans know it.
