Deadpool 3: David Leitch Hasn’t Heard From Disney Yet

David Leitch hasn’t heard anything about Deadpool 3 yet following the finalization of the Disney/Fox deal earlier this year. At one point deemed a risk due to its vulgar, adult-orientated content, the Deadpool franchise became the most popular films in Fox’s X-Men series, combining to gross $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. It’s for that reason the Mouse House has no plans to reboot the Deadpool character; the current iteration is doing phenomenally well, so there’s little incentive to change things up.

Still, the future of Deadpool on film remains uncertain. Deadpool 2 ended in a way that essentially set up the X-Force spinoff (which had Drew Goddard onboard to direct), but X-Force was one of multiple Marvel-based Fox films that were shelved indefinitely back in January, months before the Fox/Disney deal became official. And while Marvel Studios is hard at work ironing out Phase 4 of the MCU, there’s been no word on what’s next for the Merc With a Mouth. Right now, all remains quiet on that front.

Speaking with ComicBook at the premiere of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Leitch was asked about upcoming Deadpool projects, including a Deadpool 3. According to the director, he’s still waiting for a call:

“In everybody’s world, everybody wants to make it. So, if I was ever approached to make Deadpool 3, my answer would be, ‘Hell yes,’ but I think there’s a lot of things going on in the shake up with Fox and Disney and where that whole Marvel world after Endgame is gonna be. When the dust settles, let’s hope that Deadpoool lives. That’s kind of ironic, right?”

In all likelihood, more Deadpool movies will happen at some point. Earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Iger went on record to state he wants to keep the property R-rated, but may keep it separate from the larger MCU (which would honestly be for the best). The trick is finding the opportune time to move forward with them, and it’s understandable why nothing’s been officially announced yet. Disney only inherited X-Men and Deadpool in March and have had a full plate on their hands dealing with everything associated with the Fox deal. As Leitch indicates, once the dust settles there might be some real discussions about what’s next for Deadpool. The franchise is very popular, so Disney will surely look to continue it in one way or another.

Leitch isn’t the only one associated with the Deadpool franchise curious to see where things go. Earlier this month, Josh Brolin (who plays Cable) revealed he’s called Marvel Studios to talk about the character’s future, so there’s widespread interest on making something happen soon. There probably won’t be any hints during Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated Hall H panel during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, but hopefully soon Deadpool fans find something out – whether it’s for X-Force, Deadpool 3or something else entirely.

Hilarious Fan Edit Casts Stranger Things’ David Harbour as Hopper P.I.

SPOILERS for Stranger Things 3

Stranger Things has received a fan edit in the style of 1980s television show Magnum P.I., featuring David Harbour’s Hopper and titled Hopper P.I. The short, trailer-like edit features a lot of Hopper’s pivotal scenes in season 3 in his Hawaiian shirt accompanied by Magnum P.I.‘s theme music. Season 3 of Stranger Things saw Hopper take on a more outright aggressive role, which the edit happily takes advantage of.

Stranger Things season 3 has been one of Netflix’s most popular releases yet, setting viewing records with over 40 million people watching at least some of the show since its debut. It also features some of the most shocking moments of the entire show, including the apparent death of Hopper, Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers and family moving out of Hawkins, and Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven seemingly losing her powers. This sets up what could very well be the show’s most vitally different season yet in 4 (should it be renewed). Still, despite potentially being dead, it hasn’t stopped fans from imagining what Hopper could look like in his very own show.

Related: What To Expect From Stranger Things Season 4

Posted on Twitter by user Eddie Spuhghetti, Hopper P.I. imagines Harbour’s Hopper as his very own private investigator. The intro was recorded on VHS to add more of a time period-appropriate feel and features many of Hopper’s scenes in season 3 of Stranger Things. Also tagging along is Joyce Byers as Wheelbarrow and Brett Gelman’s Murray Bauman as himself. Check out the fan edit below.

While Hopper is most likely dead in Stranger Things (unless he proves to be “the American” that the Russians are holding captive), it’s still really fun to imagine the character getting his own spinoff in the same style as Magnum P.I. This is made even more fun because of the character’s far more erratic and angry nature in the latest season of the show. And given the high popularity of season 3, it seems almost a waste for Netflix not to at least consider pursuing spinoffs, especially if the show is nearing the end of its run. Given Netflix’s penchant for canceling high profile shows lately, it’s not a stretch to imagine Stranger Things ending sooner rather than later (though there are reports that people are rejoining Netflix just to watch the show).

Regardless, this is a fun fan edit that captures the 1980s nostalgia feel that Stranger Things has become known for throughout its 3-season run. Even if nothing actually happens in the spinoff area, fans can probably expect more of these fan edits to pop up over the coming months. Perhaps even a buddy comedy edit centered around Steve Harrington and Dustin Henderson. Only time will tell.

David Fincher Directing Biopic Mank for Netflix, Gary Oldman to Star

David Fincher is directing the biopic Mank for Netflix about Citizen Kane co-writer Herman Mankiewicz, with Gary Oldman set to star. Although Mankiewicz is best known as Orson Welles screenwriting partner on Citizen Kane – for which they received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay – he worked on many other films throughout his career, including The Wizard of Oz, The Pride of the Yankees and Duck Soup.

The Mankiewicz biopic will be Fincher’s first feature film since 2014’s Gone Girl. Since then, he’s worked mostly in television producing and directing Netflix shows, including House of Cards, Mindhunter, and Love, Death & Robots. Fincher has considerable experience in the biopic genre too: he directed Oscar-winner The Social Network in 2010, and was set to direct Steve Jobs before he was replaced by Danny Boyle.

Variety reports that Fincher’s latest biopic is titled Mank – a reference to Mankiewicz’s nickname – and is based on a script penned by the director’s late father Jack Fincher before his death in 2003. Fincher will produce the film alongside his producer wife Ceán Chaffin and Douglas Urbanski, and intends to shoot the movie in black and white with production slated to begin this November. Plot details are currently unknown, but Variety reports that sources close to the project say the film will focus on Mankiewicz’s involvement with the development of the script for Citizen Kane, which saw he and Welles almost come to blows over who should be credited.

Star Gary Oldman is certainly no stranger to a biopic. Over the course of his career he’s portrayed many real-life people, including punk rocker Sid Vicious in Sid & Nancy, composer Ludwig van Beethoven in Immortal Beloved, and presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK. More recently, Oldman tacked the role of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, which won him an Oscar for best actor, and will soon play Jürgen Mossack, co-founder of Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, in The Laundromat – another upcoming Netflix production about the Panama Papers scandal, directed by Steven Soderbergh. It’ll be interesting to see what Oldman makes of Mankiewicz – a man described by his peers as both charming and witty but a hard drinker too.

Netflix seems taken with the biopic genre lately. In addition to The Laundromat, the streaming giant also recently released The Dirt – a biopic about infamous rock band Mötley Crüe. It’s also teaming up with legendary director Martin Scorsese to make a biopic about mob enforcer Frank Sheeran called The Irishman, and developing a Hulk Hogan biopic with Chris Hemsworth set to star. We’ll update you on the progress of Mank when more information is revealed.

Deadwood Creator David Milch Reveals Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Creator of HBO’s Deadwood, David Milch, has revealed that he’s been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The somber announcement comes just ahead of the premiere of Deadwood: The Movie, set to air next month.

Hailed as one of the most exceptional TV dramas of all time, the western series set in the 1800s follows the townsfolk of Deadwood, South Dakota – a town riddled with crime, corruption, and commotion. Imbued with historical truths and fictional elements, Deadwood was conceptualized by Milch, who also produced and primarily wrote the show. The raw and powerful HBO original series was mainly noted for the cast’s powerhouse performances. Starring Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane, Deadwood’s ensemble also included, Molly Parker, W. Earl Brown, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, Anna Gunn, John Hawkes, and Kim Dickens. After three compelling and award-winning seasons, HBO canceled Deadwood in 2006 due to budgetary issues. Milch – along with fervent fans – kept faith in a Deadwood resurrection to give the show a proper conclusion. After a decade of negotiations with HBO and aligning the stars of the series’ schedules, Deadwood: The Movie is bringing fans back to the Old West. Penned by Milch, stars of the project have raved about the script – calling it Milch’s best work ever. However, due to his diagnosis, the film’s premiere will be bittersweet.

Milch revealed in an interview with Vulture what it’s been like to live with his diagnosis. Once pegged as a micromanager during Deadwood’s original run, Milch has eased up on the reigns of the production process for the film. Notorious for demanding reshoots and last-minute script changes, Milch often found difficulty sharing creative control. For the film, Milch invited series veterans David Minahan and Regina Corrado to assist in the daily operations and creative duties. Milch first noticed trouble was amiss five years ago. Family and friends began to notice his “imperfect recall and tardy recall and short temper”. A brain scan last year confirmed that Milch has Alzheimer’s disease. He spoke of his diagnosis:

As best I understand it, which is minimally, I have a deterioration in the organization of my brain. And it’s progressive. And in some ways discouraging. In more than some ways – in every way I can think of.

Milch has also opened up about how he believes his father suffered from Alzheimer’s disease near the end of his life. He said of the realization, “That was a while ago, and the diagnosis was not as sophisticated or specific, but in retrospect, he exhibited all the symptoms of the illness.” Despite his prognosis, Milch has remained passionate for the course of Deadwood: The Movie. He also plans to continue writing. Milch’s wife has declared he shows no signs of slowing down and expressed, “I compare it to a musician who can still play and has access to the memory of how to do that and is still able to exercise his talent. The brain is David’s most exercised muscle.”

As the sun sets on Deadwood, Milch is shedding light on a tragic disease. Milch joins other celebrities coming forward with health issues, including Jeopardy!’s Alex Trebek’s cancer diagnosis and Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke suffering from near-fatal aneurysms. While they join numerous others suffering from the same diagnosis, representation is important. Celebrities help bring awareness, and opening up about their experiences can provide hope, and perhaps funding, towards fighting back. HBO has declared their support for the creator of one of their most iconic shows, and fans eagerly await the reveal of Milch’s brilliant work in the film version of Deadwood.

David Harbour Details How Hellboy Would Approach a Fight With Thanos

New Hellboy star David Harbour has revealed how his demonic superhero character would be able to defeat Marvel’s Mad Titan Thanos. First created by Mike Mignola back in 1993, Hellboy has become a cult favorite character thanks to his many appearances in Dark Horse Comics as well as the two Hellboy movies made by Guillermo del Toro. Hellboy’s return to the screen in 2019 has not gone well however, as the Hellboy reboot was met with scathing reviews by critics and yawns of indifference from the movie going public.

While Hellboy has largely failed to cross over to mainstream success as a movie character, the same can’t be said for Marvel Comics villain Thanos. After his devastating appearance in last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos has gone on to become an iconic movie villain on par with Darth Vader. Thanos is so popular in fact that many fans actually sympathize with him even though he wiped out half the people in the universe with his infamous snap. The Avengers of course have plans to bring down Thanos in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, and fans could not be more hyped to see how that final battle plays out.

Related: Hellboy’s After-Credits Scenes Explained

When it comes to defeating Thanos, Hellboy himself has some thoughts about how the Mad Titan could be tackled. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Hellboy actor David Harbour shared his ideas on how psychological tactics could be employed to undermine Thanos’ confidence and knock him off his game. Harbour said:

“I mean it’d be a good fight. That Thanos guy is pretty powerful, but I think Hellboy would win the emotional fight by just making fun of the very serious way he takes himself and the way he takes himself in his Malthusian philosophies. I think Hellboy would have a field day with that and cut him down to size with one-liners.”

Harbour certainly has a point about Hellboy being a much more humorous character than Thanos, who on the evidence provided in Infinity War has no sense of humor whatsoever. Harbour’s theory on how to beat Thanos now goes into the giant pile with all the other fan theories about how the Avengers will tackle the universe’s most powerful being in Endgame. The most popular recent Thanos fan theory, involving Ant-Man and a certain part of Thanos’ anatomy, seems only slightly less likely than the idea of beating the Mad Titan with cutting remarks. Somewhat more plausible is the theory that somehow the Avengers will get the Infinity Gauntlet away from Thanos and use it to defeat him. Another likely theory sees the Quantum Realm coming into play as the Avengers seek to gain an advantage on the all-powerful bad guy. Of course, coming off her debut in Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers is now on board as the Avengers’ secret weapon.

It remains to be seen how the Avengers will beat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. As for Hellboy, it seems the cult favorite character is down for the count after the reboot bombed at the box office.

Hellboy Can’t Have Sex With Humans, Says David Harbour

David Harbor reveals that his version of Hellboy cannot have sex with humans. This is just one of a few key differences between the original 2004 Hellboy movie, starring Ron Perlman, and the reboot in which Harbour stars as the demonic beast who becomes a superhero. Those differences initially became apparent when the first trailer for the new Hellboy film dropped late last year. It depicted a movie that was considerably more bloody, as well as more focused on the supernatural and horror elements from the Hellboy comics.

In the original film, Hellboy and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D) was a secret organization that no one knew about. In the new movie, Hellboy is walking around in public, so humans are aware of him and what he does. The monsters in the new film come straight from the pages of the comics written by Mike Mignola. Hellboy himself is more conflicted about who and what he is and what he does, and is, apparently, the rightful King of England (the trailer shows him wielding Excalibur, the legendary sword). One of the most distinguishing differences between the two movies, though, is the cast of characters. The new film doesn’t feature either Abe Sapien or Hellboy’s human girlfriend from the original movies, Liz Sherman.

Related: Karl Ruprecht Kroenen: Hellboy Villain In Comics, Original Movie & Reboot

One of the main reasons behind Liz’s absence, though, was recently revealed by Harbour in an interview with When discussing the human character of Alice Monaghan (Sasha Lane), Harbour said:

“Yeah, it’s an avuncular relationship [with Alice]. I mean, it’s funny because in an earlier draft, there was the temptation to do that, and I was very adamant to the fact that Hellboy cannot have sex with human women. Like I don’t want that to ever be an issue, and I want it to be known for him, whereas this is this Blood Queen Witch in the movie, right? So there is a world that he can exist sexually in, but it is not in our human universe. And Alice is, even though she has sort of a witchcraft thing to her, she is a human being. And so, I think Hellboy is very, you know, it’s much more of an avuncular relationship. He would never, yeah.”

Harbour also discussed how he researched the Hellboy comics and studied the character’s gestures and facial expressions. The reboot takes a lot of inspiration from the comic books, with Mignola involved with the process from the beginning of production. Harbour believes that the result is something less like a typical superhero movie but more like grittier antihero films, such as Deadpool and Logan.

Although fans of the Perlman-starring Hellboy movies continue to clamor for his return to the role, the reboot of the franchise has pretty much sealed that particular coffin forever. Perlman himself advocated for a third movie in his Hellboy series, but as that didn’t happen, it seems he’s become jaded by the process. He previously opened up about probably never playing another superhero again, as he felt the only one he connected with was Hellboy. He also mentioned that at 68, his days of portraying those kinds of characters were probably over. However, Hellboy fans are going to get a more comic-accurate story on the big screen, and that’s likely to keep them happy, especially if there are sequels.

Christopher Nolan’s New Film Casts BlacKkKlansman’s John David Washington

Christopher Nolan’s mysterious event film casts BlacKkKlansman star John David Washington. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. slated the director’s next project for July 2020, but the general public has been kept in the dark about it ever since. Plot details are virtually nonexistent, with rumors about it potentially being a romantic thriller that mixes North by Northwest with Inception seemingly debunked. Still, Nolan’s involvement guarantees the movie will remain a point of interest amongst cinephiles as they patiently await official information.

Washington, star of acting legend Denzel Washington, experienced a major breakout last year via his role as Ron Stallworth in Spike Lee’s Best Picture nominee BlacKkKlansman. In the historical drama, the younger Washington proved he inherited his father’s acting chops and could carry a compelling film on his shoulders. Though he was snubbed by the Oscars, Washington did receive Golden Globe and SAG nominations for his BlacKkKlansman performance, and his work clearly caught the eye of Nolan. The two are set to collaborate on Nolan’s next project.

Related: Every Christopher Nolan Movie Ranked, Worst to Best

Variety reports Washington has been cast as the lead in Nolan’s upcoming movie. Unsurprisingly, specifics about Washington’s role are being kept under wraps for the time being – though the part was “highly coveted.” Given Nolan’s pedigree, that shouldn’t be a shock.

BlacKkKlansman put Washington on the map, but working with Nolan should make his profile grow exponentially. Nolan is one of the most successful filmmakers of the 21st century, as his movies typically perform very well at the box office (Dunkirk, with its unorthodox structure and relatively unknown cast, still earned $526.9 million worldwide) and garner widespread critical praise. Nolan’s protagonists tend to be obsessed people tortured or haunted by something traumatic from their past, so it’ll be interesting to see how Washington’s character compares to the likes of Inception’s Dom Cobb, Memento’s Leonard, and Bruce Wayne of the Dark Knight trilogy. Whatever Nolan has in store, Washington possesses the range and talent to deliver another strong performance. In BlacKkKlansman, he was able to delicately balance the film’s humorous and serious elements to craft a dynamic character.

Nolan plans to begin filming later this year, so this is likely the first of many updates that’ll come out in the near future. The fact there’s so much secrecy surrounding it is highly intriguing, and many are curious to find out what the film is all about. Since it’s being released in IMAX, it’s reasonable to assume it’ll be another one of Nolan’s trademark big-scale spectacles that looks to immerse viewers with jaw-dropping set pieces and visual effects. Lending credence to that is Variety saying the project is a “massive, innovative blockbuster.” Time will tell what he has in store (and who else will join Washington in the cast), but this is already shaping up to be one of 2020’s must-see titles.
