The Vampire Diaries Universe: 5 Strongest Friendships (& 5 Weakest)

The Vampire Diaries and its two spin-offs, The Originals and Legacies, have brought us interesting storylines, captivating characters, and epic romances. In addition, each show focused on family unity, complexity, and redemption.

Everything is amplified with these supernatural and human beings: their loves, hates, hurts, and friendships. While there could be a long list of the friendships present in The Vampire Diaries Universe,  we narrowed it down to the top 5 strongest and the top 5 weakest.

10 Strongest: Stefan and Lexi

We begin the list on an exceptionally strong note with The Vampire Diaries’ Stefan and Lexi. These two consider each other best friends and have known each other for decades. Stefan, a brooding character, lightens up with Lexi around.

In Season 1, Lexi is back in town for Stefan’s birthday. With Lexi, Stefan smiles more, even entertains dancing around. They reminisce about a time when they met Bon Jovi. Stefan asks Lexi if Bon Jovi would remember them, and Lexi quips back, “We’ll make him remember us.” Apart from having a good time together, Lexi calls Stefan out. When she meets Elena and sees that she looks exactly like Stefan’s former love, Katherine, she confronts him, “Are you out of your freaking mind.” When Stefan dies, Lexi is waiting for him on the other side. There is no better friend than that.

9 Weakest: Elijah and Marcel

In The Originals, Marcel always seemed part of the family, but still apart from the original family of vampires. Klaus considered Marcel a son. For Rebekah, he was the most epic love of her life. Elijah, seemingly the most civil of his family, also loved Marcel.

However, when a prophecy suggested that Marcel was going to kill Elijah’s original family or at least mark the downfall, Elijah had no problem in killing Marcel. This shows that Elijah never really considered Marcel a part of the family. Luckily for us, Marcel came back. Their friendship did not.

8 Strongest: Elena and Bonnie

At one point when Katherine (Elena’s doppelganger) had taken over Elena’s body, she asked Matt to tell her which friend Elena liked best–Bonnie or Caroline. Matt tells her that Elena liked both equally.

However, we would disagree. Elena has the stronger bond with Bonnie. She confides in Bonnie in ways that she wouldn’t confide in Caroline. Bonnie sacrifices a lot for Elena again and again. Their friendship may have changed a little throughout The Vampire Diaries, but these two are like those childhood friends that are almost family. No matter what, they will always care for each other.

7 Weakest: Alaric and Dorien

Although both characters are in the other shows, mainly The Vampire Diaries, their friendship can be more easily seen in Legacies.  Alaric serves as the headmaster of the school, and Dorien is the librarian. They are united in their desire to help the supernatural young students.

Both men respect each other, and Alaric frequently depends on Dorien, taking stock in Dorien’s knowledge. However, in the end, due to both liking the same woman, they are no longer friends. For a friendship to be so easily broken, it would have to be a weak friendship to begin with. While they both care about the school, Dorien no longer respects or cares much for Alaric.

6 Strongest: Davina and Josh

Davina and Josh meet in Season 1 of The Originals. Davina, living alone in a church attic to protect her from other witches, develops a friend in Josh. She performs magic to help Josh get Klaus out of his mind (Klaus compelled Josh to do what he wanted). They bond while she helps him, and it takes time to remove Klaus from his mind.

Their friendship continues throughout the series. Josh is probably one of the only vampires (besides Marcel) that Davina really trusts. In Season 3, when she decides to “die” in order to get some witch information from Kol (her witch/vampire dead boyfriend), she chooses Josh to be her lifeline. As he holds her hand, she tells him, “Whatever happens, don’t let go. You’re my link to the living.” That loyalty, trust, and love equals a very strong friendship.

5 Weakest: Stefan and Klaus

As much as we may grow to love Klaus in The Originals, he is very much the villain in The Vampire Diaries. We find out that Klaus and Stefan had been friends during the 1920s when he had his humanity turned off and was a Ripper. Apparently, Klaus misses his old pal, and he forces Stefan to be a Ripper again.

RELATED: The Originals 20 Things Wrong with Klaus We All Choose to Ignore

Friends are supposed to bring out the best in us, but Klaus encourages the worst in Stefan. He makes it seem that the only Stefan that Klaus really enjoys is the worst Stefan. Once Stefan is his better self, Klaus doesn’t find him that interesting.

4 Strongest: Landon and Rafael

Although we don’t know the full details of their history, it is clear that these two are tight. They regard each other as brothers. At first, Rafael (a werewolf) says that he won’t stay at The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted without Landon. Then Landon convinces Rafael to stay.

Later when people are against Landon, Rafael stands up for him and leaves the school to be with his brother. These two are tight, which is why the potential love triangle with Hope is especially dangerous. We hope that these two friends retain their close friendship in Season 2.

3 Weakest: Hayley and Tyler

Back in The Vampire Diaries, Hayley worked to help Tyler break the Klaus-hybrid sire bond. They were helping other werewolf-vampire hybrids do the same. Then Hayley makes a deal with Klaus. In exchange for information about her heritage, twelve hybrids are sacrificed. While Hayley did save Tyler from being one of those twelve, her betrayal showed that she wasn’t a good friend.

RELATED: Legacies 10 Characters from The Originals and The Vampire Diaries that Need a Cameo in Season 2

Later, in The Originals, Tyler kidnaps a very pregnant Hayley and jabs a syringe in her pregnant belly to gather blood from her hybrid baby in order to make a hybrid army against Klaus. Regardless to say, Tyler and Hayley may have been good friends to other characters in these two shows, but they weren’t good friends to each other.

2 Strongest: Bonnie and Damon

While we are willing to call this a tie with Caroline and Stefan, Bonnie and Damon squeak ahead, partly due to their story. These two didn’t start out as friends, and it is fair to say that Bonnie hated Damon. When they are stuck in the prisoner world together, they bond out of necessity. Damon gets back to the real world before Bonnie does. When she does return, she goes immediately to find Damon. Their reunion is joyous with Bonnie giving Damon a flying hug.

At the end of the 6th season, Bonnie’s life was linked to Elena’s by a spell, meaning that while Bonnie was alive, Elena was in a sleep state. While many thought that Damon would just kill Bonnie to get Elena back, Damon didn’t. You could say that it was because he knew that Elena would be unhappy with him when she woke up, but really it was because Bonnie had become his best friend.

1 Weakest: Enzo and Damon

Damon’s friendship with Enzo was when he was at his worst. In a flashback, we see that they met in a science lab where both vampires were being experimented upon in The Vampire Diaries. They worked together to think of an escape plan. When Damon gets out, he leaves Enzo, and Enzo remains experimented upon for years.

While Enzo still gives Damon another chance, we don’t know if we would be as forgiving. At that time of his life, Damon had been one horrible friend. It took many series and a beautiful friendship with Bonnie (and Alaric) to redeem Damon.

The Vampire Diaries Universe, the epic stories, and the complex friendships continues in its last spin-off, Legacies. We are excited to see what other strong and weak friendships will be in it as the show enters Season 2.

9 Boyfriends On Vampire Diaries, Ranked Worst To Best

The Vampire Diaries was a modern supernatural action-romance that followed Elena Gilbert and her friends as they encounter vampires, werewolves, and witches – oh my! This series is a wild ride full of supernatural shenanigans and dramatic moments that are great for a wine and popcorn binge session. There were a lot of couples to root for, with characters falling into eternal love at first sight, only to be torn apart by unfortunate events. Now that the series is over, we can officially assess The Vampire Diaries‘ line of eligible boyfriends and see who is the worst and who is the best.

RELATED: 20 Storylines The Vampire Diaries Wants Us To Forget

9 Klaus

Of course, Klaus was going to rank dead last. While his affection for Caroline did make him a better person and the spin-off series The Originals does make him a more sympathetic character, sympathy does not equal redemption. Klaus does not hesitate to murder those who stand in his way and will sacrifice innocents to get what he wants.

The man sealed his entire family away for centuries over a disagreement. Klaus is a real vampire; a ruthless monster who despises humanity. Klaus’ actions throughout the series mark him as a dangerous individual and a messed up person to be with.

8 Damon

Potentially a controversial entry, Damon was not a great partner. He and Elena have tangible chemistry, but Damon as a boyfriend and a person is not wholly redeemable. His dedication to his loves deserves credit, but he has tried to attack both incarnations of Elena on multiple occasions and has threatened Elena’s loved ones over the course of the series. Damon and Elena have been through a lot together and overcome many obstacles of both supernatural and trivial nature; it is this dedication and effort on Damon’s part, along with his eventual warmth towards humanity that stops him from stooping to Klaus’ level.

7 Silas

Silas takes loyalty and eternal love to a whole new level. Silas was supposed to be with Qetsiyah but became immortal and then human with his true love Amara with varying success. This act created all the doppelgangers and had a direct effect on everyone in the show. Not only did he kill humans, vampires, and both created and destroyed the Other Side.

While Silas was an excellent boyfriend to Amara, he was a terrible boyfriend to his initial partner Qetsiyah, which is something that has been noted when placing him on this list. Talk about a mixed bag boyfriend.

6 Stefan

Another potentially controversial opinion, Stefan is a good boyfriend. He loved Elena totally and stood by her even after they broke up. Their steamy romance in the initial seasons of the show will be remembered fondly by many fans. However, he did try to be with Valerie despite his feelings towards Caroline, which is not fair on either woman. Stefan is a fundamentally good person who generally tries to do the right thing by those he cares about in spite of all the terrible circumstances that surround him. That being said, lying to your partner about your feelings and plans is wrong.

5 Enzo

Enzo is a bit if an enigma. While he does not exactly have the cleanest reputation, but equally he seemed to be a decent boyfriend. While he and Bonnie surprised viewers with their seemingly-out-of-nowhere kiss in season seven, they soon won fans over with their steaming hot romance.

Not only did he and Bonnie have great chemistry, but they were also a much better fit than Bonnie and Jeremy were. Enzo even stayed with Bonnie after his life ended and encouraged her to live her life. Now, Enzo’s spirit follows Bonnie as she travels the world; that’s pretty great, to be honest.

4 Tyler

Poor Tyler, so many terrible things happened to this guy. While he was initially portrayed to be an aggressive and unpleasant jock, it was soon explained that his behavior was down to his werewolf genes. As a partner, he cared deeply for Caroline and did his best to take care of her. However, after she slept with Klaus while they were having difficulties, Tyler completely cut their relationship. Once they had a big fight and released the tension, Tyler and Caroline cared enough about each other to remain friends before his eventual death at the hands of Damon.

3 Jeremy

Jeremy receives a lot of criticism for being mopey or boring in comparison to other candidates on this list. However, he was deeply in love with Vicki in season one, despite their unhealthy relationship. He also did his best by Bonnie in their odd but honest relationship. Most fans were not into the fact that he dated his older sister’s best friend, but it worked for some people.

Unlike many of the tough aggressive candidates on this list, Jeremy is in touch with his feelings and many people appreciate having a sensitive partner by their side. It’s a shame things did not work out for him.

2 Alaric

Alaric is an interesting candidate on this list as he is one of the only long-featured adults in The Vampire Diaries. Not only that, but he actually dated and had decent relationships. His initial relationship with Elena and Jeremy’s aunt Jenna was a sweet and pleasant refresher against the dramatic relationships that the younger characters were having. Then Alaric dated Jo and had a wonderfully loving relationship with her, going so far as to marry and expect children with her. Alaric is a loyal and loving partner who is also skilled and handsome; if Jo had survived, they would have been together for the long haul.

1 Matt

Matt did really well in The Vampire Diaries; he was the only human who remained human during his time during the series. When we first meet him, he was a sweet guy who had just been dumped by Elena after the deaths of her parents. After that, he had a lovely relationship with Caroline that had that lovely high-school sweethearts vibe to it.

However, it was his steamy relationship with Rebekah that really showed his true colors. Matt is a sweet and wonderful boyfriend and remained that way throughout the course of the show. It is for this reason that he is number one on this list.

Vampire Diaries: 20 Things That Make No Sense About Damon And Elena’s Relationship

The core relationship in The Vampire Diaries is between Elena and Damon. Elena did have major friendships with others, and a romantic affair with Damon’s brother Stefan early on, but the show is ultimately about the love between Elena and Damon.

The problem with that is that their relationship occasionally doesn’t make sense. They have their moments of affection, hostility, and friendship, and while there are scenes that do make sense for each one, there seem to be even more that just don’t add up.

Every show has something about it that doesn’t make sense, no matter how hard the writers, creators, and producers attempt to make everything sensible. Sometimes it’s not on purpose, as continuity is forgotten or characters need to act a certain way– different from their usual behavior– to move the plot along.

Damon and Elena seemed to have more issues than any other couple on the show. Maybe that was because they were the focus, and for many episodes and arcs, they were involved in many other relationships – romantic and platonic.

Much of this list contains behaviors that conflict with previous scenes or dialogue. Some other entries extract parts of storylines that involve Damon or Elena and show you how much establishing those characters is important in keeping their relationship believable and consistent. There are, of course spoilers, so anyone who has yet to finish The Vampire Diaries should tread somewhat carefully.

Here are 20 Things That Make No Sense About Damon And Elena’s Relationship.

20 Damon’s Violent Streaks

Damon has a temper. Many of Damon’s violent actions occur because he’s upset with Elena or she has done something to spark his anger. He goes on reckless sprees, hurting many people in the process.

Elena overlooks this about Damon.

Even as a human, Elena’s moral character becomes weak when she glosses over the violence because a part of her sees the good in Damon. A small argument could be made that after she becomes a vampire, Elena understands what Damon goes through, butElena never had as many outbursts as Damon.

Is that enough to foster a solid relationship – friendship or romantic? For most couples, a temper that results in people getting wiped out would be a relationship-ender.

19 Books to TV Show Inconsistencies

The creators changed some aspects of Elena and Damon and their relationship from the novel series.

In the books, Elena was selfish and always got what she wants. This is different than the caring and loving person in the show. Damon is a completely different vampire who really hated his brother, Stefan.

However, the one thing that remained the same between the TV show and books is Damon’s reactions when he makes advances towards Elena. Elena in the books rejects him constantly, which causes him to lash out with jealousy.

If you haven’t read the books, Elena eventually chooses Stefan as her life partner for eternity.

18 Shallow Feelings from Elena

For many of the early seasons, Elena struggled with her feelings for Damon and Stefan. Damon tried to get her to confess her love for him. She fought it, but somehow managed to reciprocate the same kind of emotion back to Damon.

But that was only on the surface. Elena seemed like she couldn’t grasp what she was really feeling for Damon.

It was obvious to fans that, deep down, she still loved Stefan no matter what she felt for Damon.

That didn’t make sense, since she allowed those outward affections to overtake anything she had for Stefan. It’s almost like she was so defeated and exhausted from the emotions that it was easier for her to simply choose Damon.

17 Elena Forgives Damon For Everything

At its most basic level, Damon and Elena’s relationship is based on control, fear, and physical attraction. Unlike Elena and Stefan as a couple, Elena and Damon have no solid foundation to sustain a long-term relationship.

The main problem is that Damon abuses Elena emotionally and physically way too many times. She shouldn’t simply say, “I see something good in him” to stay with Damon. For example, Damon broke Elena’s hand when she tried to slap him out of frustration. He caught the hand and squeezed it until her bones snapped.

When Elenawent to save her boyfriend at a lake, Damon threw her into that lake because he was jealous. But Elena constantly forgives him, no matter how badly he treats her.

16 Damon loved her doppelganger first

Damon’s returned to Mystic Falls for one reason: to help the woman he loved – Katherine Pierce – for over a century escape the tomb she was in. When he went to free Katherine, he learned she had already left the tomb and never came looking for Damon.

He had been in love with Katherine, but she had never loved him back. As time went on, Damon grew to dislike Katherine. However, he started to befriend Katherine’s doppelganger, who happened to be Elena.

Wouldn’t this cause some awkwardness for Damon?

The woman he had loved for 145 years never returned those same feelings, but here is Elena, who he grew to like, then love. Emotions aside, Elena looking like Katherine probably should have caused more resentment, but things between them progressed as if Elena wasn’t a doppelganger.

15 Too many break ups and make ups

If you take a look at the Damon and Elena’s relationship from his point of view, you might get the impression that he’s indifferent to having Elena in his life. When they are together and “good” (meaning Damon hasn’t gone on a violent streak or done something to Elena’s friends) they are really good.

But they break up multiple times. Once, he claims he broke up with her when she attended college because he saw how he was changing her, so he broke up with her. He tends to cast their relationship, no matter what type it is, aside without another thought. He tries to move on.

When the desire is too great to resist, and they decide to get back together, all is forgiven, which is a big theme between Damon and Elena.

14 Damon shares blood with Elena while she’s still with Stefan

When The Vampire Diaries had Elena share Damon’s blood, creator Julie Plec said that it’s “a little bit of a shout-out to the books.” Blood sharing, we learn from the show, is a very intimate experience.

In one episode, Damon decides to share his blood with Elena. Except Elena is still with Stefan at this point. And being very intimate, as Plec says, “you really shouldn’t be doing it with anybody who’s not your one true vampire love.”

Elena had no idea what was going on, but Damon did.

Stefan was furious, but Elena didn’t seem quite as upset as Stefan. Once again, it was Damon’s selfish behavior that threw a wrench in things.

13 Damon attacked her little brother

In the season two episode “The Return”, Damon finds out that Katherine never loved him. He goes to Elena’s place to wait for her. When she shows up, Damon and Elena have a talk.

Damon informs Elena that she is hiding her true feelings for him from herself, so he kisses her. Elena finds it necessary to tell him that, while she truly cares about Damon, her life will always be with Stefan.

This angers Damon greatly. And in response to Elena, Damon finds her brother Jeremy and snaps his neck. Elena does tell Stefan that she hates Damon, but when Damon and her finally get together, the incident with her brother is completely forgotten. Jeremy did come back to life later.

12 Damon got with her mother

At the time Damon and Isobel start their relationship, Damon is a cured vampire. Damon had turned Isobel into a vampire, who then returned to Mystic Falls later. Isobel wished to cause harm to Elena, who happened to be her daughter.

Elena doesn’t seem bothered by the fact Damon got with her birth mother.

It is possible that Elena doesn’t know, but you have to assume when Isobel threatened Elena, she probably used her past with Damon to cause further issues.

Another reason Elena probably doesn’t seem bothered is that Damon and Isobel only had a physical affair. Still, if Elena had learned how violent he was to Isobel to make her leave town, Elena would be bothered.

11 Damon Used his Special Powers on Elena in the pilot

In the premiere episode, viewers were treated with a display of Damon’s powers. While Elena was sitting in a cemetery, writing in her diary, Damon conjured fog and crows.

Elena didn’t really freak out. She acted like it was an everyday occurrence. Perhaps she had other stuff on her mind, like the passing of her parents.

Even early on, Elena’s reaction to this new supernatural world around her was sometimes indifferent. With Damon, she focused on getting him to act good, despite knowing what he was capable of.

Maybe she wasn’t all that afraid because she knew something viewers didn’t: that the fog and crow powers would never be used again after the pilot.

10 Damon blames the Sire Bond for Elena’s love

The sire bond is a connection between a vampire and the person they turn. The sired then shows their loyalty by following the orders of their sire– sometimes called a master.

In The Vampire Diaries, Damon creates a sire bond by turning Elena. Elena realizes her strong love for Damon and professes her love to him, but Damon only thinks she is saying that because of the bond.

We learn in the show that the bond only affects actions, not emotions like love.

If anyone should know this, Damon should. He’s over 170 years old and was sired himself by Katherine. Why was he skeptical about her love confession? He pretty much flat-out didn’t believe it.

9 Elena Chooses Damon… Twice

The cornerstone relationship in The Vampire Diaries is between Damon and Elena. They each had other relationships, but it was their love and desire that took center stage in the television program.

Except Elena had to choose Damon twice, which, in the grand scope of the show, didn’t make sense. While the show was on the air – and even to this day – fans were either Team Damon or Team Stefan.

To choose to be with Damon more than once may have meant she had fallen out of love with him– or it could have meant Elena always had feelings for Stefan, who she probably fit better with anyway.

8 The Diaries

The word is in the name of the TV show. If the creators wanted to use the word “diaries” merely to represent an account of the lives in Mystic Falls, then they shouldn’t have teased viewers with actual diaries.

Stefan and Elena had diaries, which were catalysts to how they met. It was interesting to see her viewpoint of events through her human eyes, and vice versa with Stefan. It’s clear the diaries were important.

Thus, it’s understandable why they ended up together in the beginning. But what about Damon? He didn’t start writing in a diary until season 7 and it wasn’t really seen again.

With how much they had in common, Stefan and Elena should have stayed together. Damon and Elena just didn’t have the compatibility.

7 Elena’s Hallucination Relationship with Damon

When Damon perishes, Elena is extremely heartbroken, so she decides to do something drastic. Elena begins taking special substances to induce hallucinations of Damon. She doesn’t want to believe the person she loved is gone.

What she’s doing is dangerous, mainly because of the type and amount of substance she’s ingesting. Eventually, she sees the harm and goes to Alaric to remove the memories of Damon. What doesn’t make sense is what comes before.

Not one of her friends steps up to force some kind of intervention, subtle or direct.

Do some people see it and don’t care? Elena is having a ghost-relationship with Damon at this point, which is an unhealthy way to grieve, but most of her friends apparently feel it’s the right way for Elena. No matter how hazardous.

6 Damon turned Elena and pushed vampire blood on her

Vampires usually turns humans by biting their necks. For the most part, the humans who are turned don’t know what’s happening to them until it’s over and they wake as vampires. Some humans want to change. Elena, however, had no desire to become a vampire. Still, Damon turned her.

While Elena is trying to adapt to drinking animal blood, Damon pushes his own blood on her.

It could be considered selfish, but afterward, Elena was just fine with Damon turning her and giving her his blood. At least, the method wasn’t as painful and violent as some others on the show.

Could she have been angrier at Damon for doing what he did? Sure, but as Elena often did during the show, she forgave him.

5 Damon repeatedly compelled her

Because Damon has the ability to control others through “compelling,” most of his relationships progress this way– included his bond with Elena.

Damon “compelled” her on a few occasions, and essentially controlled her during the sire bond situation.

What makes no sense is that at no time did Elena realize this was happening to her, even when she wasn’t under Damon’s control. She never really questioned her actions while under the influence, nor did anyone step up to tell her some of the things she did or thought or said were out of character for her.

Also, no one ever decided to confront Damon about “compelling” or controlling others, especially Elena.

4 Damon Abused Elena’s Best Friend

Damon’s attitude towards Caroline was one of disdain and indifference. He continuously hurt Caroline through a variety of ways (which seems to be Damon’s modus operandi through life) including meaningless hook-ups and thinking that she was just something to play with.

In less than 24 hours, Damon has bit her neck, then attacked her the next morning. Later, Damon “compelled” Caroline to wear a dress he wanted to see her in. It got worse form there.

Elena was horrified at first to find out Damon treated her friend like this.

She even called him cruel, but all was forgotten when it came time to share her feelings for him. Elena should have at least been worried about being treated the same way.

3 Elena only loved Damon after she was turned

It was established in another part of this list that Damon uses his special abilities to get people and vampires to do what he wants. With Elena, he doesn’t let their romantic relationship progress as naturally as it should.

Instead, he hurries up Elena’s love for him. In many ways, Damon knew what he was doing and who he was hurting when he turned Elena into a vampire. He was definitely aware that Elena’s emotions would be heightened, especially after the sire bond.

In truth, Elena didn’t realize she had a deep love inside her for Damon until after she became a vampire. Is it possible that if she wasn’t turned she’d still be with Stefan?

2 Everyone Is Afraid of Damon

Damon has lived a long life (about 180 years) and has befriended many, fell in love with many, and made enemies of many. No one has ever really had the gumption to stand up to him — except Elena.

Damon wasn’t the most powerful vampire, and if enough people got together, they could find a way to put Damon in his place. But the demure little human, Elena, wasn’t afraid of him and had no issues calling him out when it suited her.

Unfortunately, it seems like she never really called out the bad things he did. Her reasoning was that she saw something in him that wasn’t all evil, even when he was visibly doing evil things.

1 Damon’s Love A Problem

As this list has established, Damon has a problem keeping his anger subdued. From the first episode, continuing through season after season, Damon lashes out at the smallest provocation.

In season 3, Damon gets his neck broken when Elena visits Ester. At that point, Elena calls Damon’s love “a problem.”

It’s easy to understand why: all you have to do is go back to any scene where Damon is mean to Elena.

Elena regrets the words and tries to apologize and make excuses, but Damon ignores all that. He goes out with Rebekah. A totally appropriate response, right? Never mind the fact that Elena has already forgiven him for so many things already.

25 Behind-The-Scenes Photos Of Vampire Diaries That Change Everything

The Vampire Diaries is a show that many people were sad to see come to an end. While there were always rumors swirling around about on-set relationships and dynamics, especially involving star Nina Dobrev and her love life, it’s clear that The Vampire Diaries cast and crew are truly like a family.

When it comes down to it, it looks like behind the scenes there was nothing but love. Especially while wrapping the 8th and final season of the show, the cast really got sentimental with each other and the fans who have been along for the ride from the beginning.

We’re going to take a look at some candid moments on set, as well as off, from season 1 all the way up until the final day of filming. It may come as a surprise that multiple cast members also directed episodes in the series. Show creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec really made sure to make The Vampire Diaries a fun, collaborative experience for everyone involved.

Though The Vampire Diaries still somewhat lives on through the spinoff The Originals and Legacies, we will never quite have another show like this one. The Vampire Diaries took the CW by storm, and fans never wanted to see the day it would all end. But all good things must come to an end, and now all we can do is look back at some behind-the-scenes photos and learn a few more secrets about our favorite series.

Here are 25 Behind-The-Scenes Photos Of Vampire Diaries That Change Everything.

25 Stefan Goes Behind The Camera

While most hardcore fans are probably aware of this, many may not know that Paul Wesley did more than just star as Stefan Salvadore in The Vampire Diaries. He also directed five episodes of the series between 2014-2016.

While Wesley had always expressed an interest in directing outside of acting, it wasn’t easy at first.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, “the most daunting thing [about directing] was whether or not I could psychologically embody the feeling of a director toward the cast.” Wesley admits that he was nervous, “but when I got to set,” he said, “the cast was so supportive.”

24 Nina Snoozing In A Coffin

The Vampire Diaries cast may be full of professionals, but even the biggest stars have their on set moments. Nina Dobrev remember’s Elena’s final scene fondly, which included her actually falling asleep!

“I’m pretty sure at one point during this scene in the finale, I had fallen into such a deep sleep that I started snoring,” Dobrev tells TV Insider. “That was awkward. But everyone laughed—as family would.”

They probablyt cut Dobrev a little slack for dozing off in what looks like a pretty comfortable coffin. It was her last scene, after all!

23 Quality Time with Nina and Matt

Here we see Nina Dobrev (Elena) and Matt Davis (Alaric) getting camera ready. While The Vampire Diaries is a pretty serious show, the cast has no problem goofing off behind the scenes.

The cast always talks about the incredible bonds they formed while making this show.

Davis spoke to Entertainment Weekly about being on a show that spanned almost all of his 30s. “There are no real words that will give it justice,” Davis said, “it’s more than just a creative experience. It was more than just being on a TV show.”

22 Unimpressive Salvatore Mansion

It’s not every day that we get to see the creators behind our favorite shows. Here we have Kevin Williamson, one of the creators of The Vampire Diaries. He is standing along side Michael Travino who plays Tyler Lockwood in the series.

While it may be hard to decipher what we’re looking at without the usual smoke and mirrors – the two are standing in front of the Salvatore Mansion.

It’s not so big and spooky when you look at it from this point of view!

This photo was taken during the last season of filming, when the cast and crew were feeling nostalgic for where it all began.

21 Enemies become friends

We always love to see our favorite characters hanging out and taking time to bond on set. But what also stands out in this picture is Nina Dobrev. One of the more impressive parts of The Vampire Diaries is watching Dobrev go seamlessly between playing Elena, Katherine, and Amara.

Here we see Dobrev in full Katherine costume.

All three of these costumes, by the way, are exquisite. Dobrev admitted that costuming along with other physical parts of the character really helped her separate the three characters.

While Elena and Amara are more natural, Dobrev says Katherine is more “selfish” and “dolls up and overdoes everything.”

20 It Takes A Village To Make a Love Scene

When it comes to filming a hit show, no stone can be left unturned, and every detail must be perfect. The Vampire Diaries is no different, and here we get a glimpse into just how many people need to pay attention on set at all times.

Crew members are responsible for all kinds of duties – including making sure that every hair on Nina Dobrev’s beautiful head stays in place, or that the actors are exactly on their mark at all times. In a show full of chaos, we sometimes forget how meticulously planned every scene is. Props to the hard working crew!

19 Vampire Eyes

If you’ve ever wondered how The Vampire Diaries was able to achieve that creepy vampire eye effect – look no more. While the dots on Ian Somerhalder’s eyes may suggest simple motion capture, the reality behind the editing is far more complicated.

Mat Beck, senior visual effects supervisor, detailed the special editing process they used to make each vampire unique. “What we did was generate 3D mapping of the skin, ” Beck explains, “so whatever tweaks are done to the veins are automatically run through a module that customizes it to the facial movements of the actor.”

Confused? So are we. It’s just another intricate detail that makes this show so great!

18 Salvatore Brothers Getting Along

While filming the episode “Black Hole Sun”, the 4th episode of the final season of The Vampire Diaries, Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) admitted to messing around with each other.

While the Salvatore brothers aren’t always on best terms in the show, behind the scenes it’s another story.

Wesley remembers, “Ian and I were trying to make each other laugh between takes… it’s one of our favorite scenes with the two Salvatore brothers.”

We have to concur– seeing them laughing together is a breath of fresh air.

17 An intensely public confrontation

This behind-the-scenes photo is a great look at all the minor details that go into setting a scene.

If you look on the floor you’ll see the actor’s marks that they have to hit.

Someone even had measuring tape to the left to make sure everything is precise. The camera also appears to be on a roller, which would make sense seeing as how this scene got a bit chaotic.

This scene takes place after the decade dance in Season 1 where Elena (Nina Dorbev) learns that she has accidentally given a violent vampire an invitation into her home.

16 Getting Staked

It looks like here Anna got the short end of the stick – literally! Malese Jow who plays Anna, and Robert Pralgo, who plays Mayor Richard Lockwood, aren’t looking so hot in this photo.

In a show filled with vampires and other mystical beings, more than a few characters saw their untimely demise at the hands of someone else.

Jow’s staked chest looks pretty real thanks to the makeup and costuming department. She also doesn’t look too pleased about being offed – and neither does Pralgo!

Unfortunately no character is safe on this show.

15 In Memory Of Sarah Jones

This clapperboard is significant in a lot of ways. Not only is it from the last episode to ever be filmed of The Vampire Diaries – you can see Season 8, Episode 16 on the bottom right corner – this clapperboard is also a tribute.

On top of the board we see “For Sarah Jones, Never Forget.”

Sarah Jones was a Vampire Diaries crew member who tragically lost her life in an on-set accident while filming Greg Allman’s Midnight Rider in February of 2014. Her accident sparked a huge push to bring awareness to on-set safety, which can also be seen written on the top right of the board.

14 Sneaking A Peek At The Script

Paul Wesley may have thought he was being sneaky, but he was still one step behind show co-creator Julie Plec. Here we see Wesley trying to sneak a peak of the season finale’s script before anyone else in the cast.

Plec was quick to close her laptop and keep it all a secret.

Co-creator Kevin Williamson shared this candid moment on his Instagram page. Don’t worry fans, you are not alone in your obsession of knowing what comes next. Actors are just as curious, and if you’re Wesley, you’ll try anything to get a spoiler!

13 Slumber Party in Damon’s Room

This is another fun crew moment that Julie Plec caught and shared on her Instagram page.

This was the last scene filmed in Damon’s bedroom, and what an epic bedroom it is!

One of the great things about The Vampire Diaries is how the sets mix reality with TV magic. As you can see here, majority of the set is the real deal, but if you look out the window behind the crew, not so much.

The Vampire Diaries always truly made us feel like we were transported back in time when we stepped through the Salvatore mansion.

12 Not-So-Intimate Moment

Talk about a not-so-private kiss! It’s no secret that the intimate scenes in The Vampire Diaries are anything but intimate. In fact, kissing scenes can be down right awkward when you have to perform in front of a bunch of crew members scrutinizing your every move.

Thankfully Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder are total pros, because they really don’t seem to be phased in the slightest by the makeup artists doing her touch ups.

The only question we have is – was this before or after the couple’s real-life relationship?

11 It’s A Wrap!

What would the last day of filming be without a customized wrap cake? Whoever baked this creation left no detail behind. From miniature cast and crew members, to the Mystic Grill, and even the camaro. They even included Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec on the clapper board with the final date of filming.

We would have loved to get more of a behind-the-scenes look at the wrap party, but some things are left for the cast and crew to enjoy themselves. After 8 seasons, these guys are more like family than friends.

10 Kat Goofing Off

One of fans’ favorite character evolutions on The Vampire Diaries has always been Bonnie, played by Kat Graham. Here we see Kat fooling around on set, exuding the same fun, strong energy we came to know and love from her on the show.

When reflecting on The Vampire Diaries coming to an end, Graham admitted that Bonnie really became one with her.

“There are moments where I felt bizarre parallels between the character and my own journey” Graham told Entertainment Weekly. She described playing Bonnie as her “saving grace” through hard times.

9 Mystic Falls at Night

When a show goes on for as long as The Vampire Diaries, the cast and crew learn to love filming locations just like a second home.

Much of The Vampire Diaries was filmed in Convington, GA – known in the show as Mystic Falls.

Here we get a beautiful night shot of the town we all came to love over the years. Julie Plec, co-creator of the show alongside Kevin Willimason, posted this on her Instagram as a fond farewell to everything that made The Vampire Diaries what it was.

8 Nina Takes A Study Break

Behind the scenes photos often capture the silly moments that fans don’t normally get to see, but sometimes we get candid shots like this too. Here, Nina Dobrev, who plays Elena, is deep into her script, studying lines for the scene she’s about to shoot.

Dobrev takes her acting very seriously. When talking about her exit on the show with US Weekly, she explained why she’s ready to move on: “I don’t want to play a teenager anymore, ” Dobrev admits, “I want to play adult roles and be challenged and work with great filmmakers and tell incredible stories and that has meant being really picky.”

7 Sibling Love

This picture is from Steven McQueen’s last day on set. He played Elena’s younger brother Jeremy in the series, and everyone was definitely sad to see him go.

The cast and crew weren’t letting McQueen go without one last party.

Everyone on set dressed up as superheroes for his last day, which is where the hulk hands came from, as well as getting him a cake to celebrate. It’s clear that The Vampire Diaries gang is very close, and it’s nice to know that McQueen felt the love on his last day.

6 Kat Graham, Hard At Work

Kat Graham probably has some of the most emotional scenes throughout The Vampire Diaries. No worries here, because Graham has the acting chops to keep up with her ever struggling character.

Here we get a glimpse of what it looks like through the director’s perspective.

Graham admits that working on The Vampire Diaries gave her a new perspective as well.

“I think a lot of young girls see actresses… and they don’t really think about the breaking down of a script and what that requires and what you would need to pull it off” says Graham.

Her hard work has definitely paid off!

5 Friends For Life

When people work on a show for years together they can either become best friends or worst enemies. In the case of on-screen BFFs Elena and Bonnie – it spills over into real life too.

Nina Dobrev and Kat Graham still apparently talk and text all the time.

Phew! We’re happy to hear that.

Graham told US Weekly that she keeps in contact with many of her costars, and says that “everything reminds [her] of them.” After almost a decade together, their friendship has stood the test of distance and time.

4 The Final Script

While it wasn’t always the plan for Nina Dobrev to come back for the season finale, it ended up happening all the same. This is a rare moment where we get to see Dobrev’s final script for the entire series.

If you look closely on the bottom, you can see just how many revisions this script alone went through.

Whether or not this is the full final script we all saw in the series finale we can’t be sure, but Dobrev will forever have this picture as a memory.

3 Katherine, is that you?

If you’ve ever found yourself questioning whether Nina Dobrev is a good actor or not, need we remind you that she played not one, not two, but three characters on The Vampire Diaries?

Katherine is wildly different from Dobrev’s other characters, and it’s almost surreal to watch her turn into a selfish manipulator after having gotten used to her as Elena.

Props to Dobrev, because even though Katherine, Elena, and Amara are identical physically, they truly felt like three separate characters.

Have you ever seen such a pure smile on Katherine? That’s how we know this is Dobrev behind the scenes.

2 Kai and Damon Play Nice

Machalai Parker, aka “Kai,” who is played by Chris Wood, is seen here goofing off with Ian Somerhalder on set. You may be looking at this picture and thinking “blasphemy” but in real life it turns out Parker is kind of a big sweetheart.

If you notice the clapper, this is an episode that Somerhalder directed himself!

No wonder he has such a big grin on his face: he’s in charge this time. It’s great that The Vampire Diaries gave so many cast members the opportunity to direct their own episodes.

1 Nina and Julie

You may not all know Julie Plec, but if you’re a fan of The Vampire Diaries or The Originals, you should definitely become familiar with her.

Plec is the co-creator of the series, along with Kevin Williamson. She is a television producer and writer, and without her we likely wouldn’t have 8 seasons of this glorious TV show.

It was actually Plec who considered ending Elena’s life and surprising the audience, instead of having her return for the final season. She ended up getting talked out of it, and later admitted it was a “pretty lame” plan after all.
