Dwayne Johnson Thinks A Black Superman Will Happen Soon

Dwayne Johnson states his belief that one day cinematic comic book adaptations will see a version of Superman played by a black actor. The action star is next to be seen in The Fast and the Furious spin off Hobbs & Shaw, which features a line where Idris Elba’s villainous super soldier Brixton Lore declares himself “black Superman.”

Recent years have seen POC characters from comics begin to receive greater prominence in movie adaptations, with the likes of Black Panther and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man headlining their own movies, while the likes of Falcon, War Machine and Captain Marvel’s Maria Rambeau have played important supporting roles. It’s also worth noting that the film often seen as the first Marvel movie of the modern age, the pre-MCU Blade, has a black protagonist.

The subject came up when Johnson was interviewed by Variety at the world premiere for Hobbs & Shaw. When asked about how he believes Hollywood is handling inclusion and diversity in its superhero output, he was optimistic, stating that Marvel has done a “tremendous job.” Regarding DC, he has a more personal perspective – Johnson is of mixed race descent, with a black Nova Scotian father and a Samoan mother – from his upcoming starring role in the standalone film of Shazam villain Black Adam. A for the subject of a black Superman specifically, he finally quips, “You’re looking at him!” You can watch the whole statement below.

A precedent for a black Superman already exists in DC Comics canon, in the shape of Kryptonian refugee Val-Zod on the New 52’s version of Earth 2. After spending most of his life inside his escape capsule he developed agoraphobia, and had only started to overcome it with the help of Lois Lane’s Red Tornado when he was called upon to battle Kal-El, who had been revealed as a clone under the control of Darkseid for an invasion of Earth by the forces of Apokolips. Ultimately victorious over the mockery of his planetary brother, he subsequently took on the mantle of Superman and began reclaiming the world from the invaders.

From his inception, Superman has largely been portrayed as white, but such a skin tone is often seen as a ‘default’ with little bearing on who the character is, meaning that should an adaptation see them played by an actor of a different ethnicity, it would not alter the character’s fundamental nature. Such a change was recently seen in the DCEU’s Aquaman, where a character historically depicted as a pale blonde man was portrayed by the Hawaiian Jason Momoa. Having a black actor play Superman would certainly cause a stir and possibly an internet outcry even bigger than any other time a similar announcement has been made, such as recently regarding Halle Bailey as The Little Mermaid or Lashana Lynch in the next James Bond movie. The very purpose of Superman as a character is to embody everything that is good and admirable about humanity, something for which a pale skin tone is not specifically required, meaning that anyone with merely the right kind of presence, charisma and physicality would suit the role. Perhaps Idris Elba isn’t so short of the mark after all.

Black Adam Isn’t In Shazam – But It Still Sets Up Dwayne Johnson’s Solo Movie

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam may not make an appearance in Shazam!, but it does do an excellent job setting up the future standalone film. Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam is the newest film to come from Warner Bros. and DC Films, but it is also one of the last that will happen on the timeline laid out by their original slate. When confirmation that a Shazam movie was on the way first came though, it was expected to have one major difference from the movie that is now playing in theaters.

WB had hired Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to play Shazam supervillain Black Adam back in 2014 and it was previously envisioned that the two would face off in Shazam. This plan changed dramatically over the years of development that went into the Billy Batson origin movie, especially as Johnson continued to prove to be one of the biggest movie stars on the globe. Instead of rushing to get Shazam and Black Adam on the same screen, Johnson suggested the best decision would be to split them up and get a Black Adam solo movie in development.

Although fans were still holding out hope that Johnson would make a brief cameo in Shazam to set up their future clash (especially since he was an executive producer on the film), this does not happen in the film. The movie largely keeps the focus on Billy and Sivana’s origins, but that doesn’t mean that Shazam completely ignored the one-time Egyptian king. In fact, there’s actually a fair amount of set up done for Black Adam in just a few pivotal scenes.

  • Page 2: Black Adam’s Solo Movie Could Be A Prequel

The Previous Champion Destroyed The Council Of Wizards

When Billy Batson first enters the Rock of Eternity, he meets the last Wizard remaining from the Council of Wizards. The seven wizards are in charge of protecting all forms of magic across the world, using the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury to do so. While the Wizard (played by Djimon Hounsou) wants to pass these abilities on to Billy, he first explains why he is the last remaining wizard and being so careful to find someone pure of heart to take over.

The Wizard explains that the Council chose a predecessor in the past “recklessly” and not doing their due diligence came back to haunt them. The selected champion took advantage of these powers for his own gain and wreaked havoc across the world. He released the Seven Deadly Sins upon the world, and through their combined powers erased entire civilizations from the face of the Earth. When the Council confronted the champion about these actions, he killed every member except the wizard known as Shazam.

It is not known what happened to the champion after this, but it would appear that he was subdued in some fashion. While Shazam shows enough restraint to not actually name drop who this prior evil champion is, his evil tendencies and back story sure sound a lot like a certain Kahndaq native.

Black Adam Was The Last Champion

That’s right, all of this backstory given to the Council of Wizards was actually Shazam‘s way of establishing Black Adam in the DC universe. In the comics, Teth-Adam aka Black Adam is an Egyptian slave who has seen the dictators of the country slaughter most of his family. Adam helped save his last living nephew Aman from captivity, but Adam was severely injured during their attempted escape. The two were magically transported to the Rock of Eternity at this point, where the wizard Shazam chose Aman to be the next champion and healed Adam in the process.

Aman was tasked with freeing Kahndaq from its rulers, but the kid envisioned a world where they would not be punished for their crimes. Adam did not believe this was the rightful outcome for these men after spending years of his life being mistreated as one of their slaves. Their differences results in Adam killing his nephew and taking the powers for himself.

Page 2 of 2: Black Adam’s Solo Movie Could Be A Prequel

The DCEU’s Black Adam Movie Might Be A Prequel

Based on the information Shazam was willing to share, it appears the movie version of Black Adam has been set up to loosely resemble this origin but also give Black Adam the freedom to make some changes. The solo movie is still a work in progress at this point as there is no director attached. Adam Sztykiel was hired over a year ago to write the script, and details have slowly started to surface on what it could contain. One major theory has been that Black Adam will be a prequel film that explores his origin in depth, and this looks all the more likely after what Shazam quickly mentions.

This would be the smart move for not only Black Adam but also the larger DC universe, and even give Shazam more weight in the future. This one scene between Billy and the Wizard gives viewers a lot of important information but doesn’t have the time to truly explain everything that happened or what it all means. A prequel Black Adam film would allow for just this. The movie could make Teth-Adam a somewhat sympathetic character, but also show his tragic fall as he’s consumed by the power and his own vengeance. But, what it also has the ability to do in a prequel setting is show the creation of the Seven Deadly Sins, the destruction of the Council of Wizards, and ultimately what fate befell Black Adam.

If Black Adam does wind up being a prequel film, it would make some recent rumors about the movie even more fascinating. According to one report, Hawkman and fellow JSA members Stargirl and Atom Smasher will appear in Black Adam. While all of them are tied together through the JSA, Hawkman and Black Adam’s history dates back to centuries of old in Egypt. If they do indeed appear in Black Adam and the solo film is a prequel, we could learn that the JSA helped the last Wizard defeat Black Adam.

What Black Adam’s Origin Means For A Shazam Sequel

As exciting as Black Adam’s future (and past) in the DC universe appears to be, it will also likely mean that any confrontation with Zachary Levi’s Shazam is still a few films away. Since Black Adam is not currently ruling over Egypt in this shared universe (as far as we know), it can only be assumed that the previous Shazam – and possibly Hawkman and the JSA – were able to lock Black Adam away somewhere for the last several centuries. And, when we consider Shazam!‘s post-credits scene setting up Mister Mind and Sivana teaming up in the sequel, it would appear that there is once again no room for the ultra-power villain already.

That said, this does not mean that Shazam 2 will be completely without any references or further set up for Black Adam. Depending on what happened to Black Adam all those years ago, there’s a few different ways that a sequel could tease an eventual fight between Shazam and Black Adam. For starters, it may very well be Mr. Mind and Sivana’s plan to find Black Adam and awaken him. The sequel could show Shazam and the Shazam Family stopping them from doing so, without realizing that something happened where Black Adam could now be freed. They could even learn more about the history of the Council and Black Adam as they learn more about their magic.

But, we also don’t know that Black Adam is necessarily locked away somewhere, so the strength of a reformed Council of Wizards could potentially draw him out if he is still around. Either way, hopefully, the success of the first film will give the studios some extra incentive to move quicker on Black Adam.

Dwayne Johnson Confirms He’s Not In Fast & Furious 9

Hobbs Gives Orders in Fate of the Furious

Dwayne Johnson confirmed his character Hobbs won’t be appearing in Fast & Furious 9. The character of Hobbs has become such an important part of the series it’s easy to forget he only joined in Fast Five. That entry marked a departure in tone for the franchise, moving away from the street racing angle to becoming more like heist movies with elaborate action scenes. Hobbs was introduced as the ultimate antagonist to Dom’s (Vin Diesel) team: a federal agent who will stop at nothing to apprehend them.

Of course, he soon became an honorary member of their clan and has appeared in every installment since. Johnson had a well-publicized falling out with co-star and producer Diesel during production on The Fate Of The Furious, and it was later revealed they didn’t film any scenes together. Johnson also displayed strong chemistry with Jason Statham during the film, and it was decided the two should join forces for a spinoff that would later be titled Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. It appears Diesel may not have agreed with this plan, as he reportedly cut a post-credit scene from Fate that teased this solo movie.

Neither co-star Tyrese Gibson nor longtime franchise producer Neal H. Moritz appeared happy about Hobbs & Shaw either, with the former calling out Johnson for agreeing to it and the latter suing the studio. Now in a new conversation with MTV News, Johnson confirmed he won’t be appearing in Fast & Furious 9. That said, he does leave the door open for a return to the main series and claims Hobbs and Dom still have business to sort out.

The plan has always been for the Fast and Furious universe to grow and expand. As of now, we’re not in Fast 9 because they’re getting ready to start shooting. But who knows with Fast 10 and down the road, you never know. Because look, at the end of the day, the truth is, there’s unfinished business between Hobbs and Dom. It’s unfinished.

Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Dwayne Johnson as Hobbs in Fast and Furious 5

Given the popularity of Hobbs, it could be seen as an odd move to not have the character appear in Fast & Furious 9 at all. While Johnson sitting out the movie could purely be a result of the actor’s wildly busy schedule, there’s likely still simmering tension between Johnson and Diesel that needs to be cleared first before they work together again. The star appears open to returning in Fast & Furious 10 – which is set to end the main series – so he knows fans would like to see the Hobbs and Dom relationship resolved.

Regardless of any behind the scenes drama, the fanbase appears very excited for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. The movie is opening the door for other spinoffs in that universe too, with Diesel recently confirming a female spinoff is in the works. Fast & Furious 9 itself is due to starting filming soon for an April 2020 release date.

Hobbs & Shaw Photo: Idris Elba’s Fast & Furious Villain Revealed

Dwayne Johnson has posted the first photo of Idris Elba as the villainous Brixton in the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. The Rock has arguably become as central to the illegal street racing series-turned international juggernaut that is Fast & Furious as Vin Diesel, following his debut as Luke Hobbs from 2011’s Fast Five… and he has the box office receipts to prove it. Hence, it’s not surprising that Universal has decided to prioritize a spinoff movie that centers around Johnson’s character and pairs him opposite Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, especially after the two actors discovered they have crackling onscreen chemistry while filming last year’s Fate of the Furious.

Hobbs and Shaw officially began shooting last month, with David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2) calling the shots from a script by Fast & Furious franchise writer/producer Chris Morgan. Not much is known about the film’s actual narrative, admittedly, but it’s probably fair to assume that Elba’s character is a suave British mercenary of sorts (Is there any other kind of British mercenary in the movies?) who’s out to profit from his terrorist ways. And of course, the only ones who stand in his way are Hobbs, Shaw, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout‘s Vanessa Kirby as (reportedly) Shaw’s sister, an MI-5 agent.

Related: Vanessa Kirby’s Hobbs & Shaw Character is ‘Absolutely the Boss’

Johnson published the first photo of Elba in character for Hobbs and Shaw on his Instagram account and, in doing so, confirmed the mysterious baddie’s name. Take a look in the space below:

Hobbs and Shaw‘s Brixton will be but the latest villain role in a major franchise movie that Elba adds to his belt, to go along with his voice work as the tiger Shere Khan in Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book remake and his performance as the antagonist Krall in Star Trek Beyond. As compelling as the actor can be when he’s playing the nobler type onscreen (even an extremely flawed hero like the DCI John Luther on the TV series Luther), he generally makes for an equally charismatic and engaging threat to the good guys in his big screen appearances.

The Fast & Furious movies have stepped up their own villain game over the past five years by bringing in top-tier talent like Luke Evans, Charlize Theron and – once upon a time – even Statham to take on the franchise’s heroes. However, with Elba stepping into Brixton’s (fancy) shoes, there’s a pretty good chance that Hobbs and Shaw will end up delivering the most memorable bad guy that the series has seen to date.
