Eternals: Millie Bobby Brown Shoots Down Rumors Of Being Cast

Millie Bobby Brown has shot down speculation that she has been cast in The Eternals. Although it wasn’t her first foray into television, the teenage actress became a household name courtesy of her breakout role as the super-powered Eleven in the Netflix series Stranger Things. The third season of the nostalgia-filled science-fiction series recently dropped in its entirety on Netflix, once again drawing in record-breaking numbers. In recent years, Brown has also made the jump to the big screen, most recently starring in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Marvel, meanwhile, made its big screen return earlier this month with Spider-Man: Far From Home. The latest MCU outing is not only a standalone Spidey sequel but, directly following up Avengers: Endgame, also closes the last chapter of Phase 3. Even before the film’s equally record-breaking release, however, fans had already been looking ahead to the future of Disney’s billion-dollar franchise. Though the official slate has yet to be revealed, a number of Phase 4 films are already known to be in various stages of development, including a Black Widow prequel, Marvel’s first Asian-led film Shang-Chi, and the highly anticipated introduction to The Eternals.

One of the rumors most prominently circulating is that Brown had reportedly been cast. Live-streaming on her personal Instagram, however, Brown addressed those reports directly. Between bouts of singing the theme from The Neverending Story and discussing her range of Converse, the young actress was asked about her potential Marvel role. Here’s what she had to say in response: “OK, guys, this is the problem. Everybody thinks that I’m going to be in a Marvel movie. Not that I know of. My family and I have no idea. So, I just want to let everybody know that I’m not… as of right now.”

The Eternals will reportedly begin filming in September. With Chloé Zhao already attached as director, and a cast that looks set to include Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden as Ikaris, the film could span thousands of years, even prior to the present MCU. As such, it would present a perfect opportunity to explore Thanos’ past. The most recent word is that Salma Hayek is also in talks for a role. Disney and Marvel Studios also remain eager to bring Keanu Reeves on board, be it for this film or another.

Brown has been rumored as being attached to the MCU as far back as the simultaneous filming of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It was believed that she may turn up in a cameo or a post-credit scene setting up The Eternals. With the film eschewing the usual Marvel formula, however, it never came to be. Regardless, fans still hoped that she would ultimately join the franchise. As such, hearing her shoot down the idea will no doubt be a huge disappointment to many.

There is a chance, though, this could be another classic case of Marvel’s penchant for secrecy at work. After all, the young actress also cast doubt on the possibility of Stranger Things season 4 – despite the fact that many of the cast are officially contracted through a fourth adventure. With Marvel set to host a panel at SDCC, official details regarding their Phase 4 slate and official casting announcements – for The Eternals and beyond – may only be a short wait away, whatever the case regarding Brown herself ends up being.

Marvel’s The Eternals Has Reportedly Cast Millie Bobby Brown

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown may have secretly booked a role in Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 movie The Eternals. Now that Spider-Man: Far From Home is out in theaters, Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially over. Audiences around the world may still be checking out the latest solo outing for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, but Marvel Studios is hard at work on what will come next. That includes the first several weeks of production on Black Widow, as well as gearing up for The Eternals‘ production this fall.

The new potential franchise is based on the ancient, cosmic, and superpowered race of the same name created by Jack Kirby, with Chloe Zhao tapped to direct the movie. In the months since she was hired, Marvel has been doing a stellar job at adding recognizable names to an otherwise unknown property. Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden are currently (unofficially) set to lead the ensemble cast of The Eternals, and now it appears Eleven is joining them and recent addition Salma Hayek.

Related: MCU Theory: The Eternals Are Created By The Infinity Stones

News of Millie Bobby Brown potentially joining the cast of The Eternals comes from a recent article by Variety detailing what Marvel Studios could announce during their San Diego Comic-Con 2019 panel. Included in their rundown of the reported cast members, they included the Stranger Things star among Jolie, Madden, and Kumail Nanjiani. This piece of casting is still not confirmed, and has yet to be reiterated by another reputable source, so take this with a grain of salt for the time being.

If Brown is joining the cast of The Eternals, it’s a move that many have been waiting to see. Ever since she visited the set of Avengers: Infinity War and shared some time with Anthony and Joe Russo, fans have hoped that Brown would join the MCU sooner rather than later. While there are no details on who she could play if she’s part of The Eternals cast, we’ve long had her pegged as the perfect fit for the character of Piper.

The timing of such a potential announcement couldn’t come at a better time, as season 3 of Stranger Things received great critical acclaim and Brown’s performance there (and in Godzilla: King of the Monsters earlier this year) further proved her ability as an actress. If her deal with The Eternals goes through, then it’ll likely be the next project she does following the filming of Enola Holmes this summer. This would, of course, mean that production on season 4 of Stranger Things couldn’t begin until late 2019 at the earliest. Either way, between Stranger ThingsEnola Holmes, a role in Godzilla vs Kong, and a possible role in The Eternals, there will be no shortage of Millie Bobby Brown on the big and small screens for the next few years.

Marvel’s Eternals Movie Casts Train to Busan Actor In Undisclosed Role

Casting on The Eternals continues to heat up with Train to Busan star Ma Dong-seok joining the ensemble. Marvel Studios has seemingly had little trouble turning obscure comic book properties – like the Guardians of the Galaxy – into household names. They are hoping this can happen again with The Eternals. The upcoming Phase 4 entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is based around an ancient group of humans who were experimented on by Celestials and will be directed by The Rider‘s Chloe Zhao.

Even though many are not familiar with the story of The Eternals, interest in the property has continued to rise as the casting process began. It was previously reported that Angelina Jolie was in talks to join the cast, making her the latest A-list star to possibly join the MCU. After potentially getting Jolie on board, it was then shared that Silicon Valley‘s Kumail Nanjiani was in talks to play an unknown role too. There are still several roles that need to be filled, but Marvel appears to have found one more cast member.

Related: Theory: Hercules Could Introduce Eternals To The MCU

According to The Wrap, Ma Dong-seok has joined the cast of The Eternals in an unknown role. The South Korean star broke out in 2016’s zombie apocalypse action movie Train to Busan, where he shined as a tough but caring husband. He has spent his entire career to this point working on international films, making The Eternals his first American project.

Thanks to the amount of characters that will appear in The Eternals, there are a few roles that could fit Ma. One of the biggest such roles would be Druig, who is expected to be the main villain of the film. Ma’s intensity and presence could make him a great choice for this part. He also has a history in training mixed martial artists and has done his fair share of action roles in the past, so Ma’s could possibly even fit the mold for The Forgotten One.

There may not be any hints of who Ma will be playing, but anyone who has seen Train to Busan or any of his other work knows that he is solid selection for The Eternals. Between him, Nanjiani, and Jolie, Marvel Studios is already rounding up an impressive cast for Zhao to work with. The goal has been to assemble a diverse cast for the film as well, which may include the first openly gay Marvel character, and Marvel’s doing just that already. Hopefully this continues to be true as the casting process moves forward, but The Eternals is shaping up nicely early on.

Marvel’s The Eternals: Kumail Nanjiani in Talks to Star

Kumail Nanjiani has entered talks to star in Marvel’s The Eternals movie. Created by Jack Kirby in the mid-1970s, The Eternals comic books revolve around a race of semi-immortal and super-powered beings known as the Eternals, as well as their not-so-lovely relatives the Deviants. Marvel Studios was first rumored to be working on an Eternals film for its Marvel Cinematic Universe almost exactly a year ago, with the plan being to release the movie as part of Phase 4. The project has since gained an official pair of writers in Matthew and Ryan Firpo, as well as a director in the form of celebrated indie filmmaker Chloé Zhao (The Rider).

With Phase 3 of the MCU above to conclude with this month’s Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios intends to get production on The Eternals up and going this year, presumably to make an as-yet unannounced 2020 release date. As a result, the film’s casting process is full underway now, with Angelina Jolie having entered negotiations to play one of the movie’s leads just this past week. Now, another noteworthy actor has entered talks for a leading role in the film.

Related: Theory: Hercules Introduces the Eternals to the MCU

According to THR, Nanjiani is currently in talks to play a leading role in The Eternals. Details on his would-be role are being kept under lock and key at the moment, though the outlet states that Jolie (assuming that her deal closes) is expected to play the Eternal Sersi.

MCU films have had little trouble attracting top-tier talent in recent years, and that continues to be the case with the latest Eternals casting news. In addition to being an Oscar-nominated writer for The Big Sick (which he also starred in), Nanjiani has long been celebrated for his role on HBO’s Silicon Valley, and will star opposite Dave Bautista in this July’s already buzzed about action-comedy, Stuber. The actor is best known for his comedic offerings and will continue to play comical supporting characters in such upcoming movies as June’s Men in Black continuation, Men in Black International. At the same time, he’s started to branch out into more dramatic territory with his performance in The Twilight Zone revival episode “The Comedian”, and may continue to do so on with The Eternals.

Indeed, as famous (or infamous, your pick) as the MCU is for its humor, The Eternals should be more operatic than many of its previous offerings. The film will further break new ground by (reportedly) introducing the MCU’s first openly gay superhero, as played by a queer actor. Be that true or not, The Eternals is shaping up to be very different from anything Nanjiani’s worked on in the past, and should allow him to better showcase his range onscreen. And on top of all that, his casting is a welcome bit of inclusivity for the MCU, what with Nanjiani being the first Pakistani-American to take on a leading role in a Marvel Studios film.

Theory: Hercules Introduces The Eternals To The MCU

The Eternals could use Hercules as a way to introduce this powerful new group of superhumans into the MCU. Marvel has always loved to absorb classical legends and ancient mythology into their superhero stories; Thor was one of the founding Avengers in both the comics and in the movies, and he’s lifted straight from the ancient Norse religion. But Stan Lee and Jack Kirby also loved the Greek myths, and in the 1960s they introduced the character of Hercules.

Hercules became a recurring character in Thor, and is particularly well-known for a guest appearance in Tales to Astonish #79, where the so-called Prince of Power took on the Hulk. Over the years, Hercules has been a major recurring character, star of his own popular comic book runs, and a member of several iterations of the Avengers. And now, he could be making his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rumors are swirling that Hercules will finally make his MCU debut in The Eternals.

Related: Every MCU Movie Coming After Captain Marvel

The rumors started last November, when casting breakdown included mention of an unnamed “Greek God” character. Since then, they’ve only built up, although the latest rumor suggests Marvel may deviate from the comics and pivot towards a more historically-accurate version of Hercules. There have been reports that Marvel is looking to cast their first openly gay lead, and this has been tied to Hercules. It makes sense; in the Greek myths, Hercules was pansexual, and took his male aide Hylas as his lover. Curiously, though, in the comics Hercules has never been too closely-tied to the Eternals. So why would Marvel choose to introduce him in this film?

The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby in 1976. He drew loosely upon Greek legends for his inspiration, with one of the Eternal cities named Olympia and some of their names lifted from mythology – including Zuras, leader of the Eternals, named after Zeus. Kirby had originally intended the Eternals to be largely outside of the wider Marvel Comics continuity, but over the years that changed, and they’ve become a constant – albeit background – presence in the comics, most notable for teaming up with Thor in “The Celestial Saga.” Unfortunately, this caused something of a problem for Marvel, because there were obvious and explicit connections between the Eternals and the Greek myths, and yet Marvel already had their Greek Pantheon, a race referred to as the Olympians who were equivalent to the Thor’s Asgardians. Marvel simply accepted the similarities, with one Eternal – Virako – describing them as a mystery the Eternals had “never had time nor desire to investigate.” Naturally, these being superhero comics, it was only a matter of time before the Eternals and the Olympians went head-to-head, but the connections were never resolved.

The MCU, of course, has taken a different approach to the comics when it comes to the Pantheons. In the comics, the Asgardians and the Olympians really are gods, in part powered by the belief of others. In the MCU, however, the Asgardians are essentially powerful and long-lived aliens who originate from another of the Nine Realms. They have made their presence known on Earth over the millennia, and were worshiped as gods by Norse society. It’s reasonable to assume that other Pantheons could have similarly been alien races who interacted with humanity in the past. Indeed, referencing The Eternals, Kevin Feige has suggested he quite likes the idea. If Hercules does indeed appear in The Eternals, it suggests that Marvel could be simplifying the relationship between the Eternals and the legends of ancient Greece. Rather than follow the comics, with confusingly similar Eternals and Olympians, the MCU could merge the two. Thus, in the MCU, the Eternals would be the basis for the Greek legends.

Page 2 of 2: Hercules’ Role In The Eternals and the MCU

Further, this raises the possibility that Hercules could be used to introduce the Eternals into the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, the Eternals have always been a secretive, reclusive race, reluctant to be drawn into the affairs of man. Indeed, there’s a sense in which that was part of Jack Kirby’s core concept; it simply has to be, because unlike the Asgardians, the Eternals still live on Earth. Humanity is sharing the globe with another evolutionary offshoot, one that has been careful to ensure we don’t know it. The Eternals who live among humans, such as Sersi, hide themselves as much as possible and assume lives of privilege and wealth.

If the Eternals are to be a major player in the future of the MCU, then Marvel need to add a character into the mix to become their public face, someone who isn’t quite so reserved. Hercules is the perfect candidate; in the comics, the Prince of Power simply wants to be loved and adored. He struts around on a global stage, proudly demonstrating his might, sometimes seeking out fights just so he can make the world realize how powerful he truly is. If the MCU’s version of Hercules is an Eternal, he’ll be one who doesn’t want to hide in the shadows but rather who desires to step out into the light. Presumably some sort of crisis will take place that allows him to do just that; and Hercules would revel in it. Where the rest of the Eternals would retreat, he’d embrace the fame that comes from being seen by the world as a superhero.

This theory suggests that The Eternals serves a double purpose within the MCU. Firstly, it adds another layer of depth and complexity into the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an evolutionary offshoot of humanity who share our own world. Like Wakanda, the Eternals are citizens of a Hidden Kingdom, a window into the potential of the human race. Secondly, though, it also introduces Hercules, a character who has the potential to serve as a loose Thor analogue going forward. Marvel is carefully establishing the next wave of superheroes for the MCU – characters like Black Panther and Captain Marvel – and Hercules would surely number among them.

The parallels between Thor and Hercules could conceivably hint at just how important The Eternals could be to the future of the MCU. Thor and the Asgardians have been an essential part of the first three phases of the MCU, which Marvel call “The Infinity Saga.” Loki’s arrival on Earth was the very reason the Avengers were founded in the first place, and two of the Infinity Stones have been tied to Asgard. It’s possible that The Eternals will be just as important to the next saga; in the comics, the Celestials who created them were destined to return to Earth in order to judge humanity. They’ve been a constant, recurring presence – more so than the Eternals themselves. Just as Thor was central to Marvel’s Infinity Saga, perhaps Hercules will prove to be a key player in everything that’s set to come, a figure who helps Earth’s heroes deal with the cosmic judgment of the Celestials.

Marvel’s The Eternals: What Angelina Jolie Could Look Like As Sersi

New fan art for Marvel’s The Eternals movie imagines what Angelina Jolie would look like as Sersi. Earlier this week, it was reported that Jolie is in talks to star in The Eternals, though the details of her role is currently unknown. If the news is true, it would be Jolie’s first role in a superhero movie.

With Marvel’s current slate of films wrapping up this year with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far from Home, Marvel and Disney are looking to the future with three new franchises: Black Widow, The Eternals, and Shang-Chi. Directed by Chloe Zhao and written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals is expected to send viewers back thousands of years into the past and could end up serving as a prequel to the MCU.

Fan artist BossLogic has posted new art on Twitter which features Jolie as Sersi, a key member of the Eternals and the character that many believe Jolie would play. Rumors have indicated that the film will revolve around a love story between Ikaris and Sersi, who is described as an Eternal “who relishes moving among humans,” which doesn’t sound far from the character’s comic book counterpart. Check out the art below.

In the comics, Sersi is portrayed as a fun-loving Eternal who enjoys partying and interacting with humans. In this aspect, Sersi is different from the rest of her people, who usually avoid contact with mortals and interfering in the affairs of humans. It’s for this reason that Sersi is more visible in the superhero community than her fellow Earth-based Eternals. During the early 1990s, Sersi was an important member of the Avengers who fought alongside them in some of their biggest stories, including “Operation: Galactic Storm” and “The Crossing.”

Sersi is easily one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes. During her days an Avenger, she was often compared with Jean Grey when it came to her potential for destruction. Sersi possesses the ability to rearrange matter on a grand scale.

Though some may that Sersi should be played by a younger actress, it wouldn’t be the first time that a key character’s appearance was adjusted for a movie. It’s also possible that Jolie won’t be playing Sersi, and is being eyed for a completely different character. In The Eternals comics, Thena is just as important as Sersi. Thena is the headstrong daughter of Zuras (the patriarch of the Eternals) and the exact opposite of Sersi, in terms of how she treats humans. In any case, it will be interesting to see what happens as the casting process for The Eternals moves forward and more details begin to emerge.

Angelina Jolie in Talks for MCU Phase 4 Movie The Eternals

Angelina Jolie may be heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to star in The Eternals. Even though Marvel Studios is just weeks away from launching Avengers: Endgame and ending Phase 3 as a result, Phase 4 of the MCU is already taking shape. We’ve known for some time that Spider-Man: Far From Home will help usher in the next wave, but the studio has also been developing several new properties to introduce: including The Eternals.

Based on the Jack Kirby comics, The Eternals is reportedly going to be a story that could span thousands of years in the MCU. The film is going to be directed by Chloe Zhao, who previously was in consideration to direct fellow Marvel flick Black Widow. She’s been attached to the project since last year, and the film has continued to slowly make progress ever since. Character breakdowns surfaced last year as well that helped give an idea of what characters will be featured in the movie, and now we may know who’ll be the first star.

Related: Casting Marvel’s The Eternals Movie

According to THR, Angelina Jolie is in talks to star in The Eternals. There are no details on her role at this time, but the Oscar-winning actress would be a huge start for the ensemble cast regardless. This will be Jolie’s first comic book movie, and her decision to jump aboard the MCU comes after recently working with Disney again on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Jolie’s career has taken many turns over the years, so she’s done everything from being the romantic interest, to becoming an action star, and taking true dramatic turns in front of the camera. Jolie has also focused more on directing and producing in recent years too, but this will not be one of those instances. Marvel’s ability to get Jolie involved with the MCU is a huge get on its own, yet her star power should be a major help to generate interest for a lesser known property like The Eternals.

The biggest question that her casting leaves us with is obviously what role she’ll play. There are four female characters from the aforementioned breakdowns, but only three that Jolie is likely in line for: Sersi, Thena, and Elysius. Sersi is traditionally one of the lead characters in Eternals comics, and Jolie being the first cast member to possibly join does help make this role seem like the right choice. However, such a role would possibly keep Jolie around for multiple films that could require much of her time. Roles like Thena or Elysius could be smaller parts that still allow for longevity, so if Jolie is looking to join the MCU but still have a flexible schedule, these would make more sense.

No matter what role she ends up taking, Jolie’s resumé speaks for itself and would make her a great start to The Eternals‘ cast. Marvel is reportedly also looking to cast their first openly gay male lead for the film, and with the amount of characters that’ll be featured, Jolie is just the first of many new MCU additions. All will be decided in the coming months too, as The Eternals will start filming this fall, as it’s expected to hit theaters in late-2020.

Marvel’s Eternals Movie Could Span ‘Thousands of Years,’ Says Kevin Feige

Marvel president and producer Kevin Feige has outlined a little of what fans can expect from the upcoming Phase 4 films, specifically the much-whispered-about The Eternals. At a press day for Captain Marvel, he spoke about the studio’s plans for the MCU post-Avengers: Endgame and addressed how they would deal with both pre-existing characters and how they hoped to bring in new ones – depending on who survives the snap and everything else to come, that is.

Given that the next Avengers film will be a culmination of the 21 movies that have come before it, the idea of starting over after the fact is difficult to comprehend. But the studio has been plotting this out since screenwriters Matthew and Ryan Firpo were attached to The Eternals project in May 2018, and details got locked down along with Chloé Zhao as director in September. But when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was established over a decade ago, the films slowly introduced heroes one by one before gathering them together four years later in The Avengers. This time around, things will be done a little differently.

Related: Marvel’s The Eternals Movie Reportedly Starts Filming In August

In an interview with Collider, Feige explained that while they would certainly bring back old characters in the next slew of films, “we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers.” Introducing an entire group in one go has already been done in the MCU, and Guardians of the Galaxy proved that it could be a success, but don’t expect the scope of this new group to be quite the same. Unlike the fun-loving crew led by Chris Pratt’s Star Lord, The Eternals may be biting off a much larger piece of Marvel history. “Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done,” Feige said. “Which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

Jack Kirby was indeed the genius behind the Eternals as characters, having thought them up back in 1976 when he introduced a time millions of years ago in which the Celestials created the eponymous superhumans as well as their darker counterparts, the Deviants. While the Eternals will be the first group unveiled to the world at large in Phase 4, they may not be the only one. For now, other previously announced Phase 4 plans include Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Widow, Doctor Strange 2, and Black Panther 2.

Going from the origins of these nearly immortal beings to their feats in the present sounds like a Herculean task, but director Chloé Zhao has proven adept at capturing the heart of an epic with films like The Rider under her belt. And Feige appeared confident in following the groundwork laid out by Kirby, whose influence has already had a marked effect on at least the visuals of previous Marvel blockbusters such as Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok.

Some fans may be nervous at the thought of adding even more characters and competing histories, but the use of different time periods allows for an exciting way in. After all, Captain America: The First Avenger firmly established Steve Rogers in the World War II era before uprooting him to the present – and it made great use of both. How Captain Marvel handles the time jump has yet to be seen, but it’ll provide some hints as to how the studio will handle a story that spans many more years and perhaps dimensions than ever before.
