10 Most Important Scenes For Thor’s MCU Journey

The MCU has a set of characters known unofficially as the Big Three. Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. While the first two have always had a pretty solid, well-constructed character arc, the God of Thunder underwent a few…technical difficulties. He was nobody’s favorite Avenger in the beginning, and Thor: The Dark World is regarded as one of the worst MCU movies.

Nevertheless, Ragnarok and Infinity War managed to give us another view of the Asgardian. Now, there is no doubt that Thor is definitely many people’s favorite Avenger. He has made many appearances and has had many critical scenes as he transformed from a greedy, reckless prince, to a wise, heroic king. With that said, here are the 10 most important scenes for Thor’s MCU journey.

10 Life-Changing Banishment

By now, the world is so used to seeing the heroic, humble Thor that it’s easy to forget his dim-witted past self. His first major step towards his MCU future began amidst his disobedience towards Odin as a result of his attack on the Frost Giants and the breaking of the centuries-old peace treaty between Jotunheim and Asgard. Odin rescues him and his allies from the frozen planet and brings him back to Asgard where a screaming match ensues between father and son.

The all-father calls his son a “vain, greedy, cruel boy”, who replies with “you are an old man and a fool!”. Odin decides to punish his future heir to the throne, by… banishing him from the planet and stripping away his powers. It was this banishment that led him to Earth, to S.H.I.E.L.D, to the Avengers, and to become worthy. It was essentially Thor’s version of Tony Stark’s “captured by terrorists in Afghanistan” phase.

9 Worthy at last

After spending an entire movie trapped in New Mexico with no powers and no ability to wield his trusty Mjolnir, Thor is confronted by the Destroyer, Asgard’s giant deadly sentient suit of armor, controlled by Loki. At that moment, he finally proves his worth by sacrificing his life for his friends, as he encourages his brother to kill him instead of them.

Unfortunately, Loki does just that as the God of Thunder is put into an apparently lifeless form after he’s attacked by the Destroyer. However, by proving his worth, he managed to summon his mighty hammer, at last, retaining his life and his powers. This was the exact moment he became the hero we now know. From that point on, his worthiness has never been at stake.

8 The death of Phil Coulson

Yes, everyone knows Coulson’s death was so real that he’s spent the last five years leading a team of S.H.I.E.L.D agents all over the world. That is not an issue when it comes to The Avengers. Not only do the heroes not know of his survival, but his “death” was what first gave meaning to the word “Avengers”. However, only one of them actually witnessed him go down and only one was directly related to the killer. Both of these are Thor.

Loki had just trapped his brother in the unbreakable cage when Coulson stepped in to save him. But he’s known as the trickster god for a reason. While Coulson aimed at Loki, the real Loki sneaked up behind and stabbed him, right in front of Thor’s helpless view. This act is what ultimately led Thor to the Battle of New York, where he officially became an Avenger.

7 Foreshadowing 101

Some of Age of Ultron‘s most interesting scenes were the heroes’ nightmarish visions, given to them by Wanda’s mind-meddling powers. Unfortunately for the Avengers, recent MCU movies have proven that these were more than mere dreams. This is especially true with Thor. Coincidence or not, the son of Odin experiences a strange encounter with a creepy-looking Heimdall, who says the following: “I see you leading us to Hell […] We are all dead, can you not see”.

Thor then gets a split-second glimpse of the Infinity Stones and of a red-faced, Paul Bettany-looking image. A vision of Vision. Sure enough, future MCU events saw the Avengers create the heroic Android, Hela invading Asgard, and Thanos killing half of all Asgardians (three-quarters if you include the snap). Unfortunately for him, everything he saw came to a real-life tragic conclusion.

6 Loss, death, and destruction

Thor: Ragnarok saw a major shift in tone to the hero’s previous standalone outings, by turning a Shakespearean, brooding franchise, into a colorful, laugh-out-loud comedy. Nevertheless, there was still room for a lot of character development. One scene, in particular, turns Thor’s world upside down in a matter of minutes. With Doctor Strange’s help, the Asgardian brothers manage to find Odin. Much to their dismay, they don’t spend a lot of time with their century-old father, as he finally dies.

Right before his death, he had warned his sons that his presence had kept a previously unknown evil daughter away. Sure enough, not a minute later, the Goddess of Death herself arrives and immediately destroys Thor’s “irreplaceable” hammer. And right after that, Thor and Loki are knocked out the Bifrost mid-travel and end up in Sakaar, where Thor encounters his avenging friend, Bruce Banner. That is a lot to process in just a few minutes.

5 Not the God of Hammers

Audiences were shocked when Hela effortlessly crushed Mjornir with her bare hands. Until that moment, it seemed as if both man and hammer were inseparable. But just because he lacks a flying mallet, doesn’t mean he stops bearing the title of  “God of Thunder”. The third act of Ragnarok sees Hela unleash her wrath on Asgard. A short fight between brother and sister sees Thor be bested by the Goddess of Death, at which point he slips into a dream of sorts and meets his dead father.

He proceeds to give him the advice that allowed him to prove his full potential and become the strongest Avenger (sorry Hulk). “Are you Thor, the God of Hammers?”, Odin asks. Thor wakes up, his body overloaded by lightning. He then throws Hela aside, and charges into her army as Led Zepplin blares in the background.

4 Homeless planet

Thor: Ragnarok‘s ending is particularly bittersweet. While the heroes manage to defeat Hela and save the Asgardian race, Thor is forced to summon Surtur to bring about the complete and utter destruction of his beloved homeworld, until nothing but dust remains. Besides all of this, the most important piece added to Thor’s ongoing story is something that had been teased since the very beginning of his first solo movie.

After Odin’s long-enduring reign, and a brief period where Loki poses as his father, the rightful heir to the throne finally becomes king of Asgard. Because, as Heimdall reminds him, “Asgard is not a place, it’s a people”. It’s best then not to think about what happened during his very first day as leader…

3 Attack on the Statesman

Thor has one of the most tragic stories out of all the MCU heroes. Loss is synonymous with him. As he evolves throughout the years, he also keeps losing family and friends. By the end of Ragnarok, he had lost his mother, father, Asgardian friends, hammer, right eye, and his home. Apparently, that was not enough for the mighty God, as shown by the sudden appearance of Thanos’ ship.

Infinity War starts with half the Asgardian people having been slain by the Mad Titan. Not long after, we see Thor watching helplessly as both his best friend and his brother are killed by Thanos, before the God of Thunder himself is left alone, crying on Loki’s corpse, as the Asgardian ship starts to crumble all around him.

2 Stormbreaker

We just wrote two entire paragraphs on the fact that Thor’s hammer wasn’t the source of his power, he just had to realize that to tap into his full potential. Then again, his full potential was never proven to be his full potential. Infinity War confirms this theory, as Thanos easily overpowers Thor in Infinity War’s opening scene. As powerful as he is, he did not expect to have to face an Infinity Stone-wielding titan so soon.

He clearly needs an extra boost for round two. He then travels to Nidevallir, the birthplace of Mjolnir, where he encounters Eitri, the only surviving member of the dwarf race, ever since Thanos wiped out the rest of the population after building him the Infinity Gauntlet. The dwarf builds Thor a weapon of the “Thanos-killing” kind. A Bifrost-summoning, Groot-handled axe. Stormbreaker.

1 He should have gone for the head

As Endgame approaches, we keep reminding ourselves of where we last left our heroes in the latest Avengers movie. Pretty much everyone was last seen in a state of great pain. However, besides maybe Tony Stark, Thor’s Infinity War journey ended the worst. Upon the destruction of the Mind Stone, Thanos’ mission appeared to have come to a fortunate end. Then he used the Time Stone to retrieve the stone, and all hope seemed lost.

But the God of Thunder arrived in the nick of time and thrust his super-axe through Thanos’ chest. The universe was saved and vengeance was served, thought Thor as he verbally provoked Thanos. Unfortunately, he didn’t go for the head, and a Stone-filled Gauntlet snapped, killing half the universe. This will have undoubtedly caused the hero to suffer from a serious case of survivor’s guilt. Here’s hoping he still has some willpower left to try and redeem himself.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 Ended Revan’s Journey With Ancient Sith Lords

Obsidian’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 would have featured the culmination of Revan’s journey, which included standing face-to-face with ancient Sith Lords of unimaginable power. Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most popular Star Wars video game franchises of all-time, a statement that only becomes confusing once fans realize it has gone ignored for over a decade at this point with little indication there will ever be a return to the series.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 was reportedly planned, at least up until the pitch stage, but never materialized beyond that. There’s never really been a clear reason for why the game series, which was successful in both its iterations despite being developed by two different studios in BioWare and Obsidian, has never gotten another crack at mainstream video game success. Single-player games are in high demand at the moment, with many companies, including EA, scrambling to backpedal after a prioritization of multiplayer content and microtransactions soured fans on the Star Wars franchise.

According to ex-Obsidian writer Chris Avellone, the studio was prepared with a fleshed-out Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 pitch that never ended up going anywhere. Luckily for fans, Avellone remembers most of what the pitch entailed, and shared it in an interview with VG24/7. According to Avellone, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 contained foreshadowing for what Darth Revan was doing adjacent to that game’s story, and would set up the larger plan of a confrontation against never-before-seen enemies:

The third game involved you, as a player character, following where Revan went and then taking the battle to the really ancient Sith lords who are far more terrifying than the Darths that show up. These guys would just be monsters…you’d see how horrible that was. Part of that environment would tell a story about that. [That] would be a great, epic way to end the trilogy. The Old Republic are out there. We just didn’t get a chance to do it.”

While the ancient Sith would be initially mysterious, Avellone indicated that they wouldn’t be quite as mysterious as Snoke in the new trilogy of films. The ancient Sith would have backstories that players could explore and uncover, giving fans greater insight into what these entities meant to the greater Star Wars universe as a whole. Unfortunately, the writer believes the pitches never worked because of several studios competing for it at once during a time when multiplayer gaming had become a bigger priority for studios.

It’s interesting to discuss Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 because we’re just months away from the release of a new single-player Star Wars adventure in Jedi: Fallen Order. If that game is successful, there’s every chance EA might be interested in using its Star Wars license to produce more single-player adventures, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 will surely be near the top of a very short list of potential ready-made resurrections within the franchise. A fan can dream, right?

20 Things Wrong With American Horror Story We All Choose To Ignore

The horror anthology hit TV show American Horror Story just might be the magnum opus of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck. Scarier and more riveting than any of the duo’s other projects, the spine-tingling series features a new theme and characters every season that are all still linked to each other’s universe. From the casting announcements to the series hints, theme reveals, and each season’s unique introductory visuals, it’s riveting entertainment all around. Even so, some seasons fall further off the mark than others, with many episodes barely even registering on the “horror” radar while others left us scratching our heads wondering what the heck just happened.

The thing is, we tend to give glaring errors, plot flops, and other things wrong with the show a pass because we love it so much. From intriguing horror to irresistible characters, from unexpected plot twists to some of the best storytelling on TV, American Horror Story keeps us coming back, not because it’s flawless but because it’s still addictive despite, and sometimes because of, its many flaws.

We might love a character and conveniently forget that he or she is a monster. We’ll keep tuning in even after an entire sequence left us feeling disgusted, embarrassed for the actress who had to play out the scene, or even angry at the creators themselves. It’s just that addictive.

We love it and we’ll keep coming back for me, even with these 20 Things Wrong With American Horror Story We All Choose To Ignore.

20 Some Seasons Aren’t Scary

With a name like American Horror Story, you might expect every episode to be a scream-fest. That’s just not the case, especially in seasons four and five. While there’s no shortage of horror-inducing characters in these seasons, they didn’t really give us nightmares like previous and subsequent seasons were able to do.

Were we jaded from all the mutants, ghosts, zombies, and other creatures in previous seasons?

Both Freak Show and Hotel fell short on promises of terror, often vying for more intense drama (a calling card of Falchuck and Murphy) instead. While we still received interesting stories, Gaga’s vampire and Twisty the Clown just weren’t all that scary.

19 There’s No Reason Given For All The Hotel Vampire Kids

In season five, Hotel, Lady Gaga’s character, The Countess Elizabeth, is a little less fabulous than we expected her to be. Perhaps she couldn’t live up to the Gaga we all know and love already. One of the things that just made zero sense about the character was her propensity to collect children and turn them into little vampires. Does Elizabeth have an old woman in the shoe complex? Is she just that bored? What is the point?

Here’s the thing about kids in horror movies: they add instant scare-factor. Take a look at most scary film kids, from Village of the Damned to The Others and you’ll see the scariest moments. The fact that the vampire kid collection wasn’t even scary was a pretty big letdown.

18 Teeth Fall From The Sky For No Reason

Season six of AHS, Roanoke, was able to recover some of the lost ground from the previous two less-scary seasons but still suffered from the lack of the one and only Jessica Lang. The season saw a return to the haunted house theme, always popular in AHS history, and wove in some new elements, like the whole “based on a true story” theme.  Between Deliverance-like hillbillies and more incredible Kathy Bates, Roanake was much better-received than Hotel, but it had some weird unexplained moments, like teeth randomly falling from the sky.

Not only do the teeth inexplicably fall while Matt is at work, but they also disappear.

The reason why is never given, prompting us to chalk this one up to “random scare tactic.”

17 Queenie Tried To Hook Up With A Minotaur

While we definitely applaud Murphy and Falchuck’s use of mythology throughout American Horror Story, it often makes no sense. Gabourey Sidibe was fantastic as Queenie, the young and lonely witch who gave as well as she got, used LaLaurie as her own personal racist slave, and really deserved main credits billing. But there was that one time she tried to hook up with a grotesque Minotaur…

While the inclusion of adult content is pretty standard in AHS, getting involved with a man who has bull’s head sewed over his own is pretty far out there. It didn’t make any sense, nor did Queenie’s own survival following the incident (or anything else including the Minotaur, really), so we just move along and say that there’s nothing to see here.

16 Zoe’s Hell Is Just Life Without Kyle

Zoe Benson, portrayed by Taissa Farmiga, starts out as a compelling character in the third season of American Horror Story, Coven. She has unique powers that pay homage to classic horror and a long journey ahead.

Tossing in a love interest is a great way to derail a personal growth story.

That’s what happened to Zoe with Kyle, her resurrected boyfriend played by Evan Peters. While we’re glad that Murphy and Falchuck used Kyle to illustrate that mothers can be abusive to their sons just as much as fathers can, “life without Kyle” as Zoe’s own personal hell is really stupid and overly angst-ridden.

15 Aliens In Asylum Makes No Sense

When it comes to American Horror Story, many fans reacted to the inclusion of aliens in season two, Asylum, in the same way that fans of Indiana Jones reacted to the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For many horror fans, aliens don’t enter the territory without very specific rules, and you certainly don’t add aliens into an already-existing story for a scare factor.

The aliens of AHS also just weren’t scary. Sure, they made Pepper more interesting and gave convenient explanations for a few weird happenings, but at the end of the day mixing aliens in with mutants, a mean nun, demons, and war criminals just doesn’t work. It’s a hodgepodge of plot devices tossed together like a salad with too many kinds of dressing. Sometimes simpler is just better.

14 The Musical Sequences

We get that Sister Jude is losing her mind in this tenth episode of season two, Asylum, but must we lose ours as well? The episode itself was gripping, but watching Jessica Lange sashay through “The Name Game” wasn’t nearly as eerie as it should have been. It played off as more of an homage to the creators’ Glee in a way that didn’t work.

While some critics enjoyed the mind-boggling number, many of us like to pretend it never happened.

It’s not the last time the showrunners implemented a bit of music and dance, either. Season four, Freak Show, featured several ditties, including a rendition of “Come As You Are” by Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson’s “Dream a Little Dream of Me”, and Lange singing David Bowie’s “Life on Mars”.

13 What Happens To Dr. Arden’s Experiments?

The mutants created in Dr. Arden’s horrific experiments are the stuff of nightmares, and they definitely present an interesting side story among the rest of the godawful happenings at Briarwood Manor in season two of American Horror Story, Asylum. Their issue, of course, is that they disappear off the radar without much of a peep.

Once turned into a mutant and taken to a hospital, Shelley, played by Chloë Sevigny as a homage to the many women unjustly committed to asylums throughout history, seems as if she may be able to lead the authorities toward Arden, but alas, Joseph Fiennes’ conflicted yet greedy Monsignor Timothy Howard takes her out instead. We don’t hear much about them afterward. What happened to the mutants?

12 The Messed-Up Historical Figures

Anne Frank was lobotomized by the evil Dr. Arden from Briarcliff Manor in season two, Asylum. Not only does this make zero sense, but it also really does a disservice to Anne Frank’s memory. There is a lot of artistic license taken with historical figures throughout American Horror Story, from Delphine Lalaurie to James March. Even characters used as backgrounds for new characters, like Nellie Bly’s inspiration for Lana Winters, often seems a bit much, especially when the representation is so loose.

The misrepresentation or grand re-representation of historical figures is nothing new.

Our own history books present complete falsehoods about everyone from Christopher Columbus to Paul Revere. Perhaps it’s just so glaring because we acknowledge that now, particularly during an age of “fake news” awareness.

11 The Opening Sequence And Spoilers Promise More Than We Get

One of the most exciting elements of a new season of American Horror Story is always the opening sequence and the slowly-revealed spoilers. Cast announcements and cool visuals trickle in until we finally get to see that first episode with its incredible casting graphics. The creepy opening sequence does much more than announce the cast: it revs us up like the announcer for a really scary joust about to take place.

The only problem is that it often goes downhill from there. While season 1 typically delivered, the casting graphics in seasons like Freak Show were actually scarier than the episodes themselves. That’s a real problem if we are supposed to be watching a horror program.

10 We Have No Idea What Happened To The Pig Boys

They were a successful execution of “the scary children” in a way that the little vampire entourage of the previous season just couldn’t seem to manage, so maybe that’s why Murphy and Falchuck decided to never let the “pig boys” of season six be seen again.

Aside from the fact that the boys could have made for some truly scary storytelling, the problem here isn’t just that they had no deeper involvement in the story than “check out these creepy kids” but that they don’t even have a resolution. Why the kids say, “Croatoan!” and why they drink pig milk remains unknown, and we may never know what happened to the charming little tykes.

9 No Consequences for the bad things the “good guys” do

As fans of American Horror Story, we sure do forgive a lot of murderers, don’t we? When someone bad finally goes good, all of their wicked deeds don’t seem to be as problematic. Even sweet Nan takes out Joan. Misty Day, otherwise a kind hippie, offs a couple of guys with alligators.

Were these warranted attacks? Maybe, but that doesn’t erase the fact that many characters end the lives of others and we pretty much turn a blind eye toward it like we wouldn’t if they occurred in real life. Of course, from people returning from the grave to mutant attacks near an asylum, there’s really not a lot in the show that applies to real life.

8 There’s Really No War Between The Coven And The Voodoo Witches

During season three, Coven, there’s a big build up about an oncoming war between the coven and the voodoo witches of the area. Both are led by powerful women, and who wasn’t excited to see Fiona, played by Jessica Lange, and Marie Laveau, played by Angela Bassett, go up against one another?

While there was plenty of tension and a zombie attack, it pretty much stopped there, especially after the witch hunters came to town.

AHS often builds up to something we’re expecting and completely abandon it for another plot instead. While we get that they want to keep us on our toes, broken promises do leave us unsatisfied and underwhelmed.

7 Zoe And Madison Gave Their Souls To Azaezel And It Never Came Up Again

When the bus full of frat boys who assaulted Madison wrecks, taking out all of the monsters on board on Madison’s whim, it’s satisfying. Even seeing Kyle taken out doesn’t bother some of us, given that we’ve already seen Evan Peters return from the grave before and wouldn’t be surprised if he returned. He may have stopped his “brothers” but he certainly tried to help them not get caught, making him complicit in the attack.

When Zoe and Madison decide to put “boy parts” together to resurrect Kyle as the perfect Frankenstein boyfriend, they sell their souls to Azaezel in order to do so, and yet it never comes up again. Given that both girls bite the dust during the show, shouldn’t that at least be an issue?

6 Roanoke’s Reality Show Inception

It was one of the most pointless plot points to ever be inserted into a season of American Horror Story. During season six, Roanoke, we’re treated to a reality show type of setting where re-enactors help us understand what happened to the Millers in “My Roanoke Nightmare”, an obvious play on so many other popular reality-based ghost hunting and experience shows. That’s an intriguing concept that works well for much of the season, but then we’re hit with reality-ception.

Getting all of the actors and people involved in actual events together for the blood moon event is one thing, but what about the disclaimer that nobody even survived the ordeal? If that’s true (which makes sense, since this is Roanoke), how did we get the footage in the first place?

5 There’s No Point To Scathach

Scathach, the mythical warrior from the Isle of Skye in Irish folklore, is an incredible character. It’s too bad we didn’t really get to know her in season six, Roanoke.

Lady Gaga’s Scathnach has a plethora of powers, is said to be the first Supreme and yet has no real point in the series.

The witch does a few nefarious things here and there, from purchasing souls to rendering people evil and insane, but in the grand scheme of things she has no real point except to serve as one of those random elements of horror woven in to just be spooky. Given the history of the traditional character, it would be amazing to see Murphy and Falchuck to use this as a tie-in for a more myth-heavy season.

4 People Are Constantly Offed Only To Be Brought Back

Character losses in the American Horror Story realm are pretty much like those in any comic book series: you don’t ever count them as permanent. Even when an entire series ends and you believe a character to be truly gone, they may return in another season! It’s definitely not a new tactic to have characters return from the grave; it’s a strategy used in everything from Dallas to Supernatural.

It makes us feel a little more jaded and a little less invested when tragedy does strike.

Oh, Fiona is sick? Oh, Ethel’s not going to make it? It’s too often meaningless. We want to feel affected, and we can’t help but worry a bit because we do love these characters, but deep down we’re always still wondering when they’ll return.

3 Twisty’s “Resolution” Is Basically A Deus Ex Machina

Season four’s big villain, Twisty the Clown, turned out to be much more Bozo than Pennywise. Sure, he was scary-looking, and he had the tragic backstory to boot, but Twisty’s crimes felt more garden variety scary movie than the monstrous panache we’d expect from AHS.

Twisty, played by John Carroll Lynch, even had a disappointing resolution as a character. Not only was he never really sorted out by a main character or a victim bent on revenge, but he was literally yanked out of the show to join Edward Mordrake’s nightmarish troupe, collecting the clown’s soul after hearing his tale of woe.

2 Misty Day Was Unjustly Lost

One of the characters fans most resonated with in season three, Coven, was Misty Day, played by the talented Lily Rabe. Misty’s character screamed Supreme, from her unique abilities to her lack of really caring about the position.

Misty was all about fairness, being kind to animals, and protecting the vulnerable, making her a fantastic character to root for.

Unfortunately she was also a red herring. Falchuck and Murphy offed her in such a terrible way in a Hell made up of her own personal vivisection nightmare, which made zero sense given her ability to bring things back to life so easily. Misty didn’t deserve her ending, but neither did Nan and many other characters.

1 Tate Is A School Shooter

Tate Langdon is one of the most romanticized characters in the history of AHS. The season 1 character is a doting friend, devoted boyfriend who would do anything for Violet, and speaks volumes of teen angst to many a smitten heart. It doesn’t hurt that Evan Peters, who plays Tate, is easy on the eyes as well. Is that why it’s so hard to remember that Langdon is such a deplorable character?

Tate is a school shooter. He took the lives of several classmates and should represent what we most despise and do not condone in this nation right now. He also assaulted Violet’s mother, Vivian, causing her to become pregnant with his Antichrist baby. How can anyone still crush on this guy knowing what harm he’s done?

Despite some general storytelling issues, Greengrass succeeds in delivering another well-crafted and intelligent docudrama-thriller with 22 July.

In-between his efforts on the Bourne movies, journalist-turned filmmaker Paul Greengrass has spent much of his career making docudrama-thrillers about real-world events, ranging from the September 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. (United 93) to the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama in 2009 (Captain Phillips). While there’s an inherent risk of exploiting a real-world tragedy that comes with any such project, Greengrass has long been celebrated for his ability to dramatize terrible events on the big screen in a manner that’s intense, yet sensitive and ultimately insightful in its presentation. Thankfully, that remains the case with his Netflix Original 22 July, even if it doesn’t necessarily represent the writer/director at his finest. Despite some general storytelling issues, Greengrass succeeds in delivering another well-crafted and intelligent docudrama-thriller with 22 July.

22 July picks up on July 21, 2011 in Oslo, Norway, as Anders Behring Breivik (Anders Danielsen Lie) – a self-declared right wing extremist – prepares to carry out a terrorist attack on the city the next day. He begins his assault by setting off a bomb in a van near the main office of the then-current Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg (Ola G. Furuseth), killing eight people in the process. Breivik then proceeds to continue his attack by gunning down 69 members of a summer camp organized by the AUF – the youth division of the Norwegian Labour Party – on the island of Utøya, before he is ultimately apprehended by the police and taken into custody.

Among the members of the summer camp is one Viljar Hanssen (Jonas Strand Gravli), who manages to survive Breivik’s attack despite being shot multiple times and left permanently maimed. As Viljar struggles to recover both physically and psychologically from what happened to him (along with everyone else who survived the Utøya shootings and their loved ones), Breivik works with his chosen lawyer Geir Lippestad (Jon Øigarden) to mount a defense and use his trial as a platform to publicly announce his political agenda (which calls for the immediate deportation of all Muslims and heavier restrictions on immigration to Norway, among other things). When it becomes clear to Viljar what Breivik intends to do, he grows increasingly determined to continue his rehabilitation and testify against him in court for not only himself, but also every other person whose lives were affected by what took place on July 22.

Adapted from the book One of Us: The Story of a Massacre in Norway — and Its Aftermath by Åsne Seierstad, Greengrass’ script for 22 July has a very clear-cut three act structure – with the first act focused on the July 22 attack, the second part set during its immediate aftermath, and the final third centered on Breivik’s trial. The film is strongest during its first and third acts in particular, as those chapters (respectively) play to Greengrass’ strengths as a suspense-thriller storyteller and provide the emotional payoff to Viljar and, thus, Norway’s overarching journey of recovery and survival. It’s the second act where things start to drag and get a little muddled, especially as 22 July splits its focus between not only Viljar’s story thread, but also Lippestad and Breivik’s trial preparation, and the investigation into Stoltenberg’s administration and its failure to prevent a terrorist attack. While there’s nothing in the second act that feels inessential, 22 July struggles to divide its attention evenly between its three plotlines and the film’s pacing suffers for it.

On the whole, however, 22 July does a nice job covering a fair amount of narrative ground, even when taking its pretty substantial runtime into consideration. It helps that Greengrass (as he’s known now for doing, as a director) never fully lifts his foot off the gas pedal and keeps the film’s proceedings feeling on-edge throughout, even during its more purely dramatic portions. The filmmaker, working this time around with DP Pål Ulvik Rokseth (The Snowman) and Oscar-winning Argo editor William Goldenberg, uses essentially the same vérité cinematography and restless editing style that he has on his previous movies, in order to fully immerse viewers in the film’s setting and action. At the same time, Greengrass slows things down a bit here and, in turn, delivers a movie that’s more visually cohesive than some of his weaker efforts in the past (see the last Bourne sequel, in particular). This serves 22 July well, allowing it to effectively work as both a grounded drama and thriller.

Given the sheer amount of information that 22 July strives to cover, though, there’s not a lot of room for the film’s actors to really shine – not in the way that Barkhad Abdi and Tom Hanks did in Captain Phillips, for example. Even so, the 22 July cast is uniformly strong across the board, with Gravli especially doing an excellent job of portraying Viljar’s struggles with his physical injuries, PTSD, and the sheer amount of emotional baggage that he’s saddled with after barely managing to escape the attack on Utøya with his own life. Actors like Thorbjørn Harr and Isak Bakli Aglen are similarly moving in their smaller roles as members of Viljar’s family, as is Seda Witt as Lara Rashid, a young woman who starts to make a romantic connection with Viljar before both of their lives are shattered by Breivik’s attack. As for Breivik himself: Lie is quite compelling in the role and portrays the terrorist as a fully-developed person – one whose rationalization of his behavior makes him chilling and pathetic in equal measure.

As with his previous films, Greengrass uses 22 July as a means for delivering larger sociopolitical commentary about the state of things in the world, specifically where it concerns the rise of xenophobic and nationalist ideologies in various countries (the U.S. included). While his scripted dialogue can start to become a bit on the nose as its strives to get these points across (especially in the third act), Greengrass largely succeeds in allowing the story here to shine a light on these issues organically, without getting up on his figurative soapbox to drive the point home. If there’s a downside to the filmmaker’s approach, though, it’s that July 22 winds up handling its subject matter in a way that’s more engaging intellectually than emotionally and, thus, lacks the emotional resonance of Greengrass’ best work to date.

All things considered, however, Greengrass does a very good job of bringing the true story behind 22 July to cinematic life. The final result is a film that makes for an enlightening and otherwise respectful documentation of a horrifying real-world event, rather than one that comes off as exploitative or manipulative. 22 July is showing in select theaters now – in order to qualify for next year’s major film awards shows – and it certainly benefits from being seen on the big screen, but can still be appreciated just as much as a Netflix Original on your home TV. While it’s obviously not a light-hearted viewing experience, 22 July is very much worth checking out if you’ve enjoyed Greengrass’ previous non-Bourne efforts and/or would like to know more about Norway’s own infamous modern terrorist attack.

Making A Murderer Part 2 Trailer: The Conviction Was Just The Beginning

Part 2 of Netflix’s true-crime docuseries Making a Murderer is set to stream on October 19, according to the first trailer. The new season is an anticipated follow-up to one of the most talked-about true-crime series in recent memory. The original series, which premiered in 2015, joined the likes of Serial and HBO’s The Jinx, as not only captivating television (or podcasts), but also highly influential series with real-world implications. The two subjects of Making a Murderer, Steven Avery and his newphew Brendan Dassey, had their convictions investigated — and in Dassey’s case, overturned before being upheld again — by a lengthy and fraught legal battle that is now the subject of the series’ second season. 

That Netflix would want to capitalize on the fervor of the first season is no surprise, but given that the follow-up was announced soon after the first season became a sensation, it is rather surprising the streaming service was willing to wait as long as it did for more. That certainly works in favor of the new episodes, as not only does it feel less opportunistic, but it also presents a greater likelihood that there will be more new information viewers were perhaps unaware of.

The trailer for Making a Murderer Part 2 plays out less as a follow-up to season 1 than a response to the furor it caused. The new season focuses its attentions on the efforts by attorney Kathleen Zellner to overturn the conviction of Avery and Dassey, and there’s plenty of seemingly compelling evidence presented to make is seem as though Zellner, her team, and Avery have a fighting chance. Of course, with all true crime documentaries, the news and the internet will beat them to the punch, so what they offer will be a more in-depth look at the process of overturning a conviction and, presumably, the evidence that will once again get viewers creating petitions to overturn a murder conviction. Whether Making a Murderer Part 2 will be the phenomenon season 1 was remains to be seen, but true-crime obsessives won’t have to wait long to get their fix.

World War Z Sequel Begins Production in June, Confirms Producer

It seems World War Z 2 will finally begin production next June, according to one of the movie’s producers. Getting the first movie – which was directed by Marc Forster and based on a script by Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, and Damon Lindelof – onto the big screen was a long and arduous journey. While it wasn’t a direct adaptation of Max Brooks’ acclaimed novel of the same name, it was still a different take on the zombie subgenre.

However, that doesn’t mean it revolutionized the horror genre. World War Z received generally positive reviews from critics and earned a whopping $540 million at the worldwide box office against an estimated production budget of $190 million, which was more than enough for Paramount Pictures to commission a sequel. But development on the follow-up installment lagged for years until the studio’s new chief came on board in 2017 and started to push it forward. Now, it’s slated to start filming next summer.

In an interview with Variety on the red carpet for Beautiful Boy, producer Dede Gardner confirmed that World War Z 2 will begin production in June 2019. She also reaffirmed that Brad Pitt would be reprising his role from the first movie as Gerry Lane, with David Fincher on board to direct. Furthermore, producer Jeremy Kleiner provides an update on the script, saying that screenwriter Dennis Kelly is still working on it, but they’re quite happy with what they have so far.

It’s interesting that Paramount Pictures, especially under new leadership, still sees potential in this story despite it being more than five years since the first movie released. Sure, it performed well at the box office, but the zombie genre is even more crowded now than it was then. After all, Paramount recently and briefly started to develop a reputation for offloading properties they thought wouldn’t perform well in theaters, primarily to streaming giant Netflix. That’s why movies like Annihilation and The Cloverfield Paradox suddenly found themselves streaming online. But in the midst of all the apparent turmoil was World War Z 2, which kept on trudging forward.

Fincher started filming the second season of Netflix’s Mindhunter this past summer, so, given how adamant Gardner is about the June production start time frame, it seems the filmmaker has set aside time next summer to get the ball rolling on the long-awaited World War Z sequel. Whether they actually make that production start date remains to be seen, but at least fans can rest assured knowing the studio hasn’t forgotten about the movie.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Legendary Armor Locations Guide

In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, there are legendary armor sets that players can obtain by completing missions, defeating specific bosses, or simply opening the right chests in the right areas. Obtaining and equipping a full set of legendary armor will grant players bonuses, some of which may change the entire course of their journey (including how they approach Odyssey‘s abilities).

While some legendary armor pieces may be acquired early on in the game, it’s best to wait until at least halfway through the story until players start to really try to obtain full sets. After all, most of them require defeating members of the Cult of Kosmos – and that can be harrowing in and of itself. Plus, the Cultists aren’t even introduced until quite a bit into the story.

Furthermore, equipping just one piece of legendary armor will grant players a bonus, but equipping all five pieces of equipment can either increase damage for all weapons and abilities, increase armor resistance, and perhaps even make players immortal in the grand scheme of things. Pilgrim’s Legendary Armor Set

Players have to scour the Greek world looking for specific chests on specific islands. And acquiring each Pilgrim armor piece allows players to spend 40% less adrenaline when using the Shadow of Nyx ability.

  • Pilgrim’s Gloves – Inside a chest in the Akropolis of Argos.

  • Agamemnon’s Gauntlets – Inside a chest at the Silver Mine in Athens.
  • Agamemnon’s Body Armor – Defeat The Silver Griffin.

Immortal Legendary Armor Set

Although players can’t become immortal while wearing the Immortal legendary armor set, they do get an additional 20% health restored to them upon respawning. However, they first need to defeat the entire Worshippers of the Bloodline branch of the Cult of Kosmos.

  • Gauntlets of the Immortal – Defeat Chrysis.

Greek Heroes Legendary Armor Set

Instead of taking down Cultists, for the Greek Heroes legendary armor set, players have to take on mercenaries, who will drop the Perseus Helmet, Jason’s Golden Fleece, Bracers of Theseus, Hippolyta’s Belt, and Atalanta’s Sandals. However, different mercenaries may drop different items for different players. The armor set provides a bonus of 20% to all resistances.

  • Defeat The Translucent
  • Defeat The Flash
  • Defeat The Lucky Drunk
  • Defeat The Frenzied
  • Defeat The Resplendent

Arena Fighter’s Legendary Armor Set

In order to obtain the Arena Fighter’s legendary armor set, players will have to complete the Arena – defeating every champion – for a second time at or near the max level. Wearing the full set provides players with a bonus of +10% health restored with overpower.

  • Master’s Artemis Gloves – Defeat the Erymanthian Boar and deliver the pelt to Daphnae.

  • Master’s Artemis Belt – Defeat Kallisto the Bear and deliver the pelt to Daphnae.

Snake Legendary Armor Set

One of the more intriguing legendary armor sets in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the Snake set, which grants players a bonus of +10% intoxicated damage and weakening effect. The entire Eye of Kosmos branch of the Cult of Kosmos needs to be defeated in order to obtain the full set.

  • Viper’s Hood – Defeat The Master.
  • Venom Gloves – Defeat Hermippos.
  • Scaled Armor – Defeat The Snake.
  • Slithering Belt – Defeat Sotera.
  • Noxious Boots – Defeat Midus in Argolis.

Athenian War Hero Legendary Armor Set

Players have to defeat all the cultists part of the Delian League to obtain the Athenian War Hero legendary armor set. A full set grants a bonus allowing players to penetrate shields with arrows.

  • Athenian War Hero Helmet – Defeat Kodros the Bull.
  • Athenian War Hero Gauntlets – Defeat Brison.
  • Athenian War Hero Armor – Defeat Iobates the Stoic.

Spartan War Hero Legendary Armor Set

Considering that Sparta famously fought in the Peloponnesian War, it makes sense that players have to defeat the Peloponnesian League of the Cult of Kosmos to get the Spartan War Hero legendary armor set, which appropriately grants players +15% damage to all Warrior abilities.

  • Spartan War Hero Helmet – Defeat Monger in Korinthia.
  • Spartan War Hero Gauntlets – Defeat Silanos of Paros.
  • Spartan War Hero Armor – Defeat Skylax the Fair.
  • Spartan War Hero Belt – Defeat Lagos the Archon.

Pirate Legendary Armor Set

To get the Pirate legendary armor set, perhaps one of the coolest looking armor sets in the game, players have to take down the Gods of the Aegean Sea cultists. Then, the full armor set grants a +15% damage to all Assassin abilities.

  • Pirate Hood – Defeat Melanthos.
  • Pirate Gauntlets – Defeat Asterion.
  • Pirate Armor – Defeat The Octopus.
  • Pirate Waistband – Defeat Sokos.
  • Pirate Treads – Defeat The Mytilenian Shark.

Demigod Legendary Armor Set

Loot Deimos at the end of the main story to obtain four of the five pieces of armor needed to complete the Demigod legendary armor set. The four pieces of armor are: Demigod’s Chestplate, Demigod’s Bracers, Demigod’s Belt, and Demigod’s Boots. The final armor piece, Aspasia’s Circlet, is obtained by defeating the final Cult of Kosmos member, the Ghost of Kosmos.

In total, there are 12 legendary armor sets in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Some of them will be relatively easy to obtain, while others will require some skill and ingenuity. But Ubisoft’s latest installment is quite long and expansive, so there’s no rush. After all, one or two of them can only be acquired after completing the game itself.

Shameless Star Cameron Monaghan Leaving Show After Next Episode

Cameron Monaghan, who portrays Ian Gallagher on Shameless, has revealed that the next episode of the show will be his last. The Showtime series, adapted from the U.K. comedy-drama of the same name, is currently airing its ninth season. And Monagahn isn’t the only one exiting the acclaimed show: this news comes on the heels of star Emmy Rossum’s own announcement that she will be exiting the series at the end of the season.

Monaghan, who has been acting since he was a child, landed his first starring role playing Ian, one of the middle children of the Gallagher family who, along with their neighbors in a low-income neighborhood in Chicago’s South Side, struggle to get by in a changing landscape. Gallagher’s character has faced a lot of hardship on the show, from coming out to his family to dealing with his bipolar disorder. The actor has received recognition for playing the character, especially for the relationship between Ian and Mickey, his first boyfriend, but now he feels that it’s time to go.

Monaghan shared the news on Instagram in a long caption accompanying images of himself and some of his castmates, including Ethan Cutkosky (Carl Gallagher), Jeremy Allen White (Lip Gallagher), Steve Howey (Kevin “Kev” Ball), and Shanola Hampton (Veronica “V” Fisher). In his statement, Monaghan explains that he has known that he would be leaving the show for a year, but kept it a secret, wanting viewers to be surprised and to “experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character.” 

Monaghan recalls how he began filming when he was 15, and how much he has grown in the nearly 10 years since. He notes that he is “gracious” for everything the experience brought him, especially the people he met on the show. “All good things must come to an end,” he proclaims, noting the cliche. He ends his statement by thanking the fans for watching and signing off with a question about the future: “Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?”

Though it’s sad to see Monaghan go, it does free up his schedule for his other notable TV role(s). Monaghan recurs on Gotham as twin brothers Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska, who bear a resemblance to Batman’s nemesis, the Joker. From the beginning, the show has teased that Jerome could be the Joker, but neither he nor Jeremiah has ever been officially given the moniker. As the show prepares to enter its final season, word has spread that there’s yet another Joker on the horizon, and this one might be the real deal. Audiences will find out when Gotham season 5 five premieres early next year.

Avengers 4 Reshoots: Tom Holland Traveled to Atlanta Earlier This Week

Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) flew to Atlanta earlier this week, presumably to join the ongoing Avengers 4 reshoots. Starting last month, additional work for the Marvel Studios blockbuster has been going on for several weeks now, with some actors coming back to the set to finish their respective parts. The latest update from the set came from Chris Evans, who announced he had wrapped up with an emotional social media post.

Not much is known regarding the movie, especially since Marvel Studios has been actively trying to keep any kind of information about it tightly under wraps. The reshoots are mainly being done inside a sound stage, so no set photos have come out since the first batch last month. However, since news of actors coming and going in Atlanta tends to make its way online, fans at least know the characters (aside from those who survived Thanos’ snap) appearing in the film, like Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis. The latest MCU cast member to apparently join the reshoots is Holland.

A Twitter user with the handle goldenclosetboy shared an image of Holland on a flight from Atlanta to New York on October 5, giving fans the impression that the actor was in town to participate in the ongoing reshoots for Avengers 4. Holland – who’s also in the middle of filming Spider-Man: Far From Home – had just come back in the U.S. to continue shooting the Phase 4 film, following months of production around Europe. And while Spider-Man: Homecoming filmed at Pinewood Atlanta back in 2016, its sequel isn’t scheduled to use the facility, further backing up the idea he was in town for Avengers 4. Check out the photo below.

It’s uncertain in what capacity the currently dead MCU heroes will be involved in Avengers 4. While Thanos claimed that the genocide would be random, Marvel Studios brilliantly picked out the original Avengers and several important supporting characters to survive the purge, giving them one last mission before some (or most of them) bid goodbye to the franchise. Heroes like Captain America and Black Widow who didn’t have much to do in Avengers: Infinity War are expected to play a pivotal part in the Phase 3 capper, and chances are that the focus of the film will be on the principal heroes.

Having said that, Avengers 4 is both the end to a 22-film arc, and the beginning of a new one, so fans can expect that there will be some sort of passing of the baton between the MCU’s old guard and new faces. Considering that Spider-Man is Iron Man’s protege – with Stark playing the role of Peter’s mentor since his introduction in Captain America: Civil War – a reunion between the two is a fitting way to end Iron Man’s arc should he die in the upcoming film, and a great setup for Peter’s future journey as a superhero.

Scott Wilson, Walking Dead’s Hershel, Dies at 76

Scott Wilson, who played popular character Hershel Greene on The Walking Dead, has passed away at the age of 76. Hershel memorably died on the show at the hands of The Governor, but since then, Wilson has appeared at a number of conventions – including Walker Stalker Con – and remained a favorite among fans.

Wilson started his Walking Dead journey back in 2011, when his character Hershel was introduced. His first appearance was in the episode “Bloodletting” in season 2, after Carl Grimes was accidentally shot. Hershel is able to save Carl’s life because of his experience as a veterinarian, and had been living a secluded life on his farm with his family since the outbreak. He always had a strict moral code, and cared deeply for his daughters Maggie and Beth. As the show went on, Hershel became a mentor of sorts to Rick Grimes, and provided wisdom and advice to other main characters. Wilson took part in 37 episodes of The Walking Dead, with his last appearance coming in season 4.

As first reported by Comic Book, Wilson passed away today at the age of 76. Reports of the actor’s death occurred after many people posted tributes honoring Wilson on social media, and those reports were later confirmed to be true. TMZ later revealed that Wilson “passed away peacefully at his home in L.A”. Dominic Mancini, who worked as Wilson’s rep, explained that the actor passed away as a result of complications from leukemia. Bizarrely, Wilson’s death was confirmed not too long after Hershel was confirmed to appear in season 9 of The Walking Dead.

Wilson had been a well-known actor long before his time on AMC’s hit show. Wilson started his acting career in 1967 with the film In the Heat of the Night, and later became known for roles in films like 1974’s The Great GatsbyThe Ninth Configuration, and A Year of the Quiet Sun. In the years after his time on The Walking Dead was up, Wilson appeared on the TV shows Bosch, Damien, and The OA. Most recently, he appeared in the movie Hostiles alongside Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, as well as voiced his Walking Dead character in an episode of Robot Chicken.

Wilson’s character on The Walking Dead had a big impact on the other characters, and fans often credit Wilson’s casting as one of the stronger decisions made by the show. Many actors have come and gone during the show’s eight seasons, but none have been quite like Wilson. With season 9 looking to recapture the feel of earlier seasons,  one can’t help but look back and reminisce about Wilson’s journey on The Walking Deadand his career in general.
