Jason Momoa Shaves Off Trademark Beard to Raise Environmental Awareness

Aquaman actor Jason Momoa has taken a shocking plunge, shaving off his famous beard in a bid to raise awareness around environmental issues. The 39-year-old actor, famous for his rugged good looks, has completely removed the beard that has become synonymous with roles such as Khal Drogo and Aquaman and has shocked fans with his new look.

Fans of Momoa and his work are used to seeing him sporting long rugged locks, heavy brows (complete with scar that he received courtesy of a bar brawl and 140 stitches) and of course his trademark beard, but it seems that Momoa is now altering his image and all for a good cause. The Hawaiian born actor has spoken previously of his passion for water conservation and what better advocate for such an issue than Aquaman, himself.

On his Instagram, Momoa shared a video of himself to his 11 million followers, removing his beard and talking of the reasons why. In his post titled, Infinitely Recyclable, the Game of Thrones actor can be seen outdoors, traipsing through plastic waste and taking an electric razor to his beard. He has received mixed reactions online, with many fans supporting his actions while others reportedly heartbroken with his new image. In his video he speaks to the camera, while he shears away, talking of plastic pollution as something that he doesn’t merely want to complain about, but something that he can help influence, citing aluminum as one way to tackle the issue.

The video has had over 2.5 million views and has garnered support from his Game of Thrones co-stars, Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey. It’s also been posted as promo for a new line of recyclable canned water, though it’s yet to be confirmed what the actor’s role is with the new product from The Ball Corporation. But with 19 billion pounds of plastic waste a year entering the oceans around the world and with Momoa’s distaste for plastic water bottles, as stated in the video, it is unsurprising that the actor has joined in efforts to help alleviate this.

This comes at a time when many celebrities join in with the call to be kinder and more responsible to the environment, and when shows such as Netflix’s Our Planet, voiced by veteran broadcaster and conservationist David Attenborough, bring both the wonder of and responsibility to the planet, to audiences around the world, with breathtaking cinematography and natural history storytelling at its best.

And so, while this may be seen as timely given the environmental issues surrounding plastic use, and the epic finale season of Game of Thrones, the show that shot him – and his beard – into the limelight, it’s yet to be seen if the role of environment warrior will now be bestowed upon Momoa. Whatever happens, with the actor now set to take up a new role in Denis Villeneuve’s reboot of Dune in 2020, it is definitely the end of an era for Jason Momoa, with some epic roles behind him and with exciting new ones to come.

Henry Cavill ‘Absolutely’ Isn’t Leaving Superman Role, Says Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa claims his DCEU co-star Henry Cavill is sticking around as Superman. Cavill has played Superman/Clark Kent in 3 movies so far; Man Of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Justice League. While fans have criticized certain elements of the how the character was portrayed – ranging from the destruction he caused during Man Of Steel’s finale to the fact he seems to hate being a superhero – Cavill himself has received generally good reviews for his work.

Many felt his turn in Justice League was his best work as Superman to date, but sadly his performance was famously marred by distracting CGI work on his face to remove a mustache he grew for Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Justice League, in general, proved to be a big disappointment to fans and critics, and it was reported in September Cavill had exited the franchise. His agent would later state he still had the role, but Cavill’s future with the DCEU is still uncertain.

Cavill is currently gearing up to star in the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher, so he’s not hurting for work right now. In a new interview with ET Live to promote Aquaman, Jason Momoa stated Cavill loves the part and he wasn’t going anywhere.

Nor Cavill or Warner Bros have made an official comment on the topic, and with DC busy focusing on other projects like Birds Of Prey and the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie, it seems Superman is taking an extended break. The critical reception to the DC universe movies has been decidedly mixed thus far, so it’s possible the studio wants to focus on developing other characters and franchises before deciding on the futures of Superman and Batman.

It’s hard to know how much stock to put in Momoa’s comments, but considering he and Cavill have a friendship, he’d at least have some kind of insight into what’s happening behind the scenes. Ben Affleck’s future with Batman and the DCEU has also been in question for some time, with reports suggesting Matt Reeves’ forthcoming The Batman will be an origin story. Reeves’ is said to be looking for a younger actor for the movie, but it will still tie into Affleck’s take on the character. Reports suggest production on the movie will begin in summer 2019.

Jason Momoa Really Wants to See Zack Snyder’s Justice League Cut

Aquaman star Jason Momoa doesn’t hold back when asked about Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League, making it clear he really wants to see it released. After the underwhelming theatrical performance of Justice League, the DCEU clearly needed a break, and that’s exactly what it got. By the time Aquaman releases in the U.S., it’ll have been more than a year since Justice League united six of DC’s most famous heroes on the big screen for the first time.

While it’s odd to consider a movie that grossed $657 million worldwide a failure, one must consider the fact that due to so much of Justice League being re-shot by replacement director Joss Whedon following Snyder’s departure from the project, the DCEU’s attempt at matching The Avengers ended up costing way more than the other entries into the franchise. Combine that with it holding the dubious distinction of being the lowest-grossing DCEU film, and Justice League’s status as a flop becomes undeniable, no matter how many individual viewers might have liked it. There’s no real excuse for a movie starring DC’s “holy trinity” of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman not to outperform Suicide Squad at the box office.

For months now, many DC fans have been waging a crusade with one goal: convincing Warner Bros. and DC Films to release Zack Snyder’s original cut of Justice League. While it’s unknown for sure if a complete cut of Snyder’s vision even exists, the filmmaker has done nothing but add fuel to the fire by regularly releasing material from his cut that didn’t make the theatrical version, and even recently acknowledged the Snyder Cut movement directly for the first time. Now, when asked about the Snyder Cut by MTV News during an interview promoting Aquaman, Momoa added his voice to the chorus. The actor first acknowledged how studio politics usually prohibited people in his position from speaking their mind about such things, then proceeded to do just that, enthusiastically expressing his desire to see the Snyder Cut, complete with dropping an F-bomb. Check out the endearingly candid moment below.

While those involved with Justice League – including even Snyder himself – have usually deftly avoided questions about the original cut of the film, it’s quite refreshing to see Momoa just come out and say what he thinks, likely realizing that he’s currently in a prominent enough position with DC to avoid any reprimand or reprisal for doing so. After all, the buzz around Aquaman going into release is quite positive, and it looks like the film won’t perform as poorly at the box office as initially projected. If Aquaman serves to get the DCEU back on the right track critically and commercially, WB and DC will be too busy celebrating its success to care that Momoa disobeyed their seeming corporate directive.

Another factor in Momoa being so forthright is likely his well-known respect and admiration for Snyder, who personally cast the actor as Aquaman, and helped develop the character’s DCEU identity. Momoa has addressed some of the differences between Aquaman’s story in Snyder’s cut and Whedon’s cut before, and while he’s never disrespected Whedon or insulted the theatrical cut, he’s never really attempted to hide the fact that he preferred Snyder’s vision for both the project as a whole and Arthur Curry in particular. Here’s hoping fan’s eventually get to see Aquaman’s Justice League journey for themselves.

Jason Momoa Is A Dedicated NBC Page in New SNL Promo

Jason Momoa becomes a dedicated NBC Page in a new promo for his upcoming appearance on Saturday Night Live. Momoa is hosting the live sketch comedy series to promote his upcoming Aquaman standalone film.

Season 44 of Saturday Night Live started off with Star Wars star Adam Driver hosting with Kanye West as a musical guest, and it involved some slight controversy as West gave an unaired rant about being a Donald Trump supporter. Leslie Jones had previously hoped that SNL would focus less on politics, but that doesn’t appear to be happening, seeing as every episode this season has started with a political cold open. This season of SNL has been getting mixed reviews from fans, but has still secured many popular celebrities and musical guests to appear on the show. Recently it was revealed that Momoa would be hosting SNL for the eighth episode of season 44, and now NBC has released a new promo video for this episode.

Posted on the official SNL YouTube page, the promo begins with an NBC Page – an intern that works in different departments at NBC to get experience in the field – telling Momoa to man the phones while he takes care of an emergency. Momoa seems thrilled with the new position, and immediately gets a call regarding a question to which he doesn’t know the answer. Momoa quickly sets off to figure out the caller’s question, which includes a series of physical stunts that include punching Beck Bennett, breaking into Lorne Michaels’ office, and breakdancing his way through security lasers. The promo ends with Momoa coming to the realization that the show is recorded live, which turns out to have been the caller’s question. The full promo can be seen below.

Momoa is probably best known for his role of Arthur Curry (aka Aquaman) in the DC film universe, as he has already starred as the character in both Justice League and in a brief cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, he has also appeared in Game of Thrones and the remake of Conan the Barbarian. While Momoa had already been an established actor prior to being cast in the DC Extended Universe, he is getting the opportunity to host SNL this Saturday to promote his upcoming movie Aquaman, which will be released shortly after the episode airs.

Although season 44 of SNL has been getting mixed reviews thus far, having Momoa will more than likely boost ratings given the anticipation for Aquaman. Aside from advertising the next episode of the show, this promo also gives fans a taste of what is in store in terms of Momoa’s comedic chops. If the actual episode of Saturday Night Live is anything like this promo video, fans will be in for a treat when the episode finally airs.

Aquaman’s Jason Momoa Reveals Advice He Received From X-Men Star

Jason Momoa has revealed that ahead of filming DC’s upcoming Aquaman film, he was offered a pearl of wisdom from none other than X-Men star Michael Fassbender. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger in 1941, the character made his DCEU debut in 2017’s Justice League. Although the film proved to be a critical and commercial disappointment, DC and Warner Bros remained steadfast in their plans for a solo adventure. The return of the sea-faring hero will mark the first standalone outing since the blockbuster team-up, with many fans hoping it’ll serve as a turning point in the collective franchise.

The story will see the half-human partner with Amber Head’s Mera to prevent a war between his two worlds. A recent clip revealed that he’ll be sent by Vulko (Willem Dafoe) to recover The Trident of Neptune in order to achieve this goal. In the process, he’ll be forced to battle his half-brother Orm, and the classic comic villain, Black Manta. The film also stars Dolph Lundgren, Nicole Kidman, and Julie Andrews in a top-secret role. James Wan, who recently revealed a desire to direct a horror-based Batman film, served as director.

Speaking exclusively to RTE, Momoa revealed how Fassbender directly inspired him when filming Aquaman. When asked whether there was more of himself in this role than any he’s played before, Momoa said that was indeed the case. “Unfortunately, yes,” he said. The former Game of Thrones actor then went on the elaborate how Fassbender was the reason for such a creative choice. “He really told me to put in moments of me and find those moments that you can put you in the film so that it can shine through.”

Momoa admitted that he isn’t usually one to do the whole “name-drop thing,” but the advice apparently stemmed from a conversation between the two friends that revolved around superhero roles. Fassbender is, of course, no stranger to such parts. He has played Magneto in three X-Men movies to date, with a fourth, Dark Phoenix, due to be released in 2019. As well as that, he also featured in both Jonah Hex and Zack Snyder’s 300. “[Fassbender] was a big influence for me and I was doing that a lot in Aquaman,” Momoa concluded. “So thanks, buddy!”

Although there will be a Man of Steel homage, it’s unlikely that any other DC heroes will show up. With no current plans for Batman and Superman, a lot’s riding on the reluctant king’s shoulders to step up and become a central figure as the collective franchise moves forward. It remains to be seen what elements of himself Momoa injected into the role. Based on the positive early reactions, though, taking Fassbender’s advice would appear to have paid off. As such, Aquaman could prove to be more than King of the Seas when it finally hits theaters.

Jason Momoa Meets His Madame Tussauds Aquaman Wax Figure

Jason Momoa meets the Madame Tussauds wax figure based on his look for Aquaman. The actor reprises his DCEU role as half human/half Atlantean Arthur Curry, this time in the James Wan-directed flick that will serve as the character’s origin story in the franchise. The events of the upcoming film take place after Steppenwolf’s failed attempt to take over Earth in Justice League. Despite that, don’t expect any other hero from the DCEU to pop up in the flick, as it’ll mainly be a character-driven, isolated narrative.

Marking Warner Bros.’ return to the superhero film arena after taking more than a year hiatus, many are looking forward to how Aquaman builds off the established lore in the DCEU. Plot specifics are being kept under wraps, as Wan promises that there’s so much more in the movie than what’s been seen in the trailers. The global press tour for the film is about to start, but before Momoa, his co-stars and their director jet set around the world, the actor was first able to physically see his epic new wax figure from the famed Madame Tussauds.

Fresh off the New York press conference for Aquaman, Momoa got acquainted with the life-sized statue of Arthur Curry, inspired by his look in the upcoming film. The former Game of Thrones star was obviously thrilled and impressed by the figure, which was created by Madame Tussauds in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products on behalf of DC Entertainment. Check out some photos from the event below, via Momoa’s Instagram.

The statue is the same one unveiled early last month at Madame Tussauds in Orlando as part of their Justice League: A Call for Heroes experience, which will become available for the public to check out starting December 7. Meanwhile, Madame Tussauds Sydney will open their iteration of the special display a few days later on December 13. Since the event’s opening is just a couple of weeks before Aquaman hits theaters all over the globe, it’s a good way to keep the hype train running until moviegoers can finally see Wan’s contribution to the DCEU.

For what it’s worth, marketing for Aquaman has been solid so far. Both Wan and Momoa have been very active on social media engaging their followers, and teasing them about the film. All trailers for the film have been well-received, and initial buzz following its red carpet premiere has been nothing but positive, giving many the impression that it will be a big hit for the DCEU.
