Morbius: Jared Leto Releases First Full Look At Sony’s Living Vampire

Jared Leto has revealed a fuller look at himself as Michael Morbius in Sony’s Morbius the Living Vampire movie. While Sony will continue to share Spider-Man with Marvel Studios for the foreseeable future, they’re also developing a separate line of films about the web-slinger’s more redeemable enemies and complicated antiheroes. The first of those movies, Venom, hit theaters last fall and failed to wow critics, but went on to gross $855 million at the global box office on a $100 million budget. With those kind of returns, it’s no wonder Sony is moving forward with Venom 2 for a potential October 2020 release date.

Between now and then, however, Sony will release Morbius, another film based around a dark superhero from the Spider-Man comic book universe. Leto is starring in the film as Dr. Morbius, a scientist who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, only to gain vampire-like abilities in the process. Leto teased his appearance as Morbius shortly after production got underway near the start of March, and has once again offered his followers on social media a glimpse of the man behind the “vampire”.

Leto posted the following clip of himself on the Moribus set to his Instagram account this week, providing a better look at his character in the film. Check it out, below.

As far as his appearance here goes, Morbius looks like a fairly ordinary (if scruffy) man in a hoodie. The character is typically portrayed as strikingly pale in the comics, with gaunt features and little to no facial hair (save for a small goatee). Presumably, this clip is from a scene in the movie where either Dr. Morbius is hiding his vampiric qualities from the world or has yet to actually experiment on himself. It also stands to reason that Leto’s full-blown vampiric form will bear a relatively close resemblance to the character in the comics. After all, for all the criticisms of Leto’s take on Joker in Suicide Squad, he was generally faithful to the villain’s traditional appearance (the added flourishes like his tattoos and teeth fillings aside). And much like Tom Hardy in Venom, the actor’s performance here promises to be far weirder than his comic book-inspired look.

Beyond that, it’ll be interesting to see if Morbius feels more like a traditional vampire movie than a typical superhero film. The movie’s writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless previously worked on Universal’s Dracula Untold, which was essentially a dark superhero origin story (one featuring an iconic movie monster) in its own right. Morbius director Daniel Espinosa comes from more of a sci-fi horror background by comparison, having previously helmed the film Life (a project that, as some have joked, could’ve been a Venom prequel with just a few tweaks). Either way, their sensibilities seem to lend themselves well to Sony’s latest peculiar comic book offering.

Jared Leto’s Morbius Can Fly In Movie Set Video

A new set video for Morbius shows Jared Leto’s character flying. Sony has released many Marvel movies over the years, but in 2020, Morbius the Living Vampire will grace the big screen for the character’s first ever movie. Morbius will be the next film in Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe, which started with Venom last year.

Michael Morbius first appeared back in 1971 for The Amazing Spider-Man #101 and was a brilliant scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease. In an attempt to cure his disease, Morbius accidentally infected himself with an even worse disease which he called, “pseudo-vampirism.” Like many superheroes and villains, Morbius’ newfound powers made him faster and stronger, but he also has some unique abilities like hypnotism and the power to turn others into vampires. In the comics, Morbius can also glide by using mental concentration, which is one power that appears to make it into the film.

First posted on the Morbius Twitter account (via: ComingSoon), Leto’s vampire character can be seen flying in new set photos and a video from Morbius. The video is rather short, but shows Leto performing a high-wire stunt while wearing what appears to be an orange prison jumpsuit. A few more images were also released from the set, but they don’t reveal much about the film itself. These images, as well as the short set video, can be seen below:

Aside from Leto as Morbius, there have been many casting announcements that have been made public in the last year. The Crown’s Matt Smith will be playing Loxias Crown, who will be Morbius’ best friend-turned-enemy. Also, Adria Arjona will be playing Martine Bancroft, who is usually Morbius’ main love interest in the comic books. Jared Harris and Tyrese Gibson have also joined the cast, although their exact character names have yet to be confirmed.

The official plot for Morbius has yet to be revealed, so fans have been relying on set pictures and videos like this to get a feel for what the movie will be like. Leto had previously released an official behind-the-scenes image from Morbius, but much like this video, his face was mostly hidden from the shot. With that in mind, fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer for another official sneak peek at the film since Morbius is currently in production with a set July 2020 release date.

Tyrese Gibson Joins Morbius’ Movie Cast, Character Details Revealed

Tyrese Gibson is joining the cast of Morbius, and character details for the entire ensemble have now been revealed. Sony is unsurprisingly moving full steam ahead with their Spider-Man-less spinoff universe after Venom became one of 2018’s biggest box office surprises. A sequel to the Tom Hardy hit is in development, but next up will be the Jared Leto starring Morbius.

The film will see Leto take on the role of Marvel Comics anti-hero Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who becomes a vampire after trying to cure his rare blood disease. Sony has spent the last few months filling up the supporting cast around Leto, with Adria Arjona being the first to join. Leto and Arjona were later joined by Matt Smith, but the most recent addition came with Jared Harris coming aboard the project. Now, Morbius has added another recognizable name, with details on the entire cast’s characters also surfacing.

According to a new report by Variety, Tyrese Gibson has joined the cast of Morbius. Gibson is best known for his role as Roman in the Fast & Furious franchise. Details on his character first appeared to be under wraps, but THR has shared that Gibson will play an FBI agent who’s trying to hunt down Leto’s living vampire. In addition to sharing Gibson’s role, THR also confirmed that Arjona is playing Leto’s love interest, Harris is his mentor, and Smith will be Morbius’ best friend turned villain Loxias Crown.

Since the blood lust from Morbius and Crown will force them to leave a trail of victims as they try to survive, Gibson will likely be in charge of trying to solve the various murders. Meanwhile, Arjona has long been expected to be playing Martine Bancroft, Morbius’ fiancée in the comics, so this is just further confirmation that that’s the case. Loxias Crown has likewise been linked to Morbius in the past as the main villain, but it’s good to know Smith is definitely playing that part. Harris being Morbius’ mentor is the newest piece of information, but no character name has been revealed.

All of this information comes as Morbius has already begun filming and Leto has shared a first look at the production. Gibson appears to be the last main addition to the film’s cast though, so the only additional casting announcements at this point could be for minor roles. Filming will continue for the next several weeks as Morbius aims to stay on track for a summer 2020 release, and there’s been nothing but positive movement on the film so far.

Morbius Confirmed for July 2020 Release

Morbius and Jared Leto

Jared Leto’s solo Morbius movie officially receives a July 2020 release date. Sony is in the midst of a great stretch of success thanks to their Marvel films. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a major awards winner and guaranteed more animated Spidey adventures in the future, but it was the surprise box office success of Tom Hardy’s Venom that gave the studio confidence in their plans for spinoff films for several Spider-Man related characters. One of these is Morbius, which will star Jared Leto as the doctor-turned-vampire.

Sony has moved the film through development rather quickly ever since Leto joined the project last summer. Daniel Espinosa was hired to direct the movie and production continued to move forward with hopes of filming beginning this year. That is very much the plan now as Morbius continues to add cast members, including recent addition Matt Smith. The film was already on track for a release some time next year, and now Sony has confirmed that is exactly what will happen.

THR‘s Aaron Couch shared the news that Sony has given Morbius a July 31, 2020 release date. The studio previously staked out this date for an untitled Marvel movie and it was believed at that time to be for Leto’s solo film. There are currently no other films scheduled to open this weekend, giving Morbius an early chance to have success at the end of the summer season next year.

Morbius the Living Vampire

Although Morbius is currently set to be the biggest opener the weekend it comes out, it does have stiff competition to follow. Warner Bros. just announced Christopher Nolan’s next movie will arrive two weeks ahead of Morbius‘ debut, and the Leto-led superhero film will have to directly follow the opening weekend of Disney’s Jungle Cruise, which boasts Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt among its stars. While some may wonder why Sony doesn’t just stick Morbius in the same slot where Venom succeeded, that is likely because Venom 2 is all but confirmed to hit theaters next October as well.

With filming set to begin very soon, it should be reassuring to fans anticipating this project to already know when it will hit theaters. Outside of Leto in the lead role and Matt Smith presumably playing the villain, Morbius has also added Adria Arjona as the main love interest Martine Bancroft. The next few months should be filled with additional updates on the project as filming continues through May. Since Morbius’ look shouldn’t require much of any CGI enhancement, it is very possible that Sony could treat fans with a first look at Leto’s vampire form for Morbius in the near future.

Adria Arjona in Talks to Join Morbius with Jared Leto

Adria Arjona is in talks to play Martine Bancroft in Sony’s Morbius movie starring Jared Leto. After the incredible box office performance of Venom, the studio’s shared universe plans are being solidified. Development is underway on another Tom Hardy led film, but the next film will be a Morbius the Living Vampire movie.

Sony pushed the project further into development late last year, but secured Leto as their Dr. Michael Morbius this past summer. At the same time of casting Leto, they also announced that Daniel Espinosa will be directing the solo movie. The film is currently in the casting process to fill a number of key roles alongside Leto. Character breakdowns revealed who the villain will be, as well as confirmation that Morbius’ usual love interest Martine Bancroft will be the female lead. Despite the knowledge of these two roles being included in the film, there were not yet any reports as to who could fill them. While the villain role still needs to be filled, it appears Morbius may have found its Martine.

Deadline is reporting that Adria Arjona is in talks to play the female lead in Morbius opposite of Leto. Arjona received her breakout roles on TV shows like True Detective and Emerald City, but has recently made the transition to movies too. She starred in the James Gunn produced The Belko Experiment and this year’s Pacific Rim: Uprising. Her filmography will be even larger by the time Morbius hits theaters with roles in Netflix’s Triple Frontier and 6 Underground scheduled for next year, and if this deal closes, it will add another big time production to her upcoming slate.

Martine Bancroft was created by Ray Thomas and Gil Kane in 1971 and first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #102. She is Morbius’ fiancée in the comics and is the first to discover the very first victim of Morbius’ bloodlust. Throughout her comic history, Martine has gone on to betray Morbius and even become a vampire herself. She is currently dead in the comics after Morbius himself killed her.

Arjona is clearly a rising talent in the industry, so this could prove to be a casting decision that fans are even more excited for as her future projects hit. She is currently the only other cast member attached to Morbius outside of its star, but that shouldn’t remain for long with the start of production in February 2019 right around the corner. Thanks to Sony’s future release date announcements, it appears Morbius will hit theaters in the summer of 2020, so Arjona and Leto should be joined by even more cast members in the coming weeks.

Jared Leto’s Morbius Movie Aiming to Start Filming In February 2019

Sony plans to start filming Morbius the Living Vampire starring Jared Leto early next year. Sony has their eyes set on launching a cinematic universe of their own however they can. Spider-Man (Tom Holland) may be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Sony is creating a Spider-Verse of their own. They’ll do so using characters related to Spidey in the comics, although he’s not currently set to appear in any of their in-development movies. Any doubts that the universe would actually take shape were largely squashed this past weekend thanks to Venom successfully launching to record setting numbers.

The next project that is going to come from this universe is a Morbius the Living Vampire movie that stars Leto. Morbius will be directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life) and is currently in pre-production as Sony aims to get the movie actually filming. Early reports pointed to a late 2018 start to production, but the film’s producers have now confirmed when it will officially begin.

Collider spoke to Sony producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach who are involved with the Spider-Verse and asked them about the status of Morbius. They confirmed the movie is very much happening and coming along nicely thanks to a script by Lost in Space creators Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. When Arad and Tolmach were asked when Morbius would begin filming, Arad said February is the target, while Tolmach stated, “Yeah, the plan is early part of next year. We’re still working on it.”

This relatively soon start for Morbius should mean the movie begins filming shortly after Venom ends its theatrical run. However, this isn’t an example of them rushing to get this movie made, as they’ve instead been developing it for close to a year. The project is finally at a place where additional announcements should be made as the film’s crew and filming schedule are locked down. Arad previously told us why he and Sony are so excited about Morbius, and the recurring theme to the comments by those involved is Leto’s commitment and interest in the role.

Since Morbius does not currently have a release date set, Sony can operate rather freely when it comes to securing the movie’s production schedule. There’s no mandated time that it must be finished by at this point, although Sony surely would like to get another Marvel property in theaters sooner rather than later. Of course, they will have Spider-Man: Far From Home in theaters next July, so it will be interesting to see if Morbius will be completed in time to have two Spidey-related films hit theaters in 2019. Venom started filming almost exactly a year before it hit theaters, so if Morbius takes a similar approach, then an early 2020 release date could be in its future. As for now, we’ll just have to wait for more details on the movie to arrive as the start of production nears.
