Spider-Man Meets Mysterio In New Far From Home Image

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man meets a new potential ally in Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in a new image from Spider-Man: Far From Home. All the attention for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently on the debut of Avengers: Endgame in theaters, and while fans around the world are just now beginning to experience the film, Phase 3 is not yet over. As Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently revealed, Spider-Man: Far From Home is actually the end of Phase 3, and it will hit theaters in just over two months.

The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Peter Parker go on an overseas summer vacation with his friends. It has previously been said that the film picks up just minutes after Avengers: Endgame, meaning it should be the first insight into the MCU after however the newly released blockbuster ends. The first trailer for Far From Home, though, suggests that it will not be an easy time for Peter. He wants to take a break from being a hero right now and just enjoy the summer, but is then recruited by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to fight The Elementals with the help of magician Quentin Beck aka Mysterio.

Although Mysterio is traditionally a villain to Spider-Man in the comics, Spider-Man: Far From Home is making him a hero (or at least that is what the cast and crew are saying in the press so far). The aforementioned trailer showed Mysterio fighting Hydro-Man, one of The Elementals, and appeared to save Peter in the process. Now in a new image from EW, the two heroes come face to face.

The possible first true encounter between Spider-Man and Mysterio is a big moment that fans of Marvel comics have been waiting to see, but it also confirms a major plot point for the movie. This photo confirms that Mysterio will know of Spider-Man’s true identity, which could come back to haunt Peter if Quentin does become a villain. The duo will reportedly quickly spark a friendship and director Jon Watts said that Mysterio will be the “cool uncle” to Peter when compared to Tony Stark being his mentor in Homecoming, which could make such a turn all the more difficult for Peter to accept.

The photo also gives us an incredibly detailed look at Mysterio’s costume, and the translation to the big screen is just as magnificent as fans of the comics have been hoping for. Additionally, the photo includes Numan Acar in the background, who is rumored to possibly be playing fellow Spidey villain Chameleon. The location of the meeting could potentially be the base of Mysterio and Chameleon, or at least a hiding spot. Regardless, it will be fascinating to see how Spider-Man and Mysterio’s relationship evolves from this point on in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

10 Reasons Mysterio Could Be The Best Cinematic Spider-Man Villain

Spider-Man Far From Home Mysterio Explained

With the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home just released, excitement for the film is at an all-time high. One of the standout elements of that first footage is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, one of Spider-Man’s classic foes from the comics.

We’ve already seen some of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains brought to the big screen in previous films, such as Doctor Octopus, The Lizard, and a few Green Goblins. However, Mysterio is one of the most exciting bad guys to get the live action treatment. From both the comic book history of the character and all the new directions the film could take him, Mysterio has the makings of a classic big screen villain. Let’s look at 10 reasons Mysterio could be the best cinematic Spider-Man villain.

10. A Fresh Villain

Mysterio in Spider-Man Far From Home

Bringing Mysterio to the big screen is further evidence of how confident the MCU is at this point. They could have played it safe with a well-known character, but instead, they embraced the craziness of the comics with a more obscure choice.

Mysterio is so unlike any other Spider-Man villain we’ve seen on the big screen. As fun as some of the past villains have been, it’s exciting to have something totally new. Just imagining how they are going to handle the many outlandish aspects of this character is enough to make him one of the most anticipated movie characters of 2019.

9. Bad Guy Abroad

One of the most exciting things about Spider-Man: Far From Home is that it removes Peter Parker from his usually New York City setting. The “school trip” concept allows us to see how Spider-Man operates in Europe for the first time. This also means Mysterio gets to face-off with Spider-Man outside his element.

The change in location might not seem like much, but given just that brief glimpse of Mysterio battling the Elemental in Venice shows how much fun some new scenery can be in movies like this. There is so much potential for the havoc Mysterio can cause across European destinations.

9. First Post-Thanos Villain

Thanos armor in Avengers Endgame

Spider-Man: Far From Home has the distinction of being the first post-Endgame film in the MCU. We still don’t know how Avengers: Endgame will end, but it’s safe to say the MCU will have changed as a result of that film.

Some of the world’s Avengers will likely be gone. Peter will probably be affected because of what happened to him. The world will know about threats far bigger than they could ever imagine. How will a villain like Mysterio work in a new world like this? It will be the MCU’s first response to bad guy in a post-Thanos world. It will be interesting to see where they take things.

8. The Design

It’s safe to assume one of the main reasons we have yet to see Mysterio on the big screen is because he looks absolutely ridiculous. With his colorful costume, over-the-top cape and fishbowl helmet, he always seemed like one of those characters that only worked on the pages of a comic book.

Judging by the first footage, the filmmakers were not afraid at all to embrace that classic look. He looks surprisingly accurate to the comic book design and it is awesome. While it might elicit some laughs, seeing such a comic book look brought to life is a lot of fun.

7. Unique Powers

Despite his unusual look, Mysterio is, in fact, a very cinematic character. He is not a typical comic book villain. He doesn’t have any superpowers and he is not particularly physically imposing. Instead, Mysterio uses his intellect and special skills at illusion and trickery to fight Spider-Man.

In comic book films, we tend to see the heroes face-off with bad guys who have similar powers to their own. Even in the Spider-Man movies, he’s usually battling some evil genius in a tech-based battle suit. Mysterio is bringing something fresh to the table and abilities with endless possibilities.

6. The MCU’s Recent Villains

After years of having their villains criticized as bland, the MCU is on a roll with their recent bad guys. The studio now seems to be more invested in creating compelling antagonists for their films. Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger was unforgettable and Thanos has already become iconic.

There’s so much we don’t know about Mysterio in the new film. However, given these recent examples, it seems unlikely Marvel will go back to churning out boring baddies. Expect some real depth to Mysterio’s motivations in the film.

5. The Mystery

When a villain appears in a comic book film, it’s usually pretty straightforward. We know they are the bad guy and we know they want to kill the good guy and take over the world. In the case of Mysterio, there is actually – and appropriately — quite a bit of mystery involved.

Is he the classic villain comic book readers know, or is he actually a hero? The first footage seems to confirm the theory that he is a good guy. But is there more mystery than that? Where does he come from? Are his powers real? All things are pointing to an intriguing character with plenty of twists and turns to him.

4. A Wannabe Avenger?

The filmmakers seem to want us to believe Mysterio is a good guy. The trailer shows that he is battling the Elementals and being quite effective. There are even reports that Nick Fury tries to recruit Mysterio. It could be that he is the newest addition to the Avengers.

However, it’s important to remember that in the comics, Mysterio is a master of illusions. What if these Elemental monsters are his own creation meant to make him appear more heroic? Could he be an Avengers fanboy trying to con his way to superhero stardom? It could be a fun twist and a mirrored version of Peter’s own desire to be an Avenger.

3. A Connection To Peter?

Casual Costume Spider-Man Far From Home

Many nervous fans noticed the absence of Tony Stark in the trailer. While it doesn’t confirm anything, it is possible that Peter loses his mentor in Avengers: Endgame. With Peter seemingly teaming up with Mysterio, could they be setting up a similar relationship in this film?

With the two fighting side-by-side, Peter could begin to look up to Mysterio, similar to how he idolized Stark. This would be a fitting way to cement a strong connection between the two and would be heartbreaking when Mysterio probably (definitely) turns on him. It could bring some real emotional stakes to their showdown.

1. Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal Nightcrawler

Even those who don’t know or are not interested in the character of Mysterio are likely still intrigued by the amazing casting of Jake Gyllenhaal in the role. We’ve seen some amazing actors play Spidey villains, like Willem Dafoe and Michael Keaton, but Gyllenhaal is an unexpected and inspired choice.

Given his movie star status, you’d more expect Gyllenhaal to be headlining a superhero movie rather than playing the villain. He’s continuously shown his amazing range as an actor and is one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars. The fact that he chose to play this guy wearing a fishbowl suggests there must be something special about the role.

Spider-Man & Mysterio Team Up Against Elementals in Far From Home

Actor Tom Holland has said that Spider-Man: Far From Home will see Peter Parker joining forces with the costumed illusionist Mysterio to fight a group of Marvel Comics villains known as The Elementals. This announcement seems doubly perplexing – first because of the filmmakers being decidedly coy about Mysterio being a character in the movie and then because of the relative obscurity of The Elementals, even among comics-readers.

Little has been said about the story of Spider-Man: Far From Home beyond the fact that Peter Parker would somehow go on to survive his apparent death in Avengers: Infinity War. It is speculated, based on the title and the film’s being shot in London, Prague, Liberec and Venice, that the story will center on Peter and his classmates traveling to Europe on some kind of school trip and Spider-Man having to reveal himself to deal with some international criminals. It was also known that Jake Gyllenhaal would be playing a leading role in the film. It has finally been confirmed that he is playing Quentin Beck AKA Mysterio – a special effects artist who turned his talents towards crime.

A report from Tom Holland Source on Twitter (which can be viewed below) suggests that Mysterio’s role in the film might not be so cut and dry. After a screening of the first official trailer for Far From Home at ComicCon Experience 2018 in Brazil, Tom Holland dropped a major bombshell regarding the story of the movie. Rather than being adversaries throughout the picture, Spider-Man and Mysterio will apparently join forces to confront the menace posed by The Elementals.

First appearing in Supernatural Thrillers #8 in August of 1974, The Elementals were a quartet of immortal beings of unknown origin who drew upon the magical powers of the four classic elements. Their ranks included Hydron (Lord of Waters), Magnum (Master of the Earth), Hellfire (Wielder of Flame) and Zephyr (Mistress of The Winds). Originally enemies of The Living Pharaoh and N’Kantu, the Living Mummy, The Elementals would be betrayed by Zephyr and forced to flee the Earth. They would later return and fight Captain Marvel, back in the days when she still went by Ms. Marvel.

At first glance this report seems highly unlikely, particularly given Tom Holland’s reputation for pranking his fans and reporters. Yet what Holland said matches statements made by Jake Gyllenhaal during ComicCon Experience 2018. Gyllenhaal described the movie’s plot and his character’s role in it during a video interview with Brazilian entertainment website, Omelette.

There are these threats to the world, the Elementals, elemental creatures. And Mysterio is someone who knows about them and wants to make sure that the world is safe from them. And Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them. And then he teams up with friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately has to make him become more than a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man

Despite Gyllenhaal confirming Holland’s story, it still seems unlikely that Spider-Man and Mysterio would be able to put up much of a fight against four immortal beings with truly magical powers. It seems a safer bet that The Elementals are all part of a long-con Mysterio has planned to scam SHIELD. Time will tell the truth of it, but this reveal, if true, casts a whole new light on the story of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer Description – Mysterio, Ignores Avengers

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home debuted today at Brazil’s CCXP, and while it hasn’t yet turned up online, descriptions of the trailer have begun appearing across social media. It’s said the trailer avoids mentioning the fallout from Avengers: Infinity War and instead keeps the focus on Spider-Man’s world, ending on a reveal of the costume for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is the first Spidey to be shared between Sony and Marvel Studios, allowing his character to exist as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and headline Sony’s Spider-Man franchise. After being recruited by Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War, this Peter Parker went on to get his first solo film with Spider-Man: Homecoming, skipping most of the usual origin story beats. From there, Holland’s Spider-Man again teamed up with Iron Man and the Avengers in Infinity War, sadly becoming one of the many victims of Thanos’ snap.

Homecoming‘s sequel, however, is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and in order to avoid spoiling that film – and specifically, how Peter Parker is alive again – its trailer doesn’t touch on anything related to Endgame or Thanos. Instead, it sounds as if the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer sticks to all things Spider-Man, not only teasing Mysterio but also hinting at the budding romance between Peter Parker and Michelle “MJ” Jones.

Along with those tweets, Collider‘s Steve Weintraub (who was at the CCXP panel) shared even more details about the Far From Home trailer. He describes it as having the same light-hearted, funny tone as Spider-Man: Homecoming and that the trailer even implies a little flirting between Aunt May and Happy Hogan, which leaves Peter stunned and a little disgusted. Weintraub goes on say that the trailer does reveal Gyllenhaal in his full Mysterio costume minus the helmet, adding that it looks exactly as fans would want it to look. The set-up for the film’s tagline, Far From Home, is also mentioned, with the trailer explaining that Peter and his classmates leave for Europe on a school trip.

The trailer makes a point of showing that Peter chooses not to bring his Spider-Man suit with him on this trip – a decision he’s sure to regret. But rather than being forced to work without it or fashion a new suit from his hotel sheets, the trailer shows Nick Fury paying Peter a visit. We can assume that Fury brings the kid a spare suit – possibly even this stealth suit – since it appears he needs Spider-Man’s help, probably with something Mysterio-related.

Spider-Man: Far From Home releases just a few months after Avengers: Endgame, and considering that Marvel has already begun rolling out trailers for Endgame (and Captain Marvel), the trailer for Far From Home can’t be that far behind. Stay tuned to Screen Rant and we’ll notify you the moment the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer drops online!

Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Jake Gyllenhaal Trolls Fans Over Mysterio Role

Jake Gyllenhaal is trolling fans over his role as Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Marvel Studios and Sony are doing their best to ensure that their new Spider-Man movies are unlike what has come before. This has already been achieved with an actual teenage Peter Parker, diversifying the characters around him, letting him interact with other Marvel heroes, and by using villains who haven’t been on the big screen before.

The latter will remain true with Far From Home as Quentin Beck aka Mysterio is set to be the main villain of the film. Oscar-nominee Jake Gyllenhaal was linked to the role earlier this year, but he was never confirmed to be in the movie, let alone playing the fan-favorite villain. However, Marvel fans have been able to see Mysterio’s wild costume brought to life in a live-action setting through a set video. The tease of the first Far From Home trailer coming soon has only increased excitement over the potential to see Gyllenhaal in action though.

Related: Every Spider-Man: Far From Home Update You Need To Know

Before such a reveal could come, Gyllenhaal joined Instagram to start trolling fans over his Far From Home role as Mysterio. The hilarious video shows Gyllenhaal reading The Amazing Spider-Man #311, acting shocked to learn he is not playing Spider-Man in the movie. Judging by his choice of comic and the framed cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #66 on the wall behind him – both of which feature Mysterio fighting Spidey on the front – this is a fun way for him to finally confirm his role in the movie.

Prior to suiting up to fight Spidey in Far From Home, Gyllenhaal was previously in contention to take over as Spider-Man for Sam Raimi’s original films. Tobey Maguire was on the verge of losing his role as Peter Parker and Gyllenhaal was the choice to take over. This never came to be, and the actor was also rumored to be in the mix to possibly take over as Batman should Ben Affleck leave, but he’s finally got his comic book role now as Mysterio.

Since Far From Home is taking Spidey international and Marvel isn’t afraid to take liberties with stories or characters, it is difficult to say how much these two specific Mysterio issues could factor into the movie. One possibly cool connection that can be made is not with the issue he is holding, but instead the one on the wall. At the end of Amazing Spider-Man #66, Spidey believes he’s shrunk and on a miniaturized carnival set. He then has to fight a giant version of Mysterio in the next issue. The only time set photos and videos saw Spidey and Mysterio on set together was at a carnival, so it is possible that a similar action set piece could be in Far From Home, or at the very least, it will include a nod to it. Either way, now that Gyllenhaal is on social media, hopefully he can deliver a proper look at his true Spider-Man: Far From Home role before too long.

Spider-Man & Nick Fury Go Boating in New Far From Home Set Photo

A brand new Spider-Man: Far From Home set photo features Tom Holland’s headlining hero and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury cruising on a speedboat. Directed by Spider-Man: Homecoming helmsman Jon Watts, the upcoming sequel will be the MCU’s first entry in its still-mysterious Phase 4. Set after the events of Avengers 4, plot details regarding the movie are still being tightly kept under wraps, considering that next year’s Phase 3 culmination will serve as its narrative launching pad. That said, the follow-up will be bigger in scale, with the young hero traveling around Europe with his high school friends for a vacation. But with several bad guys lurking around – like the returning Vulture, Hydro-Man, Chameleon, Molten Man, and the movie’s apparent primary antagonist, Mysterio – it doesn’t seem like he’ll have much downtime.

Both Peter and Fury suffered the same fate in Avengers: Infinity War – snuffed out from existence following Thanos’ deadly snap. But with Avengers 4 expected to bring back most, if not all the heroes who were affected by the galactic genocide, the two will be resurrected one way or another,  thanks to the upcoming efforts of the core Avengers and the help of Ant-Man and Captain Marvel. After the MCU’s crisis at hand is finally resolved, the two (alongside Cobie Smulder’s Maria Hill) will work together to contain a brand new threat in Far From Home.

This latest set photo featuring Spidey and Fury comes courtesy of Twitter user fangirlonloose_. Taken during one of the filming days in Venice, the image features Peter Parker (sporting his arachnid alter-ego’s suit) and the former head of S.H.I.E.LD. cruising on a river aboard a speedboat. Check out the image below:

Far From Home began production in the U.K. back in July, and Venice was the last stop on its European filming leg before returning back to the U.S. to shoot more in New York and Los Angeles. So far, most filming has been done on location, resulting in a slew of set photos that give fans a peek at what the sequel might look like, including a look at Mysterio – supposedly played by Jake Gyllenhaal. A previously leaked video revealed Fury with Maria Hill, but this is the first time that he’s been spotted on the set sharing a scene with Spider-Man.

Not much can be deciphered from the photo, but it appears like Fury came to Spider-Man’s rescue, with the boat functioning as a getaway vessel. It also backs up theories that Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. (or the mysterious organization he’s currently working with) have taken in the young hero, with a separate set image revealing that Peter’s brand new stealth suit could be from the agency. Considering Fury’s now watching out for Peter’s well-being, many are speculating that Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) may bite the bullet in Avengers 4, since he seems to no longer be involved in Peter’s solo missions.  Otherwise, if he’s still alive, it’s odd that Stark wouldn’t have anything to do with his mentee, especially since both Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) are believed to appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

First Glimpse of Mysterio Possibly Revealed in Far From Home Set Video

A new Spider-Man: Far From Home set video offers a possible first glimpse at Mysterio’s costume. Spider-Man had plenty of big screen exposure prior to Tom Holland taking over the role for the MCU. As a result, Kevin Feige has made it clear that Marvel Studios’ focus is on bringing new characters from his universe to theatrical life. This resulted in Michael Keaton playing Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming (who’s returning for the sequel), which also included several other first time villains. The same will happen with Far From Home, as Jake Gyllenhaal has reportedly signed on to play Mysterio.

Mysterio has never been featured before in a live-action setting, and the potential of an actor of Gyllenhaal’s caliber playing the part made many excited. Since the initial reports came, there’s been no news about Mysterio’s inclusion. Despite several leaks from the set, there’s been no looks at Gyllenhaal (who still has yet to confirm his participation) in costume, or even what that costume might look like.

Related: Far From Home Theory: Spider-Woman Is On Fury’s SHIELD Team

Thanks to a new set video for Far From Home shared on Twitter by Martin Knap, the first apparent look at Mysterio’s costume can be seen. He’s to the right of the frame kneeling on the ground. Since the footage is taken from a distance, the video can’t confirm everything about his look, but the basic design appears to be in tact. The green body, purple cape, and even the gold gloves can be picked out by keen eyes. As for the fishbowl head, that’s another story. Check out the video below.

Update: The same Twitter account has since released some closer looks at what appears to be Mysterio. Check them out below.

It’s exciting to finally get to see Mysterio’s costume in live-action, even if the source or quality of the look may not be what many would’ve liked. Still, Marvel looks to be keeping the design faithful to the source material, as they aren’t shying away from the colors or somewhat ridiculous nature of his look. The one difference may be the fishbowl head, as that’s not clearly identifiable in this footage. This could theroetically mean that the bowl will be added digitally so Gyllenhaal doesn’t have to wear it throughout the film, that it’s been knocked off in battle, or that he doesn’t have it at all.

This first look at Mysterio comes in the same location as the recent leaks revealing Peter’s new Spider-Man Noir inspired costume. That costume is shown in the above footage too, as Peter stands tall amidst the destruction in his new look. An interesting aspect to point out are the black cars that rush in as the battle is finished and Mysterio stands up. These may be S.H.I.E.L.D. cars reporting to help Spidey capture his newest foe. Now that this look has surfaced, maybe Marvel and Sony will release an official peek at the film to combat all the leaks. If not, more Spider-Man: Far From Home leaks could soon provide even better looks at Mysterio.
