Elizabeth Olsen Teases 1950s Setting For WandaVision Disney+ Series

Actress Elizabeth Olsen revealed that WandaVision will be set in the ‘50s. Based on the Marvel characters Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch) and Vision, the Disney+ limited series will begin filming in the fall and will reportedly be six hours long. Earlier this month, Disney and Marvel officially announced WandaVision.

In the MCU, Olsen made her franchise debut as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Olsen later reprised the superhero character in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War. In the new MCU film Avengers: Endgame, Olsen will once again reprise her character, along with numerous others who were previously manipulated by the big baddie Thanos. For WandaVision, Olsen will co-star with her MCU love interest Paul Bettany, who will reprise his franchise role as the android Vision. On April 16, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated that WandaVision will intersect with the MCU’s Phase 2 “in a very big way.”

Per Variety, Olsen recently teased WandaVision by revealing that the Disney+ series will take place in ‘50s. This information is based on the streaming platform’s launch chat, with Olsen noting “There’s quite a few other comic books that we’re pulling from and it’s going to be Wanda and the Vision… they showed a photo of us in the ’50s.” For WandaVision, Captain Marvel co-writer Jac Schaeffer will serve as the writer, producer, and showrunner. She also co-wrote the upcoming comedy The Hustle starring Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway, along with the upcoming MCU film Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson in the title role. As for Olsen’s WandaVision co-star Bettany, he previously received a Saturn Award nomination for his supporting performance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Most recently, he portrayed Dryden Vos in Ron Howard’s space western Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Olsen is the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, both of whom famously starred in the late ’80s/early ‘90s ABC sitcom Full House. After delivering an acclaimed performance in 2011’s Martha Marcy May Marlene – her feature film debut – Olsen has since appeared in films like Silent House, Godzilla, and I Saw the Light.

Based on Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU character arc, franchise fans will undoubtedly be curious to see how she’s incorporated into Avengers: Endgame. But, as the saying goes, the writing seems to be on the wall given the existence of WandaVision, and Marvel seemingly has plenty of surprises on the way. Disney+ will also produce a limited series focused on the MCU’s Loki, along with a separate series about Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

All The Mary-Kate And Ashley Olsen Movies Coming To Hulu

During their peak in the late ’90s, The Olsen twins were arguably the most famous child actresses around, starring in widely known films such as It Takes Two, Billboard Dad, Passport to Paris, and Switching Goals as well as numerous direct-to-video movies. The twins also did their fair share of work in television, grabbing starring roles in beloved TV series such as So Little Time, Two of a Kind and animated series Mary-Kate and Ashley in Action!. With their long list of acting credits, along with their ownership of entertainment company Dualstar, its no wonder that the Olsen Twins were some of the wealthiest child stars of their generation.

The Olsen Twins absence from mainstream film and television for many years, along with their formal retirement from acting in 2012, have left many an Olsen fan nostalgic, particularly over their earlier work. Fortunately, streaming service Hulu took on the task of bringing back a few of Mary-Kate and Ashley’s most successful works so that die-hard fans can reminisce over their glory years over and over again. It’s not many, and it’s certainly not their entire back catalog, but these three fan-favorites are definitely worth a nostalgic re-watch. Let’s take a look at each of the Olsen Twin’s movies that are coming to Hulu on May 1.

3 Billboard Dad

In this 1998 classic, Ashley and Mary-Kate star as surfer Emily Tyler and her high-diver twin sister Tess respectively. Set in Los Angeles, California, this film follows the girls as they look to find their widowed Dad a girlfriend. To do so, they team up with their friend Cody to paint a gigantic advertisement on a billboard looming over Sunset Boulevard for everyone to see (hence the title of the film).

Surprisingly enough, this billboard attracts the attention of many women throughout the city, who answer the twins’ call by sending letters to their dad, Max, who himself is a talented artist. As chance would have it, Max decides to answer the letter of one woman, and this is the moment from when all the action ensues. The twins come across a range of more interesting characters including the lucky woman’s best friend, who may just yet be a better fit for Max, as well as her unbearable son and Max’s conniving business manager.

While not a critical success, this film is easy going with its fair share of laughs and zany interactions between characters. It is also family friendly, having received a “Family-Approved” rating from the Dove Foundation.

2 Passport To Paris

Released only a year after the above title, this film follows yet another set of twins, Melanie and Allyson Porter, who travel all the way to Paris for their Spring Break vacation. Here, their parents hope that the girls will learn to broaden their outlooks on life by spending time with their Grandpa Edward, the United States’ ambassador to France.

While the girls expected a thrilling trip with non-stop action, they were soon disappointed, with their Grandpa putting them in the care of his stern secretary Jeremy, who lives by a strict itinerary which includes only taking the girls to museums and fancy restaurants rather than exploring the city as they wished. To make matters worse, Melanie and Allyson must adhere to strict rules whilst living in their grandfather’s mansion, including not jumping on the bed and no loud music – and who wants that on Spring Break?

This lifestyle certainly does not sit well with the girls, who soon embark on their own adventure in what proves to be a trip of a lifetime, in which they befriend a beautiful French model, catch the eye of two charming French boys, and of course soak up the sights and sounds of the breathtaking city that is Paris.

This film was able to receive a better reception than that of Billboard Dad, and is an enjoyable thrill ride that all nostalgic Olsen twins fans can enjoy regardless of age.

1 Switching Goals

Released just a month after Passport to Paris, this film centers on yet another set of identical twins; which isn’t too surprising. After all, playing twins is pretty much the Olsen twins’ schtick! This film focuses on the Stanton sisters, who are incredibly different from one another. Sam is a tomboy and star soccer player while Emma is incredibly girly and loves fashion, however, Emma wishes that she too was good at sports like her sister. (The ’90s was definitely a fan of playing up the sports vs girly girl stereotypes.)

With the youth soccer league tournament underway, the girls’ dad Jerry is coach of the Hurricanes co-ed team, and picks Emma for this team due to pressure from his wife and the girls’ mother Denise. His selection of Emma allowed rival team, the Buzzards, to select Sam, much to Jerry’s dismay.

Jerry is not the only one disappointed at this outcome, however, as while Sam is disappointed to be joining a weaker team, Emma finds life incredibly difficult due to being under constant pressure from her father. For this reason, the girls switch places so that they can better their situations, with Sam learning to share the spotlight with others while Emma is afforded the chance to bond with her father more than ever before.

While the plot may seem somewhat cheesy, this is a charming and endearing film that surely captured the hearts of movie-goers who eventually became fans of the Olsen twins, and helped stir up the demand that prompted Hulu to come up with the decision to provide the above three films to their many subscribers today. Who doesn’t love a good twin-switch movie from time to time?

Here’s hoping that Hulu gets to stream a whole lot more of the Olsen twins’ ’90s classics soon.

Avengers 4 Reshoots: Tom Holland Traveled to Atlanta Earlier This Week

Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) flew to Atlanta earlier this week, presumably to join the ongoing Avengers 4 reshoots. Starting last month, additional work for the Marvel Studios blockbuster has been going on for several weeks now, with some actors coming back to the set to finish their respective parts. The latest update from the set came from Chris Evans, who announced he had wrapped up with an emotional social media post.

Not much is known regarding the movie, especially since Marvel Studios has been actively trying to keep any kind of information about it tightly under wraps. The reshoots are mainly being done inside a sound stage, so no set photos have come out since the first batch last month. However, since news of actors coming and going in Atlanta tends to make its way online, fans at least know the characters (aside from those who survived Thanos’ snap) appearing in the film, like Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis. The latest MCU cast member to apparently join the reshoots is Holland.

A Twitter user with the handle goldenclosetboy shared an image of Holland on a flight from Atlanta to New York on October 5, giving fans the impression that the actor was in town to participate in the ongoing reshoots for Avengers 4. Holland – who’s also in the middle of filming Spider-Man: Far From Home – had just come back in the U.S. to continue shooting the Phase 4 film, following months of production around Europe. And while Spider-Man: Homecoming filmed at Pinewood Atlanta back in 2016, its sequel isn’t scheduled to use the facility, further backing up the idea he was in town for Avengers 4. Check out the photo below.

It’s uncertain in what capacity the currently dead MCU heroes will be involved in Avengers 4. While Thanos claimed that the genocide would be random, Marvel Studios brilliantly picked out the original Avengers and several important supporting characters to survive the purge, giving them one last mission before some (or most of them) bid goodbye to the franchise. Heroes like Captain America and Black Widow who didn’t have much to do in Avengers: Infinity War are expected to play a pivotal part in the Phase 3 capper, and chances are that the focus of the film will be on the principal heroes.

Having said that, Avengers 4 is both the end to a 22-film arc, and the beginning of a new one, so fans can expect that there will be some sort of passing of the baton between the MCU’s old guard and new faces. Considering that Spider-Man is Iron Man’s protege – with Stark playing the role of Peter’s mentor since his introduction in Captain America: Civil War – a reunion between the two is a fitting way to end Iron Man’s arc should he die in the upcoming film, and a great setup for Peter’s future journey as a superhero.

Robert Downey Jr. Responds to Chris Evans’ Emotional Captain America Thank You Letter

Robert Downey Jr. has responded to Chris Evans’ Captain America thank you letter, in which the latter reflected on wrapping Avengers 4. The two actors are currently in Atlanta, where reshoots for the upcoming Marvel film are taking place. Besides Downey and Evans, other actors – including Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, Paul Rudd and Scarlett Johansson, and Elizabeth Olsen and Pom Klementieff – have all been spotted on set. Reshoots began in September. According to Mark Ruffalo, these reshoots will “finish the movie,” rather than just fixing scenes or adding additional lines.

These last days on set are sure to be an emotional period for the cast. Many of them have been playing these characters since MCU Phase 1, and have worked together onscreen almost as long. The original Avengers are so close they even got matching tattoos. Saying goodbye at the end of filming is sure to be bittersweet, as for some, it’ll be for the last time. Evans posted a tweet commemorating his wrap on Avengers 4, and saying what an honor playing Steven Rogers had been. Of course, this caused the MCU fandom to break down as well, believing that this seals Cap’s Avengers 4 fate. Regardless of if the character lives or dies, the film will most likely be the end of the line for Evans, whose contract is up.

Robert Downey Jr. subsequently responded to Evans’ emotional tweet with one of his own. He posted: “We all know who the real sheriff in town is“, with an image of Woody and Buzz from Toy Story. Buzz is dressed in Iron Man armor, while Woody is decked out in red, white, and blue Captain America regalia. The poster reads, “To Infinity War and Beyond” a cute nod to both the Avengers: Infinity War title and the saying from the animated Pixar film. Check out the tweet and image below.

Update: Chris Evans has since responded to RDJ’s response. Check it out below.

Iron Man and Captain America have been mainstays of the MCU since 2008 and 2011, respectively. The actors have become as iconic as the characters they play, and oftentimes it’s hard to draw a line between the two. It’s almost impossible to imagine the movies without either of these characters, but it’s a reality Marvel fans are slowly realizing they’re going to have to face very soon.

Avengers 4 will mark both a beginning and an end of sorts. While it’s likely time to say goodbye to actors like Evans and Downey Jr., the next round of MCU movies will also usher in a new era of characters. Heroes like Captain Marvel, Shuri, Black Panther, and Valkyrie will step up to take the place of the fallen or retired. The future of Marvel Studios is in good hands.

Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Hiddleston, & Original MCU Actors Will Star in Streaming TV Shows

Marvel Studios is heading to Disney’s streaming service, and major MCU stars are coming with them. Kevin Feige has built Marvel Studios to become one of the biggest companies in Hollywood, as they’re responsible for arguably the biggest franchise in the world. This success has spurned copycats, but also interest within Marvel to piggyback off the hits. Marvel TV continues to make content on ABC, Netflix, Freeform, and Hulu that are loosely connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by the movies.

Well, now Marvel Studios is going to the small screen with planned limited series’ for Scarlet Witch and Loki. These live-action shows will be part of the MCU canon, and be made with massive budgets that rival most movies. This won’t just be to pay for quality VFX and sets, but also for the major talent that will star in them.

As part of Variety‘s report that broke the news of Disney and Marvel’s intentions, they confirmed that MCU actors will be reprising their roles for these spinoffs. With Scarlet Witch and Loki being two of the known projects in development, that means Elizabeth Olsen and Tom Hiddleston will each return in this new capacity.

Doing MCU limited series is one thing, but actually managing to get the necessary talent back is another. Both Olsen and Hiddleston are big stars in Hollywood, but Marvel appears ready to pay up to secure their services. It also shows an interest by these actors to continue playing these characters, regardless of what medium it comes in. Hiddleston was thought to have said goodbye to Loki during Avengers: Infinity War‘s opening few minutes, while Olsen was one of the many MCU actors to be dusted in the closing moments. Both will now return to their roles in the future.

Despite their stardom, Olsen and Hiddleston have both ventured to TV recently. Hiddleston received critical praise for his role in AMC’s The Night Manager, where he starred opposite fellow MCU cast member Elizabeth Debicki. Meanwhile, Olsen’s next project is actually a TV series as well. She stars in Facebook’s series Sorry for Your Loss with Kelly Marie Tran, so this looks to be a return to an online platform for her. With Olsen and Hiddleston both coming back for Disney’s streaming service, the same will be expected for any other limited series Marvel is planning. So, no matter what series eventually hits the platform, the established actors will be the ones to star.

Sorry for Your Loss Trailer: Elizabeth Olsen & Kelly Marie Tran Are Grieving Sisters

Facebook Watch has released a new trailer for their upcoming original series Sorry For Your Loss, which is slated to debut Tuesday, September 18. The footage comes just days after it was announced that this new series will get a special premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where the first four episodes will screen as part of the festival’s Primetime showcase, where Amazon’s Homecoming, starring Julia Roberts, will also screen its first four episodes. While Sorry For Your Loss won’t be the first series to debut under the Facebook Watch platform, it may have the highest profile, with well-known stars and filmmakers bringing this show to life.

Facebook Watch launched in August 2017 with its first show, Strangers, starring Zoe Chao and Meredith Hagner, debuting a month later. Facebook Watch debuted four new drama shows this year; SKAM Austin, Five Points, Sacred Lies and Turnt, along with a number of news programs like Fox News Update and Anderson Cooper Full Circle, and docuseries shows, such as Ball in the Family and Bill Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray’s Extra Innings. Facebook Watch is clearly trying to produce a vast array of programs that run the gamut from different genres, and with a premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival next month, Sorry For Your Loss could very well bring this nascent streaming service to the next level.

The Sorry For Your Loss trailer debuted on Facebook Watch earlier today, which focuses on Elizabeth Olsen’s character Leigh, an advice columnist whose life is upended when her husband Matt (Mamoudou Athie) is suddenly killed. The show follows her journey as she begins the grieving process, with the help of her sister Jules (Kelly Marie Tran), who is also struggling with her own demons as a recovering drug addict, her mother Amy (Janet McTeer) and Matt’s brother Danny (Jovan Adepo). As Leigh starts to clean out the home she once shared with her husband, she begins to realize there were many secrets her husband was keeping from her during his time on Earth.

The series was originally set up at Showtime, written on spec by playwright Kit Steinkellner, before Facebook Watch issued a 10-episode, straight-to-series order just over six months ago, in early February. Lizzy Weiss (Switched At Birth) came aboard to serve as the showrunner, with James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) serving as executive producer, and directing the first four episodes of the series. The remaining four episodes were directed by Allison Anders, Jessica Wu, Hannah Fidell, Azazel Jacobs, Rose Troche and Jamie Babbit.

Sorry For Your Loss could be a breakout hit for the nascent Facebook Watch streaming service, but it also represents another example of how once-distinct genres of drama and comedy are melding in the world of television. The show is billed as a “drama” on IMDB and a “dark comedy” on Wikipedia, but regardless of genre, it’s the latest “half-hour drama” to debut, like Starz’s hit Vida. While it will likely take quite some time for broadcast networks to embrace a half-hour drama, or even a one-hour comedy series, shows like this continue to push the envelope and advance the medium further than most cookie-cutter broadcast shows can.
