BREAKING: Janhvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena set for an Independence Day release on Netflix – Details

On June 9, Karan Johar announced that his next film with Janhvi Kapoor, the biopic of Kargil War Hero, Gunjan Saxena will be a direct to digital release owing to the on-going coronavirus pandemic. A source close to the producer revealed that the decision was taken to keep the cash-flows in the coming rolling, as they were offered a massive amount by Netflix. Bollywood Hungama has exclusively learnt that the war drama is gearing up for an Independence Day release.

“It’s as patriotic a story as it gets and everyone associated with the film feels that August 15 is the best date for the film release. The idea is to pay tribute to the Indian Air Force Pilot, Gunjan Saxena, the first female to go on combat. A theatrical trailer of the film is being prepared right now and will be unveiled within the next 10 days,” revealed a source close to the development.

The source further revealed that the makers were contemplating multiple dates for the film’s release, including the Kargil Diwas on July 26. “But the post production has taken longer than expected and hence they had to delay the film by a couple of weeks. There is a possibility of the film’s trailer hitting the digital world on July 26, thereby being a fitting tribute,” the source added.

Apart from Janhvi Kapoor, the film also features Pankaj Tripathi in a pivotal role of Gunjan’s father. “The dynamic shared by the two is among the major highlights of the film, and the ones who have seen the rushes can’t stop raving about the underlying emotions in the father daughter relationship.” The film was shot extensively in Lucknow and Georgia, apart from some patchwork in Mumbai. It marks the directorial debut of Sharan Sharma and Karan has got his studio partner in Zee Studios. Stay tuned for more exclusive updates on Bollywood Hungama.

REVEALED: These films are expected to be announced for direct release on Netflix on July 16!

With the Coronavirus cases increasing day by day, the chances of cinema halls opening anytime soon also appear slim. Though the exhibitors are putting up pressure and inside reports state that theatres should start next month or latest by September, the Bollywood filmmakers, it seems, have lost patience. A couple of weeks back, the exhibitors got a jolt when as many as 7 films were announced as direct-to-OTT release, on Disney+ Hotstar. And now, they are in for a far bigger shock. The worldwide streaming giant Netflix is now all set to release its list of Bollywood films, which were originally supposed to release in cinemas, but will now arrive straightaway on their platform. The announcement is expected to be made on July 16, that is, two days from now.

Bollywood Hungama has exclusively got hold of the tentative list and as many as 9 films are expected to be announced. A source says, “The list is tentative but mostly, these are the films that will be unveiled as Netflix originals to the media on the 16th.” These movies are as follows:

1. Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare

Earlier in the day, Bollywood Hungama had revealed that this flick is releasing on Netflix. Starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar, it is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, who earlier made the acclaimed 2017 flick Lipstick Under My Burkha.

2. Torbaaz

It stars Sanjay Dutt and Nargis Fakhri and was one of the first or probably the first Hindi film to be shot in Kyrgyzstan. Directed by Girish Malik, it is set in the Afghanistan city of Kabul and deals with the issue of child suicide bombers. Interestingly, its producer Rahul Mittra had, in March 2020, assured that the film would hit cinemas in October.

3. Ginny Weds Sunny

Directed by debutant director Puneet Khanna and produced by Vinod Bachchan of Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017) fame, this romcom stars Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam. It was shot in real-life locations in Delhi and also in places like Ghaziabad, Noida, Karnal and Manali. The light-hearted flick is about Ginny and Sunny, who meet for a marital alliance, but she rejects him. Sunny then teams up with the mother, who becomes his love guru, and they together try to woo Ginny.

4. Indoo Ki Jawani

Starring Kiara Advani and Aditya Seal, this Nikkhil Advani production is about a feisty girl from Ghaziabad whose bizarre experience on a dating app results in a comedy of errors. This will be Kiara’s second Netflix film after the Karan Johar-produced Guilty, which was released in March this year.

5. Ludo

It is supposed to be in the Life In A… Metro (2007) zone, which like Ludo, is also directed by Anurag Basu. The ensemble star cast includes Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra and Pankaj Tripathi.

6. Raat Akeli Hai

Netflix and Radhika Apte are like a match made in heaven. Hence, it’s no surprise that one of the films in the slate also includes a Radhika Apte-starrer. Raat Akeli Hai also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shweta Tripathi, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Ila Arun and Swanand Kirkire and marks the directorial debut of casting director Honey Trehan. As per reports, this crime thriller is set in the Uttar Pradesh of 1980s, and is about the journey of a man from a rookie cop to an experienced police officer.

7. The Girl On The Train

It is the official remake of the Hollywood film of the same name and stars Parineeti Chopra, Aditi Rao Hydari, Kirti Kulhari and Avinash Tiwary. Directed by Ribhu Dasgupta, it has been extensively shot in United Kingdom.

8. Anurag Kashyap’s next with Alaya F

This flick is reportedly titled Project 10 and is directed and produced by Anurag Kashyap. Shot extensively in UK, it stars Pooja Bedi’s daughter Alaya F, who earlier this year, made her debut with Saif Ali Khan-starrer Jawaani Jaaneman. Anurag has described the film as a ‘young love story’.

9. Ak vs AK

The title is actually a play on the initials of its lead actors – Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor. It is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and is based on a brash film director who kidnaps the daughter of a well-known movie star. Anil’s son Harsh Varrdhan will also be seen in the film in a cameo. This is the only film in the list which was always going to release directly on Netflix and was never intended for a theatrical run.

The source signs off by saying, “Netflix has also backed Dibakar Banerjee’s Manisha Koirala-starrer Freedom and Karan Johar’s The Other (tentative title) and it’s not sure however if these films will also be included in the slate. There’s a slim chance that all films out of these might not make it on the list but one thing is for sure – the announcement is sure to grab eyeballs. Watch out.”

Salman Khan won’t go to OTT; would not even consider doing a webseries

While the OTT premiere of the Amitabh Bachchan – Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Gulabo Sitabo has been met with mixed feelings, there is no doubt that the A-listers are determined to stay away  from the digital platform.

Salman Khan won't go to OTT; would not even consider doing a webseries

Salman Khan, who has two  films in different stages of production and a third script all set to go into production, is the only Khan superstar who needs to worry about his film going/not going on the  OTT platform. And Salman (being Salman) is not the least bothered.

A very close producer-filmmaker friend reveals why Salman is unperturbed.  “Bhai’s films can’t/won’t go to digital. His fans won’t allow it. They don’t want to see his films anywhere except on the large screen. None of his producers would even think of it. As it is, his two films underproduction Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai and Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali are produced by Salman himself. Even the third film, he has scripted during the lockdown is his own productions. His films won’t release on the digital platform.”

Forget his films going digital, Salman is not even considering doing a web-series even though his fellow-A-listers Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan have succumbed to the  temptation of accepting the zeroes on the cheque.

So for now, it is Salman Khan on the big screen only. Among, the other Khans from the superstar triumvirate Aamir has the incomplete Laal Singh Chaddha while Shah Rukh Khan has no films on and.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara has a Karan Johar connect

The theatrical trailer of Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara released yesterday and as expected, it has created a record of sorts. A remake of the 2014 Hollywood tearjerker The Fault In Our Stars, this Mukesh Chhabra directorial amassed 4.3 million likes on YouTube in less than 24 hours, thus beating the feat held by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame’s trailers. A lot of love has poured out for the actor after his untimely death on June 14 this year. That this would be his final film has made Dil Bechara all the more special.

Sadly, this social media discussion about the actor has also got quite toxic. A large section of netizens began blaming the ‘nepotistic nature’ of Bollywood for his death. Karan Johar, who unfortunately is seen as the poster boy of nepotism in Bollywood, was heavily slammed along with other star kids of Bollywood. The trolling is immense and continues even after three weeks of Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise.

However, what many viewers are not aware of is that Dil Bechara has a Karan Johar connection as well. The dialogues of this film are written by Shashank Khaitan, who started his career as a writer with Karan’s Dharma Productions. He had no filmi connections and his first film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was greenlighted by KJo. Starring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, it was one of the most loved films of 2014. His next flick, Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), also starring Varun and Alia, too worked big time. This was followed by Dhadak (2018), an official remake of the Marathi classic Sairat (2016) and also the launch pad of Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. He was also one of the producers of the 2019 super-duper hit comedy Good Newwz and that of 2020 horror flick BHOOT: Part One – The Haunted Ship. He’s the only director among many directors launched by Dharma to have graduated to being a producer.

Incidentally, exactly two years ago, in the second week of July 2018, Dil Bechara was officially announced. It was then called Kizie Aur Manny. Rucha Pathak, Chief Creative Officer, Fox Star Studios, in a press statement at that time had said, “We’re especially happy that the script that we’ve been developing over the last few years is seeing the start of shoot and the title itself has come so organically from the Indian characters in the film. Kizie and Manny are characters from the imagination of Suprotim Sengupta who wrote the screenplay and Shashank Khaitan who gave them wonderful voices through his dialogues. Mukesh now is going to bring them to life”.

Dil Bechara will be released directly on Disney+ Hotstar on July 24. Moreover, it’ll be available for free viewing for non-subscribers as well.

SCOOP: Varun Dhawan’s Coolie No 1 to release in theatres; WON’T take the OTT route?

It’s been more than a month that speculations have been going arund that some of the most awaited films of the year would be straight away released on one of the biggest streaming platforms, Disney+ Hotstar. And finally, tomorrow, that is, June 29 is the day when the announcement in this regard will be made. This was confirmed by Disney+ Hotstar itself when they put up an image mentioning that they’ll make the coveted announcement tomorrow evening at 4:30 PM IST in a star studded online event. A picture of the stars who’ll attend the event was also published and these were Alia Bhatt, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan and Varun Dhawan.

As soon as this announcement was uploaded, many eyebrows were raised especially about the presence of Varun in the said image. It led to speculations that his next film, Coolie No 1, is also arriving on OTT directly. His fans were disheartened as Coolie No 1 is a masala comic caper and have chances of working in theatres. The last few films of his haven’t worked. Hence they were banking on Coolie No 1‘s theatrical release as it would have got Varun back in the big league. Sadly, the OTT speculations of its release disheartened them.

However, it turns out that Coolie No 1 is not skipping theatrical release. A source says, “As per the information that we have got, Coolie No 1 is not releasing on Disney+ Hotstar. Varun’s picture has been published alongside the others as he’s going to host the event.”

The source further adds, “Coolie No 1 is directed by Varun’s father David Dhawan who strongly believes in theatrical release. He would not let Coolie No 1 arrive on a streaming platform.” He also however cautions, “If, at the last moment, Coolie No 1 makers have made a deal for online release, then we don’t know. But that’s unlikely.”

Shedding more light on this event, the source reveals, “The event will also be attended by Uday Shankar, President, The Walt Disney Company (Asia Pacific) and Chairman, Star & Disney India. An announcement would be made of films that will arrive on Disney+ Hotstar, starting July 24 when Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara. Every Friday will then see a new film arriving on the platform. Some of the films that will be announced are Akshay Kumar’s horror comedy Laxmmi Bomb, Ajay Devgn’s patriotic actioner Bhuj – The Pride Of India, Alia Bhatt-starrer Sadak 2, and Abhishek Bachchan’s stock market saga The Big Bull. Besides, Kunal Kemmu’s comedy Lootcase and Vidyut Jammwal’s romantic actioner Khuda Hafiz are also expected to be announced.”

Hotstar-Disney rents Ramoji Film City for 3 years

For those film crews in Bollywood contemplating a move to Hyderabad’s sprawling Ramoji film City, there is some disappointing news. Apparently the affluent Hotstar-Disney organization, has rented the entire Ramoji film city for the next three years thereby putting an unofficial embargo on any other film unit desirous of shooting at the vast premise, said to be the world’s largest film city.

Hotstar-Disney rents Ramoji Film City for 3 years

Star and Hotstar were acquired by the Disney label in 2019. The merger makes Hotstar one of the most powerful OTT creators in the Asian subcontinent. By reserving India’s biggest film city for three years Hotstar intends to ensure an advantageous venue for manufacturing an incessant flow of content for consumption in these parts.

No wonder the movie theatre business seems noticeably threatened by the resources and reach of the digital manufacturers.

SCOOP: Vidyut Jammwal-starrer Khuda Hafiz to directly release on Disney+ Hotstar?

Vidyut Jammwal ended 2019 on a fair note as his film Commando 3 emerged as a box office hit. On television, it is faring very well and the success of this flick gave him box office credibility. His next film, Khuda Hafiz, however, won’t release in cinemas, and would directly arrive on the streaming platform, Disney+ Hotstar, if reports are to be believed.

Since the coronavirus-induced lockdown was announced on March 24, cinema halls have been shut. Although there are murmurs that the government will allow theatres to resume operations in July, the industry fears that viewers might not come out in large numbers to see films. With the indefinite postponement of films, producers began to feel the heat as it led to increase of costs. Hence, when many producers were approached by OTT giants, they decided to accept their offers for a direct release on the internet.

A source says, “The producers of Khuda Hafiz, Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, too were approached. Initially, they decided to wait but when they realized that the lockdown has been extended and it’ll take a while until viewers will come fearlessly to cinemas in large numbers, they decided to discuss the offer with Disney+ Hotstar. Once they reached a consensus and agreed to the price given, they sold their film to the streaming giant.” An announcement is expected soon, adds the source.

Khuda Hafiz was launched in April 2019 as a romantic action film. Besides Vidyut Jammwal, it also stars Aahana Kumra and Shivaleeka Oberoi. Directed by Allah Ke Banday (2010) director Faruk Kabir, it is based on a real incident of a man fighting to get his wife back from a Middle-Eastern country. The film had made news last year as it was a rare Bollywood project to be shot in Uzbekistan.
