Crazy Rich Asians Is Highest-Grossing Rom-Com This Decade (So Far)

Wildly successful romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians looks to be leader of the pack in box office receipts for the decade. It’s been roughly two months in theaters since its mid-August release, and the runaway hit adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling book has handily outsold every other rom-com in the 2010s, and yet remains in theaters at time of this writing.

Crazy Rich Asians broke early ticket sales records from its premiere, dominating the box office for three straight weekends with no signs of slowing down. The film stars Constance Wu ( Fresh Off the Boat ) in the leading role, alongside veteran Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Star Trek: Discovery) and rising star Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8), among others. Directed by filmmaker Jon M. Chu, Crazy Rich Asians’ immediate success followed positive early buzz, making its opening weekend the biggest rom-com opening since 2015’s Trainwreck.

Related: Crazy Rich Asians’ Michelle Yeoh & Awkwafina Reunite For Action Film

That early attention simply did not waver, and the film has seen eight solid weekends of consistent sales thus far, placing in top 10 tickets sold in the first weekend of October. That momentum has seemingly secured its legacy, and, according to Box Office Mojo (via Screen Crush), Crazy Rich Asians as the sixth-highest grossing romantic-comedy of all-time at the domestic box office, with over $169 million in sales, which also makes it the highest grossing rom-com of the decade.

This news makes reports of the imminent sequel, which arrived a mere week after opening weekend, seem particularly wise on the part of Warner Bros. Titled China Rich Girlfriend, the sequel is based on the follow-up novel of the same name, and will push the story presented in the original forward. Limited information about the sequel is available at present – and there’s considerable speculation as to plot details when weighing the changes made in the Crazy Rich Asians adaptation – but the director and writers are expected to return.

Aside from its profitable reign in theaters, Crazy Rich Asians was notable as the first Hollywood studio film with primarily Asian-American leads since 1993’s award-winning The Joy Luck Club. News of the sequel aside, this distinction may have spearheaded a new trend, and Warner Bros./New Line’s recently-acquired Singles Day may represent increased trust being placed in Asian-American actors and actresses to draw audiences to theaters.

For now, Crazy Rich Asians continues its run in theaters across the country, and a mere $7 million more will see it crack the top five romantic comedies and outsell 1998’s There’s Something About Mary.

Update: Corrected the filmography of Constance Wu.

Dwayne Johnson & Netflix Team Up For John Henry Movie

Dwayne Johnson and Netflix are teaming up on a folklore-inspired film titled John Henry and the Statesmen. This will mark the first collaboration between The Rock and the streaming giant, as well as the third project overall for Johnson and director Jake Kasdan. The latter duo previously joined creative forces on 2017’s smash box office hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and will reunite to begin shooting Jumanji 3 near the end of this year.

In addition to joining lucrative properties like Jumanji and Fast & Furious, Johnson has spent the last ten years expanding his “brand” to encompass everything from movie adaptations based on a variety of IPs (ex. video games, popular toylines) to original ventures (like this summer’s Skyscraper) and even his own HBO TV series in the form of Ballers. Interestingly enough though, The Rock really stepped up his franchise-building efforts a few years ago, around the same time that Netflix started to ramp up its own original movie and TV show content production. As such, it was probably inevitable that the pair would eventually find a project that they could develop together.

Related: First Look at The Rock’s Fast & Furious Spinoff Hobbs and Shaw

Per Netflix’s press release, Johnson will star in John Henry and the Statesman as the eponymous steel-driver and lead “an ensemble cast of the most popular figures from folklore and legend from all around the world” in the film. You can check out the teaser for the movie below, along with The Rock’s comments on what the John Henry folk story means to him, personally.

John Henry is based on a pitch that Johnson and his Seven Bucks Production team developed with screenwriter Tom Wheeler, who will (naturally) further write the movie’s script. Wheeler is already in the Netflix business, as it were, and is serving as the showrunner for the company’s upcoming Frank Miller-backed TV series Cursed (an origin story for the Lady of the Lake, essentially). The writer is also far from a stranger to fairy tales and legends, having previously written the Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots – among other films with broad, crowd-pleasing appeal.

Indeed, “crowd-pleasing” is the name of the game for Johnson and there’s fair reason to believe that he will deliver the goods again with John Henry, especially if the results of his efforts on Jumanji with Kasdan are any indicator. Moreover, John Henry is another movie that (like his upcoming Kamehameha biopic The King) is something of a passion project that holds a personal meaning to Johnson, by the sound of it. Good things tend to happen when The Rock really pours his heart and soul into his productions, so that certainly bodes well for his very first Netflix movie.

And, of course, if the film is a success, then don’t be surprised if Johnson and Netflix try to turn this one into a full-blown superhero-style franchise revolving around popular folklore figures from around the world.

Doctor Who: Biggest Questions After Jodie Whittaker’s First Episode

Warning! SPOILERS for the Doctor Who season 11 premiere ahead!

The new season of Doctor Who finally arrived and now the world has had their first taste of Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor. The episode, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” is exciting, scary, action-packed, and surprisingly emotional – all the elements that make up a great Doctor Who episode. It’s a brand new era for the 50+ year-old sci-fi series, and it’s only just getting started.

Along with a new Doctor, there’s a whole new cast of characters joining Whitaker on the adventure. This cast is also the most diverse cast Doctor Who has ever had, which feels like the right choice for this new era of Who, and that diversity exists both on screen and off, with season 11 including the first writers of color in the show’s history. For a television series that can go anywhere and do just about anything, it’s about time Doctor Who began branching out and including new voices.

Now that the world has seen the 13th Doctor’s first episode and gotten a taste of the show’s new direction, we have a few questions that we’re very interested to see answered in the upcoming season.

  • This Page: Why Did the TARDIS Abandon The Doctor?
  • Page 2: How Powerful Is The New Sonic Screwdriver?

Why Did The TARDIS Abandon The Doctor?

When the Doctor began regenerating from 12 into 13, the TARDIS also began to change. The console room exploded and the Doctor went tumbling out the doors. As she fell to Earth, the Doctor could only watch as the TARDIS dematerialized – abandoning her. And while the TARDIS is known to be a temperamental old thing, it doesn’t usually strand the Doctor without good reason. So where has it gone? And why?

The next episode of Doctor Who will probably reveal where the TARDIS ended up, but it could be a little while before we get a full explanation for why it disappeared in the first place. One reason might be that the TARDIS simply doesn’t care for this new version of the Doctor. As far as we know, this is the first time the Doctor has regenerated into a woman. Maybe the TARDIS just doesn’t recognize her? Or is more fond of men? Those would be rather silly explanations for why the TARDIS acted the way it did, but they aren’t entirely out of the realm of possibility.

It’s more likely, however, that the TARDIS is malfunctioning. This could be happening either as a result of the regeneration (the TARDIS also went haywire when 10 regenerated into 11) or because it’s been tampered with somehow. Whatever the reason, it’ll be up to The Doctor to reunite with her TARDIS, and in doing so, the show may just reveal more about the special bond between The Doctor and her best traveling companion.

Page 2: How Powerful Is The New Sonic Screwdriver?

How Powerful Is The New Sonic Screwdriver?

The 13th Doctor isn’t only without her TARDIS in the Doctor Who season 11 premiere – she’s also without her trusty sonic screwdriver. But the Doctor is very clever, and a bit of tinkerer. With a few parts from an alien transportation pod and some Sheffield steel, she constructs her own sonic screwdriver. Well, it’s more than a screwdriver, as fans already know, but with her building her sonic screwdriver instead of receiving one from the TARDIS we have to wonder… how is it different from previous screwdivers?

In the episode, the screwdriver already appears to have a few short circuits, sparking when the Doctor first reveals it. But then, as the episode continues, it more or less performs it’s job as it should. So will the fact that this screwdriver is handcrafted from arguably lesser quality materials than a typical sonic device (sorry Sheffield steel, you just aren’t that high tech) affect how powerful it is? And more importantly, will this screwdriver work on wood?

Who Will Rescue The Doctor?

At the end of the episode, as the Doctor is attempting to transport herself to the planet where her TARDIS wound up, she manages to send not just herself but Ryan, Yaz, and Graham as well. And she doesn’t actually transport them to a planet, but rather into outer space, where they’re left floating in the vacuum.

Of course, the previews for next week’s episode already reveal they’ll be rescued, but by who? The obvious guess is that it’s the other people seen on the planet in that preview. Their outfits  appear to be space suits or a uniform, suggesting they’re a crew of some sort. They may also be military, which isn’t going to sit well with the Doctor at all. Just how they rescue The Doctor and her new companions from an icy death in space remains to be seen, but perhaps the bigger question we should be asking is – why were they transported to space in the first place?

The Doctor said the signal came from the TARDIS, but there is no TARDIS where they are. And though initially it appeared as if the TARDIS abandoned the Doctor, maybe it was actually stolen? A stolen TARDIS isn’t the same as it being lost, and it would mean someone is trying to keep the Doctor away from it – in which case, season 11 might see the Doctor searching the galaxy for her TARDIS. It’s a little unlikely given that the reveal of a new TARDIS interior is almost as big of a deal as a new Doctor, but it would be an interesting twist on the typical formula. And besides, it isn’t as if the Doctor hasn’t been without their TARDIS before.

Terminator 6: Arnold Schwarzenegger & Linda Hamilton Reunite in New Photo

Arnold Schwarzenegger shared a new photo of him and Linda Hamilton from the set of Terminator 6. After spending years away from the Terminator franchise, James Cameron is returning to produce the latest installment in the series which is said to ignore everything that followed his 1991 seminal film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day – that means Terminator 3, Terminator Salvation, and Terminator: Genisys. By doing so, Cameron is looking to give fans a proper continuation of the story he shepherded.

In next year’s installment, which is being directed by Deadpool‘s Tim Miller, with a story by Miller, Cameron, and David Ellison, Schwarzenegger will reprise his role as the iconic T-800 and reunite with Hamilton’s Sarah Connor. It will be the first time that Hamilton will appear in a Terminator film since the 1991 sequel, and fans got a first look at her character, Sarah Connor, as well as some of the new stars, in a recent photo that included Natalia Reyes as Dani Ramos and Mackenzie Davis as Grace. But now they get to see the original franchise stars return in yet another photo.

To commemorate Linda Hamilton’s birthday today, Arnold Schwarzenegger posted a photo of the two of them online from the set of Terminator 6. Along with the new photo is another one of them from several years ago, but almost in the same pose. It’s certainly something that will make fans feel nostalgic as well as excited about the new movie, which is still in production and likely will be for quite some time. Take a look at the photo:

This project comes on the heels of Paramount Pictures initially shelving plans for Terminator 6 and Terminator 7, which would’ve followed the story established in 2015’s installment. Unfortunately, considering the critical and commercial failure of that movie, it isn’t all too surprising that the studio wanted to move away from that story arc and return to the one that originally got audiences on board with this franchise. Plus, having Cameron on board in a creative role only further increased interest, which arguably peaked when it was revealed the two original stars would be returning.

Terminator 6 – a sequel that may receive another title closer to release – was originally slated to hit theaters in summer 2019 but was recently pushed to November of that year – November 15, to be specific. While it’s certainly a highly-anticipated blockbuster film, it’s opening two weeks after Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 and one week after Matthew Vaugh’s Kingsman 3 (a release date that was previously held for Bond 25), so regardless of its quality, the upcoming sequel will have stiff competition to deal with.

Professor X & Magneto Reunite in X-Men: Dark Phoenix Set Photo

A new set photo for X-Men: Dark Phoenix show a reunion between James McAvoy’s Professor Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto. This will be the fourth X-Men film for both actors. The two have played the roles of Professor X and Magneto in First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse.

Set in the 1990s, the upcoming film will adapt “The Dark Phoenix Saga”, a well-known X-Men storyline that involves Jean Grey becoming the host of a powerful cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force, that will eventually cause her turn against her teammates. As the Dark Phoenix, Jean possesses the power to destroy worlds, making her one of the most destructive forces in the universe.

Posted by mariopower.official on Instagram, new photos from the set of Dark Phoenix show a bald McAvoy playing chess with Fassbender, which is actually something their characters have done in previous films. The circumstances behind the reunion between Professor X and Magneto are unclear. The scene is part of a series of reshoots in Montreal. The X-Men: Dark Phoenix  reshoots began in late August and are expected to continue until the end of September.

Filming actually completed in October of last year, so fans were surprised when 20th Century Fox announced that its Nov. 2 release date was moved back to February 14, 2019. The delay was partly made to accommodate reshoots. This caused some to have concerns, considering that early reactions to Dark Phoenix were reportedly underwhelming. However, it appears that the reshoots have less to do with problems with the film and more to do with scheduling conflicts, due to the movie’s all-star cast.

It’s been reported that the reshoots deal primarily with material from the third act of the film, which could suggest that this scene with Professor X and Magneto takes place during or near the conclusion of the movie.

In X-Men: Apocalypse, Magneto was being controlled by En Sabah Nur, but was eventually restored to his senses. He helped Professor X and the X-Men find a way to defeat the villain, and in the aftermath of the film he assisted Professor X in rebuilding his school. However, he refused Professor X’s offer to stay on as a teacher. Though Magneto may not necessarily be considered an ally to the X-Men, he could be one of the first people Professor X will turn to for help when the Phoenix Force – or Jessica Chastain’s mysterious shapeshifter – emerges as the X-Men’s latest threat.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Set Photos Reunite Tom Holland & Zendaya

Tom Holland and Zendaya star in the latest batch of Spider-Man: Far From Home set photos. When Marvel Studios and Sony decided to reboot Spider-Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they did so by making some changes. First, they casted an age appropriate actor to play a teenage Peter Parker, which got Holland his superhero role. Secondly, they wanted to update the portrayals of several characters to better reflect the current look of Queens. Their other point of emphasis was using characters that hadn’t been done before, such as Vulture, Shocker, Tinkerer, Ned Leeds, and so on. But, they also surprised by including a Mary Jane twist.

The end of Spider-Man: Homecoming had Zendaya’s character Michelle say, “My friends call me MJ,” establishing her as Peter’s major love-interest moving forward as a nod to Mary Jane Watson from the comics. A romance between the two characters has barely been set up, as Zendaya didn’t have too large of a role in Homecoming. She’s back for Far From Home and new set photos show her and Holland sharing some scenes.

Related: Gwyneth Paltrow Reportedly Back For Spider-Man: Far From Home

Daily Mail shared the latest set photos from Spider-Man: Far From Home that feature just Tom Holland and Zendaya. The two were spotted in Prague filming late night scenes together. The scene appears to be low-stakes and just a conversation between Peter and MJ. One photo does show both actors signaling peace signs up into the sky with a bright light shining on them. There was also a scene being shot of an explosion on the nearby river.

Zendaya has long been confirmed to be part of the cast of Far From Home but this is the best look at her on the set. These photos also are the first sign of Peter and MJ getting to spend some quality time alone, so this could be one of the scenes that sets up a romantic relationship between the two. Since the film is going all across Europe, Far From Home could be a global adventure where Peter and MJ really get to know each other.

As for the rest of the images, it is difficult to say what is going on. The peace signs image is odd because it isn’t directed towards the paparazzi and rather appears to be part of the scene. Is this just Peter and MJ giving a sign to their friends who are up in a building that they’ll be in soon or a signal to someone for saving them? Unless Peter tells MJ that he’s Spider-Man during Far From Home, she wouldn’t be around for any encounters with Fury or other MCU characters. Some action is happening close by with the explosion scene, so maybe someone else actually saves the youngsters in a time of need that allows Peter to keep his secret identity. Unless more photos or videos come, the uncertainty that comes with these images likely won’t clear up. But, since Spider-Man: Far From Home still has weeks of filming left, this may not be the last chance fans have to see what is going on.

Avengers 4: Pepper & Tony Will Reunite According to RDJ Set Photo

It looks like Tony Stark and Pepper Potts will be sharing the screen once again when Avengers 4 hits theaters in May. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow have been appearing in the MCU since the universe’s launch with Iron Man in 2008. They have shown up in 6 films together, with the fourth Avengers installment marking the seventh.

Since the news that Avengers 4 reshoots were underway, several actors have taken to social media to confirm their appearances. Just yesterday, Paltrow posted a photo of herself on Instagram and, although the picture didn’t give away any details, the caption did. She added #pepperony, the name that fans have given to Pepper and Tony as a couple. Karen Gillan also confirmed her return for the reshoots and Chris Evans revealed that he has reverted to his classic Captain America look for the film. Jeremy Renner proved with absolute certainty that Hawkeye was also reporting for duty.

Related: Hi-Res Avengers 4 Art Reveals Closer Looks at Hulk Suit & Captain Marvel

Paltrow posted another photo on Instagram today, one that included Downey Jr., with the caption “lunchtime” and the #pepperony. It seems that Paltrow will play a larger role in Avengers 4 than she did in the previous film. The actress has admitted that Pepper and Tony will have a child together and also posted images of herself in a motion capture suit. It’s unknown if this is for armor that Tony made for her protection or of she is going to suit up as her alter ego, Rescue, as she has in the comics.

Avengers 4 is set to end the MCU as we know it. Thanos has been on the rise since the first Avengers installment in 2012. This film will wrap up that story, likely while laying the groundwork for a new one. The contracts are up for most of the MCU’s mainstays and it’s unknown exactly who is staying and who is leaving. Chris Evans has repeatedly assured fans that he is done playing Captain America, but the futures of many other heroes remains uncertain.

The outlook on Tony Stark has been fairly grim, with Downey Jr.’s tenure in the MCU assumedly coming to an end after this film. For over 10 years, the actor has been the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, although there is a new school of heroes on the way, it likely won’t be the same without him. Even if fans do say goodbye to Tony, that definitely doesn’t mean that Pepper will be exiting as well. Although she could certainly leave, it’s just as likely that she will remain in some capacity, as Rescue or otherwise. It has been previously reported that Pepper will appear in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Depending on how Avengers 4 wraps up, this could be the last time that viewers see this fan favorite couple together.
