WB Chairman: DC More Focused on Directors Than Marvel Shared Universe

The future of DC movies will be director-driven instead of attempting to copy the Marvel Cinematic Universe and shared universes. Warner Bros. put a larger focus on DC films as a result of Marvel Studios’ success and at one point believed Zack Snyder was their guy to create a shared universe, even after Man of Steel divided audiences. Getting their cinematic universe going has not been easy, though.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad performed well financially, despite negative reviews, while Wonder Woman became the bright spot in 2017 with its critical and financial success. Justice League, on the other hand, arrived with mixed reception and disappointed at the box office. This all happened as Warner Bros. and DC Films underwent several changes. Throughout the executive and creative turnover, James Wan sat back and focused on delivering the best Aquaman movie he could without much of any studio interference. The result is a film that was liked by critics, while also appealing to the masses in a major way, which is evident by the film’s $1 billion box office gross. Aquaman is Wan’s singular vision (with a bit of input from Snyder) that is largely not concerned about a greater universe.

This now appears to be Warner Bros.’ overall model when it comes to their DC films. Toby Emmerich, who was named chairman of Warner Bros. early last year as a result of the aforementioned shakeups, spoke to THR about the studio’s outlook and plans for their superhero properties. He was asked what the success of Aquaman has shown them and, thankfully, it means more of the same. He said:

“We all feel like we’ve turned a corner now. We’re playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it’s that it always has to be about the directors.”

Aquaman is going to get plenty of credit for making a director-driven model DC’s plan, but the success of Wonder Woman should also not be forgotten. It is, however, somewhat ironic how this came to be Warner Bros.’ decision for the future of DC movies. Snyder had his own specific story in mind, but was forced to alter the speed and trajectory of it to fit in Warner Bros. universe-building. Both sides made compromises – and arguably for the worst – resulting in Snyder not getting to tell his single story and Warner Bros. being without the Marvel-esque cinematic universe they wanted. Now, Warner Bros. is moving forward with a model that could actually suit a director like Snyder – despite the fact that he has moved on.

When looking ahead to what the DCEU has coming, it appears Emmerich’s words will be proven to be true. David F. Sandberg is directing Shazam! with the lighthearted tone he wants, and even though there are plenty of DC references in the film, there’s no Superman cameo anymore that would heavily connect it to prior movies. There is also Birds of Prey coming in 2020 that will be focused on the female heroes at hand, while Wonder Woman 1984 is able to tell its own story – even if it could wind up retconning prior DC movies, depending on Steve Trevor’s role. And, as we look to the future with films like The FlashThe Batman, or Suicide Squad 2, all of those have been touted as being clearly defined by their individual directors: John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Matt Reeves, and James Gunn, respectively. They’re even doing completely standalone Elseworlds films like Joker. It would appear on paper that DC movies have turned the corner, so now we just have to hope they don’t take a wrong turn yet again.

Theory: Get Out & Us Are In The Same Shared Universe

Are Us and Get Out set in the same universe? A popular theory has surfaced from the reveal of the first trailer for Jordan Peele’s Us: that it is a follow-up of sorts to his Oscar-winning directorial debut, Get Out. The new work shares a lot of thematic substance with Get Out, being a horror story centered on black protagonists, with a firm psychological bent to the premise and chills, and the overlap is so strong fans are speculating that there’s a more tangible connection between the two.

Given that we’re in the era of cinematic universes, it wouldn’t be surprising if this theory was accurate – especially since M. Night Shyamalan managed to backdoor a franchise out of 2000’s Unbreakable in Split, which has led to this year’s Glass.

Do Get Out and Us share more than a genre, a creepy atmosphere, and a killer premise? Let’s break down the clues (so far) that these two movies are set in the same universe.

Jordan Peele Says Get Out Had Shared Universe Clues

In an interview with Kevin McCarthy, Peele said that Get Out is full of hints to a wider universe that give him a range of options to weave into future projects. In his words, he “wanted to make a movie you have to watch two times,” and also said that, “I’ve put some Easter eggs in there and I’ll probably continue to weave in the universe in my next movie.” That in itself seems like confirmation that Us is set in the same universe as his first feature.

Get Out‘s setup does have a “first in a series” energy to it, with the idea of a massive conspiracy within white upper-middle-class people who literally buy and sell black bodies. The plot only deals with one family, firmly cementing the notion that this goes deeper than just this one guy’s terrible luck. Since Get Out‘s release, people have been digging into every scene, finding clues to the unraveling mystery and the wider world that Peele has created.

The Similarities Between Get Out And Us

From what we’ve seen so far, Us has a similar vibe to Get Out. While the trailer leans hard on the central horror concept, Peele’s genre-melding approach is very evident. The footage starts with some light family comedy as the main characters are discussing music on a road-trip to a beach vacation, before slowly descending into the eventual madness.

The shots are all static, the colors bold but natural with a heavy emphasis on lighting. The supporting cast – among them Elisabeth Moss and Jonah Hill – are briefly shown to demonstrate the similarly dialogue-heavy propulsion Peele used in Get Out. The setting has the main characters on the back-foot, in a holiday house, isolated and away from their home neighborhood, and the threat is once again existential, with the family battling their own doppelgangers. Our protagonists are defending themselves against being replaced, the same threat underpinning Get Out, wherein white people were putting their brains into black bodies in order to steal their youth and strength, with the original consciousness helplessly watching another person live their life.

The root of Get Out is racial terror, and the ways in which racism manifests itself that often only its targets can really recognize. Being about a black family who are, like Chris, surrounded by white people in a relatively unfamiliar space, Us is using the same parameters for its humor and its horror, looking to make us laugh at the same behavior it will likely then use to send chills down our spine as the narrative takes shape. Get Out is about subtle, insidious racism and the cancerous undergrowth therein, and from the first teaser, Us is setting itself up to be similarly keyed into the anxiety about black folk losing control of their own identities.

Is The Second Family In Us Linked To Get Out?

The easy and immediate assumption is that the second family that shows up in Us are from the same organization that are responsible for the brain transplants in Get Out, having now moved into somehow duplicating desirable bodies. It’s in the same sci-fi/horror wheelhouse and works as an extension of what we’ve already seen, creating a new layer of mystery for the characters to uncover. How does duplication work? Are they perfect clones, or something else?

What’s more, this premise opens up to an even heftier exploration of “benevolent” racism. In Get Out, the desire for black bodies is based on a belief that they are superior, intersecting with a sense of entitlement – the rich white folk bidding on the bodies believe this is just proper, because they deserve access to a longer, better life, even if the life is stolen from someone else.

In Us it appears that not only are the people being copied, the copies are then violently replacing the originals. Assuming the other family are being piloted by a well-off set of investors, they’ve wilfully signed up to take the original’s family’s lives by force, using whatever means necessary.

Is Jordan Peele’s Shared Universe About Something Bigger?

There’s an argument here about canon versus theme, and what carries the most impact. A mythology that holds a bunch of explicit connections could be fun and interesting, but that’s also a somewhat shallow interpretation of Peele’s statement about weaving together a universe. There’s also a danger that fans could become more involved in piecing together the connections and evaluating consistency on a material level, rather than absorbing what the individual movies are actually saying.

Us having more than a nod to Get Out somewhere runs the danger of Peele’s next movie in the universe being held up as something that will tie everything together – like Shymalan’s Glass. Implicit connection, through theme, emboldens the messaging and execution of the movie as a whole and fosters more genuine analysis, as fans are less concerned with hard evidence and more about what the symbolism and representation.

And, to be frank, we don’t need any more franchises; we need bold films by fearless creators like Jordan Peele who understand genre and how to tell a great, memorable story. Part of why Get Out was a hit is because it was original and came without any baggage to get in the way of its bigger ideas, and Us deserves to have its own unique identity as well.

10 Hints That Black Mirror Is A Shared Universe

It didn’t start out that way, but it’s becoming more and more clear that Black Mirror is a shared universe. With the release of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, the evidence is piling up in favor of this theory. That said, Bandersnatch has thrown into question the very nature of this reality. However, each episode has tied more and more, seemingly innocuous strings together to form a tightly-knit, complicated shared universe. Don’t believe us? Here are 10 hints that Black Mirror is a shared universe.

10. Raiman’s Milk

In the episode “Men Against Fire,” a soldier named “Hunter” Raiman, played by Madeline Brewer, reveals in passing that her family owns a farm. Later, in the episode “USS Callister,” we see that chocolate and strawberry flavor Raiman-brand milk are favorites of Robert Daly, the disgruntled CTO and co-founder of Callister Inc. While it’s not clear what amount of time, if any, has passed between the events of these episodes, it is clear the Raiman family farm is successful.

9. UKN News

Featuring prominently in the series’ first episode “The National Anthem,” UKN appears to be one of the larger news networks located in the United Kingdom. First seen covering the events of that episode, UKN is later seen in “Be Right Back” in a broadcast regarding the scientific breakthrough of creating lifelike human skin. As well, UKN reporters are on the scene during the events of “The Waldo Moment” and “White Bear.” UKN is featured once again in “Hated in the Nation” covering the events of the #DeathTo movement.

8. Waldo

After the climax of “The Waldo Moment,” the titular cartoon personality is separated from its creator and used ostensibly as a capitalistic cash cow by large organizations. This is seen throughout the Black Mirror series as either the face or name of Waldo appears in multiple episodes thereafter. In “White Christmas,” Joe is channel surfing and briefly flips to a channel featuring Waldo. Also in that episode, there is a visible user ID that reads “I_Am_Waldo.” Waldo’s face is also seen as a sticker on a laptop in “Shut Up and Dance” and on a lunchbox in “Arkangel.”

7. Grains

The full plot of “The Entire History of You” revolves around technology that is only referred to as “grains.” These grains are small implants behind the ear that record everything a person sees and hears. With this technology, you can replay and even delete memories. In “Arkangel,” we see the next step in this technology, and we know it’s the same technology as the user interface is practically identical.

6. TV Shows

In the episode “Fifteen Million Merits,” we see programming for several TV shows. Some of them, like Don’t Scare the Hare and The Whole 19 Yards, are actual British TV shows. However, Botherguts, Hot Shot, and WraithBabes are fictional. The show Hot Shot also appears in “White Christmas” and we learn in “Crocodile” that one of the judges was caught in a hotel room “with a rent boy.” Continuing on with the presumed shared universe, in “Crocodile” Mia is creating her alibi, and we see WraithBabes as a pornographic option.

5. Saint Juniper

The events of the fan favorite episode “San Junipero” makes lots of appearances throughout the Black Mirror series. In “USS Callister,” Robert Daly plugs into his virtual world using an uplink device very similar to design and function as the technology seen used by Yorkie and Kelly in “San Junipero.” In “Metalhead,’ a postcard advertising San Junipero can be seen when Bella is rifling a drawer. Rolo Haynes references the conclusion of San Junipero in Black Mirror when he talks about “uploading old people to the cloud.” It is also revealed that Haynes previously worked at a hospital named Saint Juniper. In Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, another Dr. Haynes is seen working at a building named “Saint Juniper’s Medical Practice.”

4. Cookies

First introduced in “White Christmas,” a Cookie is the name given to the digitally replicated consciousness of a human being. Cookies serve as a major plot point in the episode and first raise questions about their legality and the morality of their existence. At the end of “Shut Up and Dance,” an advertisement for the cookie-run home automation service from “White Christmas” is seen quickly on an online news website. In addition, a section of newsfeed seen in “Hated in The Nation” reveals that the European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Cookies have human rights. Cookies show up again in “Black Museum” as a major plot point.

3. TCKR Systems

TCKR Systems is a neural research and technology company that we first see in the episode “Playtest.” Early in the episode, we see Cooper reading Edge magazine with a headline that reads: “Inside TCKR: Turning Nostalgia Into A Game.” In “San Junipero,” it is revealed that TCKR Systems is the developer behind the creation of a simulated reality that is San Junipero. In “Metalhead,” the letters TCKR are seen on the side of a truck driven by Bella. The episode “Black Museum” reveals that Haynes’ work at the previously mentioned Saint Juniper Hospital was for TCKR Systems. In Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, the name of the software company is Tuckersoft. This company has made several games whose titles allude to previous episodes of Black Mirror, but none are more obviously paralleled than “Metl Hedd.” — a direct copy of the episode “Metalhead.”

2. The Glyph

Previously known as the “White Bear,” this symbol has been separated from our first viewing experience by Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’s reference to this symbol as “the glyph.” We first see this marking on the hunter’s ski mask in the episode “White Bear.” We later see this symbol again in “Playtest.” When Cooper is testing the VR game’s configuration, we see the glyph as one of the symbols that turns into a gopher hole. In Bandersnatch, we learn that the glyph represents branching pathways. In Bandersnatch, visions of the glyph drove Stefan (and author Jerome F. Davis before him) insane with the ideas of free will and determinism.

1. White Bear

Aside from being the best Black Mirror episode so far, “White Bear” is one of the most referenced episodes within the Black Mirror universe. In “White Christmas,” a news ticker reveals that Victoria Skillane, the protagonist sentenced to the White Bear Justice Park, has had her appeal rejected. At the end of that episode, we learn that Joe Potter is being held at White Bear facility, implying that there is possibly more than one such vigilante justice machine. In “Hated in the Nation,” Blue says she left the force because of the Iain Rannoch case. This is the same one that put Victoria Skillane behind bars in “White Bear.” The planets Skillane IV and Rannoch in “USS Callister” refer to the child killers Iain Rannoch and Victoria Skillane in “White Bear.”

The Disney-Fox Deal Will Close January 2019

The Walt Disney Company and 21st Century Fox’s major merger is coming together faster than anticipated and will now officially be completed on January 1, 2019. Fox has plenty of success over the years through a variety of media outlets, but determined they could not properly compete in the movie and TV space. They looked to sell these branches of the company and quickly found Disney to be their preferred buyer. Comcast attempted to pull the deal out from under Disney’s reaches, but simply made them pay them pay $71 billion for Fox’s assets instead of the initial $54 billion bid.

There has been plenty of resistance to the deal because of the monopoly Disney continues to grow and the job losses that will come from it. From Disney’s perspective, they view the Fox acquisition as a great way to enhance their library of content prior to launching their own streaming service late next year. Throughout the process, it was anticipated that summer 2019 would be when the deal would close, but it’ll actually be much sooner.

Variety shared the news that 21st Century Fox president Peter Rice told Fox employees the merger will be “ready to close” on January 1, 2019. This effectively means that 2018 will be the final year for this current look of Fox and moves up the timeline for the merger as a result.

Disney and Fox shareholders officially approved the terms of the merger back in July, less than a month after the Department of Justice approved the deal on their own. The studios have since been seeking approval in various countries around the world, while also figuring out the new hierarchy of Disney in a post-merger landscape. For Rice’s part, he’s joining Disney as a top TV executive. Disney recently made several of these types of moves official, while other executives have already found jobs elsewhere for when the merger closes.

The accelerated timetable of the deal comes after reports that a late 2018 finalization could be possible. They will miss this mark by a day it appears, as both studios now hope to become one at the turn of the calendar year. This is all barring some unforeseen mishap with the deal, but considering how well the deal has gone so far, it is difficult to imagine anything coming up now that would hinder them from completing the deal on Jan 1. After all, Rice told this to all of Fox’s current employees in a town-hall setting at their Los Angeles studio, so they must be confident that this date will stick. How quickly changes, such as cancellation of some projects or Marvel Studios’ plans for the X-Men, are made from then on remain to be seen. But, we do at least now know when the merger will be completed.

Little Mermaid Rumor: Lady Gaga Possibly Up for Ursula Role

Disney is rumored to want Lady Gaga as part of their live-action The Little Mermaid movie cast. The Mouse House has found great success remaking films from their animated library in a new way. These big budget live-action takes on the stories have made the studio billions, and that’s only the beginning, with properties like The Lion KingAladdin, and Mulan on their way in the next two years. One of the other IPs they’re looking to bring to the big screen in this new light is beloved film The Little Mermaid.

The studio has been mulling a live-action Little Mermaid for the past two years, and some progress has been made. Even before the buzz for Mary Poppins Returns truly begins, Disney reportedly already courted its director Rob Marshall to tackle this next. There’s still no indication when the movie will be made, but the latest rumor shares which rising star Disney is reportedly eyeing.

The Disinsider shared a rumor regarding a name they’ve heard is high up on Disney’s wish list for a role in Little Mermaid: Lady Gaga. The outlet notes that this is an unconfirmed report they are hearing, and one that Disney representatives declined to comment on, so this rumor should be treated as such and taken with a grain of salt for now. However, if this is true, it’s believed that Gaga is being considered for the villain role in the movie as Ursula.

Gaga is currently enjoying overwhelming praise for her performance in Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born. Her efforts both as an actress and as a singer in the movie have blown away critics and general moviegoers alike. This buzz also reportedly had her in consideration for a role in Birds of Prey. That didn’t pan out, and now it could be Disney’s live-action department that adds her. It would be a huge coup for the project, and give them someone with legitimate talent as a singer to bring the sea witch to life.

The prospect of Gaga joining Little Mermaid comes on the heels of Zendaya previously being rumored to have an offer on the table to play Ariel. That has yet to be confirmed too, but the rising actress is open to taking on the role. A potential Little Mermaid live-action movie led by Zendaya and Lady Gaga would be quite the impressive start to the cast. If either or both do join the movie, expect Disney to go after similarly big names for the roles of Eric, King Triton, and the voices of Flounder and Sebastian. Hopefully these castings do pan out, and some official updates on The Little Mermaid aren’t too far away.

Charlie Cox Thinks The Defenders Was Too Slow, Still Wants Season 2

Marvel’s The Defenders miniseries had its issues, but Charlie Cox thinks there’s potential for a second season. The Daredevil star, who’s currently doing promotion for the third season of the Netflix Marvel universe’s flagship show, discussed the possibility of bringing all the New York heroes back together, and what needs to be different this time around to ensure it doesn’t continue to be the least-viewed Marvel series on the streaming service.

Cox isn’t the first actor to speak out about season 2. In March, prior to the release of Jessica Jones season 2, Krysten Ritter shared that if the opportunity came about, she would do another season, but that she didn’t think there were any plans to go down that path. However, more recently, at Baltimore Comic-Con, Mike Colter (who stars in Luke Cage) joked that the crowd didn’t cheer enough in response to a mention of The Defenders season 2, but then replied to the increased applause, “Alright, alright, maybe we can do something.”

Now, Cox is adding his two cents, and he’s even more positive. Speaking with Metro, Cox revealed how much he enjoyed working on The Defenders. He said he got “a little kick out of” seeing how the four unique heroes came together, and worked side-by-side. The issue, Cox believes, was the format, agreeing with many fans that the season “felt too slow,” but that he thinks this is because there was an emphasis on setting things up naturally, and then they ran out of time to put a focus on the actual team-up.

Cox went on to praise showrunner Marco Ramirez for his ability to meld the very different heroes into one show, calling it a “mammoth undertaking” that “he did fantastically.” But moving forward, he sees the benefit in keeping things on a smaller scale. “I would like to see a story that is more in keeping with the show’s that we make, which is a little bit more grounded, a little more boots on the ground. I don’t want to see us try and compete with the Avengers in terms of the scope.” However, though he clearly has hopes for a season 2, Cox isn’t aware of any progress made toward making more of The Defenders.

Frankly, despite how cool it is to see worlds merge and superheroes team up, it’s hard to see the benefit of another season. The various loose ends from the final episode will (hopefully) be all tied up by Daredevil season 3, and it’s undeniable that the show was fraught with mistakes and plot holes. But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen in some capacity. Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel TV, made some intriguing comments last month, hinting that perhaps another season could involve a different group of heroes as the Defenders. Considering the wealth of captivating supporting characters the connected series have offered, this could be an idea worth exploring for Netflix.

Rambo 5 Officially Titled Last Blood

The fifth movie in the Rambo franchise is officially titled Rambo 5: Last Blood. Back when Sylvester Stallone was solidifying himself as a major movie star on the back of the Rocky franchise, Stallone boarded another project that would ultimately take up years of his life. He first played John Rambo in 1982’s First Blood. He returned for two sequels by 1988, then wasn’t seen again as the highly-skilled soldier for a decade. Another decade has since passed Rambo by, but Stallone is finally ready to return to his roots.

The last few months have been filled with updates on the next Rambo movie, one that will see Rambo return to American soil. Stallone shared some first look images from the movie recently that tease his new rancher lifestyle, but it’ll be a conflict with human traffickers which bring him back into action – possibly for the final time.

THR confirmed that the fifth movie in the franchise is officially titled Rambo 5: Last Blood. The title alludes to Rambo’s story coming full circle after the first film was simply titled First Blood. The direct sequel continued this trend in a way by calling it Rambo: First Blood Part II. There was hardly consistency from that point on, with the third film titled Rambo III before the fourth entry was simply called Rambo.

The confirmed subtitle for Rambo 5 has a finality to it that could make fans of the character nervous. Stallone’s been revisiting several iconic roles as of late, and is putting his familiar characters through the ringer. Rocky Balboa got cancer in Creed and could die as soon as this November in Creed II. Rambo could have a similarly short life expectancy. Even if he manages to make it out of the fifth movie alive, titling the movie Last Blood indicates that it will be the final installment of the franchise. Now, crazy success critically or financially could eventually change that, but this appears to be the direction Rambo 5 is heading.

Filming on Last Blood is currently underway as Stallone has confirmed, but not much else is set for the movie officially. Paz Vega just joined the cast as a reporter who works with Rambo following the kidnapping of her half-sister. Casting for the sister and her kidnappers hasn’t yet been announced. Get the Gringo‘s Adrian Grunberg is set to direct the film, which is expected to hit theaters in fall 2019. As long as production continues to move along smoothly and the casting process doesn’t have any hiccups, Rambo 5: Last Blood will be here before fans know it.

Eddie Brock’s Notebook Reveals Carnage Backstory for Venom 2

Cletus Kasady’s backstory for Venom 2 is revealed thanks to Eddie Brock’s notebook from Venom. Sony’s decision to try and launch a cinematic universe of their own appears to have paid off. The Tom Hardy-led Venom just set the October opening weekend record, making a sequel almost inevitable. Through the use of its post-credits scene, Venom already established seeds for the sequel to grow as Woody Harrelson made a cameo as Cletus Kasaday, the psychotic killer who becomes Carnage in the comics.

It was originally just before production began on Venom that reports surfaced that Carnage would make an appearance. It was later reported that Harrelson had joined the film with speculation pointing to this being his true role. This began to see some fans expect to see Carnage fully realized at some point in the movie, despite him having no presence in the marketing. That is because director Ruben Fleischer is saving Carnage for the sequel.

The post-credits scene for Venom only teased Kasady’s eventual escape from prison and his transformation into Carnage. As it turns out, Eddie’s interview with Cletus lasted far beyond what audiences saw. ComicBook shared an image of Eddie’s notebook that was on display at New York Comic Con, which details Kasady’s backstory that will be used for Venom 2. Between a massacre in New York and killing his grandmother, the Disciplinarian Administrator at St. Estes Home for Boys, and a random girl who wouldn’t go on a date with him, the notebook clearly establishes Kasady’s bloodlust.

These details are instantly terrifying for fans and just goes to show how insane Kasady is, even before he becomes bonded with the Carnage symbiote. These multiple murders are villainous enough, but his twisted psyche is further highlighted by additional details. Eddie believes he has Oedipus Complex (the feeling of desire for the parent of the opposite sex) and is possibly the reason why he dug up his mother’s grave. Before that, Cletus tortured and killed his mother’s dog with a drill.

Kasady is a worthy villain for Venom and Eddie to hunt down based on his prior record and what he would surely do upon being freed. But, it would be the pairing of Kasady’s personality and the power of Carnage that makes him a supervillain-level threat. Since this notebook page and these details aren’t explicitly states in Venom, a sequel will likely retell parts of this backstory and maybe even show it through flashbacks. It could be difficult to do just that with a PG-13 rating, but Venom 2 isn’t expected to be R-rated either. However it happens, Carnage will be the villain of Venom 2 and at least we now know some of his backstory that Fleischer and company worked out for him.

Venom 2 Will Not Be Rated-R Either, According to Avi Arad

Sony is already thinking about Venom 2 and they won’t make the jump to an R-rating. After bringing Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony once again wanted to get a shared universe of their own. Tom Hardy was cast to lead Venom as Eddie Brock, and the early box office results – a record setting $80 million opening in October – indicate that this will hardly be the last Spidey-related property the studio makes. Next up is going to be Jared Leto’s Morbius, but attention is turning towards what seems to be an inevitable sequel.

Based on the post-credits scene for Venom, it’s quite clear where they want to take the character next. Eddie visits the prison cell of Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who ends the movie saying, “When I get out, and I will, there will be carnage.” An appearance by Carnage was heavily rumored for Venom and, with the violent symbiote set to be the villain of a sequel, many fans wanted to see Venom and Carnage let loose with an R-rating, but that isn’t happening.

Collider spoke to Venom producer Avi Arad about the chances for Venom 2 to move up the MPAA’s rating scale. After all, the first Venom was reportedly envisioned as an R-rated movie, but was PG-13 when everything was all said and done. Despite Carnage joining the mix, Arad doesn’t believe he can only be done right with an R-rating.

“When you hear Carnage, the only thing you can think of is R. But, if you know his story, if you really know the comic, there’s no R here. He’s a tortured soul. It’s not about what he does, because we never have to show the knife going from here to there, and the blood is pouring. What you have to show is, what is the motivation? Was he born like that, or [is he] someone we should feel for, because if you succeeding in making a villain someone you can feel for, jackpot.”

As disappointed as some fans may be that Venom 2 won’t jump to an R-rating, one can hardly blame Sony for sticking with a PG-13 vision. The first movie just broke box office records with a PG-13 rating even with largely negative reviews from critics. If a sequel is better executed and has more positive reactions, there’s no reason to believe Venom 2 won’t perform even better if Carnage is included. Sony found success with PG-13, so why would they switch to R and potentially shrink their audience?

Of course, this may still not sit well with many. But, Arad believes they’ll be able to craft the right story around Carnage that won’t mandate extreme violence or anything else that would warrant an R-rating. This will, obviously, put a ton of pressure on the writers of Venom 2 to do this, so that way they can make a complicated foe in Carnage, and then leave it up to director Ruben Fleischer (who will likely return for the sequel) to deliver on the action. Hopefully, Arad is proven to be true and Venom 2 does the story and characters justice in a PG-13 environment.

Shameless Star Cameron Monaghan Leaving Show After Next Episode

Cameron Monaghan, who portrays Ian Gallagher on Shameless, has revealed that the next episode of the show will be his last. The Showtime series, adapted from the U.K. comedy-drama of the same name, is currently airing its ninth season. And Monagahn isn’t the only one exiting the acclaimed show: this news comes on the heels of star Emmy Rossum’s own announcement that she will be exiting the series at the end of the season.

Monaghan, who has been acting since he was a child, landed his first starring role playing Ian, one of the middle children of the Gallagher family who, along with their neighbors in a low-income neighborhood in Chicago’s South Side, struggle to get by in a changing landscape. Gallagher’s character has faced a lot of hardship on the show, from coming out to his family to dealing with his bipolar disorder. The actor has received recognition for playing the character, especially for the relationship between Ian and Mickey, his first boyfriend, but now he feels that it’s time to go.

Monaghan shared the news on Instagram in a long caption accompanying images of himself and some of his castmates, including Ethan Cutkosky (Carl Gallagher), Jeremy Allen White (Lip Gallagher), Steve Howey (Kevin “Kev” Ball), and Shanola Hampton (Veronica “V” Fisher). In his statement, Monaghan explains that he has known that he would be leaving the show for a year, but kept it a secret, wanting viewers to be surprised and to “experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character.” 

Monaghan recalls how he began filming when he was 15, and how much he has grown in the nearly 10 years since. He notes that he is “gracious” for everything the experience brought him, especially the people he met on the show. “All good things must come to an end,” he proclaims, noting the cliche. He ends his statement by thanking the fans for watching and signing off with a question about the future: “Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?”

Though it’s sad to see Monaghan go, it does free up his schedule for his other notable TV role(s). Monaghan recurs on Gotham as twin brothers Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska, who bear a resemblance to Batman’s nemesis, the Joker. From the beginning, the show has teased that Jerome could be the Joker, but neither he nor Jeremiah has ever been officially given the moniker. As the show prepares to enter its final season, word has spread that there’s yet another Joker on the horizon, and this one might be the real deal. Audiences will find out when Gotham season 5 five premieres early next year.
