Disney+ Is Struggling To Match The Mandalorian’s Success

Disney+ is struggling to match the success of The Mandalorian. By any measure, The Mandalorian was a massive hit for Disney. The first episode released on the launch day of the new Disney+ streaming service, and the world immediately fell in love with Baby Yoda.

Although The Witcher was the most popular series worldwide in December 2019, Disney+ has currently only released in a handful of territories, so the comparison isn’t really appropriate. Looking purely at the United States market, however, The Mandalorian came out in the lead. According to third party analytics, it was officially the most in-demand streaming show in the US in December 2019. Peak demand was 7.3 percent higher than that of The Witcher, its only real competitor in this period. But the challenge facing Disney+ is simple; what comes next?

Any streaming service is really dependent on the success of its digital originals, content that viewers can’t watch anywhere else. It’s not enough for Disney+ to have just the one breakout hit; it needs to have a wealth of content performing just as well. According to Parrot Analytics, a data analytics firm who measure online demand for TV shows, none of the other Disney+ originals are quite hitting the mark. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was the best, with 19.23x more demand than the average TV show, but that didn’t even land it near the top 100 series by US audience demand last month.

Disney+ is centered upon five brands; Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. At this stage, though, it looks as though only the Star Wars brand is capturing the imagination. Parrot note that they expect the new and final season of The Clone Wars to be another hit, and The Mandalorian season 2 is dropping as soon as fall 2020. But there needs to be more to Disney+ than just Lucasfilm, as proven by anecdotal evidence people are canceling Disney+ now The Mandalorian is over. Indeed, that may well explain why Marvel Studios appear to be accelerating the production and release schedule of their various Disney+ TV shows; Disney realize they need to have more strings to their bow. Unfortunately, though, it will still be around 9 months before the Marvel content is ready for release.

Of course, there’s a sense in which this was always going to be an issue for such a new streaming service; it will take time for Disney+ to build up a library catalog of originals that can compete with the likes of Netflix and Prime Video. In Disney’s advantage, however, is the release model they’re following. Rivals tend to drop a whole season at once, whereas Disney is smartly following the traditional episodic format. As a result, demand for a series grows over time, peaking just after the season finale. In contrast, demand for the likes of Stranger Things and even The Witcher tends to peak shortly after the whole season has dropped, and often declines at quite a remarkable rate. Disney+ will hopefully find this to be a more sustainable model – when the content starts rolling out a little more consistently.

The Hills: New Beginnings’ Kaitlynn Carter Struggling After Breakups

After two public breakups in three months, The Hills: New Beginnings star, Kaitlynn Carter is “going through some sh*t”. Carter, a public figure, social media influencer, and online fashion mogul, split from girlfriend of one month, pop-star Miley Cyrus, in late September. This follows split from husband Brody Jenner in August.

The Hills: New Beginnings premiered in June of this year as a sequel to the popular 2000’s MTV series, The Hills, and includes many of the original cast members, including Jenner. The show was renewed for a second season, but as of now has no air date. The second season will cover the separation of Jenner and Carter, who were never legally married but had a symbolic wedding in Indonesia back in June of 2018.

According to Us Weekly, Carter has defended accusations she has become “too thin” on Instagram by reminding fans she’s been “going through some sh!t”. A fan commented on Carter’s weight after the influencer poster a bikini-clad photo lounging in Palm Springs on October 22. The thirty-two year old replied, “I mean I been through some sh*t lately LOL”. The comment has since been deleted.

“Some sh*t” is an understatement for Carter, whose last three months have been incredibly dramatic. Shortly after The Hills: New Beginnings aired this summer, Carter and Jenner announced they were splitting up, just one year after their island nuptials. Not days later, Carter was spotted on an intimate Italian vacation with Miley Cyrus, fresh off Cyrus’ split from film star husband Liam Hemsworth. The Carter-Cyrus Italian romance came as a surprise to fans, who were still grieving the Carter-Jenner and Cyrus-Hemsworth relationships. The fling was over before fans could even give the couple a nickname. Cyrus broke the fling off a few short weeks later, supposedly not ready to get into anything serious so soon after her divorce from Hemsworth.

As if two public breakups weren’t enough for Carter, shortly after her split with Cyrus, ex-husband Jenner went public with new girlfriend, model Josie Canseco. And as if that wasn’t enough, only a few weeks after Jenner’s announcement, Cyrus showed off new boyfriend, musician Cody Simpson. Both Cyrus and Simpson have been very public about being seemingly “serious” about their relationship online. Recently, Cyrus dug at both her past relationships with Hemsworth and Carter by claiming she had “never experienced romance” before Simpson.

So yes, Carter has “been through some sh*t”, and yet, fans continue to body-shame her on social media. While most of the comments were flattery for the online personality, some of the comments on Carter’s poolside photo shoot included, “You look like you need to eat something .. just a little bit,” and “Oh Kaitlynn u look too thin r u ok you are so beautiful hope all is ok it was nice to see you healthy for a bit modelling it was normal it seems like the new norm, is being shown as super thin is only exceptional.” Carter’s comment, despite being deleted since, suggest her sense of humor and body image both remain intact.

Bachelorette Hannah Brown Struggling with Happiness After Finale

Former The Bachelorette star Hannah Brown is struggling with happiness after the season finale of the ABC reality show. She’s opened up on Instagram about her time out of the spotlight.

Brown experienced one of the more difficult seasons of The Bachelorette. Three of her suitors were rumored to have serious girlfriends back home before they began filming the season. Another attempted to sex-shame her on national TV. Then, not long after contestant Jed Wyatt proposed to her on the season finale, she found out he’d lied about being in a relationship before the show. When she attempted to rekindle things with the runner-up, Tyler Cameron, he started dating supermodel Gigi Hadid. Basically, she’s had a hard time the past few weeks. She recently opened up about her struggle with happiness since The Bachelorette finale.

On her Instagram Stories, Brown said that she was often asked if she was happy lately and that she hated the question. She said she’s not sure if she’s happy, since a lot of what’s happened to her the past month has been difficult. While she has moments of happiness, Brown added, “happiness is fleeting.” The reality star said she uses devotionals – types of religious observances – to cope during this time. She said they’ve helped her with “cleansing her heart” and “healing” following the finale. Despite the ups and downs, Brown said she wanted to “choose joy” and that it “infiltrates the soul.”

Honest policy: I’m struggling. Life is so different. Since last August, I’ve been a pageant queen, a bachelor contestant, and the Bachelorette. I’ve been in love with multiple people, I got engaged, I broke off an engagement, and I shared it all with millions of people. My faith has been questioned by thousands who don’t know my heart, and my transparency with my decisions has labeled me promiscuous. Simultaneously, I’ve become a role model for young women and started bigger conversations around faith, and sex. // I’m living on my own for the first time and shuffling through this life of next steps with press, media, and opportunities galore. I miss my friends and family who have watched my life explode. I feel guilty because I don’t have the time or emotional capacity to fill each of them in on my life right now. I can’t keep up with the people who matter most, because I can barely keep up with my own life right now. // I am not complaining about this past year of adventures. The woman who has emerged would shock the mirror-image young girl from a year ago. I have so many blessings to be thankful for. However it’s uncharted territory for me, and it’s been hard to really process what the heck is going on. // Maybe I needed write this out to remind myself I’m human and it’s okay to be overwhelmed. And maybe, I just needed to remind you guys too. Life is beautiful, but wild. I think it’s okay to be strong-to know you’re strong-but to still feel weak simultaneously. I believe that’s when the magic happens. My spirit has opportunity to grow and blossom from this place. Healing and restoration can happen. I can rest knowing that My Savior has compassion and wants to help and love me through this journey. I’ve just got to let Him. I don’t know if I have been lately— but I am now because honestly, I think I would give out if I didn’t. So yeah, I’m not going to struggle to disguise my weakness— I’m just gonna give over the keys to my main man Jesus and let him bless me through this ride. Isaiah 54:10

Brown had previously talked about how difficult life had been since the finale. In an Instagram post, she wrote that life was “so different” and that it was a whirlwind to get engaged and end that relationship in just a few weeks – and in front of the world. She said she’d been heartbroken and had her faith and integrity questioned. But at the same time, she’s been able to set an example for young women, and said she’s grateful for the opportunities that have come her way. Brown was recently cast in Season 28 of Dancing with the Stars, along with Queer Eye star Karamo Brown.

It makes sense that Brown is going through a difficult time right now. It’s hard to imagine what it’d be like to go through all of that while being in the public eye. But she’s got a lot of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities ahead of her, so hopefully she bounces back soon. Maybe she’ll get to redeem herself and take home the Mirrorball Trophy.

Netflix Struggling To Figure Out Irishman Theatrical Release Plan

Netflix is currently struggling to figure out the theatrical release plan for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. The director’s latest crime epic was originally set up at Paramount, who later balked due to the escalating production budget. It’s been widely-publicized that Scorsese is implementing digital de-aging technology so veterans like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino can appear as “younger” versions of themselves for certain scenes. The rising costs were no concern to Netflix, who eagerly went into business with the iconic filmmaker.

The Irishman shifting from a traditional Hollywood studio to a streaming giant obviously impacts how it will be distributed to general audiences. Netflix is planning on releasing the film at an unspecified time in the fall, but they also want to give it a proper theatrical run so The Irishman can qualify for Academy Awards. Unfortunately, Netflix is having difficulties negotiating a deal with some of the country’s biggest theater chains.

Related: Oscars 2020: Best Actor Predictions

According to The New York Times, Netflix is engaged in a stand-off with AMC and Cineplex regarding The Irishman’s release strategy. The main point of contention is the chains want The Irishman to play on the big screen exclusively for three months before it’s made available to stream. Netflix, of course, wants the film in as many living rooms as soon as possible. The various parties only recently reconvened to discuss the matter further, after initial conversations fell apart in July.

One way or another, The Irishman is going to play in theaters. Netflix has too much invested in the project, and they’re planning on giving it a major Oscar push when awards season heats up. AMC and Cineplex are not going to determine the film’s fate at the Academy Awards. The only thing at stake here is how many theaters The Irishman will play in and where. If Netflix can’t come to terms with the big chains, they can opt to give The Irishman a limited run in smaller theaters located in big markets. Scorsese, a longtime advocate for cinema and the theatergoing experience, is understandably pushing for a classic nationwide release, but he may have to compromise should the talks continue to go nowhere.

This issue isn’t going to go away any time soon. Netflix is looking to make a splash at the 2020 Oscars not just with The Irishman, but also Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and possibly Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat. The streaming giant also has new films from acclaimed directors like Spike Lee and David Fincher in the pipeline, illustrating a concerted effort by Netflix to continuously be in the Oscar discussion. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out, but there’s no denying things have drastically changed with the prominence of streaming.

Game of Thrones Is Struggling To Remind You The Iron Throne Still Exists

In only a matter of days, Game of Thrones will return to HBO, and fans around the world will be glued to their screens to find out just how this incredible series will end. As HBO gears up for the premiere, they’ve been dropping an impressive number of trailers, teasers, posters, and more.

However, fans may have noticed that the majority of these promos have been focused on one event in particular: the Battle of Winterfell. This is the battle that the show has been building to since season one, when the White Walkers were first revealed. It will be the battle between the armies of the living and the dead, and promos have seen the Starks in their family crypt, hints of armies on the move and at Winterfell, the potential snowy aftermath of the Battle at Winterfell. It’s clear that this is going to be huge – but it also means that HBO has been surprisingly clumsy about reminding fans that there’s another battle in the offing: the battle for the Iron Throne.

Related: (Theory) Robin Arryn Is King At The End Of Game Of Thrones

In amongst all the Winterfell-Battle goodness, the promos for Game of Thrones have included some fairly obvious nods to the Throne.  The character posters for the final season take the focus away from Winterfell and to King’s Landing, showing each of the major players sitting on the Iron Throne (even the Night King). Another poster combines a dragon with the Iron Throne, showing swords on his forehead in closeup. And finally, there’s a poster showing the main characters all dead in the snow, splayed out to form the shape of the Iron Throne.

All of which would be fine, if it weren’t quite so… obvious. The posters are only a hair short of HBO jumping up and down pointing at the throne, and don’t have the kind of well-considered subtlety that the trailers do when dealing with Winterfell. A few shots of the Iron Throne doesn’t really do enough to balance out the incredible trailers that are focused on the Battle of Winterfell, at least in terms of building up fan excitement.

Of course, it’s not difficult to see why Game of Thrones would focus on the Battle of Winterfell to begin with. Not only is it going to be a truly epic on-screen moment, but it’s also likely to be an episode where some major characters die. Showing footage of characters past that point would be a definite spoiler, and no one wants that, but there are definitely better ways to balance out the buildup between the two major conflicts of the final season.

The question of who will eventually sit on the Iron Throne has been a core part of Game of Thrones for so long that it’s understandable that HBO would feel compelled to triple down on it in the final season’s marketing. However, the show itself has progressed to a point where the fight for the Iron Throne seems almost trivial, what with a wintry apocalypse on the way. Posters like the one showing characters frozen in the shape of the Throne, or the Night King sitting on the Throne, seem to be trying to tie the two big plot threads together, but Jon and Daenerys’ fight is for all of Westeros, not for who gets to sit on the pile of melted swords.
