Leonardo DiCaprio in Talks to Star in Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley

Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham, may have found its leading man in Leonardo DiCaprio. The Academy Award-winning actor is currently in talks to star in the production, with del Toro attached to direct.

The original 1947 Nightmare Alley film was a big budget noir film that centered on the rise and fall of a young con man, Stanton “The Great Stanton” Carlisle (originally played by Tyrone Powers), as he tried to make a career as a carnival swindler and fake psychic who preyed on psychiatric patients. The film was an adaptation based on William Lindsay Grisham’s novel of the same name that came out in 1946. The film script will be penned by del Toro and Kim Morgan. This will be del Toro’s first time directing a feature since his Oscar win for 2017’s The Shape of Water.

Variety reports that DiCaprio is in negotiations to lead del Toro’s take on the source material. The project will be produced by del Toro, J. Miles Davis, and TSG Entertainment and distributed by Fox Searchlight. It’s scheduled to begin shooting this fall, after del Toro has finished assembling his cast. There’s no word yet whether or not DiCaprio would play a direct update of Powers’s version of Stanton as a carnival barker, or if there will be a more modernized take on the character.

DiCaprio has not starred in a major film since his Oscar-winning turn as Hugh Glass in 2015’s The Revenant. That role landed him his first Academy Award, and he’s since been busy developing projects. His next onscreen role will be in the Quentin Tarantino 1960s period piece Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. There’s also a chance that audiences will see him in Martin Scorsese’s next film, Killers of the Flower Moon, before they see him in Nightmare Alley. At the same time, del Toro’s focus has been on his Dreamworks animated series, Trollhunters and 3Below, and a stop-motion retelling of Pinocchio scheduled for a Netflix release in 2021. He serves as writer, director, and producer for all three projects.

DiCaprio and del Toro are both very careful when choosing what films to take on, especially since their respective Oscar wins. If DiCaprio does ultimately sign on as the film’s lead, it’ll undoubtedly attract a large pool of high caliber actors. Because the script is still being written, solid information about the project is scarce. However, with plans to being filming in fall, cast announcements are expected within the next few months. For now, the prospect of the two Oscar winners teaming up for Nightmare Alley will likely keep fans curious and hopeful for del Toro’s return.

Update (11AM EST, April 24): Updated post to clarify that del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is not a remake of the 1947 film but a new adaptation of the 1946 novel.

Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Jon Watts In Talks To Direct Methusaleh Movie

Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Jon Watts is in talks to direct a Methusaleh movie. The successful 2017 Homecoming marked Watts’ third feature film as a director, having previously gained attention for his indie films Cop Car and Clown. In addition to these, Watts has worked extensively in television, and as a music video director.

Most recently, Watts has been finishing work on the follow up to Homecoming, this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, as far as being attached to anything after that movie goes, Watts is currently something of a free agent. And given that he’s already proven himself with a big budget studio film, he might be just the filmmaker that Warner Bros. needs to work on their Methusaleh project, which has reportedly been a priority for years. It’s a project that not a lot is currently known about, aside from the fact that Tom Cruise had originally been interested in playing the titular character, but has since abandoned the role, which was then subsequently snapped up by Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan.

Related: Michael B Jordan To Play An Ageless Man In Methusaleh Movie

As such, Deadline is now reporting that Watts is currently in talks to direct the long-gestating Warner production. At present, Warner is looking to rewrite the current draft of the Methusaleh script, which had originally been written by Tony Gilroy (Rogue One, The Bourne Legacy). Exactly who’ll be hired to tackle Gilroy’s script remains a mystery, but if Watts does sign on to the project, it likely won’t be long before a writer is secured.

The story of Methusaleh is taken from the Bible, and deals with a legendary figure said to have lived to the age of 969. The story has roots in Jewish, Islamic and Christian faiths, though the Warner production doesn’t necessarily sound as though it’s interested in pursuing a biblical epic as Paramount did with 2014’s Darren Aronofsky effort, Noah. Instead, Warner appears to be eager to focus on the abilities of Methusaleh, gained from his extensive years of experience, particularly his vast amount of personal knowledge in science and numerous other academic pursuits. The character is also adept in survival skills and from the sound of things, the Methusaleh depicted in the film will be somewhat middle-aged – focusing on him as a 400-year-old, rather than on his much later and more widely fabled years.

Given that Tom Cruise was once attached to this project as well as the somewhat Henri Ducard/Pai Mei nature of the character, it wouldn’t be surprising if Warner is going to try and build an action franchise out of this one. A well-rounded, wizened action hero who looks as young as Jordan but actually employs hundreds of years of experience and study could be very interesting indeed. We likely won’t know much about Methusaleh until a new script is written, but with the very real prospect of Jon Watts joining Michael B. Jordan, this could be one to keep an eye on.

Mouse Guard Adaptation in Talks to Add Comedian Jake Whitehall

The Mouse Guard adaptation is in talks to add comedian Jack Whitehall. The comic book series has been a bi-monthly release ever since creator David Petersen brought it to life back in 2006. A big screen adaptation has been discussed for years, but it wasn’t until 2016 that Petersen found a studio that shared his vision.

The studio tasked with bringing Mouse Guard to life is Fox, and so far the production is looking as though it’s shaping up into something quite magical. One of the first moves made on the project was to hire Gary Whitta, the writer behind the successful Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to adapt the comic books. The story follows a group of anthropomorphized mice during the Medieval Ages who band together in order to protect other mice and smaller creatures of their realm. While some have previously referred to the series as Game of Thrones with mice, the aim for the big screen adaptation is to create a film that is family friendly, but with real consequences – as is the case with the Star Wars films. So far, Mouse Guard has cast the likes of Idris Elba, Andy Serkis, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Samson Kayo, and Sonoya Mizuno.

According to THR, a new face is about to be added to the film’s ever-growing roster. British comedian Jack Whitehall is reportedly in talks to join Mouse Guard as Kenzie, a staff-wielding member of the guard who typically gets paired with Kayo’s character, Saxson. While Saxson is often portrayed as something of a mischievous trouble maker, Kenzie is more measured and the two reportedly play off one another well, with a bit of a Han Solo/Chewbacca vibe between the characters.

As one of Britain’s fastest rising talents, Whitehall is a well-known comedian and actor in the United Kingdom. After being named Britain’s King of Comedy at the 2012 British Comedy Awards, his stature rapidly grew, and aside from being a regular on a handful of UK-based variety shows, Whitehall also stared in a number of popular television programs. With the arrival of his Netflix series Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father, in which the comedian undertakes different journeys in the company of his stuffy father, Michael, Whitehall received his first substantial exposure in America. Since then, he’s gone on to some small roles in several Hollywood features, and will star in Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming Jungle Cruise.

So far, everything about Mouse Guard’s adaptation looks intriguing. It’s been previously noted that the adaptation will rely on Weta Digital for its stop motion/CG visual effects – the same company that was responsible for The Lord of the Rings, as well as Avatar, with a reported similar style expected to what was seen in the Planet of the Apes films. There’s plenty of room here for a franchise, and from the sounds of it, Fox/Disney are doing everything they can to ensure that when Mouse Guard does arrive in theaters, it will provide an experience unlike any other.

Marvel’s The Eternals: Kumail Nanjiani in Talks to Star

Kumail Nanjiani has entered talks to star in Marvel’s The Eternals movie. Created by Jack Kirby in the mid-1970s, The Eternals comic books revolve around a race of semi-immortal and super-powered beings known as the Eternals, as well as their not-so-lovely relatives the Deviants. Marvel Studios was first rumored to be working on an Eternals film for its Marvel Cinematic Universe almost exactly a year ago, with the plan being to release the movie as part of Phase 4. The project has since gained an official pair of writers in Matthew and Ryan Firpo, as well as a director in the form of celebrated indie filmmaker Chloé Zhao (The Rider).

With Phase 3 of the MCU above to conclude with this month’s Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios intends to get production on The Eternals up and going this year, presumably to make an as-yet unannounced 2020 release date. As a result, the film’s casting process is full underway now, with Angelina Jolie having entered negotiations to play one of the movie’s leads just this past week. Now, another noteworthy actor has entered talks for a leading role in the film.

Related: Theory: Hercules Introduces the Eternals to the MCU

According to THR, Nanjiani is currently in talks to play a leading role in The Eternals. Details on his would-be role are being kept under lock and key at the moment, though the outlet states that Jolie (assuming that her deal closes) is expected to play the Eternal Sersi.

MCU films have had little trouble attracting top-tier talent in recent years, and that continues to be the case with the latest Eternals casting news. In addition to being an Oscar-nominated writer for The Big Sick (which he also starred in), Nanjiani has long been celebrated for his role on HBO’s Silicon Valley, and will star opposite Dave Bautista in this July’s already buzzed about action-comedy, Stuber. The actor is best known for his comedic offerings and will continue to play comical supporting characters in such upcoming movies as June’s Men in Black continuation, Men in Black International. At the same time, he’s started to branch out into more dramatic territory with his performance in The Twilight Zone revival episode “The Comedian”, and may continue to do so on with The Eternals.

Indeed, as famous (or infamous, your pick) as the MCU is for its humor, The Eternals should be more operatic than many of its previous offerings. The film will further break new ground by (reportedly) introducing the MCU’s first openly gay superhero, as played by a queer actor. Be that true or not, The Eternals is shaping up to be very different from anything Nanjiani’s worked on in the past, and should allow him to better showcase his range onscreen. And on top of all that, his casting is a welcome bit of inclusivity for the MCU, what with Nanjiani being the first Pakistani-American to take on a leading role in a Marvel Studios film.

Quiet Place 2: Cillian Murphy in Talks to Join Sequel

Cillian Murphy is in talks to join A Quiet Place 2. The first film in the series from actor-turned-director John Krasinski was something of a surprise smash hit, bringing in over $300 million on an astonishing $17 million budget. Since then, a sequel has been announced, with both Krasinski and co-star Emily Blunt returning.

A big part of the reason for A Quiet Place’s success was its highly unique concept, in which a family struggles to survive after the earth’s population has been decimated by a breed of alien creatures that hunt based on sound. Reduced to having to communicate by whispers and sign language, Krasinski’s character Lee Abbott and his pregnant wife Evelyn (Blunt) rig their rural home with numerous traps and precautions to safeguard their young family. With filming on the sequel reportedly set for this summer, casting rumors have begun to crop up and fans of the original are eager to see exactly who will be joining Krasinski and Blunt this time around.

Related: How A Quiet Place 2 Will Differ From Jaws & Alien Sequels

The latest name currently being circulated for the sequel according to THR is Cillian Murphy. The Irish star is reportedly in talks to join A Quiet Place 2 as a mysterious stranger who joins the Abbott family as they continue to struggle with life on a planet that has been drastically altered from its present state.

Should Murphy officially commit to the upcoming project, it will mark the sequel’s first confirmed new cast member. Previous reports have revealed that child actors Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe will return as the children of Lee and Evelyn, but to date there have been no brand new additions to the cast. As Krasinski – who once again took on scripting duties for the film – has previously mentioned, A Quiet Place 2 may be more open to explore the lives of other survivors beyond the Abbot family. If this is indeed the case, then the inclusion of Murphy could be reflective of the plot, by creating a potentially new hazard for the Abbott family to deal with. Should that be the case, Murphy is indeed an excellent choice to play a villain, with past experience as super villain The Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan’s Batman films.

Sequels to highly successful films are often fraught with risk. Not that all films aren’t filled with a great degree of uncertainty, but this characteristic is typically amplified when the characters and concepts are already familiar to audiences. After making such an impact with the first film, Krasinski definitely has his work cut out for him. The upside to all this, however, is that it is in fact, Krasinski who has once again written the screenplay and who will be returning to the director’s chair. All too often, problems arise when the mastermind behind a successful film’s sequel isn’t involved at any level beyond producing. With this in mind and the potential inclusion of a great actor like Cillian Murphy, A Quiet Place 2 could indeed make some serious noise.

Denzel Washington In Talks For Macbeth Movie From Big Lebowski Co-Director

Denzel Washington is in talks to star alongside Frances McDormand in a new adaptation of Macbeth directed by The Big Lebowski co-helmer Joel Coen. The famous Macbeth stands as one of William Shakespeare’s darkest and most disturbing plays, with its story of a Scottish lord and his wife who murder their way to the throne, only to be haunted by the grim consequences of their deeds.

With its classic story of violence and madness, Macbeth has been wholeheartedly embraced by filmmakers over the decades. The legendary Orson Welles, who was himself a great stage performer before going into movies, adapted the play in 1948 with himself as the title character. Roman Polanski famously staged Macbeth as a film in 1971, just two years after the murder of his wife Sharon Tate, crafting one of the darkest and most violent versions of the play. More recently, the play was adapted by Justin Kurzel with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the lead roles.

As reported by Deadline, Joel Coen of the Coen Brothers writing-directing team is set to tackle Shakespeare’s Macbeth with his own adaptation, and he’s enlisting some heavy-hitting acting talent to help him. Reportedly, Denzel Washington is in talks to tackle the lead role of Macbeth, with Frances McDormand set to play Lady Macbeth. Coen himself is writing the adaptation, with A24 ready to handle distribution.

The team of Coen, Washington and McDormand is certainly a juicy one for film fans. Working alongside his brother Ethan, Coen has snagged 15 Oscar nominations in his career, winning Best Director and Best Picture for 2008’s No Country For Old Men, and snagging screenwriting awards for No Country and 1997’s Fargo. Washington of course has also nabbed his fair share of gold, winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1990 for Glory, and grabbing Best Actor in 2002 for Training Day. He also has a lot of prior experience with Shakespeare, having starred alongside Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson in the 1993 film version of Much Ado About Nothing, while appearing in numerous Shakespeare plays on-stage including Coriolanus, Richard III and Julius Caesar. McDormand, who happens to be married to Coen, also has two Oscars, winning Best Actress for Fargo and for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2017.

The Coens obviously have been major players in movies for several decades now, tackling everything from heavy drama and comedy to musicals and Westerns, with their most recent effort coming in 2018 with the Netflix film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. However, this is the first time one of the Coens will be tackling Shakespeare. Whatever anxiety Coen might be feeling over diving into the realm of the Bard with Macbeth must be somewhat lessened by knowing he has two of the best and most acclaimed actors of their generation set to handle the story’s two pivotal roles.

Angelina Jolie in Talks for MCU Phase 4 Movie The Eternals

Angelina Jolie may be heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to star in The Eternals. Even though Marvel Studios is just weeks away from launching Avengers: Endgame and ending Phase 3 as a result, Phase 4 of the MCU is already taking shape. We’ve known for some time that Spider-Man: Far From Home will help usher in the next wave, but the studio has also been developing several new properties to introduce: including The Eternals.

Based on the Jack Kirby comics, The Eternals is reportedly going to be a story that could span thousands of years in the MCU. The film is going to be directed by Chloe Zhao, who previously was in consideration to direct fellow Marvel flick Black Widow. She’s been attached to the project since last year, and the film has continued to slowly make progress ever since. Character breakdowns surfaced last year as well that helped give an idea of what characters will be featured in the movie, and now we may know who’ll be the first star.

Related: Casting Marvel’s The Eternals Movie

According to THR, Angelina Jolie is in talks to star in The Eternals. There are no details on her role at this time, but the Oscar-winning actress would be a huge start for the ensemble cast regardless. This will be Jolie’s first comic book movie, and her decision to jump aboard the MCU comes after recently working with Disney again on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Jolie’s career has taken many turns over the years, so she’s done everything from being the romantic interest, to becoming an action star, and taking true dramatic turns in front of the camera. Jolie has also focused more on directing and producing in recent years too, but this will not be one of those instances. Marvel’s ability to get Jolie involved with the MCU is a huge get on its own, yet her star power should be a major help to generate interest for a lesser known property like The Eternals.

The biggest question that her casting leaves us with is obviously what role she’ll play. There are four female characters from the aforementioned breakdowns, but only three that Jolie is likely in line for: Sersi, Thena, and Elysius. Sersi is traditionally one of the lead characters in Eternals comics, and Jolie being the first cast member to possibly join does help make this role seem like the right choice. However, such a role would possibly keep Jolie around for multiple films that could require much of her time. Roles like Thena or Elysius could be smaller parts that still allow for longevity, so if Jolie is looking to join the MCU but still have a flexible schedule, these would make more sense.

No matter what role she ends up taking, Jolie’s resumé speaks for itself and would make her a great start to The Eternals‘ cast. Marvel is reportedly also looking to cast their first openly gay male lead for the film, and with the amount of characters that’ll be featured, Jolie is just the first of many new MCU additions. All will be decided in the coming months too, as The Eternals will start filming this fall, as it’s expected to hit theaters in late-2020.

Masters of the Universe: Noah Centineo In Talks To Star As He-Man

Sony’s Masters of the Universe movie may have found its He-Man in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before‘s Noah Centineo. The studio has been looking for a way to get the fantasy project off the ground for years, and they’ve slowly been making progress over the last year or so. David Goyer was previously attached to write and direct the movie, but he ultimately decided to pass on the directing gig just over a year ago, leaving Sony to restart the search.

The studio named Aaron and Adam Nee as Masters of the Universe‘s new directors in April of 2018, well ahead of the film’s December 2019 release date. Sony has since scrapped that date and ordered a rewrite of the script from Iron Man and MIB: International‘s Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. With the script being ironed out, fans of the popular 80s Mattel toys, animated shows, and Dolph Lundgren-led live-action movie have been waiting to see what exactly the take will be.

Related: 15 Shocking Things You Didn’t Know About The Original Masters of the Universe Film

A major piece of the vision may now be in place, as The Wrap reports Noah Centineo is in talks to star as He-Man in Masters of the Universe. Centineo became a major teenage heartthrob last year with his work on To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Before making the jump to shredded, action lead, he’ll be seen in Charlie’s Angels and in To All The Boys 2, which is now filming.

If Centineo’s deal does close, He-Man will be a major role for him to take on. At only 22 years old, he’s likely younger than most would’ve expected for the most powerful man in the universe to be. Centineo is 6’1 though, so he does sport that natural physicality needed for the role. Of course, many will also want to know if Centineo will have He-Man’s traditional blonde flowing hair, but that shouldn’t be too big of a concern if he doesn’t as long as he’s able to bring the right performance.

After the 1980s film went with a completely campy approach to the material, there have been some fans wondering if Masters of the Universe would strike a tone and scope closer to Lord of the Rings this time around. Even though this is just one piece of casting news, Centineo is a charismatic lead who’s excelled with more comedic roles, so this could be what The Nee Brothers and Sony are looking to capture. There are no plot details at this point though and with more information on the movie sure to arrive ahead of its July start to production, it is best to wait and see how Masters of the Universe continues to take shape before jumping to conclusions about the tone and more.

Black Widow Movie: Florence Pugh in Talks for Major Role

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow may have its first new cast member with Fighting With My Family‘s Florence Pugh in talks to join. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently seeing the success that can be had with a female-led movie as Captain Marvel continues to dominate the box office. The Brie Larson solo movie is the first for a woman in the MCU, but it won’t be the last.

Next up for Marvel Studios appears to be the long awaited solo film for Scarlett Johansson’s popular assassin. Johansson debuted as Natasha Romanoff back in 2010’s Iron Man 2 and has become a prominent member of the MCU in the years that followed, but it’s only now that progress is being made on giving her a movie all her own. Black Widow will be directed by Cate Shortland based on a script by Captain Marvel‘s Jac Schaeffer, and several recent reports indicated casting was picking up.

Related: Fan-Made Marvel Video Highlights MCU Ladies On International Women’s Day

Now thanks to a report by THR, it looks like it’ll be Florence Pugh who’s the first co-star for Johansson in Black Widow. Pugh received great acclaim for her role in Lady Macbeth in 2016, and returned to period dramas last year with Outlaw King on Netflix. She most recently starred in the biopic Fighting With My Family, but will now join her biggest project yet with Black Widow. There’s not many details on her character currently available, other than being “a spy on the same level” as Romanoff.

The addition of Pugh is the latest development for Black Widow, but one that’s been on the horizon. Pugh was previously among a group of candidates for the second female lead role that surfaced online. At that time, it was reported that Emma Watson was the front runner, but it’ll be the 23-year-old rising star who takes the coveted role instead. Unfortunately, the vague spy description does not offer any additional insights into what character from Marvel Comics she could possibly be playing – although Yelena Belova is one possibility.

As long as Pugh’s deal for Black Widow closes, the casting process for the film will now turn to some of the other roles reportedly available. Marvel’s said to be interested in André Holland for the main villain role, and also may be eyeing Rachel Weisz and Alec Baldwin for a pair of Americans. In addition to these roles, a recent rewrite of the script reportedly added another female part to the film, so Marvel will also need to fill this role. While we’ll have to wait and see who else joins, Black Widow‘s cast is off to a strong start with Johansson and Pugh leading the way.

Ghostbusters 3: Finn Wolfhard & Carrie Coon In Talks To Star

Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters 3 has found two of its leads in Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon. Sony’s fun supernatural franchise had long been on hiatus prior to Paul Feig rebooting the property a few years back with an all-female cast. After the movie fell short of box office success, there were no plans for what would come next – until a surprise sequel to the original two films was announced.

The film announcement was followed by a surprise teaser trailer that uncovered the original Ecto-1 Ghostbusters car once more. Ghostbusters 3 will take place in the same universe as the original two films led by Bill Murray, but this time the cast will focus on a group of teenagers. Plot details have been difficult to come by, but the sequel is moving quickly. Sony and Reitman have already made substantial progress so far, and now it appears they’ve found their first two cast members.

Related: The Real Ghostbusters 3 Happened in 2009 (And It Was Perfect)

A new report from Variety states that Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and The Leftovers‘ Carrie Coon are in talks to join the cast. Coon is reportedly a single mother whose family is at the center of the story, with Wolfhard playing her son. Elsewhere, EW reports that the film is not going to center around teenagers as previously believed, and it will be the entire family (led by Coon and Wolfhard) who lead this next Ghostbusters entry.

This news comes on the heels of reports that Reitman was going to meet with possible leads last weekend for Ghostbusters 3. With Coon as the reported lead, this will potentially be the large movie role she’s yet to get. She has repeatedly impressed on the small screen with The LeftoversFargo, and The Sinner, but her film roles have been relatively minor. Coon appeared in Gone GirlThe Post, and Widows, but her biggest role was voice-only as Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War. If her character’s family is as important to the story as this report indicates, she very well could potentially be the daughter of an original Ghostbuster.

This could also make Wolfhard the grandson of an original Ghostbuster, which is a role that is easy to see him excelling in. He’s already shown in Stranger Things what he could look like in the traditional Ghostbuster attire, but now he’ll get to wear a proper Proton Pack. His stardom from the Netflix hit series should help the movie too, as should his additional breakout comedic role in IT. With the reported summer filming start, it may not be too much longer before we know who else will join Coon and Wolfhard for Ghostbusters 3, but they’re a great start.
