The Fast and the Furious franchise has gone from strength to strength, incorporating new characters and going bigger and better and even more ludicrous with each installment.

Now, the franchise is becoming its own fully-fledged cinematic universe with spin-offs and multiple sequels all on the way. As with any series – although more with this one than the average franchise – there have been ups and downs. So, here are The Fast And The Furious Movies, Ranked By Rotten Tomatoes Score.

8 Fast & Furious (29%)

With its fourth installment, the Fast & Furious franchise threw out the established focus on street racing and became a more straightforward action series, with Vin Diesel returning. There were still plenty of cars, and not a single major set piece that didn’t involve cars in some way, but the characters became vaguely defined mercenaries.

As a reinvention of the franchise, Fast & Furious didn’t quite reach the heights of gleeful absurdity that the later installments would. Still, there are a couple of wonderfully high-octane action sequences, and the seeds of what the movies would eventually become are clearly there.

7 2 Fast 2 Furious (36%)

2 Fast 2 Furious is a unique case for an installment in the Fast & Furious franchise in that it doesn’t tie into the wider storyline of the rest of the series. Instead, it’s a standalone story following Brian O’Conner and Roman Pearce’s attempts to bring down a vicious drug kingpin.

The sequel might not be perfect, and its script leaves a lot to be desired, but the great John Singleton’s direction and the on-screen chemistry of Paul Walker and Tyrese Gibson make it, at the very least, an entertaining blockbuster. While it doesn’t have a brain, it does have a heart – and it is a rousing, crowd-pleasing thrill-ride.

6 The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift (38%)

Is a Fast & Furious movie without Vin Diesel or Paul Walker really a Fast & Furious movie? To be fair, Diesel makes a cameo appearance at the end (which he only agreed to do in exchange for ownership of the Riddick franchise), but it’s too little, too late.

Without the bromance of Dom and Brian at the center of its plot, Tokyo Drift devolves into yet another run-of-the-mill, by-the-numbers, automobile-based action movie. It feels like a Fast & Furious rip-off as opposed to striking the unique balance of heart and insanity that the franchise masters at its best. Aside from Han, who fans still want justice for, there isn’t anyone in this loosely related threequel that we really care about at all.

5 The Fast And The Furious (53%)

While its story of an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a sports-based criminal organization and finding himself getting too close to the perps is shamefully similar to the Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze vehicle Point Break, The Fast and the Furious is, mainly thanks to the chemistry shared by Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, an agreeable action thriller – and it’s also a visual treat for car fanatics.

The success of The Fast and the Furious franchise is all down to the first movie feeling like a breath of fresh air when it was released in 2001. It was the sort of nitro-boosted, rubber-burning action movie that had been replaced by CG-laden snooze-fests like the Gone in 60 Seconds remake.

4 The Fate Of The Furious (67%)

Unfortunately for The Fate of the Furious, it faced the monumental challenge of being the first movie without the involvement of Paul Walker. It had to somehow honor his legacy, show how the franchise would continue without him, and be an entertaining movie, all at the same time.

Also, it made the controversial decision to turn Dom Toretto into a villain. However, against all odds, the eighth movie in the Fast & Furious franchise managed to be more than decent. With submarines tearing through ice and Dwayne Johnson redirecting torpedoes with his bare hands, the set pieces topped the previous ones yet again.

3 Fast & Furious 6 (70%)

To be fair to Fast & Furious 6, it had to follow up Fast Five. While it wasn’t quite as stunning as its predecessor, the sixth installment held its own. Taking the crew to London where the fifth one took them to Rio, Fast & Furious 6 has all the mega-sized action you could ask for from one of these movies.

It culminates in that airport runway sequence, which is one of the most memorable and talked-about action scenes in recent memory (even if it was mostly discussed because, at 13 minutes long with a plane going 120 mph, that runway would have to be 26 miles long).

2 Fast Five (77%)

The moviegoing public was taken by surprise in 2011 when Fast Five came along. For the first time in the franchise’s history, critics and audiences were genuinely impressed with the craft of a Fast & Furious movie.

A heist movie set in Rio de Janeiro, Fast Five was bolstered by visceral, genuinely thrilling action set pieces and the cast becoming a true ensemble for the first time. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joined the cast in this one, and it’s fair to say that, while he didn’t necessarily singlehandedly save the franchise, his irresistible charm and rising star power did go a long way towards digging it out of a slump.

1 Furious 7 (81%)

There’s a special place in every Fast & Furious fan’s heart for Furious 7 because it was Paul Walker’s final movie before his tragic and untimely passing. The seventh movie has some of the franchise’s most memorable action sequences – from the inter-skyscraper car jump to the vehicular skydiving – as well as a stronger focus on the tenets of family than ever.

As a classically action-packed, adrenaline-fueled adventure, it was the perfect send-off for Walker and his character Brian. Plus, it ended with a suitably touching tribute to the franchise’s fallen star that left not a single eye in the audience dry.

Marvel Phase 3 — the final group of films in The Infinity Saga — just wrapped up with the premiere of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Today, we’re looking at all the Phase 3 Marvel films and seeing how they stack up against one another according to Rotten Tomatoes.

There are eleven Phase 3 films in total, so before we kick off this top-ten list, we’re shouting it out to Captain Marvel. Carol Danvers, maybe your movie ranks last with a Tomatometer score of 78%, but we still think you’re great. So now that we have that covered, it’s time to see how the rest of Marvel’s Phase 3 scores based on critic reviews. Let’s get to it!

10 Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (84%)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 gave Chris Pratt another run as the quirky, retro Star-Lord, along with the rest of the unique Guardians. Critics found the film to be stocked with action, full of beautiful visuals, and loaded with spunky humor. However, they also found it to be not as exciting and original as its predecessor.

Even so, the film got itself an 84% and a certified-fresh rating. Audiences were also pleased with the film overall, giving it an 87%.

9 Avengers: Infinity War (85%)

Infinity War had the Marvel gang teaming up to defeat Thanos before he destroyed the universe. Combining an ensemble cast with scary-high stakes, the film came out with a certified-fresh Tomatometer rating of 85%. Additionally, it received a similarly impressive audience score of 91%.

The handful of critics who didn’t like the film found the CGI to be gimmicky and the story to be unoriginal. Hardcore Marvel fans, on the other hand, simply anticipated the next installment even more after this one came to a dramatic and tragic close.

8 Ant-Man And The Wasp (88%)

The exciting sequel to Ant-Man had Paul Rudd’s superhero teaming up with Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp for all the action. Critics loved it, earning the movie an 88% Tomatometer score.

The leading duo’s chemistry combined with Rudd’s already charming on-screen presence allowed the film to feel fresh and engaging. Some thought it didn’t match the charisma and unique charm of the first Ant-Man, but most begged to differ. Viewers left it with a 76% audience score.

7 Doctor Strange (89%)

Doctor Strange gave Benedict Cumberbatch the chance to shape the time-travel superhero’s origin stories. He certainly did not disappoint.

While a handful of critics found the titular character to be unconnectable and the film to be an unnecessary addition to an already-huge franchise, it still raked in the love. Its audience score stands at 86% based on over 109,000 ratings.

6 Spider-Man: Far From Home (90%)

The latest film to swoop into the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) taking on his next adventure. This time, it takes place during Peter Parker’s European vacation with his classmates instead of at home in New York.

Critics loved the film for blending young romance and superhero action. It’s more down-to-earth than some films in the MCU, coming off as both engaging and fun. Some called out the film for having messy character arcs, poor visual effects, and a complicated plot. But is it better to listen to those people, or is it better to hear out the others who gave it a 90% Tomatometer rating? Viewers liked it even more, with 96% of audience reviews coming in positive.

5 Captain America: Civil War (91%)

Captain America: Civil War saved theatergoers in 2016 with a blockbuster-worthy plot, courageous themes, and a ton of added depth. It followed Steve Rogers and Tony Stark’s competing agendas, which ultimately led them to grow back together even stronger than before in the final few MCU installments.

With some critics even calling it the best Marvel movie to ever be made, the film scored itself a 91% on the Tomatometer. The generally positive movie-goer consensus earned it an 89% audience score. Some found it to be over-the-top, but it is a Marvel movie. The thrill is just a part of the journey.

4 Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%)

This Spider-Man reboot had a lot at stake, with the classic hero being reimagined for a third time since Sam Raimi’s trilogy and Sony’s two films. Thankfully, it delivered. The action film earned a 92% Tomatometer score and an 88% audience score.

Homecoming was praised for — while being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — not getting weighed down by it. The film stood on its own just as much as it stayed a part of the franchise. A few critics found it to be “just another Marvel movie,” but we’re choosing to ignore that notion.

3 Thor: Ragnarok (93%)

Thor’s second sequel is funnier, more colorful, and more exciting than its predecessors. Everything about it is bright and original, and critics noticed. Sure, some found the jokes to be a bit overdone, but the film still pulled out a 93% Tomatometer score and a comparable 87% audience score.

The cast was charming and the chemistry was magnetic. The difference between this one and the previous Thor installment is very noticeable.

2 Avengers: Endgame (94%)

The grand finale to many Marvel characters’ story arcs was met with praise from critics and audiences. The certified-fresh Avengers: Endgame scored a high 94% percent from critics and 91% from audiences. While the epic conclusion was over three hours long, it managed to entertain and captivate viewers for all of them.

There were a handful of critics who found it to be filled with a lot of nothing, but there were even more critics who found it to be jam-packed with everything they’d been waiting for.

1 Black Panther (97%)

Stealing the show with a 97% Tomatometer rating is none other than Black Panther. Its immersive story full of complex characters, stunning aesthetics, and powerful themes have it topping not just our list, but the lists of critics everywhere.

While not every person loved the film, with some calling Black Panther “average,” they are in a pretty small minority. The audience rating came in at 79% with many believing it to be a thrilling and welcome big-budget blockbuster.

Batman is arguably the superhero with the most disparity in his big-screen appearances. Zack Snyder may have given us a Superman with no red undies, but Joel Schumacher gave us a Batman with nipples on his suit, Chris McKay gave us a zany Lego version of Batman, and Christopher Nolan gave us a cinematic study of the American city disguised as a Batman movie.

The Batman movies are a curious thing, because a couple of them are considered to be among the greatest movies ever made and a couple of them are considered to be among the worst movies ever made. So, here is Every Batman Movie, Ranked By Rotten Tomatoes Score.

10 Batman & Robin (11%)

This movie was so bad that Joel Schumacher apologized for it. Everything in the movie looks like it was designed to be a toy, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze has far more corny one-liners than credibility, and by adding nipples and a codpiece to the iconic Batsuit, Schumacher managed to make the Dark Knight, the most serious character in comics history, laughable.

Some critics also noted the movie’s homoerotic overtones – not in a subtle Fight Club way; in a distracting, on-the-nose, closeups-of-Batman’s-butt way. Although it’s dressed up like a gloomy $160 million blockbuster, Batman & Robin feels like a bad, overlong episode of the ‘60s TV series.

9 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (27%)

Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has the components of a good movie, but it has the same problem as Iron Man 2 – focusing too much on setting up the wider cinematic universe to be a great film in its own right – and worse than that, the setup went nowhere. At least with Iron Man 2, all the Easter eggs were leading somewhere.

In BvS, it seems as though the producers were just throwing random flashbacks and flashforwards and Easter eggs at the wall to see what stuck, and sadly, none of it did. But Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight had the makings of an excellent Batman.

8 Batman Forever (39%)

Sure, Batman Forever is camp, but at least Jim Carrey’s performance as the Riddler works in the unusual tone’s favor, even if Tommy Lee Jones feeds off his energy and gives us a wackadoo Two-Face. Val Kilmer did a pretty good job of playing both a suave Bruce Wayne and a cool-as-a-cucumber Caped Crusader, but problems start to arise when Chris O’Donnell’s Robin shows up.

Robin is Batman’s young mentor. He works best as a naive kid who isn’t ready to fight crime. Their on-screen relationship should be similar to Tony Stark and Peter Parker in the MCU. O’Donnell’s Robin was in his mid-twenties.

7 Justice League (40%)

With Superman absent for most of Justice League, the burden fell on Batman to lead the team, and that felt disingenuous to the character. He’s not a leader; he’s a lone wolf. It’s a shame that Warner Bros. threw out a lot of Zack Snyder’s story ideas and instead reshaped the script to copy what worked with The Avengers (including hiring Joss Whedon to add humor, for God knows what reason), because it made the movie a total mess.

Snyder initially wanted a distant-future setting, an evil Superman in a black suit, and an expansion of the “Knightmare” concept. If Warner Bros. had been willing to take those risks, perhaps this would be a lot higher on the list.

6 Batman (71%)

Tim Burton was the perfect choice to direct a Batman movie, because his sumptuous gothic visuals go hand-in-hand with the world of Bruce Wayne. His Gotham City landscapes were inspired by Fritz Lang’s seminal sci-fi epic Metropolis, while Jack Nicholson’s Joker is straight out of a horror movie.

Burton’s take on Batman is far more stylized than Nolan’s, but that doesn’t mean it’s worse. Batman is one of the most groundbreaking and influential comic book movies of all time, since it told studios that audiences would turn out in droves to see a darker, gloomier, more adult-oriented superhero film if it was well-made.

5 Batman Returns (78%)

The Rotten Tomatoes algorithm judges Tim Burton’s second big-screen take on the Batman comics to be superior to his first, and while Batman Returns wasn’t as revolutionary as the first one, Burton did go bigger and better with the sequel. This movie introduced the notion of two villains in the same movie – a perfectly cast Danny DeVito as the Penguin opposite an equally perfectly cast Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman – and that’s a formula that’s carried through the Batman movies ever since.

Batman Returns is a little gloomier and scarier than Batman (the rule of thumb with sequels is to go darker, but there wasn’t much darker territory for Burton to cover after his 1989 original), but the focus is still on character-building, plotting, and superhero action.

4 Batman Begins (84%)

Origin stories, by their very nature, aren’t very exciting. We don’t want to watch a guy training to be a superhero – we want to watch a superhero fighting crime. However, with Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan did a fine job of making an origin story movie that wasn’t boring.

When Bruce Wayne is training with the League of Shadows, we’re not waiting for him to become Batman, because we’re intrigued. What helps is that Nolan explores the origin of Batman beyond simply showing why he hates crime and dresses like a bat. For the first time on the big screen, Nolan showed us how Batman learned to fight.

3 The Dark Knight Rises (87%)

Third movies are tricky, because they have to build on the first two, conclude the trilogy, and live up to the enormous hype. In the case of The Dark Knight Rises, that hype was ridiculous. Christopher Nolan had to top The Dark Knight, which many critics consider to be one of the greatest movies ever made, and to his credit, he did a pretty good job.

He followed up the opening IMAX bank heist with an opening IMAX plane heist; he followed up Heath Ledger’s Joker with Tom Hardy’s Bane (not quite as chilling or mesmerizing, but arguably as iconic); and he followed up Batman sacrificing his reputation with Batman sacrificing himself. The Dark Knight Rises may not have bested The Dark Knight – and, to be fair, that was probably impossible – but it came pretty darn close.

2 The Lego Batman Movie (90%)

This Batman-centric spin-off from The Lego Movie was far better than it had any right to be, to put it lightly. Chris McKay used the opportunities presented by the silliness of Lego animation and no need to tie the film into a wider universe to throw everything we’ve ever wanted to see in a Batman movie at the screen.

On the whole, The Lego Batman Movie is a spot-on parody of the Batman comics – showing Bruce Wayne as an immature man-child who refuses to grow up, reducing Batman and the Joker’s relationship to a romcom-esque “will they/won’t they?” dynamic etc. – but it all has a lot of heart.

1 The Dark Knight (94%)

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight has the freshest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Batman movie, which will surely surprise no one. Heath Ledger set the gold standard for cinematic supervillains with his portrait of the Joker as an unpredictable agent of chaos, while Christian Bale added more depth to Batman’s dual nature than he did before and subtle performances from Michael Caine as Alfred and Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon built on the film’s overriding humanity.

The Dark Knight is a Michael Mann-style thriller that explores crime and corruption in Gotham in a way that feels as real as The Wire’s study of crime and corruption in Baltimore.

When you think of Disney Channel Original Movies, you probably don’t think about how they stack up from a critical perspective. Lucky for you, we do.

While these direct-to-TV Disney films are full of cheesy lines and sweet stories, we were wondering how non-tweenage audiences felt about them. It lead us to ask, which Disney Channel Original Movie is rated highest by critics? We turned to Rotten Tomatoes to find some answers.

There are over one hundred Disney Channel Original Movies, and we combed through all of them so you don’t have to. While plenty of Disney Channel Original Movies didn’t get a tomatometer rating including The Color of Friendship, Princess Protection Program, and Cow Belles, there were nine popular films that earned themselves a score. We’re here to let you know how they all rank together.

Grab some popcorn and dim the lights. Here are the most highly rated Disney Channel Original Movies, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

9 Camp Rock (20%)

The original Camp Rock only pulled itself a 20% on the tomatometer based on five reviews. The consensus was that while the movie was enjoyable, it wasn’t anything spectacular. Furthermore, reviewers criticized it’s bland High School Musical knockoff-qualities, but praised its cast containing Demi Lovato and The Jonas Brothers.

Despite the low critic score, the average viewer loved this film, with the audience score ranking in at 75%. Yes, it was cheesy, but that was part of its charm.

8 Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (40%)

While the follow-up to Camp Rock won over at least one more critic, earning itself a 40% tomatometer score, viewers found the second film to be a downgrade from the first. The film’s audience score landed at 55%.

Critics and casual viewers alike seemed to enjoy the soundtrack but found that the film promoted its music more than its music promoted the film.

The storyline may have been cliche, but the movie was full of tween-targeted energy. And of course, the Jo Bros are still in this one, so it might be worth a second look for that reason alone.

7 Jump In! (50%)

This 2007 Disney Channel Original Movie follows Corbin Bleu’s character Izzy, who trades in his boxing dreams for competitive jump roping. He also may or may not fall in love with his talented team member played by Keke Palmer along the way.

Three critics liked the movie for targeting the right crowd and keeping the energy up, while three others found the storyline to be too predictable and cliche to be enjoyable.

Audiences similarly scored it at 61%. This film was released right after Bleu’s success in the original High School Musical, so it definitely drew in a similar crowd.

6 High School Musical (56%)

Arguably the most iconic Disney Channel Original Movie of all time, High School Musical — while forever remembered by tweens of the 2000s — was not some perfect masterpiece. That being said, it hit all the right notes by combining the things Disney’s target-audience related to including school, music, and sports.

Let’s also not forget the film’s charming sort of cheesiness. The critics’ 56% tomatometer score came from all the films “pop fluff,” but the audience’s 74% came from the film’s likeability — and that was before all the nostalgia set in.

5 High School Musical 2 (57%)

Edging itself slightly above its predecessor is the summer country club follow-up to High School Musical. Critics praised it for its light-hearted magic, catchy songs, and cohesive narrative. Others believed the soundtrack didn’t soar quite as high as the original and that the overall hokiness of the film made it annoying. Audiences decently enjoyed this film, giving it a solid 72%.

High School Musical 2 happened to break Disney Channel Original Movie records by getting itself 17.2 million views upon its first broadcast.

4 Twitches (60%)

Based on the book series of the same name, Twitches‘ story centers on a set of twin sisters with magic who were born to a witch on Halloween night. Although they were separated at birth, they find themselves reuniting on their twenty-first birthday.

Some critics called it magical and cheesy. Other found that it didn’t stand out among other Disney Channel Original Movies, and that it lacked the sparkle it was aiming for. Either way, the audience score is set at 65%. While most have fond memories of this twisted tale, not all share this positive opinion.

3 Descendants 2 (80%)

Descendants, which follows the children of Disney’s most popular villans, premiered to commercial success in 2015. Two years later, its sequel did the same.

The musical fantasy-comedy sequel was praised for its strong female roles, a better villain, and a clever setup. Although with less adult characters taking on critical roles as compared to its predecessor, the film cemented itself as a colorful tale for a younger demographic.

Descendants 2 has a 74% audience score, and the third installment in the franchise is due out in August.

2 Teen Beach Movie (86%)

Teen Beach Movie is what happens when you combine suffer kids with ’60s biker gangs and some crazy-catchy music. While not everyone loved its intentionally corny lines and quirky characters, its nod to classic beach films and entertaining musical numbers were well-praised. Additionally, the brightly colored aesthetics, dynamic relationships, and time-warp storyline were loved.

The film scored itself a 72% audience score based on 2,684 reviews. It also attracted a hefty Disney Channel Original Movie viewership, attracting 8.4 million viewers during its first run.

1 Kim Possible (100%)

The 2019-released Kim Possible received six critic reviews, all of which were overwhelmingly positive. The film acted as the live-action remake the original series deserved, and lead actress Sadie Stanley was praised for her performance.

The new film has Kim balancing high school and fighting crime alongside a cast of goofy and endearing characters. What more could we ask for?

While an audience score has not yet been released for the film, those have seen it have left glowing reviews despite its low viewership. In fact, its original broadcast attracted only 1.2 million viewers, making it the lowest-viewed Disney Channel Original Movie of all time. Pay no attention to those stats, though. If you liked Kim Possible growing up, you’ll be charmed by its newest companion film.

The Lion King debuts to a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes after the first reviews are published. In the last handful of years, Disney has had great success producing re-imaginings of some of their most beloved animated classics. Most recently, Aladdin became a major box office smash, surprisingly moving past the $900 million mark worldwide. Others, like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, proved to be sizable draws themselves and demonstrated there was an audience for these retellings. To the shock of no one, Disney has plenty more on the way.

Up next is a new rendition of The Lion King, a remake of the 1994 animated classic that remains a beloved and treasured installment in the Disney canon. Directed by The Jungle Book’s Jon Favreau, there’s been plenty of hype and anticipation surrounding the project, particularly after the all-star cast was announced. The Lion King is poised to be one of the biggest box office hits of the year, evidenced by the trailer breaking viewership records and marketing continuing to drum up excitement. And while The Lion King is sure to be a commercial success, it’s not going to go down as a critical darling.

Today, the Lion King review embargo lifted, and after the first wave was published, the film has a Rotten score on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. As of this writing, it stands at 58% with 87 reviews counted. A critics consensus has already emerged:

Though it can take pride in its visual achievements, this reimagined The Lion King is a by-the-numbers retelling that lacks the energy and heart that made the original so beloved-though for some fans that may just be enough.

This development is a little surprising, since Lion King social media reactions released earlier this week painted a more positive picture. On social media, most appeared to be in agreement that The Lion King was an astounding technical achievement and praised the efforts of the actors involved (most notably Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa). One common critique of those bite-sized reviews was that the photorealistic animals (obviously) couldn’t emote like they do in the original animated movie, but overall people seemed to enjoy it. The full reviews are more mixed, however. Everyone is quick to acknowledge the incredible visual effects that were used to bring the story to life, but for some that wasn’t enough to make up for the film’s shortcomings. An argument can be made that The Lion King is an exercise of style over substance.

That’s been the fate of many of these Disney remakes; even the ones that go down as being financially successful are largely seen as hollow retellings that lack the magic and imagination of their animated counterparts. The business incentive behind this endeavor was always clear, but from a creative standpoint, Disney’s in a tough spot. It’s always difficult to remake an acclaimed film, since there’s little (if anything) to improve upon. The best movie remakes are the ones that take an intriguing premise with potential and make the most of it after the initial attempt was underwhelming (Ocean’s Eleven, etc.). The Lion King will make money this summer, but it sounds like rewatching the original would be a more rewarding experience.

Though movie review aggregators have courted a bit of controversy in the past year, they’re still an indispensable tool for polling the opinions of the public and professional critics alike regarding the merits of any film that hopes to catch fire at the box office.

Among these, Rotten Tomatoes remains the gold standard: able to make or break any flick with its “certified fresh” rating, which has come to be regarded as an industry-recognized stamp of approval. Every year, however, a bevy of films receive the dreaded “rotten” label, but only a handful fall below the twentieth percentile and an even smaller number are permanently saddled with the 0% rating. Here are ten of the worst films of 2018, according to the website.

10 The Darkest Minds: 17%

This adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s teen dystopian novel isn’t less a satisfying film than a feature-length table setting (throat clearing may be more like it) for a franchise that likely won’t come.

Audiences already fatigued from post-apocalyptic kiddie fiction on the big screen like The Hunger Games and Divergent series turned their back on it, and critics saw through the final product to the money-hungry intentions behind this wholly derivative production.

9 Truth or Dare: 16%

In a seeming experiment to test brand-loyalty, Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare put the reigning horror studio’s name right there in the title to sell this turkey to audiences who could smell its stink a mile away.

And it worked: the film was a box office success, grossing $95 million worldwide against its $3.5 million production budget, while critics were entirely unenthused by what they considered a largely tame, paint-by-numbers spook show.

8 Robin Hood: 15%

It seems that every generation gets a new, increasingly worse version of the tights-wearing robber of the rich. Seriously, just by charting the average critic score from the character’s apex as a mustachioed Errol Fynn in 1938 (100% fresh) on down through Disney’s animals-only adaptation in 1973 (52%), to Kevin Costner’s 1991 misfire, Prince of Thieves (51%) and the Ridley Scott’s 2010 riff on the legend (41%), the character has become the poster boy for diminishing returns.

At the absolute bottom of the barrel, you’ll find last year’s Robin Hood–a rendition that plays fast and loose with the source material for an irritating, contemporary-flavored take on a classic property.

7 Life Itself: 13%

The runaway success of NBC’s This Is Us, notwithstanding, writer/director Dan Fogelman has a reputation for passing off the lugubrious as the profound, and this tendency reaches maximum excruciation with this mawkish and manipulative screen debut.

This “it’s all connected” melodrama was the burgeoning Amazon Studios’ first big loser, falling well-below its projected box-office gross in its premiere week in the second worst opening since 1982 by a film that opened at over 2,500 theaters. Critics described it as “cringe-worthy” ” at best, “misogynistic” at worst, and Fogelman seems content to blame anyone but himself for the failure of his masterpiece of misery.

6 Fifty Shades Freed: 12%

The Rotten Tomatoes score for the abortive climax of the much maligned, much tweeted-about, S&M-for-the-stroller-set series ties with the trilogy’s middle entry, with both falling a bit below the first film, which is practically sitting pretty (comparatively) at 25%.

Though Dakota Johnson’s turn as Anastasia Steele still received the faintest praise for keeping this barely watchable, critics were all too happy to celebrate the long-awaited death of a series that sold itself on spice but was ultimately bland and conservative in its messaging.

5 Peppermint: 12%

Jennifer Garner may have played the mom we all wish we had in Love, Simon, but Peppermint squanders that warm parental pathos in a dusty vigilante tale that utterly wastes her.

It may have done fair business at the box office, but critics found the film ’s sociopolitical blindspots outright offensive (similarly to Eli Roth’s ill-advised Death Wish remake) and pointed out that Hollywood still, mystifying, seems uncertain just how to make a female-led action movie work.

4 Billionaire Boys Club: 7%

A macho crime caper that plays like Wolf of Wall Street: The Next Generation, this film about a group of wealthy young douches engaging in dirty deals and deadly antics came and went without a single note of fanfare.

Not only does it have the unpleasant distinction of being one of the last films made by Kevin Spacey before the accusations against him gained ground, but its domestic opening weekend box office take of just $618 was the lowest of his career, making his fall from grace all but complete.

3 Slender Man: 7%

This dead-on-arrival take on creepypasta’s favorite ghoul was panned by both audiences and critics alike for its nonsensical story, one-dimensional characters, poor effects and total lack of scares.

Adding insult to injury, Sony tied up the release of an independent feature, Flay to protect the rights to the character in a hawkish legal move that looked patently ridiculous when audiences finally saw the final product that the indie was supposedly riding the coattails of.

2 211: 5%

Though Nicolas Cage got some of his best notices in recent memory with Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy last year, it just wouldn’t be a ten worst list without the infamously off-the-wall actor.

A direct-to-video actioner, 211 is bloated with cliches and caused Frank Scheck of the Hollywood Reporter to lament: “It’s probably foolish to wish that Nicolas Cage would once again make movies as good as Adaptation and Leaving Las Vegas. But is it too much to ask that he go back to the comparative glory days of Con Air and The Rock?.”

2018 produced multiple films that received the big goose egg from critics (Reprisal, Father of the Year) but none had the buzz of Gotti, an unmitigated disaster starring John Travolta as the infamous crime boss.

This biopic not only failed to turn a profit at the box office, but critics chafed at the film’s characterization of the brutal don as just another family guy–a slap in the face to the victims of his myriad crimes and their loved ones.

Power Rangers’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Better Than Justice League’s

Power Rangers may not have beaten Justice League at the box-office but the film still managed to score higher on Rotten Tomatoes. Power Rangers was the big screen comeback for the iconic franchise, with the previous movie being 1997’s Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. The new film starred Elizabeth Banks and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and took a more grounded tone to the somewhat cheesy source material.

The movie also came out in 2017, the same year as Justice League. Zack Snyder’s film went through a famously troubled production, with the studio concerned over the film’s tone following the polarising response to Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Snyder stepped away from the project due to a family tragedy, with Joss Whedon jumping onboard to oversee extensive reshoots and re-edits. The results were far from seamless, with most reviews pointing out the clash of styles between Snyder and his replacement.

The response to both high-profile blockbusters was very mixed, but Power Rangers Rotten Tomatoes score shows the film had a warmer critical reception than Justice League. Power Rangers currently sits at 49% based on 162 reviews. While the film was criticized for its strange tonal shifts and product placement, the casting was well received and the film was noted for being the first to feature an LGBTQ superhero in Becky G’s Yellow Ranger.

Justice League, on the other hand, sits at 40% based on 362 reviews. The film received a litany of bad reviews based on the clash of tones between Snyder and Whedon’s footage, the uninspired story and villain and the quality of the CGI, particularly with regard to Henry Cavill’s upper lip. Cavill was shooting Mission: Impossible – Fallout during the reshoot period for Justice League but was unable to shave off his mustache for the additional filming, leading to it being badly airbrushed over in the final product.

While Power Rangers Rotten Tomatoes score is higher, it should be noted Justice League received a 73% audience score, compared to Power Rangers 66% score. Justice League also received 200 more reviews than Power Rangers and was the definite champion at the box-office. Justice League grossed over $650 million worldwide, compared to Power Rangers modest $142 million haul.

Justice League was supposed to be the movie that cemented the DCEU, but the critical and commercial response has seen them move away from it. There’s no sign of a sequel, Ben Affleck has since departed the franchise and Aquaman was a much bigger hit. Power Rangers Rotten Tomatoes score aside, the movie was a definite a box-office letdown, though the merchandise sales mean that while a sequel is still possible, a total reboot is the more likely option.

Shazam! Is Officially Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes

Director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam!, the latest entry into Warner Bros.’ DCEU film franchise, is officially Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. In the time since Zack Snyder was let go from his position as creative leader of the DCEU, the filmmaker has continued to reveal more and more about what his original plans for the franchise involved. While many fans still daydream about what might’ve been had Snyder been allowed to realize his DCEU vision, for better or worse, Snyder’s often gloomy tone seems gone from the onscreen DC world for good.

Last year’s Aquaman movie directed by James Wan served to inject a new playful, fun-loving spirit into the DCEU that audiences took to like fish to Arthur Curry. Sure, some argued that this new tone and style made the DCEU too similar to the MCU, but over $1 billion in box office receipts later, Wan’s approach seems to have worked triumphantly. While it’s going to be a long four-year wait for Aquaman 2, there was never really a question it was coming, at least once those grosses started rolling in.

This injection of playful humor into the DCEU by all accounts majorly continues with Shazam!, set to hit theaters next weekend. Of course, if any DCEU premise calls for hilarity, it’s the one where teenage boy Billy Batson (Asher Angel) becomes a full-grown superhero (Zachary Levi) simply by saying the name of the wizard Shazam. Yet again though, this added humor seems to be working, judging by the fact that Shazam! was just Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, with an impressive 93% score.

For those unaware, there are specific requirements that must be met to earn the coveted Certified Fresh seal. For one, a film must maintain a Tomatometer score of 75% or higher. Additionally, a film must have at least five reviews by “Top Critics,” and at least 80 reviews counted total for a wide-release title like Shazam! Movies in limited release only require 40 reviews counted to be Certified Fresh.

As a testament to the DCEU’s negative track record when it comes to critical sentiment, Shazam! now stands as only the second entry in the franchise to be Certified Fresh, following 2017’s Wonder Woman. Aquaman was briefly Certified Fresh, but later had that designation removed after more negative reviews came in, leading the seafaring superhero adventure to end up below the 75% threshold. Aquaman was never at any point above 90% on the Tomatometer though, so it seems highly unlikely that Shazam! will suffer the same de-certified fate. Unfortunately, Shazam!’s opening weekend box office grosses might not measure up to its critical approval.

Rotten Tomatoes may require stricter verification to fight trolls. The popular web-based review aggregator has grown into a mainstay of audience and critical feedback on films since its early quiet beginnings in 1998. With its monthly unique global visitor’s tally somewhere in the neighborhood of 26 million, the site has become the first stop for many both before and after a film’s release.

As the site has grown in popularity, it has obviously faced its fair share of supporters and detractors. In recent years, big name Hollywood filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese have come forth to take aim at the detrimental effects of the review site and its method of stripping down films to a mere good or bad status. Beyond this – or perhaps in addition to it – Rotten Tomatoes has found itself at the center of a debate regarding trolls who overwhelm the site in the days leading up to the release of a film they don’t like and negatively review it.

In fact, the Rotten Tomatoes trolls became so irritating in the lead up to the release of Captain Marvel that the site changed its policy, disallowing users to comment on a film prior to its release. Now, according to THR, a Rotten Tomatoes rep has said that tighter restrictions – including making users verify having seen a film before reviewing it – may need to be implemented.

The Captain Marvel incident, in which hordes of trolls lashed out due to the gender of its protagonist, was unfortunately not the first of its kind for Rotten Tomatoes, either. Past battles with those more interested in gender or skin color than cinema also occurred with the female-led reboot of Ghostbusters as well as films like Black Panther and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The frustration this has caused Rotten Tomatoes and film fans alike is apparent, though at present, Rotten Tomatoes has not given any indication what their new, troll-proof system would look like or how exactly it would function. That being said, Fandango, the parent company that owns Rotten Tomatoes, clearly understands the need to put an end to this problem and appears determined to find the right solution.

Whatever the prevailing opinion on Rotten Tomatoes and its aggregate method of film review may be, it is important that trolls be shut out from the issues that don’t concern them. As this is a debate about a film related website, it’s obvious that cinephiles and casual filmgoers should be able to access untainted reviews of whatever film they choose. Stripped to its essence, this is a case of those who enjoy cinema versus those who don’t. If film review sites such as Rotten Tomatoes must take stricter measures to ensure the reviews are there for those who actually care about the amazing medium of cinema, then so be it.

Glass: Rotten Tomatoes Reveals ‘Rotten’ Score Based On Early Reviews

After some brutal early reviews for the movie, Rotten Tomatoes has revealed a “rotten” 35% score for M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass. Shyamalan’s latest arrives two years after his last movie Split, starring James McAvoy as a man with multiple personalities who kidnaps a group of school girls, revived the director’s reputation while grossing $278 million at the global box office.

In addition to providing classic Shyamalan thrills, Split also contained one of the director’s signature twists, when Bruce Willis’ David Dunn character from Shyalaman’s Unbreakable showed up for a brief cameo. With the film’s box office tally rising, Shyamalan explained that Split was indeed intended as a sequel to Unbreakable, and revealed that his next movie Glass would wrap up the trilogy by bringing back McAvoy and Willis together with Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price. Glass soon became one of the most buzzed-about films of 2019, with fans anticipating a satisfying wrap-up to the story kicked off in Unbreakable and surprisingly continued in Split.

However, after early screenings of Glass, it appears those excited fans may be in for a disappointing experience. After the first round of early reviews largely panned Shyamalan’s newest effort, aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes has rendered an initial verdict and given Glass a score of 35%, putting it firmly in “rotten” territory. It remains to be seen if Glass will do better on the audience side of the Rotten Tomatoes ledger after it hits theaters in nationwide release.

Getting hit with a “rotten” rating by Rotten Tomatoes is of course nothing new for M. Night Shyamalan, who has seen several of his releases get panned by critics over the years. Unsurprisingly, Shyamalan’s worst-performing movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes is his 2010 debacle The Last Airbender, which currently sits at a dismal 5%. The director’s Will Smith-led 2012 sci-fi disaster After Earth also got crushed by critics, receiving a score of 11%, while his unintentionally (or maybe intentionally) hilarious 2008 disaster movie The Happening sits at 18%.

But Shyamalan hasn’t always been a target for so much critical wrath. His breakout feature The Sixth Sense was a smash hit when it came out in 1999, and carries an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Unbreakable itself stands at a solid 69%, just a little bit behind the director’s sci-fi classic Signs at 73%. In more recent years, Shyamalan has seen his quirky horror excursion The Visit score 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Split did even better with a score of 76%.

It’s no shock at all to see Shyamalan’s Rotten Tomato scores falling all over map, given the well-documented ups-and-downs of his long career. If Rotten Tomatoes’s 35% score for Glass is any indication, Shyamalan has indeed hit another one of those low points. But if the writer-director has proven anything over the years, it’s that he somehow always manages to bounce back. It appears however that, when Shyamalan does come back again, it won’t be with another sequel to Unbreakable/Split, as the trilogy most likely will not continue beyond Glass.
