Even though Trebek’s last day is yet to be announced the beloved TV host has already planned his touching sign-off. During an ABC special called What is Jeopardy? the TV host sat down with Michael Strahan (via Good Morning America) where he opened up a bit more about his health and having to come to terms with leaving the trivia show behind. The 79-year-old had been hosting the popular evening gameshow since 1984.

Back in March of 2019 Trebek revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and had begun chemotherapy treatment. During the interview, the host said that he learned a very important lesson – that no one knows when they will die. For him, the cancer diagnosis left the worldly question close-ended thanks to the horrible survival rates of his particular cancer. For most, the question of when someone will die is very much an open-ended question. Due to this, Trebek already decided how he will end his final Jeopardy show, with a “significant moment.” The cherished host said he has already rehearsed his goodbye by telling the director to leave him 30 seconds saying he will tell his viewers, “Don’t ask me who’s going to replace me because I have no say whatsoever.” He joked during the interview saying that he is sure that if the fans of Jeopardy give as much attention and respect as they gave him then the show would continue to be a success.

Trebek will then leave his fans with his final words which will consist of until we meet again and goodbye. Even though the host has no plans to leave the show just yet, he is still preparing for the day that may eventually come. Right now the host is looking forward to hosting a special called, Jeopardy: The Greatest of All Time where game show greats of the past will come together to battle it out one last time.

Alex Trebek Returns to Jeopardy! After Cancer Treatment

Good news for Jeopardy! fans: host Alex Trebek has returned to work following his cancer treatment. Trebek has been with the long-running quiz show since 1984, when it switched to a daily syndicated format. Since then, he’s become a household name, with fans who tune in frequently considering him a regular part of their day. For his work on the show, Trebek has won six Outstanding Game Show Host Emmys. He also holds the Guinness World Record for “most game show episodes hosted by the same presenter.” At 79, Trebek’s current contract has him hosting Jeopardy! through 2022.

The beloved host shocked fans earlier this year by announcing his stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis from the set of Jeopardy! In the video, he spoke frankly about his illness and his plans to beat it, stating, “Now normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working.” Soon after, reports surfaced that, in light of Trebek’s diagnosis, there were plans to search for a potential replacement host. However, in May, Trebek appeared on Good Morning America to reveal that his cancer was miraculously close to remission.

Trebek now has even more good news to share, revealing that he’s back working on Jeopardy!‘s upcoming season 36. In a video, he shares that, “I’m on the mend, and that’s all I can hope for right now.” The host goes on to say, “We’ve got some exciting things coming up, and I can’t wait to share them with all of you. Let me tell you, it’s going to be a good year.” Production on the new season began over a month ago. It’s set to premiere September 9.

Jeopardy! made news recently for a happier reason as well, when contestant James Holzhauer won an impressive 32 games in a row last season. He beat numerous records during his run, including money won in a single game, topping the previous record of $77,000 a total of 16 times. The new record established by Holzhauer is $131,127. Following his time on Jeopardy!, he made a donation to the Naperville Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk in Trebek’s name. The show also announced back in July that Holzhauer will return for this November’s Tournament of Champions.

Though Trebek won’t be around to host the show forever, fans should be relieved to hear that he’s back at work and on the mend. With so many decades on air, Trebek is synonymous with Jeopardy! It’s hard to imagine the show without him, which is why even people who watch occasionally consider Trebek to be a beloved pop culture figure. Jeopardy! will likely continue after his retirement, but he deserves a goodbye on his own terms after so long with the show. Here’s hoping that Trebek’s around not only until 2022 but continues to host Jeopardy! for years to come.

Alex Trebek, famed host of Jeopardy!, has released a video with an update after his cancer diagnosis. Taped on the final day of Jeopardy!‘s 35th season, the king of America’s favorite quiz show offered a message of hope.

Created by Merv Griffin, the trivia show has become a household staple and most recognized game show of all time. A majority of the show’s success can be attributed to Trebek. In a video on Jeopardy!’s YouTube channel, Trebek says that he’s “feeling good” and expresses deep gratitude for all the fans who have reached out. He also mentions continuation with his therapy and that “all kinds of good stuff” is in store. The video promises viewers that Jeopardy! will return in September for the show’s 36th season and Trebek plans on being a part of it.  See the full video below:

Despite Trebek’s recent update of continuing his role in season 36, Jeopardy! is reportedly searching for his replacement. Before the cancer announcement, the host’s contract was only cemented for the next three years. However, the network is wary about keeping him much longer. Supposedly, Jeopardy! has been dabbling with the idea of bringing a female host of color on board. Trebek has suggested attorney Laura Coates or Los Angeles King announcer Alex Faust be his successor. As for Jeopardy!, the show remains in top ratings and currently has a contestant keeping the game intense with his recent 10th consecutive win.

Trebek’s dignified, pointed and kind-hearted appearance is why so many have welcomed him into their homes. While it is difficult to picture someone other than Alex Trebek behind Jeopardy!’s podium, change is inevitable. Trebek’s newest message is inspiring for anyone facing difficulty and is a reminder that his legacy and Jeopardy! have a reserved place in television history.
