The Simpsons has been on the air for 30 years, and its Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials have been running almost as long as the series itself. Each year for the spooky season the series delivers a set of gory tales told campfire style.
Every character has made at least one appearance throughout the Halloween specials over the years. Long-time fans of the show look forward to the Treehouse special every year, as they know they are always in for morbid laughs. No pop culture figure is safe during these episodes. Mr. Burns hires the Simpsons family to watch his country estate for the winter and Homer goes insane. In his madness, he tries to fix a toaster and accidentally opens a portal for time travel. Meanwhile, Bart and Lisa turn cannibal against their fellow students at the school.

The episode that started it all features Homer falling into an Edgar Allen Poe retelling. Lisa’s story has the family moving into a cursed mansion while Bart’s shows aliens abducting and eating them.

Bart obtains magical powers that allow him to turn anyone who annoys him into something mischievous, like Homer into a Jack-in-the-Box. The family also receives a monkey’s paw from a market that grants five wishes.

When Springfield is destroyed by a neutron bomb, Homer is left fighting mutants to survive. Another tale shows Marge as a witch in colonial times. Bart’s tale shows what happens when his DNA is mixed with a fly’s.

One story features Maggie as an alien while another shows Bart and Lisa trapped in an Itchy and Scratchy cartoon. Homer’s tale of horror shows him dealing with a hair transplant gone wrong.

The Simpsons family tries to get rid of the evidence of killing their neighbor Ned Flanders, but it turns out it triggered a werewolf transformation and he comes back for revenge. Another tale shows how Homer starts the Y2K apocalypse.

Once more The Simpsons saw into the future and showed the troubles with smart houses as the family’s new AI home tries to kill Homer. In another tale, Bart and Lisa fall into a Harry Potter world and attend wizarding school.

The 25th annual Treehouse of Horror featured a visit from The Simpsons’ other-selves as created by Tracy Ullman. After Bart reads a mysterious message under his desk in Aramaic he and Lisa are transported to another dimension.
15 Treehouse of Horror XV (2004) – 7.4/10
This Halloween special includes Maggie eaten by Mr. Burns as her family tries to get her back and Bart and Lisa solving a mystery involving a murderer with a taste for mutton chops. Another tale shows Ned developing the power to predict deaths with a single touch.
14 Treehouse of Horror XX (2009) – 7.3/10
The Simpsons mirror classic Hitchcock films with a black and white feature of its own where Lisa seeks vengeance against Miss Hoover.
Homer searches for vengeance when Moe uses his blood to flavor the beer for sales after he is impaled on the bartender’s microbrewery. The tales are rounded out with a zombie story that mocks the movie 28 Days Later.
13 Treehouse of Horror XVI (2005) – 7.3/10
When Bart falls into a coma after a reckless stunt, the Simpsons get a robot son to replace him. Another Treehouse tale shows Mr. Burns as a hunter of the greatest game of all: man.
12 Treehouse of Horror XXIII (2012) – 7.2/10
The 12th annual Treehouse takes on a Back to the Future parody where Bart tries to stop Marge from marrying Homer. It also takes on the Paranormal Activity franchise with Homer conducting his own paranormal investigation.
11 Treehouse of Horror XXVIII (2017) – 7.1/10
Homer turns into the ultimate cannibal as he discovers he likes the taste of his own flesh. Lisa enters a world of button-eyed people in the style of Coraline and Maggie gets possessed by a demon named Pazuzu.
10 Treehouse of Horror XIX (2008) – 7.0/10
This Halloween tale depicts Springfield’s cars turning into battling robots that wage war on each other. When Homer accidentally kills Krusty an ad agency approaches him to off other celebrities to avoid paying royalties for product sponsors. In the final tale, Millhouse summons the Great Pumpkin that turns out to be a cannibal.
9 Treehouse of Horror XXI (2010) – 7.0/10
The Simpsons pokes fun at the Twilight saga in this Halloween special and feature Bart and Millhouse in a Jumanji style tale. The final Halloween story shows Homer and Marge on a second honeymoon that gets disrupted by a castaway.
8 Treehouse of Horror XXX (2019) – 7.0/10
The 30th annual Halloween special takes on Stranger Things and sees Selma find love with an alien. Homer also dies and his spirit drifts between bodies.
7 Treehouse of Horror XVII (2006) – 6.9/10
Bart conjures a Golem, a creature from Jewish folklore, and Homer gets turned into a blob monster from a meteor’s radiation. Kang and Kodos land in the 1930s for an alien invasion.
6 Treehouse of Horror XVIII (2007) – 6.9/10
The Simpson kids and their friends pull pranks on Springfield and are sent to Ned Flanders’ Heck House. Marge and Homer turn into expert assassins like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The final tale parodies E.T. with Bart befriending Kodos the alien.
5 Treehouse of Horror XXIV (2013) – 6.9/10
Bart is beheaded and they sew his head onto Lisa’s body to help him survive. A Dr. Seuss type rhyming creature visits the children when they’re sick and slaughters others like it in Springfield. Homer sets out to kill Moe, the freak-show king in a circus tale of horror.
4 Treehouse of Horror XXVII (2016) – 6.9/10
This Halloween special parodies The Hunger Games franchise and has the Springfield kids fight each other to the death. Lisa’s tale tells the story of an imaginary friend who kills real-life friends and Bart’s tale shows him joining Moe’s secret bartender agents.
3 Treehouse of Horror XXVI (2015) – 6.6/10
Sideshow Bob finally fulfills his desire to kill Bart but then doesn’t know what to do once his mission is complete. Radiation exposure leaves Bart, Lisa and Millhouse with strange powers. Homer wakes up one day to find he has short-term memory loss.
2 Treehouse of Horror XXII (2011) – 6.4/10
Flanders turns into a vigilante by night in one tale while Bart and Millhouse take on an off-planet quest in another. The last tale features Homer gaining mysterious powers after getting bitten by a spider.
1 Treehouse of Horror XXIX (2018) – 5.9/10
Mr. Burns opens a retirement home in the style of Jurrasic Park while Homer challenges the mythical Cthulu to an oyster-eating contest and wins.
