WWE Extreme Rules: Brock Lesnar Cashes In, Wins Universal Championship

Brock Lesnar cashes in his Money in the Bank contract on Seth Rollins to win the Universal Championship after the main event of WWE Extreme Rules. While Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman had teased that the former UFC fighter would indeed cash in on either Rollins or WWE Champion Kofi Kingston during Extreme Rules, most figured it was just another fake out. Even when Heyman reiterated the declaration earlier tonight, many fans thought it was just more mind games from the devious ECW founder.

Obviously, that turned out to not be the case, and Heyman had in fact delivered a spoiler earlier on. After Rollins and Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch emerged victorious over opponents Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans in the main event of Extreme Rules, it looked like the celebration would be on, but things quickly went south for Rollins.  Lesnar arrived fast, wasting no time in cashing in his contract on a weakened Rollins after hitting a few high impact German suplexes.

Related: WWE Extreme Rules: AJ Styles Beats Ricochet for U.S. Championship

Lesnar finished Rollins off with an F-5 after the bell officially rang, continuing the usual pattern of Money in the Bank winners successfully cashing in to a win a championship, although a handful of wrestlers have failed. In doing so, Lesnar effectively avenged the WrestleMania XXXV match in which he lost the same title to Rollins in April. The era of The Beast looks to be resuming right where it left off, whether the WWE fans like it or not.

Lesnar now embarks on his seventh world title reign in WWE, and his third with the Universal Championship in particular. While Lesnar will presumably defend the title at SummerSlam in August, him recapturing Raw’s top belt opens the door for The Beast to resume the pattern so many WWE fans have grown sick of since his return to WWE as a part-time performer. Lesnar only wrestles on pay-per-view, and only a handful of them per year, due to his specialized, big money contract.

This has led to Lesnar being a Universal Champion that rarely defends his title, leaving many pay-per-views without a world championship main event. That finally seemed to be over, as a lot of Rollins and Lesnar’s story leading into WrestleMania centered on the idea that the fans were tired of a part-time champion. Yet, that’s now what they have to live with again after Extreme Rules. In a time when WWE recently took the step of hiring Heyman and Eric Bischoff to oversee Raw and SmackDown creatively, due to falling ratings, it’s baffling why they would immediately run back to Lesnar’s stale act as Universal Champion.

Hulu Now Co-Owned By Disney & Universal After AT&T Buyout

Hulu is now co-owned by Disney and Universal after buying out AT&T’s stake in the service. With just over ten years of experience in the rapidly growing subscription based streaming market, Hulu was one of the few original names that attempted to compete with Netflix, back when Netflix was first beginning to flex its streaming capabilities.

Today, Hulu’s service, while successful in its own right, has numerous characteristics that prevent it from branching out and reaching a wider range of subscribers. The fact that the service isn’t available outside of the United States (with the sole exception of Japan), has arguably stifled Hulu’s growth at a time when every subscription based streaming platform around seems to be doing all they can to reel in subscribers and create interest. And as the streaming landscape continues to shift, adapt and grow, Hulu still seems to some as though it continues to struggle with some basic concepts that customers expect from a streaming service in 2019.

Related: Can Netflix Stay On Top as Streaming Competition Grows?

Now, however, it appears that Hulu is undergoing another substantial change in its ownership. According to Deadline, Hulu – which was once jointly owned by Disney, 21st Century Fox, NBC Universal and AT&T WarnerMedia – is now owned solely by Disney and Universal, after AT&T sold its stake in the venture back to the other two shareholders. AT&T’s 9.5% stake in the joint venture will now be divided between Disney and Universal, with the sale netting AT&T $1.43 billion.

What this now means for Disney is that given its recent acquisition of Fox, the Mouse House is Hulu’s majority stakeholder, claiming 60% of Hulu, with the additional 9.5% previously owned by AT&T WarnerMedia to be divided up among Disney and NBC Universal. Still dealing with last summer’s $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner, AT&T will use its profits from this most recent sale to lessen its debt. As things currently stand, the idea that Disney could eventually own all of Hulu is a very real one, with Disney already making moves to promote the service as a key feature in its rapidly growing entertainment empire. And with Disney only months away from launching its own highly anticipated streaming service, Disney+, the streaming market looks as though it’s set to undergo yet another big change.

Though Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has previously stated that he’s not concerned about competition in the coming years, the steady growth of Disney in such a short amount of time is absolutely worth paying attention to. That being said, however, Netflix has been spending their time wisely, and working hard to develop their own, often highly successful original programming. Disney may be setting themselves up for a greater stake in the streaming market, but while they put in the work to get things up and running, Netflix continues to move forward on their own empire, having already dealt with many of the growing pains that Disney is still likely to face.

A Secret Life Of Pets Ride Is Coming to Universal Studios Hollywood

A new The Secret Life Of Pets ride is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood. Based on the wildly successful Illumination animated franchise, the ride will join other popular attractions of the park, including Transformers: The Ride 3D, Jurassic Park: The Ride, The Simpsons Ride, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The Secret Life Of Pets ride’s conception coincides perfectly with the release of the film’s sequel coming in June.

Released in 2016, The Secret Life of Pets was a huge success, pulling in $875 million at the box office. Packed with adorable furry creatures and voices of Hollywood A-listers, The Secret Life of Pets follows a Jack Russell Terrier named Max (Louis C.K.). While his owner is at work, Max associates with other pets of the building, including Snowball (Kevin Hart), Gidget (Jenny Slate), Chloe (Lake Bell) and Buddy (Hannibal Buress). Max’s spoiled life comes to a halt when his owner adopts a stray named Duke (Eric Stonestreet). The Secret Life of Pets 2 will have changes in the cast including Patton Oswalt taking over the voice of Max and Harrison Ford playing Rooster  – in Ford’s first ever voice role. After the film’s promotion by Universal at last week’s CinemaCon, the announcement of the ride furthers excitement for fans.

According to Deadline, the main notion of the ride is pet adoption.  Called “The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash!”, the ride will blend live, dimensional, and animated characters as guests zip along a track aboard ride vehicles. Theme park guests will take on the role of stray puppies as they journey through the streets of New York City, encountering mayhem and fellow animals along the way. The ride concludes at the arrival of a pet adoption center. Karen Irwin, President of Universal Studios Hollywood, expressed excitement for the ride in a statement:

We are thrilled to be able to bring another exciting Illumination movie-based ride to our guests. ‘The Secret Life Of Pets: Off the Leash!’ will capture the essence of the popular film and invite guests to live vicariously through some of their favorite characters as they embark on a one-of-a-kind experience only available at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The ride continues Universal Studio Hollywood’s consistent pattern of adding new attractions since 2012. “The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash!” will take over the Globe Theatre and stand adjacent to the “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” and “Super Silly Fun Land” attractions. As fans await the opening of The Secret Life of Pets ride, slated for 2020, park attendees can enjoy the opening of a new Jurassic World ride coming this summer.

The Secret Life of Pets franchise has found a delightful way to answer any pet owner’s most burning question: “What do they do when I’m not at home?” Along with being a fun addition to the Universal Studio Hollywood theme park, perhaps the ride will also stimulate conversation on the benefits of pet adoption. After all, it’s important to take good care of a pet, but a pet can also take very good care of its owner.

WrestleMania: Seth Rollins Defeats Brock Lesnar for Universal Championship

Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal championship to kick off WrestleMania XXXV. Lesnar had held the title since Crown Jewel last year after Roman Reigns had to relinquish it due to illness last October. Rollins earned the opportunity to challenge “The Beast” earlier this year at the Royal Rumble event, where he won the titular match. Rollins’ victory over Lesnar makes him the sixth person to hold the championship since its inception in 2016.

The history between Rollins and Lesnar dates back to WrestleMania XXXI where Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase during Lesnar’s bout. More recently, Rollins had been feuding with Lesnar and his advocate Paul Heyman for the past several months on his quest to “slay the beast.” Rollins, who calls himself “The Beast Slayer,” felt that Lesnar wasn’t qualified to hold the title since he is never around to defend it. Since returning to WWE in 2012, Lesnar has been on a limited schedule and only appears at major WWE events. Feeling as though fans deserved a fighting champion, Rollins set out to dethrone “The Beast.” While this is Rollins first reign with the Universal championship, many fans will recall that he was a participant in the first match to crown a Universal champion. While Rollins didn’t capture the title that night, he made up for it tonight at WrestleMania.

In an unexpected turn of events, Rollins defeated Lesnar for the championship in the opening match at Wrestlemania XXXV. Prior to the match, Heyman marched his way down to the squared circle in order to proclaim that he and Lesnar didn’t want to wait all night, so he proceeded to introduce his client. However, Lesnar assaulted Rollins before the match could get underway. After brutalizing Rollins outside the ring, the match finally got started and Rollins made quick work of Lesnar. After delivering three curb stomps to Lesnar, Rollins picked up the victory to claim his first Universal title.

Rollins will look to have a lengthy reign with the championship, and he will more than likely look to give Reigns a shot at the title, since he never lost it. The two are known for their tenure as members of the dominant trio, The Shield. And, with WWE removing rematch clauses for former champions, Lesnar will have to earn his rematch against Rollins. Since Lesnar doesn’t show up very often, chances are Rollins’ first challenger will be his former tag partner, Reigns.

Rollins’ quick victory over Lesnar is shocking, but many fans will be excited to know that the championship will be back on weekly television. With Rollins being a more consistent member of the roster, fans will finally have a fighting champion on Monday Night Raw. The Universal title hasn’t felt important since its inception, but with Rollins now holding it, WWE can finally highlight the title appropriately.

Universal Studios’ Jurassic World: The Ride Details Revealed

Universal Studios’ Jurassic World: The Ride details have been revealed. The Jurassic Park franchise has grown and evolved over the years, reimagined as Jurassic World with the release of 2015’s mega-blockbuster of the same name. The new series is intended as a trilogy, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom having been released in 2018 and a third film due for release in June of 2021.

From the moment Jurassic Park was released in 1993, the film’s excitement and groundbreaking CG effects blew audiences away. Universal had a bona fide blockbuster on its hands, though there was no way of knowing at the time just how big the series would become. Three years after the film made its mark, however, Jurassic Park: The Ride was opened at Universal Studios Hollywood. Construction began on the ride during the film’s production and by 1996, Jurassic Park was well entrenched in the cinematic zeitgeist, allowing Universal to open similar variations of the popular attraction at its theme parks in Japan, Singapore, and Florida.

With the birth of a new Jurassic Park series in 2015, Universal realized that their theme park ride was also in need of being re-imagined. The end result is Jurassic World: The Ride, which is set to open at Universal Studios Hollywood this summer. According to a Universal press release, the new attraction is being overseen by a host of key players, including the award-winning crews at Universal Creative and Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), as well as Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World series producer Frank Marshall, and director Colin Trevorrow.

The new and improved ride boasts new jungle environments, as well as some new animatronic dinosaurs that fans will remember from the Jurassic World films. Describing the aesthetics of the revamped attraction as “dramatically enhanced,” Universal has updated the entry to the ride, redesigning the park’s stone pillars – complete with billowing flames – and adding a large Jurassic World logo. Plenty of video information on the dinosaurs in the park will be broadcast to guests lining up, and the ride itself features redesigned rafts that will transport guests through the park’s lush environments. As the journey progresses, various dinosaur inhabitants turn menacing, before an angry T-Rex and one of Jurassic World’s new dinosaurs begin to do battle with one another. At this point, guests’ rafts will plummet down an 84-foot waterfall in order to escape. The park also contains a “Raptor Encounter” area and an interactive “Dino Play” educational area for children of all ages.

From the sound of things, this new take on Universal’s dino-centric ride will continue to delight fans and adventure seekers. If there is an issue to be raised with the updated attraction, it’s that it perhaps hasn’t changed enough. The original Jurassic Park ride also culminated with an 84-foot drop and offered numerous animatronic dinosaurs from the first film. Some might feel slightly let down by the fact that the ride wasn’t given a complete concept overhaul to match the expectations of a new generation of fans and dinosaur lovers. Still, the new animatronic dinosaurs and environments could feel far more immersive and real than those of its predecessor, so for that reason alone, Jurassic World: The Ride might end up offering some highly unique and fascinating thrills.

Hobbs & Shaw Photo: Idris Elba’s Fast & Furious Villain Revealed

Dwayne Johnson has posted the first photo of Idris Elba as the villainous Brixton in the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. The Rock has arguably become as central to the illegal street racing series-turned international juggernaut that is Fast & Furious as Vin Diesel, following his debut as Luke Hobbs from 2011’s Fast Five… and he has the box office receipts to prove it. Hence, it’s not surprising that Universal has decided to prioritize a spinoff movie that centers around Johnson’s character and pairs him opposite Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, especially after the two actors discovered they have crackling onscreen chemistry while filming last year’s Fate of the Furious.

Hobbs and Shaw officially began shooting last month, with David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2) calling the shots from a script by Fast & Furious franchise writer/producer Chris Morgan. Not much is known about the film’s actual narrative, admittedly, but it’s probably fair to assume that Elba’s character is a suave British mercenary of sorts (Is there any other kind of British mercenary in the movies?) who’s out to profit from his terrorist ways. And of course, the only ones who stand in his way are Hobbs, Shaw, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout‘s Vanessa Kirby as (reportedly) Shaw’s sister, an MI-5 agent.

Related: Vanessa Kirby’s Hobbs & Shaw Character is ‘Absolutely the Boss’

Johnson published the first photo of Elba in character for Hobbs and Shaw on his Instagram account and, in doing so, confirmed the mysterious baddie’s name. Take a look in the space below:

Hobbs and Shaw‘s Brixton will be but the latest villain role in a major franchise movie that Elba adds to his belt, to go along with his voice work as the tiger Shere Khan in Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book remake and his performance as the antagonist Krall in Star Trek Beyond. As compelling as the actor can be when he’s playing the nobler type onscreen (even an extremely flawed hero like the DCI John Luther on the TV series Luther), he generally makes for an equally charismatic and engaging threat to the good guys in his big screen appearances.

The Fast & Furious movies have stepped up their own villain game over the past five years by bringing in top-tier talent like Luke Evans, Charlize Theron and – once upon a time – even Statham to take on the franchise’s heroes. However, with Elba stepping into Brixton’s (fancy) shoes, there’s a pretty good chance that Hobbs and Shaw will end up delivering the most memorable bad guy that the series has seen to date.

Conor McGregor After UFC Loss Says “I’ll Be Back”

Conor McGregor confirms he’ll return to the world of the UFC. After a five year career of MMA fighting, with an 11-2 record, McGregor made the transition to the UFC. He was victorious in his first fight, which put him on a pursuit for title shots. He won his first seven UFC matches overall, earning the nickname “The Notorious” during this stretch. He won the UFC Interim Featherweight Championship in 2015 by defeating Chad Mendes, and then defended the belt by defeating Jose Aldo. It wasn’t until 2016 where he was handed his first UFC loss by Nate Diaz, but he quickly rebounded to defeat him in a rematch, and then beat Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC Lightweight Championship – making him the first fighter to simultaneously hold two different UFC belts.

McGregor went on a hiatus after this feat to prepare for the birth of his child, and also challenge Floyd “Money” Mayweather to a boxing match. He was stripped of both belts as a result of inactivity, but immediately had the shot to win the Lightweight belt back in his return fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov. The match didn’t go his way, nor did the insane post-fight antics by Khabib and his team, but McGregor isn’t backing down.

Related: What Exactly Happened at the End of the McGregor-Khabib Fight?

McGregor took to Instagram shortly after the fight concluded, revealing that his status with the UFC has not changed. He assured his fans that he’ll return to the octagon, it’s just when that remains to be seen. To make the announcement, he channeled his inner Arnold Schwarzenegger by saying, “I’ll be back.”

McGregor’s return should’ve been expected, as he could very well get another title shot through a rematch in the near future. The investigations surrounding Khabib and his team could ultimately strip him of his Lightweight belt, so even if McGregor gets a chance to win that belt back, there’s no guarantee that it would be a straight up rematch, as it could end up being against a different challenger.

McGregor is known to let his brash personality get the best of him, but he was largely restrained during all the commotion post-fight. McGregor handled the loss in a professional manner, which is why the UFC isn’t investigating his involvement in these events any further. He may have been responsible for some pre-fight mayhem that could’ve cost him his UFC career, but he appears to possibly have learned from it and handled himself much better here. Considering how he’s responded to the outcome and chaos that ensued after, the UFC may look to get the star back in the octagon for another fight sooner rather than later. McGregor is clearly ready to return, now its just up to the UFC to figure out how and when.

Barbie Movie Now Starring Margot Robbie, Eyes Wonder Woman Director

Warner Bros. is taking control of the long-delayed Barbie live-action movie and Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie is in talks to produce and star in it. If a deal is reached, the movie will be handled through Robbie’s banner Luckychap Entertainment – the same group producing the upcoming Birds of Prey movie for DC Films.

First announced in 2009, the Barbie movie has spent the better part of a decade being tossed around Hollywood like a hot potato. The project started at Universal, before moving to Sony, where Diablo Cody was hired to work on a script. Amy Schumer was cast to star in the film in 2016 before dropping out due to other commitments, at which point Anne Hathaway was cast as Barbie. Plans were made for the film to begin shooting this year in anticipation of a 2020 release, before the rights revered back to Mattel, who sold the film rights to Warner Bros.

Related: Birds of Prey Movie: Margot Robbie Pushing to Hire Diverse Co-Stars

THR reports that Robbie is in talks to play the title role in the movie, with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins reportedly being eyed to direct, but negotiations haven’t started on that front yet.

It’s unknown at this point just what sort of film Warner Bros. intends to make using the Barbie license. Previous scripts for Sony were reportedly based around the idea of putting a spin on the classic Barbie mythology, exploring the issues of feminism and identity in a modern world through the eyes of a character who has not always exemplified the ideals of feminine empowerment. It’s also unknown if Mattel took ownership of these Barbie scripts of if they remained the property of Sony. This would be the standard practice, but Mattel could still move forward with the idea of a more proactive Barbie with interests beyond fashion and boys at Warner Bros.

It seems likely that concept of such a Barbie movie would appeal to Robbie, whose most recent works have been centered around the portrayal of strong women. In addition to her work producing the Birds of Prey movie (in which she will reprise her role as the anti-hero Harley Quinn), Robbie will soon be appearing in Josie Rourke’s Mary, Queen of Scots as Queen Elizabeth I of England. She is also signed to star in Marian, a film based around the idea of Maid Marian having to lead a new rebellion against the newly crowned King John in the wake of the death of her husband, Robin Hood.
