Little Mermaid Rumor: Lady Gaga Possibly Up for Ursula Role

Disney is rumored to want Lady Gaga as part of their live-action The Little Mermaid movie cast. The Mouse House has found great success remaking films from their animated library in a new way. These big budget live-action takes on the stories have made the studio billions, and that’s only the beginning, with properties like The Lion KingAladdin, and Mulan on their way in the next two years. One of the other IPs they’re looking to bring to the big screen in this new light is beloved film The Little Mermaid.

The studio has been mulling a live-action Little Mermaid for the past two years, and some progress has been made. Even before the buzz for Mary Poppins Returns truly begins, Disney reportedly already courted its director Rob Marshall to tackle this next. There’s still no indication when the movie will be made, but the latest rumor shares which rising star Disney is reportedly eyeing.

The Disinsider shared a rumor regarding a name they’ve heard is high up on Disney’s wish list for a role in Little Mermaid: Lady Gaga. The outlet notes that this is an unconfirmed report they are hearing, and one that Disney representatives declined to comment on, so this rumor should be treated as such and taken with a grain of salt for now. However, if this is true, it’s believed that Gaga is being considered for the villain role in the movie as Ursula.

Gaga is currently enjoying overwhelming praise for her performance in Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born. Her efforts both as an actress and as a singer in the movie have blown away critics and general moviegoers alike. This buzz also reportedly had her in consideration for a role in Birds of Prey. That didn’t pan out, and now it could be Disney’s live-action department that adds her. It would be a huge coup for the project, and give them someone with legitimate talent as a singer to bring the sea witch to life.

The prospect of Gaga joining Little Mermaid comes on the heels of Zendaya previously being rumored to have an offer on the table to play Ariel. That has yet to be confirmed too, but the rising actress is open to taking on the role. A potential Little Mermaid live-action movie led by Zendaya and Lady Gaga would be quite the impressive start to the cast. If either or both do join the movie, expect Disney to go after similarly big names for the roles of Eric, King Triton, and the voices of Flounder and Sebastian. Hopefully these castings do pan out, and some official updates on The Little Mermaid aren’t too far away.

Little Mermaid: Zendaya is Open to Playing Disney’s Live-Action Ariel

Zendaya is interested in playing Ariel in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. Disney may already have the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars breaking box office records, but their recent run of live-action remakes has also played a part in their incredible success. Alice in Wonderland started this phenomenon by earning over $1 billion worldwide, and kicked off a progression that has since included live-action re-imaginings of Maleficent, CinderellaThe Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and Christopher Robin. Disney has shown no signs of slowing down either, with over a dozen such projects in the works.

One of the remakes they’re developing is an updated take on Little Mermaid. They’ve reportedly courted Rob Marshall to direct the project, after his work on Mary Poppins Returns. Disney’s yet to confirm their specific plans for the movie, but a recent rumor claimed Spider-Man: Homecoming star Zendaya had been offered the lead role.

Speaking to Variety, Zendaya confirmed that the previous rumor was just that, a rumor. Even though no official talks have happened between her and Disney, she did say that she’s interested in the part. She revealed why the role of Ariel and starring in Little Mermaid is appealing to her, and it’s because of the themes:

Speaking your truth, following your heart…There’s a million. And that’s the idea, we all just want at least one young person to just leave and feel inspired and want to know a little about something else or someone else and just bridge those gaps.

Zendaya is no stranger to working with the House of Mouse, being one of the more recent Disney Channel stars to find success beyond that realm. She starred in two different Disney shows, Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover, so the company is clearly a fan of her work. Marvel Studios even brought her into the MCU in a pivotal part, as she’s essentially their equivalent of Mary Jane. Outside of Disney, she also starred in Fox’s crowd-pleasing musical The Greatest Showman last year. Zendaya can also both sing and act, making her a great choice for Ariel. Now that her interest is noted, maybe Disney will actually make a move to get her involved.

The casting of Zendaya as Ariel would be the latest example of studios updating previous iterations of stories – and their source material – to diversify the characters. Zendaya has already done this with Marvel and handled any backlash like a pro, so there’s no doubt she could do the same with Little Mermaid. This is just Zendaya expressing interest in the part though, so it’ll be up to Disney to decide whether or not to seriously consider her. If they do, there’s reason to believe Zendaya would be an excellent Ariel, especially given her passion for what she stands for and what the story represents. So if Disney really is looking to update The Little Mermaid, Zendaya is interested.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Set Photos Reunite Tom Holland & Zendaya

Tom Holland and Zendaya star in the latest batch of Spider-Man: Far From Home set photos. When Marvel Studios and Sony decided to reboot Spider-Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they did so by making some changes. First, they casted an age appropriate actor to play a teenage Peter Parker, which got Holland his superhero role. Secondly, they wanted to update the portrayals of several characters to better reflect the current look of Queens. Their other point of emphasis was using characters that hadn’t been done before, such as Vulture, Shocker, Tinkerer, Ned Leeds, and so on. But, they also surprised by including a Mary Jane twist.

The end of Spider-Man: Homecoming had Zendaya’s character Michelle say, “My friends call me MJ,” establishing her as Peter’s major love-interest moving forward as a nod to Mary Jane Watson from the comics. A romance between the two characters has barely been set up, as Zendaya didn’t have too large of a role in Homecoming. She’s back for Far From Home and new set photos show her and Holland sharing some scenes.

Daily Mail shared the latest set photos from Spider-Man: Far From Home that feature just Tom Holland and Zendaya. The two were spotted in Prague filming late night scenes together. The scene appears to be low-stakes and just a conversation between Peter and MJ. One photo does show both actors signaling peace signs up into the sky with a bright light shining on them. There was also a scene being shot of an explosion on the nearby river.

Zendaya has long been confirmed to be part of the cast of Far From Home but this is the best look at her on the set. These photos also are the first sign of Peter and MJ getting to spend some quality time alone, so this could be one of the scenes that sets up a romantic relationship between the two. Since the film is going all across Europe, Far From Home could be a global adventure where Peter and MJ really get to know each other.

As for the rest of the images, it is difficult to say what is going on. The peace signs image is odd because it isn’t directed towards the paparazzi and rather appears to be part of the scene. Is this just Peter and MJ giving a sign to their friends who are up in a building that they’ll be in soon or a signal to someone for saving them? Unless Peter tells MJ that he’s Spider-Man during Far From Home, she wouldn’t be around for any encounters with Fury or other MCU characters. Some action is happening close by with the explosion scene, so maybe someone else actually saves the youngsters in a time of need that allows Peter to keep his secret identity. Unless more photos or videos come, the uncertainty that comes with these images likely won’t clear up. But, since Spider-Man: Far From Home still has weeks of filming left, this may not be the last chance fans have to see what is going on.

Disney’s Live-Action Little Mermaid Rumor: Zendaya Offered Lead Role

Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid movie is rumored to have offered the lead role of Ariel to Disney Channel actress and singer Zendaya. Over the last decade, Walt Disney Studios has had great success in adapting their animated classics to live-action movies. Whether the live-action films put a new spin on the material – like Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland – or were nearly straight adaptations of the animated movies, such as Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, Disney has found a way to tap into the nostalgia of its longtime fans while telling these stories anew for younger generations.

Keeping these types of films going, Disney has a number of live-action adaptations in the works. Early next year, Tim Burton’s Dumbo will hit theaters, then Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin later in the spring. After the success of Jon Favreau’s live-action/CGI The Jungle Book, the director is now working on a new version of The Lion King. Currently both Mulan and Maleficent II are officially filming. Another live-action Disney movie in the early stages of development is The Little Mermaid. However, a new rumor indicates the Mouse House already has a star in mind for the titular role.

That Hashtag Show reports that someone close to Disney said Zendaya has been offered the role of Ariel in the studio’s live-action Little Mermaid movie. When asked by THS for comment, Disney and Zendaya’s reps declined. THS further speculated that if the role of Ariel is given to Zendaya or another actress of color, then the character’s father King Triton would be portrayed by a man of color. The Little Mermaid doesn’t yet have a confirmed director, though Rob Marshall is the reported top choice. However, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is on board to co-write the music with legendary composer Alan Menken.

Zendaya undoubtedly has the chops and experience to portray Ariel, having co-starred in 20th Century Fox’s P.T. Barnum musical The Greatest Showman and being a successful pop singer in her own right. The actress also has a history with Disney, having starred in two Disney Channel television series, Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover. Zendaya has taken on more big screen roles in recent years, joining Sony’s Spider-Man series that’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She debuted as Michelle in Spider-Man: Homecoming and is expected to return to the role for the sequel, 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Given all her experience and talent, Zendaya would be a fantastic choice for a modern take on Disney’s Little Mermaid.

Of course, casting a black actress like Zendaya in the role of Ariel would likely result in backlash against Disney’s production. Similarly, there was backlash when rumors surfaced she’d be playing Sony’s take on Mary Jane Watson in its Spider-Man series, with some comic fans crying for a “comics accurate” portrayal of MJ, who’s typically a white, redheaded woman (despite the fact that black people can have red hair). If Disney confirms the casting of Zendaya as Ariel, it’s likely there will be some resistance among certain fans of the Mouse House, but the actress also has a number of fans who would no doubt be excited to see her take on the role.

All that said, this is still a rumor for now, and shouldn’t be taken as fact. Though Disney may have offered the role to Zendaya, there’s no guarantee the actress will accept the offer or join the production. Still, if rumors of The Little Mermaid casting are going around, that may indicate Disney is ready to move forward with their latest live-action adaptation. As such, more should be learned about The Little Mermaid in the coming months.
