The Mandalorian is Getting a Panel at D23 2019 | ScreenRant

The Mandalorian is officially getting a panel at the D23 2019 expo in Anaheim next month. Disney and Lucasfilm’s upcoming show is both the first live-action Star Wars series and one of the Originals set to premiere when the Disney+ streaming service launches in November, so there’s understandably a lot of interest surrounding the project right now.

Created by actor-filmmaker Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Jungle Book), The Mandalorian picks up a few years after the events of Return of the Jedi, but takes place far away from the reaches of the New Republic and follows the adventures of a lone Mandalorian gunslinger (who’s played by Pedro Pascal). Lucasfilm debuted the first Mandalorian footage at Star Wars Celebration in April and has unveiled some high-res photos, but has yet to release a trailer online and is otherwise keeping the show’s details close to the chest for the time being. However, the studio will pull back the curtain a little further when this year’s D23 gets underway on Friday, August 23.

StarWars.com has now announced that The Mandalorian‘s D23 2019 panel will take place on August 23 at 3:30 p.m. in Hall D23. Favreau will be attending the presentation with Dave Filoni – who’s both the head of Lucasfilm Animation and director of The Mandalorian‘s premiere episode – as well as some “special guests” that could include cast members like Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, and/or Giancarlo Esposito, among others.

This December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is expected to receive a D23 panel a day after The Mandalorian on Saturday, August 24 (which is when Disney plans to spotlight their upcoming films in general). And as anticipated as J.J. Abrams’ conclusion to the Skywalker Saga is, in some ways there’s just as much – and maybe even more – excitement around The Mandalorian right now. After all, in addition to being the first live-action Star Wars series ever, it will be the first live-action Star Wars project that explores life in a galaxy far, far away after the fall of the Galactic Empire, but well before the subsequent rise of the First Order. It further promises to examine the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars universe in greater depth than last year’s spinoff movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, managed to do.

While The Mandalorian‘s D23 panel will surely include footage (either the Celebration clips and/or brand-new material), it will be interesting to see if it’s released online shortly after. After all, D23 footage is traditionally exclusively shown to those in attendance and isn’t made available to the public until much later. Then again, Disney + is set to launch less than three months after D23, so the expo might be the perfect time to get the ball rolling on the next phase of The Mandalorian‘s marketing.
