Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is front and center as Mighty Thor in a new fan-made poster for Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel Studios recently confirmed their plans for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at their Hall H panel during San Diego Comic-Con, and the continuation of the Thor franchise was announced as the final film in the two-year stretch. It was also announced that Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi would return to write and direct the film as well.
The return of Waititi was expected following the success of Thor: Ragnarok and the director’s innate ability to breathe new, and incredibly comedic, life into the franchise. Thor: Love and Thunder will also see Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson return as Thor Odinson and Valkyrie, respectively. Their appearances were very likely too, but the official cast announcement at SDCC did include the surprise return of Portman as Thor’s former love interest, who was bestowed with his mighty hammer Mjolnir after crossing the stage. It’s been six years to this point since Foster was on the big screen in the MCU, and she’ll be worthy when she does return in 2021.
Jane’s transformation into Mighty Thor is something that has only increased interest in Thor: Love and Thunder. Since the movie is still a few years away, though, it will be a while before Marvel Studios starts their official marketing push for it. Thankfully, fan artist BossLogic has designed a great poster in the meantime that puts Jane front and center as she transitions into the Mighty Thor. Check it out below:
Thor’s new look from Avengers: Endgame is in the background on the left while Valkyrie takes up the bottom right corner, but it’s Jane who receives the bulk of the space here. Jane in her Mighty Thor look may be expected by most based on the recent announcement, but her bald look on the right may not be as clear. Jane becoming Mighty Thor is based on a comic series by Jason Aaron where her worthiness is first revealed. Unfortunately, it comes after she is diagnosed with cancer and begins chemotherapy. Jane’s newfound powers put her in a difficult position, as the medicine in her body trying to beat the cancer is removed each time she makes the transformation.
Waititi has confirmed that Jason Aaron’s run is what gave him this idea to cover the transformation of Jane into Thor in the MCU, so it should be expected that an arc similar to the comic is what’s in store for her. Portman has also started to research her role as Mighty Thor by reading Aaron’s comics as well. Beyond Jane becoming Mighty Thor, not much else is known about what the story of Thor: Love and Thunder will be. Waititi has finished the script already ahead of filming, which is set to begin next year. Thankfully, Marvel fans may not have to wait too long before more details on Thor: Love and Thunder are revealed.
