The fight is never over for The Flash, but he’s about to lose one of his greatest power sources in the pages of DC Comics… as The Death of The Speed Force approaches. And yes, it’s going to be as bad as it sounds.
The speedster may be running towards trouble in The CW’s coming Crisis on Infinite Earths, but the comic book version of Barry Allen has been dealing with a world-changing nightmare ever since DC’s Rebirth. Villains have come and gone, and readers have gotten to see The Flash’s own “Year One” origin story. But now that the dust has settled, the stage is set for the final death throes of the Speed Force governing Barry’s powers. And according to the book’s writer, it’s a death Barry will be forced to let happen.
Screen Rant got the chance to speak with current Flash writer Josh Williamson about his upcoming tale of heroes turned evil in Batman/Superman during SDCC 2019. And while on the topic of DC’s greatest heroes being put through the wringer, we couldn’t help but inquire as to the “Death of The Speed Force” arc starting with The Flash #76 this August. A story that, judging by the cover artwork for the next several issues, looks to be as brutal as it seems. Take a look:
After wrapping up the “Year One” storyline, things appeared to be getting back to normal for Barry. But according to Williamson, the explosion of Speed Force equivalents–the Sage Force, Still Force, Strength Force–over the past year are finally going to be felt. Because there isn’t enough energy to go around… or keep The Flash’s iconic energy source intact any longer:
This next arc is going to be about Barry finding out that because of the Forces that were unleashed last year, they’re causing an influence where they’re killing the Speed Force. So Barry is put in a position: Do I save these lives over here? Or do I save the Speed Force? He’s Barry so of course he’s going to go save their lives, but there’s a lot of conflicts in the way of that. Then it’s, ‘How do you save those lives… as you’re losing your powers?’ And here’s the thing: if he lets those people die, he gets to keep his powers. So what do you do?
