The next Captain Britain has been chosen to lead a brand new team bearing the Excalibur name, leading the newly united X-Men into a new kind of battle. One leaving behind Krakoa for the fantastical fields of Avalon, and promising a fusion of mutants, magic, and Morgan le Fay.
As proof that the new X-Men teams and books will be tackling completely different missions, Excalibur #1 drops a select group of mutants (possessing different levels of sorcery) into a disaster completely removed from the rest of Marvel’s world. The Otherworld is in a state of war, and the wicked sorceress Morgan le Fay is looking to kill those responsible for invading her realm in the form of a Krakoan portal. With her sights soon to be set on taking the offense, it will fall to Excalibur–now made up of Captain Britain, Rogue, Gambit, Rictor, Jubilee, and villain turned mutant priest Apocalypse–to hold the line. And to get fans excited, Marvel has released an official trailer.
New readers can enjoy the trailer’s summary of the series and its stars, with input from Marvel Editor in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, Senior Editor Jordan D. White, and writer Tini Howard below:
If that isn’t enough to convince X-Men fans that this more magical and mystical adventure is making the most of Marvel’s fantasy, then we’ll let Howard herself explain the inspiration taken from modern fantasy… and who are we kidding: role-playing games:
We’re taking those amazing things from the original Excalibur, this beautiful fantasy world–the Otherworld, and Avalon, and the Captain Britain Corps, and all of that–and we’re saying, ‘How do the X-Men interact with this from a place of victory instead of loss?’ What sort of magic can they make?… A world in which they have the space and the freedom to develop their culture, to learn magic and art, and to make these things that mutantkind has never seen before. And not only do they get to revel in it, the rest of the world has to deal with it.
I’ve always been someone that likes to roll some dice and play some games, so I would be lying if I said I hadn’t thought of the characters as their role within the party. When we were in the room and we decided we were going to make Betsy Captain Britain, it was like, ‘That’s the Paladin. That’s the leader of our team.’ Apocalypse is the big question mark on the team, right? So when we see the new status quo for mutants, we might understand why Apocaylpse has even bigger plans than anyone else on the island.
